Abstract

In this paper, we propose the design, development, and testing of high-torque and lightweight actuators suitable for lightweight robotic applications. The detailed design of the actuator module is described, and its performance evaluation is also presented. Further, the mathematical modelling of the actuator is discussed. Various performance analysis tests were carried out for the elucidation of the designed actuator, which included primarily position, velocity, and torque analyses. The position accuracy analysis included position repeatability at the maximum payload for calculating the acceptable tolerance. The velocity elucidation included a velocity test for the variable load. The torque analysis of the actuator was completed at different supply currents. These tests and the results indicate that the proposed actuator has high precision in reaching the desired position and provides a stabilized performance with variable loads up to the limit for which it was designed. Based on the torque output and the weight, the proposed actuator could be a good fit for lightweight robotic applications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Snake robots can be used in multiple tasks, like, climbing, surveillance, pipe inspection, welding, and so forth. Current gaits of snake robots do not support rotation on a single horizontal plane in a circular fashion of a pole or tree at a fixed height. This makes snake robot extremely difficult to take the end effector to the desired target position and orientation. In addition, torque requirement of individual actuators or links of snake robot proportionally increases based on the number of links to be lifted while performing any task. In this paper, we propose a new gait called circular gait using the Daisy Sequence Fitting algorithm to solve the problems of circular rotation on a horizontal plane at a certain height with low torque. A sliding mode (SM) controller is implemented to achieve the circular gait's required position dynamically. Simulation results show that using the proposed circular gait, the end effector can be moved to any point on the circumference of the fixed horizontal plane of the pole or tree with a lesser torque. For the 0.5 kg module, circular gait moved the end effector to the target point using only 4.5 N m torque. Abstract

Legged locomotion is essential for navigating challenging terrains where conventional robotic systems encounter difficulties. This study investigates the sensitivity of the reconfigurable Klann legged mechanism (KLM) to variations in the input geometric parameters, such as joint position location, link lengths, and angles between linkages, on the continuous coupler curve, which represents the output trace of the leg movement.The continuous coupler curve's sensitivity is explored using global sensitivity analysis based on Sobol's sensitivity method. Furthermore, a novel reconfigurability strategy is presented for the Klann mechanism, aiming to reduce the number of required actuators and the complexity in control. In simulation, the coupler curves obtained from the reconfigurable KLM are classified as hammering, digging, jam avoidance, and step climbing using machine learning approaches. Experimental validation is presented, discussing an approach to identifying geometric parameters and the resultant coupler curve. Illustrations of the the complete assembly of the reconfigured KLM with the obtained gaits using limited experiments are also highlighted. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
