BACKGROUND A common yet untested assumption of cognitive training in children is that training activities should be adaptive, with difficulty adjusted to the individual’s performance, in order to maximize training outcomes. OBJECTIVE This trial aimed to examine children’s outcomes of working memory training using adaptive, self-select and stepwise approaches to setting the difficulty of training activities compared to an active control condition immediately and 6 months post-intervention. While the aim is exploratory, we hypothesized that children allocated to a working memory training condition will show greater improvements: (1) on near transfer measures compared to intermediate and far transfer measures; and (2) immediately post-intervention compared to 6 months post-intervention. METHODS This blinded, active-controlled, parallel-group randomized trial aimed to recruit 128 children aged 7 to 11 years from one primary school. Following baseline testing, children were randomized into one of four conditions: adaptive, self-select or stepwise working memory training, or active control. An experimental intervention embedded in Minecraft was developed for teachers to deliver in the classroom daily over two consecutive weeks (10 x 20-minute sessions). The working memory training comprised two training activities with processing demands similar to daily activities: backward span and following instructions. The control comprised creative activities. Children completed a set of working memory measures (near and intermediate transfer), the Raven’s Standard Progressive Matrices (far transfer) to determine training outcomes, and intrinsic motivation questionnaires to determine expectations of the intervention. Caregivers completed the ADHD Rating Scale-5 to measure their child’s attention (far transfer). RESULTS Data collection concluded in December 2022. Data is currently being processed and analyzed. CONCLUSIONS This trial will determine whether the adaptive approach to setting the difficulty of training activities maximizes cognitive training outcomes for children. This trial has several strengths: adopts best practices for cognitive training studies (design, methods, analysis plan); uses a range of measures to detect discrete levels of transfer; a 6 months post-intervention follow-up assessment; appropriately powered; and uses an experimental working memory training intervention based on current understanding of the cognitive mechanisms of training. Findings will inform future research and design of cognitive training interventions, and highlight the value of evidence-based principles of cognitive training. Background and ObjectivesTo investigate brain regional white matter development in full-term (FT) and very preterm (VP) children at term equivalent and 7 and 13 years of age based on the ratio of T1- and T2-weighted MRI (T1-w/T2-w), including (1) whether longitudinal changes differ between birth groups or sexes, (2) associations with perinatal risk factors in VP children, and (3) relationships with neurodevelopmental outcomes at 13 years.MethodsProspective longitudinal cohort study of VP (born T1-w/T2-w images were parcellated into 48 white matter regions of interest.ResultsOf 224 VP participants and 76 FT participants, 197 VP and 55 FT participants had useable T1-w/T2-w data from at least one timepoint. T1-w/T2-w values increased between term equivalent and 13 years of age, with little evidence that longitudinal changes varied between birth groups or sexes. VP birth, neonatal brain abnormalities, being small for gestational age, and postnatal infection were associated with reduced regional T1-w/T2-w values in childhood and adolescence. Increased T1-w/T2-w values across the white matter at 13 years were associated with better motor and working memory function for all children. Within the FT group only, larger increases in T1-w/T2-w values from term equivalent to 7 years were associated with poorer attention and executive function, and higher T1-w/T2-w values at 7 years were associated with poorer mathematics performance.DiscussionVP birth and multiple known perinatal risk factors are associated with long-term reductions in the T1-w/T2-w ratio in white matter regions in childhood and adolescence, which may relate to alterations in microstructure and myelin content. Increased T1-w/T2-w ratio at 13 years appeared to be associated with better motor and working memory function and there appeared to be developmental differences between VP and FT children in the associations for attention, executive functioning, and mathematics performance.

Atypical motor coordination and cognitive processes, such as response inhibition and working memory, have been extensively researched in individuals with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Oculomotor neural circuits overlap extensively with regions involved in motor planning and cognition, therefore studies of oculomotor function may offer unique insights into motor and cognitive control in ADHD. We performed a series of pairwise meta-analyses based on data from 26 oculomotor studies in ADHD to examine whether there were differences in performance on visually-guided saccade, gap, antisaccade, memory-guided, pursuit eye movements and fixation tasks. These analyses revealed oculomotor disturbances in ADHD, particularly for difficulties relating to saccade inhibition, memorizing visual target locations and initiating antisaccades. There was no evidence for pursuit eye movement disturbances or saccade dysmetria. Investigating oculomotor abnormalities in ADHD may provide insight into top-down cognitive control processes and motor control, and may serve as a promising biomarker in ADHD research and clinical practice.

Attention training can improve children’s attention; however, certain child characteristics may influence differential outcomes. This study explored the influence of age, general cognitive ability, and ADHD symptoms on attention outcomes following attention training. Ninety-eight children (5–9 years) were randomized to participate in attention training, placebo, or usual school activities for 20 min daily during class over 5 weeks. Child cognitive assessments and parent/teacher behavioral questionnaires were completed pre-, post-, and 6 month post-intervention. Linear mixed-effects models indicated that for the attention training condition, younger age was associated with greater improvement in cognitive attention post-intervention and older age with less improvement, while more ADHD symptoms were associated with greater reductions in teacher-rated inattentive/hyperactive behavior post-intervention and fewer ADHD symptoms were associated with fewer improvements in cognitive attention post-intervention. General cognitive ability was not associated with outcomes. Child characteristics may influence attention training outcomes; however, larger studies are needed.

