Abstract

The Cementitious Barriers Partnership (CBP) is focused on reducing uncertainties in current methodologies for assessing cementitious barrier performance and increasing the consistency and transparency in the assessment process. One important set of US Department of Energy challenges is assessing the integrity and closure of the high-level waste (HLW) tanks that currently store millions of gallons of highly radioactive wastes. Many of these tanks are decades past their design lives, have leaked or been overfilled, and must be emptied and closed to satisfy regulatory agreements. Carbonation-induced corrosion has been identified as a primary degradation and possible failure mechanism for the HLW tanks prior to closure. After closure the impact of carbonation (and concurrent oxidation) may be to increase the release and short-range transport of contaminants of concern. HLW tanks may be significantly empty for many years (and possibly decades) prior to closure; the performance of the closed tank over centuries, if not millennia, must be assessed to evaluate the potential release of residual radionuclides to the environment. CBP is developing models to evaluate a representative HLW tank closure scenario including the potential impacts of carbonation on waste tanks prior to and post closure. CBP modeling tools, including LeachXS™/ORCHESTRA, are being used to simulate waste tank carbonation, major constituent leaching, and contaminant releases to evaluate the source term and near-field conditions. Simulations presented here include sensitivity analysis for uncracked concrete to varying input parameters including composition, effective diffusivities, and thermodynamic parameters. Abstract

Cementitious materials containing ground granulated iron blast furnace slag and coal combustion fly ash as admixtures are being used extensively for nuclear waste containment applications. Whereas the solid phases of ordinary Portland cement (OPC) have been studied in great detail, the chemistry of cement, fly ash and slag blends has received relatively less study. Given that OPC is generally more reactive than slag and fly ash, the mineralogy of OPC provides a logical starting point for describing the major constituent chemistry of blended cement mortars. To this end, a blended cement mortar containing Portland cement, granulated blast furnace slag, fly ash and quartz sand was modeled using a set of solid phases known to form in hydrated OPC with the geochemical speciation solver LeachXS/ORCHESTRA. Comparison of modeling results to the experimentally determined pH-dependent batch leaching concentrations (USEPA Method 1313) indicates that major constituent concentrations are described reasonably well with the Portland cement mineral set; however, modeled and measured aluminum concentrations differ greatly. Scanning electron microscopic analysis of the mortar reveals the presence of Al-rich phyllosilicate minerals heretofore unreported in similar cementitious blends: kaolinite and potassic phyllosilicates similar in composition to illite and muscovite. Whereas the potassic phyllosilicates are present in the quartz sand aggregate, the formation of kaolinite appears to be authigenic. The inclusion of kaolinite in speciation modeling provides a substantially improved description of the release of Al and therefore, suggests that the behavior of phyllosilicate phases may be important for predicting long-term physico-chemical behavior of such systems. Abstract

The article focuses on the modelling of chromium behaviour and transport at sites contaminated with chromite ore processing residue. The presence of approximately 2.5 million tonnes of chromite ore processing residue on several sites in the vicinity of Glasgow has led to concern about the leaching of the known toxin, Cr(VI), into surface and ground waters and ultimately, into the River Clyde. Examination of the modelled mineralogical composition as a function of pH shows that the hydrogarnet dissolves first followed by the hydrocalumite in the pH range 11.5-10.5.

Abstract

The chemical speciation model BIOCHEM was extended with ecotoxicological transfer functions for uptake of metals (As, Cd, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn) by plants and soil invertebrates. It was coupled to the object-oriented framework ORCHESTRA to achieve a flexible and dynamic decision support system (DSS) to analyse natural or anthropogenic changes that occur in river systems. The DSS uses the chemical characteristics of soils and sediments as input, and calculates speciation and subsequent uptake by biota at various scenarios. Biotic transfer functions were field-validated, and actual hydrological conditions were derived from long-term monitoring data. The DSS was tested for several scenarios that occur in the Meuse catchment areas, such as flooding and sedimentation of riverine sediments on flood plains. Risks are expressed in terms of changes in chemical mobility, and uptake by flood plain key species (flora and fauna).

Abstract

Chromite ore processing residue (COPR) waste from a former chromium chemical works (1830-1968) is still contaminating groundwater in Glasgow, Scotland, with carcinogenic hexavalent chromium, Cr(VI). An integrated analytical, experimental and modelling approach has identified and accounted for mineral phases and processes responsible for the retention and release of Cr(VI) under prevailing field conditions. Both the nature of mineral phase retention and the buffered high pH of the sites, however, militate against direct remediative treatment of the source material, for example by the application of generic methods (e.g. FeSO4) that have been successfully employed elsewhere for the reduction of Cr(VI) to Cr(III) in other matrices. The interception and treatment of groundwater to remove Cr(VI) and the capping of sites to reduce human exposure to airborne Cr(VI)-contaminated dust may well be more realistic and effective, at least in the short to medium term.
