With an increased emphasis on greener air transports and sustainable aviation, the modeling of laminar-to-turbulent boundary layer transition is anticipated to have an added significance, particularly in the applications related to laminar flow technology. However, unmanned aerial vehicles, crewed reentry vehicles, and ground-to-flight extrapolation all benefit from transition models. Because no single transition model is ideal for the complete spectrum of applications, it is useful to incorporate a variety of models in general-purpose CFD solvers, such as the NASA OVERFLOW Overset CFD code. While the Langtry-Menter 𝛄 − 𝑹𝒆𝛉𝒕 model, currently available in OVERFLOW, has been widely used for CFD predictions of flows with laminar, transitional, and turbulent boundary layers, it does not possess the Galilean invariance property, a desirable attribute for rotorcraft applications. To help overcome that limitation, we have recently implemented Menter's baseline version of the SST-based γ transition model, along with a Galilean invariant stationary crossflow extension within OVERFLOW (version 2.3e). An initial assessment of the newly implemented model has been carried out using 2D benchmark cases including flat plates and the NLF-0416 airfoil, addressing several transition scenarios ranging from bypass transition due to freestream turbulence, natural transition via Tollmien-Schlichting instabilities, and transition due to a laminar separation bubble. The crossflow extension has been applied to the infinite swept NLF(2)-0415 wing and the 6:1 prolate spheroid. Wherever possible, the results were obtained on a sequence of meshes to ascertain the grid convergence behavior, which has been evaluated through global metrics such as force coefficients as well as local values of the skin-friction coefficient at selected points near and within the transition region. Overall, the model appears to be correctly implemented and the results show promise for further development using the framework of the γ transition model.

The existing measurements of laminar-to-turbulent transition over circular cones in conventional (i.e., “noisy”) hypersonic wind tunnels have established that the transition location moves downstream when the nose radius is increased from zero. However, this initially downstream movement slows down and ultimately reverses beyond a critical value of the nose radius, and may be related to external forcing in the form of freestream disturbances and/or surface roughness. To understand the effects of freestream acoustic disturbances on transition reversal over a blunt body, hypersonic boundary-layer receptivity to broadband freestream acoustic disturbances from the nozzle wall of a digital conventional wind tunnel is investigated by both direct numerical simulations (DNS) and modal and nonmodal stability analysis. A Mach 8 flow over a 7 deg half-angle cone with a nose radius of 𝑅𝑛 = 5.2mm and freestream Reynolds number of 12.2 × 106m-1 is considered. The results show that the broadband tunnel noise in the free stream of a convectional hypersonic wind tunnel (i.e., outside of the nozzle-wall turbulent boundary layer) can be well represented by an acoustic model with an ansatz of slow acoustic waves. With successful calibration of the model parameters against the precursor tunnel DNS, such an acoustic ansatz can successfully reproduce both the frequency-wavenumber spectra and the temporal evolution of the broadband tunnel noise radiated from the nozzle wall. Additionally, the DNS of the Mach 8 blunt cone with tunnel-like acoustic input above the bow shock showed that the spectra of wall-pressure and heat-transfer fluctuations recovers the signature of the axisymmetric waves predicted by the nonmodal analysis. Furthermore, the azimuthal wavenumber and frequency spectrum of the temperature fluctuations as a function of the wall-normal distance show higher amplitudes for three-dimensional waves above the boundary-layer edge. The numerical schlieren contours show the inclined structures commonly observed in blunt cone experiments, demonstrating that they correspond to three-dimensional structures due to freestream disturbances in the presence of an entropy layer.

Modal and nonmodal instability characteristics of cylindrically blunted flat plates with varying leading edge radii are described for Mach 4 and Mach 6 freestream conditions. The selection of leading edge radii and freestream parameters is informed by experimental conditions. The investigation of this 2D problem provides a slow entropy layer swallowing which allows for an isolated development of perturbations seeded upstream within different wall-normal regions of the flow. At both Mach numbers, a decrease in modal instability amplification was seen as the leading edge radius was increased. Nonmodal analysis reveals amplifying perturbations in the boundary layer as well as in the entropy layer. The medium bluntness regime exhibits the strongest amplification of nonmodal disturbances that is nonmonotonic in character. Small amplitude boundary forcing at the plate surface or volumetric forcing at various wall-normal heights was used to account for receptivity effects. While wall forcing effectively induced modal instabilities, only an actuation above the boundary layer captured disturbances that amplify within the entropy layer. The optimal nonmodal theory’s entropy-layer disturbance evolution exhibited outstanding agreement with controlled forcing, including receptivity effects. The evolution of entropy-layer disturbances from the optimal nonmodal theory showed excellent agreement with the results of receptivity to controlled forcing. Therefore, the nonmodal optimal growth analysis may provide a useful as well as efficient technique to identify the complete disturbance spectrum in blunt hypersonic configurations, where both modal and nonmodal disturbances can amplify in the boundary-layer and entropy-layer regions.