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is one of the most common neurodevelopmental conditions among school-age children. Early intervention and ongoing evaluation of treatment effectiveness are essential to minimize the life-long negative impact of ADHD. Neurocognitive functions have been reported to improve with pharmacological and cognitive training interventions for children with ADHD. We evaluated the value of measuring change in neurocognitive functions following ADHD interventions as a treatment outcome. We systematically reviewed randomized control trials of two distinctive types of ADHD interventions-pharmacological treatments and cognitive training-and summarized the changes in neurocognitive and clinical outcomes using a series of meta-analyses. Both pharmacological and cognitive training interventions showed positive effects on some aspects of neurocognitive functions. However, there were no significant correlations between changes in neurocognitive function (e.g., inhibition) and changes in ADHD behavioral symptoms (e.g., impulsive behavior). Although the associations between changes in neurocognitive function and clinical outcomes are not well studied, based on current findings, it is not suitable to use change in neurocognitive outcomes as a proxy for change in ADHD clinical symptom-based outcomes. There is, however, notable value in monitoring changes in neurocognitive function associated with ADHD interventions to achieve the following aims: (1) understanding full treatment effect on children with ADHD, (2) identifying ancillary indicators of subclinical changes, and (3) provision of objective and less biased measures of treatment effects. These findings are important evidence that changes in neurocognitive function could be a co-occurring objective indication that parallels the clinical effects of ADHD treatments.

Objective: The Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire is a widely used screening tool for emotional and behavioural problems in children. Recent quantitative analyses have raised concerns regarding its structural validity in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. This paper aims to extend upon existing findings by analysing the factor structure of both the parent- and teacher-reported Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire in this population across a broader age range than in previous studies. Methods: Participants were the caregivers and teachers of 1624 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children (820 male, 804 female) aged 2–15 years from Waves 2–11 of the Longitudinal Study of Indigenous Children. The majority of children were Aboriginal living in major cities and inner regional areas. Internal consistency was estimated with McDonald’s Omega. Exploratory structural equation modelling was conducted to investigate the factor structure of the parent-reported and teacher-reported versions of the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire. Results: Responses from teachers demonstrated higher internal consistency than responses from parents, which was unacceptably low across most age groups. The purported five-factor structure of the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire failed to be replicated across both parent- and teacher-reported questionnaires. The results of bifactor and hierarchical exploratory structural equation models also failed to approximate the higher-order summary scales. These results indicate that the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire subscales and summary scores do not provide a valid index of emotional and behavioural problems in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children. Conclusion: The Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire should not be used with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children.

BackgroundThe corpus callosum is the largest white matter pathway in the brain connecting the left and the right hemispheres. Developmental absence of the corpus callosum is a model disease for exploring disrupted connectivity and in turn understanding plasticity of the human brain, with atypically developing structure and function resulting in a highly heterogeneous clinical and cognitive profile. A proposed candidate for neuroplastic response in the context of this brain malformation is strengthening of intra-hemispheric pathways.MethodsTo test this hypothesis, we assessed structural and functional connectivity at the whole-brain and regional level in a uniquely large cohort of children with agenesis of the corpus callosum (AgCC, n = 20) compared with typically developing controls (TDC, n = 29), and then examined associations with neurobehavioural outcomes using a multivariate data-driven approach.ResultsFor structural connectivity, children with AgCC showed a significant increase in intrahemispheric connectivity in addition to a significant decrease in inter-hemispheric connectivity compared with TDC. In contrast, for functional connectivity, children with AgCC and TDC showed a similar pattern of intra-hemispheric and inter-hemispheric connectivity. In AgCC, structural strengthening of the intra-hemispheric pathway was uniquely associated with verbal learning and memory, attention and executive measures.ConclusionsWe observed structural strengthening of intra-hemispheric pathways in children born without corpus callosum, which seems to allow for functional connectivity comparable to a typically developing brain, and were relevant to explain neurobehavioural outcomes in this population. This neuroplasticity might be relevant to other disorders of axonal guidance, and developmental disorders in which corpus callosum alteration is observed.

Cognitive training can improve working memory in children at risk of working memory difficulties; however, response to training can vary and doubt exists if working memory improvements can be sustained long- term. This study aimed to explore whether child motivation and family environment are associated with working memory trajectories in children born extremely preterm or extremely low birth weight. Forty-five 7-year-old children completed Cogmed Working Memory Training® at home over 5–7 weeks. Children and their families completed working memory tests and child motivation and family environment questionnaires at baseline, with working memory further tested 2 weeks, 12 months and 24 months post-training. Latent growth modelling was used to explore whether child motivation and family environment factors were associated with working memory trajectories. Children’s desire for challenge, training competence, and being from a single-parent household were associated with short-term improvements in verbal short-term memory. Children from poorer functioning families were associated with short-term improvements in working memory. There was little evidence that child motivation or family environment was associated with long-term working memory changes. Child motivation and the training environment may be important for understanding training effects in children born extremely preterm or extremely low birth weight, and warrant closer examination in working memory training studies.

