Abstract Background Treating hearing-impaired children aims not only to improve their hearing but also to enhance language acquisition capability. In our community, the CI usually performed on one side because of financial issues at least for a period of time. Consequently, the brain may neglect the unfitted ear. Contralateral hearing aid is an alternative solution when bilateral CI is unavailable. Our purpose is to evaluate the language outcome in bimodal-fit children who using cochlear implant (CI) and contralateral hearing aid (HA) compared to children using unilateral cochlear implant only. Results In this case-control study, 15 children who are using binaural-bimodal stimulation by unilateral CI and contralateral HA and 15 children using monaural cochlear implant received auditory training and language therapy. All participants have been assigned randomly from the Phoniatrics and Audiology clinics. Filtering of patients was made to get the two groups matched regarding age, sex, family motivation, age of implantation, and age of hearing impairment. Evaluation and language therapy were performed in the Phoniatrics clinic. Language progress in each group was compared over different time-points. Also, it was compared between the two groups in each time-point. Both groups revealed significant language improvement over time with intensive auditory training and language therapy. In addition, the bimodal-fit children showed better language and speech outcomes than the unilateral CI children in receptive semantics, expressive semantics, word class, mean length of utterance, and speech intelligibility. The differences were significant with P-values 0.047, 0.034, 0.03, 0.016, and 0.028, respectively, after 9 months of rehabilitation. Conclusion Bimodal-fit children showed better improvement in language than the unilateral CI group. The contralateral hearing aid may be complementary to the unilateral cochlear implant by covering wider speech frequency range. Also, it prevents auditory deprivation and enables binaural hearing with positive impact on language outcome. more...

Tillage systems comprise physical, chemical, and biological modification processes that influence soil properties. Soil cultivation aims to create favorable conditions for the development and growth of crops, as evident in their yields. Three growing seasons (winter 2019/2020 (wheat), summer 2020 (cowpea), and winter 2020/2021 (wheat)) were studied in field experiments in Sidi Salem, Kafr El-Sheikh, Egypt, to investigate the effects of soil tillage and the application of organic and beneficial microbes on various biological, chemical, and physical properties of soil and its productivity. Three replicates of the experimental treatments were set up in a split-plot design, in which there were four main plots: conventional soil tillage (ST) treatment for all three seasons (ST1); tillage in the first and second seasons (ST2); tillage only in the first season (ST3); and no tillage for all three seasons (ST4). However, the subplots (soil additives) were conditioned as follows: without treatment (control, T1); compost (C, T2); beneficial microorganisms (BM, T3); and combination (C + BM, T4). The biological property results showed that ST4T4 treatment produced high levels of microbial communities (bacteria, fungi, and actinomycetes), as well as high levels of soil enzyme activity (dehydrogenase, urease, and phosphatase), during the three growing seasons. However, the second season produced high numbers and dry weights of cowpea plants’ nodules. Additionally, changes in the chemical and physical properties showed that the application of various soil tillage treatments during the examined seasons led to significant increases in electrical conductivity (ECe, dSm−1), bulk density (BD, kg m−3), and soil infiltration rate (IR, cm h−1), following the trend of ST4 > ST3 > ST2 > ST1. In contrast, the results revealed decreases in the exchangeable sodium percentage (ESP, %), porosity (PO, %), soil aggregates (stable aggregates and optimal-sized aggregates, %), and soil penetration resistance (SPRa, Mpa). The combination treatment (ST4T4) provided the best yields, with grain yields of 4.991 and 5.325 tons ha−1 and straw yields of 5.214 and 5.338 tons ha−1 in the first and third seasons (wheat), respectively. Cowpea plants showed the same pattern in the second season. Therefore, improvements in soil properties and enhancements in biological activity help maintain its productivity and fertility through simplified tillage processes that reduce interference with the soil surface layer. more...

