Year by year, the importance of plastic nanostructures in photonics is increasing. Indeed, polymers represent an interesting alternative to more traditional metal oxides, being easily processable and allowing for light, free-standing and flexible structures. In the field of energy efficiency and sustainability, we bring in two positive examples of the use of plastic photonic crystals: sensing and thermal shielding. In sensing they allow for easy detection of analytes, such as the byproducts of food degradation; a colour change identifies the spoilage, with possible application of these plastic sensors in smart packaging applications. On the other hand, they can be of interest for thermal shielding applications. Indeed, they can be engineered as thin, transparent films able to reduce indoor heating by sunlight and in turn the energy consumption related to the use of air conditioning.

Year by year, thermal shielding has seen an increase in importance for reduction of energetic consumption in vehicles and buildings as a passive method of cooling opposed to traditional antiecologic air conditioning. In this work, we report on the design and fabrication of flexible, multilayer polymer photonic crystals films, namely aegises. Exploiting their peculiar optical properties, aegises are designed to act as selective reflectors for the near-infrared radiation, principal cause of radiative heating by sunlight, while keeping a relative transparency in the visible range. Different polymers are used as alternating building blocks, and the efficiency of the fabricated structures is assessed via thermal experiments, achieving efficiencies greater than 25% in heating reduction.

The possibility to evaluate the molecular diffusivity in polymer thin films used for packaging and device encapsulation directly in-situ would represent a paradigm changer in the assesment of barrier properties and of air quality. Indeed, employing the packaging itself as a smart sensor could lead to waste reduction and mitigate food poisoning effects. In this work, we demonstrate a new technique that exploits simple UV-Vis reflectance spectroscopy to identify the kinetic of diffusion of small molecules in the vapor phase through polymer thin films and polymer multilayered structures. The new method allows then to assess the presence of the analyte in air and its diffusion coefficient in agreement with gravimetric data reported in literature.

Multilayered photonic sensors that rely on polymer‐solvent Flory–Huggins interactions are drawing increasing interest owing to their broad‐band selectivity, even among mixtures, without the need for chemical targeting. Moreover, these sensors provide simple colorimetric responses, and easy, quick fabrication both on laboratory and industrial scales. However, complex optical responses and slow response times are limiting their development. In this work, the behavior of different photonic sensor architectures is analyzed to speed up response time and define a strategy to simplify their spectral behavior. To this end, the effect of interfaces, materials order, and thickness on the diffusion kinetics of a single reference analyte in the multilayered sensors is studied to design the optimal structure. The increasing prevalence and detrimental effects of volatile organic compounds are driving the need for selective on-site sensors that do not require complex sampling or instrumentation. Broadband selective sensors exhibiting selectivity based on their distinct response mechanism is becoming of increasing technological relevance in both industrial and urban settings. In this context, we propose a label-free sensor based on a polymeric planar microcavity embedded with a fluorescent organic dye, designed to detect various pollutants in the vapor phase. The sensor consists of alternating layers of cellulose acetate and poly( N -vinylcarbazole) and contains a polystyrene defect layer doped with a quadrupolar diketopyrrolopyrrole. Both the structural properties of the polymer microcavity and the dye in the defect layer contribute to the sensor's response to analytes, creating a dual-probe system where a single photonic element translates chemical signals into optical signals, namely, transmission and fluorescence spectral variations. The discrimination capability of the photonic structure arises from the physicochemical interactions between the analytes and the polymer components.