To examine factors associated with fathers' early parenting behaviors (including very preterm [VPT] birth, familial social risk, child sex, and child medical risk), and the relationship between fathers' early parenting behaviors and later child development.Participants were 81 VPT (born30 weeks of gestation) and 39 full-term father-child dyads. Parenting behaviors (sensitivity, structuring, nonintrusiveness, nonhostility) were assessed at 12 months of corrected age using the Emotional Availability Scales, with scores ranging from 1 (low) to 7 (high). At 24 months of corrected age, child cognitive, language, motor, and social-emotional development were assessed. Results are presented as (regression coefficients; 95% CIs).There was little evidence that VPT birth, familial social risk, or child medical risk were associated with fathers' parenting behaviors. Fathers of girls tended to be more sensitive (0.42; 0.18, 0.65), less intrusive (0.36; 0.04, 0.70), and less hostile (0.26; 0.01, 0.50) compared with fathers of boys. Higher structuring was associated with more optimal cognitive (3.29; 1.25, 5.34), and language development (4.69; 2.26, 7.14). Higher sensitivity was associated with more optimal language development 3.35 (0.95, 5.75), and more intrusive behavior was associated with more externalizing symptoms (-1.68; -3.06, -0.31).Early parenting did not differ between fathers with VPT and full-term children, but fathers' parenting did vary according to child sex. Fathers' early parenting was associated with future neurodevelopment, reinforcing the need to support fathers' parenting, and include fathers in early intervention programs.

The corpus callosum is the largest white matter pathway connecting homologous structures of the two cerebral hemispheres. Remarkably, children and adults with developmental absence of the corpus callosum (callosal dysgenesis, CD) show typical interhemispheric integration, which is classically impaired in adult split‐brain patients, for whom the corpus callosum is surgically severed. Tovar‐Moll and colleagues (2014) proposed alternative neural pathways involved in the preservation of interhemispheric transfer. In a sample of six adults with CD, they revealed two homotopic bundles crossing the midline via the anterior and posterior commissures and connecting parietal cortices, and the microstructural properties of these aberrant bundles were associated with functional connectivity of these regions. The aberrant bundles were specific to CD and not visualised in healthy brains. We extended this study in a developmental cohort of 20 children with CD and 29 typically developing controls (TDC). The two anomalous white‐matter bundles were visualised using tractography. Associations between structural properties of these bundles and their regional functional connectivity were explored. The proposed atypical bundles were observed in 30% of our CD cohort crossing via the anterior commissure, and in 30% crossing via the posterior commissure (also observed in 6.9% of TDC). However, the structural property measures of these bundles were not associated with parietal functional connectivity, bringing into question their role and implication for interhemispheric functional connectivity in CD. It is possible that very early disruption of embryological callosal development enhances neuroplasticity and facilitates the formation of these proposed alternative neural pathways, but further evidence is needed.

Highlights • Mapping hemispheric structural connectivity of an axonal guidance disorder. • Findings from Owen and colleagues (2013) were replicated in a larger cohort. • AgCC showed increased intra-hemispheric graph metrics. • Regional differences in graph metrics were observed at lobe and node levels in AgCC. • Structural graph metrics are not associated with neurobehavioral outcomes in AgCC., Agenesis of the corpus callosum (AgCC) is a congenital brain malformation characterized by the complete or partial failure to develop the corpus callosum. Despite missing the largest white matter bundle connecting the left and right hemispheres of the brain, studies have shown preserved inter-hemispheric communication in individuals with AgCC. It is likely that plasticity provides mechanisms for the brain to adjust in the context of AgCC, as the malformation disrupts programmed developmental brain processes very early on. A proposed candidate for neuroplastic response in individuals with AgCC is strengthening of intra-hemispheric structural connections. In the present study, we explore this hypothesis using a graph-based approach of the structural connectome, which enables intra- and inter-hemispheric analyses at multiple resolutions and quantification of structural characteristics through graph metrics. Structural graph metrics of 19 children with AgCC (13 with complete, 6 with partial AgCC) were compared to those of 29 typically developing controls (TDC). Associations between structural graph metrics and a wide range of neurobehavioral outcomes were examined using a multivariate data-driven approach (Partial Least Squares Correlation, PLSC). Our results provide new evidence suggesting structural strengthening of intra-hemispheric pathways as a neuroplastic response in the acallosal brain, and highlight regional variability in structural connectivity in children with AgCC compared to TDC. There was little evidence that structural graph properties in children with AgCC were associated with neurobehavioral outcomes. To our knowledge, this is the first report leveraging graph theory tools to explicitly characterize whole-brain intra- and inter-hemispheric structural connectivity in AgCC, opening avenues for future research on neuroplastic responses in AgCC.