This research aimed to understand how the incorporation of nanocarbon powder (NCP) influences the crashworthiness performance of glass fiber‐reinforced epoxy (GFRE) tubular components, potentially offering insights into improving the safety and resilience of structures or vehicles. Consequently, the crashworthiness behaviors of circular tubes made of GFRE with varying amounts of NCP was studied. Utilizing wet‐wrapping through hand lay‐up technique, GFRE tubes were fabricated with various weight percentages of NCP, that is, 0, 0.25, 0.50, 1, 2, 3, and 4 wt.%. Following that, the crashing load, total absorbed energy against displacement responses, and deformation histories of these tubes under quasi‐static axial loading conditions were calculated and tracked. As part of the crashworthiness analysis, critical indicators were evaluated, including initial peak load (Fip), total absorbed energy (U), mean crash force (Fm), crash force efficiency (CFE), and specific energy absorption (SEA). The findings reveal that the maximum Fip, U, Fm, and SEA were noted at 0.5 wt.% of NCP, with increasing percent's of 30.80, 12.17, 12.16, and 7.50, respectively, compared to the unfilled tube. While, the CFE was recorded by 3 wt.% of NCP with an enhancement of 16.67%. It is worth to note that, the findings reveal that the inclusion of NCP increases crashworthiness metrics up, that is, Fip, U, Fm, and SEA to a concentration of 0.50 wt.% NCP. However, beyond this point, there's a notable decline in performance. Abstract Background Respiratory distress is recognized as any sign of breathing difficulty in infants. Some congenital anomalies present immediately with airway distress, while others are asymptomatic or discovered later in infancy or childhood. Our objectives are to detect different laryngeal causes of respiratory distress in infants and to measure the relative risk of some variables like age, sex, family history, and other congenital anomalies for developing laryngeal causes of respiratory distress. This observational cross-sectional study was carried out during the period from June 2017 to December 2018 at Children’s University Hospital. The study included 80 infants who presented with respiratory distress and admitted to the hospital. All patients subjected to a detailed history from their parents and full general and ENT examinations. X-ray, MSCT neck or direct laryngoscope were carried out in selected cases. Results As regard age, 58% of cases were between 1–6 months, 28% of cases between 6 months and 1 year, and 14% between 1–2 years. Laryngeal causes of respiratory distress among infants were distributed as follow: 70% laryngomalacia, 18% subglottic stenosis, 8% laryngeal web, and 4% of cases were caused by vocal fold paralysis (VFP). The laryngeal causes of respiratory distress did not reveal any statistically significant difference among different age groups or between both genders (P = 0.257, 0.286; respectively). Also, there was no statistically significant difference between infants with positive family history and those without as regard the laryngeal causes of respiratory distress (P = .378). Conclusion The majority of respiratory distress cases (58%) were between 1–6 months. Bivariant analysis of variables age, sex, family history, and other congenital anomalies showed that they were not potent risk factors for developing laryngomalacia, subglottic stenosis, laryngeal web, and vocal fold paralysis. Laryngomalacia represented the commonest cause of respiratory distress (70%) followed by subglottic stenosis (18%), then laryngeal web (8%), and finally the vocal fold paralysis represented the least percentage (4%). Apart from laryngomalacia, the percentages of other causes seem to vary according to sample size and geographic area of study. So, being familiar with the common causes of respiratory distress in a given region is very essential in order not to miss a potentially life-threatening diagnosis. more...