Objective Mothers of children born very preterm (VP) are at increased risk of developing postnatal depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress symptoms. However, mental health disorder rates are rarely assessed in this population compared with full-term peers, and it is unclear if postnatal distress symptoms precede higher rates of maternal mental health disorders at 5 years post-birth in both birth groups. Methods Mothers of children born VP (n = 65; mean [SD] age at birth, 33.9 [5.0]; 72.1% tertiary educated) and full-term (n = 90; mean [SD] age at birth, 33.4 [4.0]; 88.2% tertiary educated) completed questionnaires assessing symptoms of depression, anxiety, and trauma within 4 weeks of birth. At 5 years post-birth, they participated in a structured diagnostic interview assessing mood, anxiety, and trauma-related mental health disorders, both current and over the lifetime. Results There was little evidence for differences between mothers in the VP and full-term groups in rates of any mental health disorder at 5 years (VP = 14%, full-term = 14%) or lifetime (VP = 41%, full-term = 37%). In mothers of children born VP, elevated postnatal post-traumatic stress symptoms were associated with higher rates of mental health disorders at 5 years (odds ratio = 21.5, 95% confidence interval = 1.35–342). Conclusions Findings suggest that preterm birth may not lead to increased odds of later developing maternal mental health disorders, despite known risks of elevated postnatal distress following a VP birth. However, those with post-traumatic stress symptoms following a VP birth could be more vulnerable, and assessment and monitoring is recommended.

Visual processing deficits have been widely reported in developmental dyslexia however the locus of cognitive dysfunction remains unclear. Here, we examined the neural correlates of perceptual decision-making using a dot-motion task and electroencephalography (EEG) and investigated whether presenting deficits were unique to children with dyslexia or if they were also evident in other, typically developing children with equally immature reading systems. Sixty-eight children participated: 32 with dyslexia (DD; 16 females); 21 age-matched controls (AM; 11 females) and 15 reading-matched controls (RM; 9 females). All participants completed a bilaterally presented random-dot-motion task while EEG was recorded. Neural signatures of low level sensory processing (steady state visual evoked potentials; SSVEPs), pre-target attentional bias (posterior α power), attentional orienting (N2), evidence accumulation (centro-parietal positive decision signal; CPP) and execution of a motor response (β) were obtained to dissect the temporal sequence of perceptual decision-making. Reading profile provided a score of relative lexical and sublexical skills for each participant. Although all groups performed comparably in terms of task accuracy and false alarm rate, the DD group were slower and demonstrated an earlier peak latency, reduced slope and lower amplitude of the CPP compared with both AM and RM controls. Reading profile was found to moderate the relationship between word reading ability, reaction time as well as CPP indices showing that lexical dyslexics responded more slowly and had a shallower slope, reduced amplitude and earlier latency of CPP waveforms than sublexical dyslexics. These findings suggest that children with dyslexia, particularly those with relatively poorer lexical abilities, have a reduced rate and peak of evidence accumulation as denoted by CPP markers yet remain slow in their overt response. This is in keeping with hypotheses that children with dyslexia have impairment in effectively sampling and processing evidence about visual motion stimuli.

OBJECTIVES: Subgroups of children may benefit more from working memory training than others. In this study, we aimed to examine whether response to the Cogmed Working Memory Training program differed for children with low IQ and elevated attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, emotional and behavioral symptoms, special health care needs, or by sex. METHODS: We used data from the Memory Maestros trial, a population-based randomized controlled trial of the Cogmed program delivered at school (n = 226) compared to usual teaching (n = 226) in grade 1 children (mean age 6.9 years; SD 0.4) with low working memory. Cogmed comprises 20 to 25 sessions of 45-minute duration over 5 to 7 weeks. Children completed subtests from the Automated Working Memory Assessment to measure change in working memory from baseline to 6 months postrandomization. RESULTS: After training, improved working memory standard scores (>1 SD) from baseline to 6 months were observed for approximately one-third of the children, with more than half maintaining stable scores (within 1 SD). However, similar outcomes were observed for children receiving usual teaching. Differential effect of Cogmed versus usual teaching was evident for children with elevated hyperactivity and/or inattention, who were less likely to show improved visuospatial working memory, but not for other subgroups studied. CONCLUSIONS: Children with elevated hyperactivity and/or inattention were less likely to show clinically meaningful improvement after Cogmed; however, differential effects were not evident for children with low IQ and elevated emotional and behavioral symptoms, special health care needs, or by sex. More research is needed to determine if training can improve working memory and, if so, for whom.

OBJECTIVES: Children born very preterm (VPT) are at an increased risk of developing mental health (MH) disorders. Our aim for this study was to assess rates of MH disorders in children born VPT and term at 13 years of age and stability of MH disorders between ages 7 and 13 years by using a diagnostic measure. METHODS: Participants were from the Victorian Infant Brain Study longitudinal cohort and included 125 children born VPT ( RESULTS: Compared with term peers, 13-year-olds born VPT were more likely to meet criteria for any MH disorder (odds ratio 5.9; 95% confidence interval 1.71–20.03). Anxiety was the most common disorder in both groups (VPT = 14%; term = 4%), whereas attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder carried the greatest differential elevated risk (odds ratio 5.6; 95% confidence interval 0.71–43.80). Overall rates of MH disorders remained stable between 7 and 13 years, although at an individual level, many participants shifted in or out of diagnostic categories over time. CONCLUSIONS: Children born VPT show higher rates of MH disorders than their term peers, with changing trajectories over time. Findings highlight the importance of early identification and ongoing assessment to support those with MH disorders in this population.

Pathogenic variants in the gene encoding deleted in colorectal cancer (DCC) are the first genetic cause of isolated agenesis of the corpus callosum (ACC). Here we present the detailed neurological, brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and neuropsychological characteristics of 12 individuals from three families with pathogenic variants in DCC (aged 8-50y), who showed ACC and mirror movements (n=5), mirror movements only (n=2), ACC only (n=3), or neither ACC nor mirror movements (n=2). There was heterogeneity in the neurological and neuroimaging features on brain MRI, and performance across neuropsychological domains ranged from extremely low (impaired) to within normal limits (average). Our findings show that ACC and/or mirror movements are associated with low functioning in select neuropsychological domains and a DCC pathogenic variant alone is not sufficient to explain the disability. WHAT THIS PAPER ADDS: Neuropsychological impairment severity is related to presence of mirror movements and/or agenesis of the corpus callosum. A DCC pathogenic variant in isolation is associated with the best prognosis.

To compare the parenting environment and the relationships between parenting behaviors and concurrent child neurobehavioral outcomes at 2 years of corrected age between children born moderate-to-late preterm (MLP; 32-36 weeks of gestation) and at term (≥37 weeks of gestation).Participants were 129 children born MLP and 110 children born at term and their mothers. Mothers' parenting behaviors (sensitivity, structuring, nonintrusiveness, nonhostility) were assessed at 2 years of corrected age using the Emotional Availability Scales. Child cognitive and language development were assessed using the Bayley Scales of Infant and Toddler Development, and social-emotional competence using the Infant Toddler Social and Emotional Assessment.Mothers of children born MLP and at term displayed similar parenting behaviors overall, with slightly lower nonintrusiveness in mothers of children born MLP (adjusted mean difference -0.32 [-0.60, -0.04]; P = .03). In both groups of children, greater maternal sensitivity was associated with better cognitive development (P .001 MLP; P = .02 term), increased maternal structuring was associated with better social-emotional competence (P = .02 MLP; P = .03 term), and higher maternal nonintrusiveness was associated with better cognitive, language, and social-emotional outcomes (all P .04). Greater maternal sensitivity and structuring were associated with better language development in children born MLP but not in children born at term.Parenting behaviors are important for neurobehavioral outcomes in children born MLP and at term. Language development may be more strongly influenced by select parenting behaviors in children born MLP compared with children born at term.

Developmental absence (agenesis) of the corpus callosum (AgCC) is a congenital brain malformation resulting from disruption of corpus callosum formation, a structure that is crucial for the transfer and integration of information, including attention processes, across the brain. This study aimed to investigate previously proposed candidates for alternative inter-hemispheric pathways in AgCC by examining (1) white matter volume and microstructure of the anterior and posterior commissures in children with AgCC compared to typically developing controls (TDC), and (2) in children with AgCC, examine the associations of white matter volume and microstructure of the anterior and posterior commissures and any remaining corpus callosum with attention processes. Participants were 21 children with AgCC (13 complete, 8 partial) recruited from The Royal Children's Hospital, Melbourne, and 30 TDC aged 8–17 years. T1-and diffusion-weighted MR sequences were used to calculate volume and microstructural parameters. Neuropsychological testing assessed attention processes. We found the anterior commissure was significantly larger in volume in children with AgCC than TDC (p = .027), with reduced mean FA (p = .001) associated with increased mean RD (p < .001). In children with AgCC, we found microstructural properties of the anterior commissure associated with attentional processes, specifically, mean FA of the anterior commissure was associated with better divided attention (p = .03), and the association between alerting attention and mean AD and RD was found to be moderated by age (p = .027, p = .008) and the degree of corpus callosum agenesis (p = .025, p = .016). Furthermore, in partial AgCC, larger posterior commissure volume was associated with better orienting attention (p = .035). In conclusion, we provide evidence that the volume and microstructure of the anterior commissure are altered in children with AgCC, and this neuroplastic response might have an influence on attention processes.

Intrinsic motivation is essential for academic success and cognitive growth, but limited work has examined the neuroanatomical underpinnings of intrinsic motivation from a network perspective, particularly in early childhood. Intrinsic motivation is associated with better academic performance. Working memory abilities may contribute to this association, especially in children at risk for learning and academic difficulties such as those born extremely preterm. This study examined whether verbal and visuo-spatial working memory abilities mediate the relationship between intrinsic motivation for school learning (mastery, challenge and curiosity) and academic performance (word reading, spelling and mathematics) in 7-year old extremely preterm or extremely low birth weight children (n = 91). Structural equation modeling revealed verbal short-term memory to mediate associations between aspects of intrinsic motivation and literacy performance. Positive associations between mastery and verbal short-term memory, reading and spelling, and a positive association between challenge and mathematics performance were also identified. These findings highlight potential pathways linking intrinsic motivation for school learning, working memory, and academic achievement in early school-age children at risk of academic impairments. Examination of individual characteristics such as motivation and cognitive skills is important for understanding factors that shape children's learning and performance.