Two field experiments were conducted at Kafr El Sheikh Gov., Egypt, during two winter growing seasons (2020/2021 and 2021/2022). The objective of this study was to improve some chemical and physical properties of soil and the yield and water productivity of faba beans (Viciafaba L.), Cv. Sakha-4 by application of gypsum, compost, and some nanoparticles in salt-affected soils. The experimental treatments were arranged in a split-plot design with three replications. The main plots had the following soil amendments: T1: control treatment, T2: 10 tons compost/hectare, T3: soil gypsum requirement (GR) of 8.59 ton ha−1, and T4: GR + 10 tons compost/hectare. The subplots were treated with foliar application as follows: no treatment, manganese nanoparticles (Mn-NPs), selenium nanoparticles (Se-NPs), and Mn-NPs + Se-NPs. According to the findings, the application of compost + GR significantly decreased soil salinity (EC), exchangeable sodium percentage (ESP), and soil bulk density (BD). However soil porosity, soil penetration resistance (SPRa), and basic soil infiltration (IR) were significantly increased. On the other hand, the results revealed significant positive effects onthe 100-grain weight as well as proline, chlorophyll, superoxide dismutase, and catalase contents due to the interaction between gypsum + compost and Mn-NPs + Se-NPs, which enhanced the productivity of both the seed and straw yields of faba beans compared to the alternative treatments. In addition, the seed yield and irrigation water productivity (PIW, kg m3) of faba beans were significantly increased with addition of gypsum and compost and foliar application of nanoparticles. The highest values of these parameters were achieved due to the interaction between gypsum + compost and Mn-NPs + Se-NPs. It can be concluded that application of GR of 8.59 ton ha−1 and 10 ton ha−1 compost as well as foliar application of Mn-NPs and Se-NPs may be a key strategy for improving some chemical and physical properties of soil and the yield and water productivity of faba beans in salt-affected soil under these experimental conditions. more...

Objective Limited literature has examined the epidemiology of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and fibrosis among young adults in Egypt, a country with one of the highest obesity rates globally. We assessed the prevalence of steatosis and fibrosis among college students in Egypt.Design In this cross-sectional study, we recruited students unaware of having fatty liver via a call-for-participation at a private university in the Dakahlia governorate of Egypt. Primary outcomes were the prevalence of steatosis as determined by the controlled attenuation parameter component of transient elastography and fibrosis as determined by the liver stiffness measurement component of transient elastography. Secondary outcomes were clinical parameters and socioeconomic factors associated with the presence and severity of steatosis and fibrosis.Results Of 132 participants evaluated for the study, 120 (91%) were included (median (IQR) age, 20 (19–21) years; 65 (54.2%) female). A total of 38 participants (31.6%) had steatosis, among whom 22 (57.9%) had S3 (severe) steatosis. Thermoplastic polycarbonate provides minimal structural weight and ductility and is a recyclable material. However, investigation of the characteristics of hybrid composites reinforced with woven glass and polycarbonate sheets is limited. This current study investigated the effect of integration of polycarbonate sheets on glass fiber‐epoxy hybrid composite performance. Non hybrid laminate was fabricated from eight layers of woven glass fiber impregnated with epoxy resin (NG). However, the hybrid samples utilized various symmetric stacking patterns which were made by alternating two processed polycarbonate (PC) sheets with six layers of woven glass fiber embedded with epoxy matrix. The manufacturing was made using the hand layup procedure. Mechanical testing includes compressive, tensile, bearing, and hardness was performed on hybrid and non‐hybrid composites. The results showed that employing PC sheets instead of fibers affect the laminate's strength, ductility, bearing capacity, and hardness. Utilization of PC sheets reduces both compressive and tensile strength. However, an enhancement in tensile, compressive, and bearing failure strain was achieved by 2.5%, 31.25% and 31.7%, respectively with hybrid composite having PC in the skin layers as compared with NG. The extent of failure damage is correlated with the position of the PC sheets in the tested samples. In order to enhance soil qualities and boost crop output, gypsum, plant-growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR), and chitosan are all viable solutions. This study’s goal was to find out how different amounts of chitosan—0, 25, 50, 75, and 100 mg L−1—in combination with gypsum and PGPR inoculation (Azospirillum lipoferum + Bacillus subtilis), affected the yield of maize plants growing in saline–sodic soil. Field tests were carried out in triplicate across two growing seasons, 2020 and 2021, using a split plot design. According to the findings, applying the gypsum + PGPR + 50 mg L−1 chitosan treatment (T8) considerably improved plant physiology (chlorophyll, carotenoids, and proline levels), nutrient indicators (N, K+ and K+/Na+ ratio), soil enzyme activity (dehydrogenase, urease, amylase, and invertase), cation exchange capacity (CEC), and porosity. On the other hand, we revealed positive effects on Na+, bulk density (BD), electrical conductivity (EC), and the proportion of exchangeable sodium (ESP), thus, enhancing the productivity compared to the alternative treatment. Therefore, it might be inferred that using gypsum, microbial inoculation, and 50 mg L−1 chitosan may be a key strategy for reducing the detrimental effects of salinity on maize plants. more...