Background Adaptive working memory training is being implemented without an adequate understanding of developmental trajectories of working memory. We aimed to quantify from Grade 1 to Grade 3 of primary school (1) changes in verbal and visuospatial working memory and (2) whether low verbal and visuospatial working memory in Grade 1 predicts low working memory in Grade 3. Method The study design includes a population-based longitudinal study of 1,802 children (66% uptake from all 2,747 Grade 1 students) at 44 randomly selected primary schools in Melbourne, Australia. Backwards Digit Recall (verbal working memory) and Mister X (visuospatial working memory) screening measures from the Automated Working Memory Assessment (M = 100; SD = 15) were used to assess Grades 1 and 3 (ages 6-7 and 8-9 years) students. Low working memory was defined as ≥1 standard deviation below the standard score mean. Descriptive statistics addressed Aim 1, and predictive parameters addressed Aim 2. Results One thousand seventy (59%) of 1802 Grade 1 participants were reassessed in Grade 3. As expected for typically developing children, group mean standard scores were similar in Grades 1 and 3 for verbal, visuospatial, and overall working memory, but group mean raw scores increased markedly. Compared to "not low" children, those classified as having low working memory in Grade 1 showed much larger increases in both standard and raw scores across verbal, visuospatial, and overall working memory. Sensitivity was very low for Grade 1 low working memory predicting Grade 3 low classifications. Conclusion Although mean changes in working memory standard scores between Grades 1 and 3 were minimal, we found that individual development varied widely, with marked natural resolution by Grade 3 in children who initially had low working memory. This may render brain-training interventions ineffective in the early school year ages, particularly if (as population-based programmes usually mandate) selection occurs within a screening paradigm.

In the human brain, the corpus callosum is the major white-matter commissural tract enabling the transmission of sensory-motor, and higher level cognitive information between homotopic regions of the two cerebral hemispheres. Despite developmental absence (i.e., agenesis) of the corpus callosum (AgCC), functional connectivity is preserved, including interhemispheric connectivity. Subcortical structures have been hypothesised to provide alternative pathways to enable this preservation. To test this hypothesis, we used functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) recordings in children with AgCC and typically developing children, and a time-resolved approach to retrieve temporal characteristics of whole-brain functional networks. We observed an increased engagement of the cerebellum and amygdala/hippocampus networks in children with AgCC compared to typically developing children. There was little evidence that laterality of activation networks was affected in AgCC. Our findings support the hypothesis that subcortical structures play an essential role in the functional reconfiguration of the brain in the absence of a corpus callosum.

Children born very preterm (VP; C and BS > FS, respectively. There were no significant group differences in neuronal activation for FS > C. However, BS > FS revealed that VP children had significantly greater activation in the left middle frontal gyrus, in the left superior parietal gyrus and right cerebellar tonsil, and significantly less activation in the right precentral and postcentral gyrus and left insula compared with controls. Taken together these results suggest that VP children at 13 years of age show an atypical neuronal activation during spatial WM, specifically related to manipulation of spatial information in WM. It is unclear whether these findings reflect delayed maturation and/or recruitment of alternative neuronal networks as a result of neuroplasticity. Objective: This randomized controlled trial evaluated the efficacy of attention training delivered in class on cognitive attention processes, inattention, hyperactivity, working memory, and numeracy in primary school children. Method: Eight classes ( n = 98 children; 5-9 years) were cluster randomized to gamified attention training, a placebo program, or a no-contact control condition. Assessments were conducted at baseline, immediately after the 5-week intervention (posttraining), and 6 months later (follow-up). Results: Posttraining, attention training was associated with reduced inattention and hyperactivity within the classroom compared with controls, and reduced hyperactivity at home compared with the no-contact control. At follow-up, reduced hyperactivity within the classroom compared with the no-contact control persisted. No effects of training on cognitive attention processes, working memory, and numeracy were observed posttraining. Conclusion: Classroom-based attention training has select benefits in reducing inattention and hyperactivity, but may not promote gains in cognitive or academic skills in primary school children.

Objective Mothers of infants born very preterm (VPT) are at high risk of mental health difficulties. However, less is known about the course of fathers’ depressive and anxiety symptoms over time, and the implications this may have for early parenting behaviors. Methods In total, 100 fathers of 125 infants born VPT ( Results For both depressive and anxiety symptoms, two distinct trajectories were identified. For depression, most fathers were assigned to the persistently low symptom trajectory (82%), while the remainder were assigned to the persistently high symptom trajectory (18%). For anxiety, 49% of fathers were assigned to the persistently low symptom trajectory, while 51% were assigned to the trajectory characterized by moderate symptoms over the first postnatal year. There were no significant differences in parenting behaviors between fathers assigned to the different depressive and anxiety symptom trajectories. Conclusions Fathers of infants born VPT are at risk of chronic depressive and anxiety symptoms over the first postnatal year, highlighting the need for screening and ongoing support.

A visual attention span (VAS) deficit has been widely reported in the Developmental Dyslexia (DD) literature, however, consensus regarding what underlies this problem and the nature of its relationship with reading ability remains elusive. Thirty-two children with DD (15 females) were compared with 23 age matched (12 females) and 17 reading matched controls (9 females) on the combined Theory of Visual Attention (CombiTVA) paradigm with traditional letter and novel symbol conditions. The DD group performed more slowly than the age matched controls in terms of processing speed, but similarly to reading matched controls. Moderation analyses revealed that the difference between the DD group and age matched controls was driven by children with equivalent, or relatively poorer, lexical compared with sublexical reading profiles. Results suggest that reduced processing speed indexes reading immaturity, particularly in DD individuals with relative lexical reading deficits, rather than being a unique contributor to reading dysfunction.

OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to describe language functioning at 13 years of age and examine its developmental trajectory from 2 to 13 years of age in children born very preterm (VP) compared with term controls. METHODS: Two hundred and twenty-four children born VP ( RESULTS: Compared with term controls, children born VP had poorer functioning across all components of language (mean group differences ranged from −0.5 SD to −1 SD; all P < .05) at 13 years of age. At each follow-up age, the VP group displayed poorer language functioning than the term controls, with the groups exhibiting similar developmental trajectories (slope difference = −0.01 SD per year; P = .55). CONCLUSIONS: Children born VP continue to display language difficulties compared with term controls at 13 years of age, with no evidence of developmental “catch-up.” Given the functional implications associated with language deficits, early language-based interventions should be considered for children born VP.

ObjectiveTo assess the effectiveness of Cogmed Working Memory Training compared with a placebo program in improving academic functioning 24 months post-training in extremely preterm/extremely low birth weight 7-year-olds.Study designA multicenter double-blind, placebo-controlled randomized controlled trial was conducted across all tertiary neonatal hospitals in the state of Victoria, Australia. Participants were 91 extremely preterm/extremely low birth weight 7-year-old children born in Victoria in 2005. Children were randomly assigned to either the Cogmed or placebo arm and completed the Cogmed or placebo program (20-25 sessions of 35-40 minutes duration) at home over 5-7 weeks. Academic achievement (word reading, spelling, sentence comprehension, and mathematics) was assessed 24 months post-training, as well as at 2 weeks and 12 months post-training, via standardized testing inclusive of working memory, attention, and executive behavior assessments. Data were analyzed using an intention-to-treat approach with mixed-effects modeling.ResultsThere was little evidence of any benefits of Cogmed on academic functioning 24 months post-training, as well as on working memory, attention, or executive behavior at any age up to 24 months post-training compared with the placebo program.ConclusionsWe currently do not recommend administration of Cogmed for early school-aged children born extremely preterm/extremely low birth weight to improve academic functioning.Trial registrationAustralian New Zealand Clinical Trials Registry: ACTRN12612000124831.

Objective To identify distinct language trajectories of children born very preterm and full term from 2 to 13 years of age and examine predictors for the identified trajectories. Study design A cohort of 224 children born very preterm and 77 full term controls recruited at birth were followed up at ages 2, 5, 7, and 13 years. The number of distinct language trajectories was examined using latent growth mixture modeling allowing for linear and quadratic time trends. Potential predictors in the neonatal period (eg, birth group, sex, and medical risk) and at 2 years (ie, social risk and use of allied health services) for the language trajectories were tested using multinomial logistic regression. Results Five distinct language trajectories were identified across childhood: stable normal (32% of study cohort), resilient development showing catch-up (36%), precocious language skills (7%), stable low (17%), and high-risk (5%) development. The very preterm group was 8 times more likely to have a language trajectory that represented poorer language development compared with full term controls (very preterm, 40%; full term, 6%). Greater social risk and use of allied health services were associated with poorer language development. Conclusions Variable language trajectories were observed, with a substantial proportion of children born very preterm exhibiting adverse language development. These findings highlight the need for monitoring language skills in children born very preterm before school entry and across middle childhood.

Objectives:Agenesis of the corpus callosum (AgCC), characterized by developmental absence of the corpus callosum, is one of the most common congenital brain malformations. To date, there are limited data on the neuropsychological consequences of AgCC and factors that modulate different outcomes, especially in children. This study aimed to describe general intellectual, academic, executive, social and behavioral functioning in a cohort of school-aged children presenting for clinical services to a hospital and diagnosed with AgCC. The influences of age, social risk and neurological factors were examined.Methods:Twenty-eight school-aged children (8 to 17 years) diagnosed with AgCC completed tests of general intelligence (IQ) and academic functioning. Executive, social and behavioral functioning in daily life, and social risk, were estimated from parent and teacher rated questionnaires. MRI findings reviewed by a pediatric neurologist confirmed diagnosis and identified brain characteristics. Clinical details including the presence of epilepsy and diagnosed genetic condition were obtained from medical records.Results:In our cohort, ~50% of children experienced general intellectual, academic, executive, social and/or behavioral difficulties and ~20% were functioning at a level comparable to typically developing children. Social risk was important for understanding variability in neuropsychological outcomes. Brain anomalies and complete AgCC were associated with lower mathematics performance and poorer executive functioning.Conclusions: This is the first comprehensive report of general intellectual, academic, executive social and behavioral consequences of AgCC in school-aged children. The findings have important clinical implications, suggesting that support to families and targeted intervention could promote positive neuropsychological functioning in children with AgCC who come to clinical attention. Objectives:Preterm children demonstrate deficits in executive functions including inhibition, working memory, and cognitive flexibility; however, their goal setting abilities (planning, organization, strategic reasoning) remain unclear. This study compared goal setting abilities between very preterm (VP: Methods:Participants included 177 VP and 61 full-term born control children aged 13 years. Goal setting was assessed using several measures of planning, organization, and strategic reasoning. Parents also completed the Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Function. Regression models were performed to compare groups, with secondary analyses adjusting for potential confounders (sex and social risk), and excluding children with major neurosensory impairment and/or IQResults:The VP group demonstrated a clear pattern of impairment and inefficiency across goal setting measures, consistent with parental report, compared with their full-term born peers. Within the VP group, moderate/severe brain abnormalities on neonatal MRI predicted adverse goal setting outcomes at 13.Conclusions:Goal setting difficulties are a significant area of concern in VP children during late childhood. These difficulties are associated with neonatal brain abnormalities, and are likely to have functional consequences academically, socially and vocationally. (JINS, 2018,24, 372–381)