Soil salinity and climate change have a negative impact on global food production and security, especially in arid regions with limited water resources. Despite the importance of planting methods, irrigation, and soil amendments in improving crop yield, their combined impact on saline soil properties and cereal crop yield is unknown. Therefore, the current study investigated the combined effect of soil amendments (i.e., compost, C and zeolite, Z) and planting methods such as raised bed (M1) and conventional (M2), and different fractions of leaching requirements from irrigation water, such as 5% (L1) and 10% (L2), on the soil physio-chemical properties and wheat and maize productivity in an arid region. The combined application of C + Z, L2, and M1 decreased soil salinity (EC) and sodicity (ESP) after wheat production by 37.4 and 28.0%, respectively, and significantly decreased by these factors by 41.0 and 43.0% after a maize growing season. Accordingly, wheat and maize yield increased by 16.0% and 35.0%, respectively under such a combination of treatments, when compared to crops grown on unamended soil, irrigated with lower leaching fraction and planted using conventional methods. This demonstrates the significance of using a combination of organic and inorganic amendments, appropriate leaching requirements and the raised bed planting method as an environmentally friendly approach to reclaiming saline soils and improving cereal crop production, which is required for global food security. more...

Steel is considered the most widely used metal because of its excellent strength and comparatively low‐production cost. Preventing steel corrosion will be a top priority in industry. This work investigates the influence of an epoxy resin liner to steel filled with different percentages (1, 2, and 3 wt%) of either micro or nanoparticles of alumina (Al2O3) on both bending properties and corrosion resistance. To test for barrier resistance, the coated steel samples were submerged in a citric acid and saline solution. In comparison with pure epoxy coatings, the addition of nano and micro alumina (Al2O3) particles enhanced the corrosion resistance, bending strength, and bending strain under dry and wet conditions. Furthermore, under both dry and wet circumstances, the bending strain rose dramatically with the addition of micro and nano fillers. The 1 wt% of Al2O3 nanoparticles coated steel exhibited the maximum bending strength of 492.81 and 436.9 MPa under wet and dry conditions, respectively. Moreover, the micro filled steel of 1 wt% Al2O3 micro fillers exhibited a 483.7 and 319.08 MPa bending strength under wet and dry circumstances, respectively. Stepwise graded micro/nanocomposite coatings showed good bending and corrosion properties in both dry and wet conditions. The current study was carried out to evaluate the biochemical effects of 4th and 6th instar larvae of S. littoralis provided with treated castor bean leaves for three different insect growth regulators (IGRs) (Novaluron, Pyriproxyfen, and Cyromazine). To determine the effect of these IGRs on total protein, total carbohydrate, total lipids, the activity of chitinase, the activity of acetylcholinesterase and carbohydrates hydrolyzing enzymes (Amylase, invertase, and trehalase activities) at LC50 concentrations of this treatment. The results showed that total proteins, lipids, and carbohydrate content were significantly decreased with all tested IGRs, except for an increase in total carbohydrates with Novaluron and Cyromazine for the 6th instar larvae of S. littoralis. Cyromazine induced a significant decrease in chitinase activity, followed by Pyriproxyfen then Novaluron. The tested IGRs significantly increased the acetylcholinesterase activity. A significant decrease in the activity of amylase and Invertase activity was induced by the tested IGRs, except with Novaluron for 6th instar larvae in the case of amylase and increased with all treatments for 6th instar larvae of Invertase, in contrast, all tested IGRs led to an increase in the activity of Trehalasec except Cyromazine decreased the enzyme activity.