Background Improving children's sleep could lead to significant benefits in several functional domains. Recent research in adults suggests that intensive, adaptive cognitive training may be beneficial in improving sleep, although there is limited understanding whether this approach yields similar results in children. Objective To determine whether a working memory training program improved sleep latency, sleep problems, and sleep duration on school and nonschool nights and whether there was a differential effect of the timing of training during the school day on sleep outcomes. Design/Methods Design: Population-based randomised controlled trial. Setting: Forty-four schools in Melbourne, Australia. Participants: All Grade 1 children (mean age = 6.9 years, SD 0.4) underwent WM screening using two subtests from the Automated Working Memory Assessment. Children with low verbal and/or visuo-spatial WM scores relative to their peers (‘low WM’, ∼25%) were randomised to intervention or control arms. Intervention: 20 to 25 computerised 25-min training sessions were conducted using the CogMed program, over 5–7 weeks at school. Outcomes: Parent-reported child sleep characteristics (time, latency, duration and problem) at 6 months post randomisation. Results A total of 452 (26.0%) of 1723 children screened (64.1% of approached) met trial eligibility criteria, with 226 in each study arm. Of intervention children, 91% completed the minimum 20 days of training. Retention was 90.5% at 6 months. Adjusted regressions showed that intervention children did not have better sleep latency, duration, bedtime consistency or less sleep problems. Conclusion It does not appear that adaptive working memory training during the school day can be used as a novel approach to improve children's sleep attributes up to 6 months post-randomisation, regardless of the time of day training is delivered.

The ability to temporarily maintain relevant information in mind in the presence of interference or distracting information, also called working memory (WM), is critical for higher cognitive functions and cognitive development. In typically developing (TD) children, WM is underpinned by a fronto-parietal network of interacting left and right brain regions. Developmental absence (agenesis) of the corpus callosum (AgCC) is a congenital brain malformation resulting from disruption of corpus callosum formation. This study aims to investigate functional organisation of WM in children and adolescents with AgCC using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). Nine children with AgCC and a comparison group of sixteen TD children aged 8-17 years completed an fMRI WM paradigm designed to enable investigation of different WM processes, i.e., encoding, maintenance and retrieval. We found that AgCC children recruited globally similar brain regions as the TD comparison group during the WM task, despite significant disparity in brain development, i.e., bilateral occipito-frontal activations during verbal encoding, and bilateral fronto-parietal executive control network during retrieval. However, compared to their TD peers, children with AgCC seemed less able to engage lateralised brain systems specialised for particular memory material (i.e. less supramarginal activations for verbal material and less fusiform activations for face processing) and particular memory process (i.e. absence of right-predominant activations during retrieval). Group differences in the pattern of activation might also reflect different cognitive strategies to cope with competition in processing resources with different susceptibility to concurrent tasks (verbal vs visual), such as differential recruitment of associative visual areas and executive prefrontal regions in the AgCC compared with the TD group depending on the concurrent task completed during maintenance. This study provides a first step towards a better understanding of functional brain networks underlying higher cognitive functions in children with AgCC.

International audience; Brain malformations involving the corpus callosum are common in children with developmental disabilities. We identified DCC mutations in four families and five sporadic individuals with isolated agenesis of the corpus callosum (ACC) without intellectual disability. DCC mutations result in variable dominant phenotypes with decreased penetrance, including mirror movements and ACC associated with a favorable developmental prognosis. Possible phenotypic modifiers include the type and location of mutation and the sex of the individual.

The deleted in colorectal cancer (DCC) gene encodes the netrin-1 receptor DCC, a transmembrane protein required for the guidance of commissural axons. Germline DCC mutations disrupt the development of predominantly commissural tracts in the central nervous system (CNS) and cause a spectrum of neurological disorders. Monoallelic, missense and predicted loss-of-function DCC mutations cause congenital mirror movements, isolated agenesis of the corpus callosum, or both. Biallelic, predicted loss-of-function DCC mutations cause developmental split brain syndrome. Although the underlying molecular mechanisms leading to disease remain poorly understood, they are thought to stem from reduced or perturbed Netrin-1 signaling. Here we review the 26 reported DCC mutations associated with abnormal CNS development in humans, including 14 missense and 12 predicted loss-of-function mutations, and discuss their associated clinical characteristics and diagnostic features. We provide an update on the observed genotype-phenotype relationships of congenital mirror movements, isolated agenesis of the corpus callosum and developmental split brain syndrome, and correlate this to our current understanding of the biological function of DCC in the development of the CNS. Children with single-suture craniosynostosis (SSC) are increasingly considered to be at high risk of adverse neurodevelopmental outcomes. This systematic review aimed to synthesise and critically appraise the existing literature on the neurodevelopmental features of SSC, with particular attention to methodological quality. A total of 33 articles based on 27 cohorts met inclusion criteria. In the context of variable methodological design and quality, most neurodevelopmental studies indicated that children with SSC are at increased risk for difficulties in cognitive, language, and motor domains during infancy (both pre- and post-surgery) and childhood. Limited information exists on factors influencing outcome.