Numerical computations are performed to investigate the potential for transition control in an axisymmetric boundary layer via fully realizable, streamwise stationary streaks induced by an azimuthally periodic array of surface mounted vortex generators (VGs). Previous work has shown that suitable streaks of this type can significantly reduce the growth of Mack’s second mode instabilities, but large streak amplitudes can make the flow susceptible to previously absent streak instabilities that can become the leading cause of transition. Here, we use the adjoint capabilities of the SU2 flow solver to optimize the VG shape to maximize the reduction in the growth of second-mode disturbances while also preventing the streak amplitudes from reaching large enough values to precipitate an earlier onset of transition via streak instabilities. The geometry and the freestream flow conditions are selected to match a relevant trajectory lo-cation from the HIFiRE-1 flight experiment. Results show that the optimized VGs can increase the mean streak amplitude by 117% with respect to a manually developed baseline design. The stability of this optimized basic state is analyzed via the plane-marching parabolized stability equations, predicting a fully laminar flow over the entire cone, or equivalently, yielding transition delay of 130% versus the 17% for the baseline VGs.

This computational study investigates the effects of discrete roughness elements on a blunt cone at zero degrees angle of attack in a Mach 6 flow. Motivation was provided by experiments conducted in the Air Force Research Laboratory Mach 6 High Reynolds Number facility on a 7-degree half-angle cone with a roughness array located at 45 degrees from the apex on two nose tips of different blutness but equivalent roughness Reynolds number. Transition was only affected on the blunter cone, indicating that the transition onset is associated with the combined effects of bluntness and roughness. The present study investigates the 15.24 mm nose radius, 420 azimuthal wavenumber case via Navier-Stokes computations of the laminar base flow and instability analysis. Plane-marching parabolized stability equations (PSE) and inflow-resolvent analysis based on the three-dimensional, harmonic linearized Navier-Stokes equations (HLNSE) are used to calculate the amplification of disturbances along the roughness wake as well as over the roughness nearfield. Results show that the roughness shape can have a great impact on the characteristics of the most amplified wake instabilities. For the experimental configuration with cubic roughness elements of 15 μm height, the flow is marginally unstable. For prismatic elements of 20 μm height, the PSE predicts a logarithmic disturbance amplification ratio of N = 5.6 along its wake, but this ratio increases to N = 9.6 when the amplification over the roughness and separation regions is included in the inflow-resolvent analysis.

Computational investigations of an ogive-cylinder geometry with varying nosetips at zero degrees angle of attack are presented. The model geometry and conditions are selected to match experiments conducted in the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) Mach 6 Ludwieg Tube. Five nosetips of interest were selected for the computational studies herein: two sharp ogives, two blunt ogives, and one hemispherical nosetip. Computations are performed at a freestream Reynolds number of 7.01 × 106 m-1. Each sharp and blunt tip ogives had a 14 and 28 degree version for the tip angles. A cylindrical section follows the nosetip, resulting in a meter long model such as in the experiments. The laminar flow solutions are analyzed. The boundary-layer-edge properties and the velocity and temperature profiles are compared across streamwise locations aft of the ogive-cylinder junction. The blunt nosetips induce an entropy layer that envelopes the boundary-layer profiles. Modal stability analysis identifies most amplified frequencies corresponding to Mack’s second modes that agree with experimental results for the sharp tips. Similar to the experimental measurements based on wall-mounted pressure sensors, no unstable modes are found for the blunt models. Nonmodal analysis revealed a broadband set of disturbances present for the blunter tips, in agreement with experimental observations. Flow perturbation contours of most amplified planar and oblique disturbances are shown to qualitatively match wind tunnel Schlieren images, with a switch from rope-like to elongated structures, i.e., from high frequency Mack’s second modes to low frequency Mack’s first modes, as the nosetip angle is increased for the sharp tip, and from boundary-layer to entropy-layer disturbances as the bluntness is increased.

We develop an iterative automated method to predict transition locations in boundary-layer flows by using the FUN3D solver to perform flow simulations and the LASTRAC code for linear stability computations. The coupling of FUN3D and LASTRAC allows for a robust physics-based approach to model boundary-layer transition by analyzing the growth of different instability waves and then using that information to iteratively update the resulting transition location. There is no user involvement during the iterative computations. We apply this automated method to subsonic flow over a flat plate with a sharp leading edge. The final solution has regions of laminar and turbulent flow with a transition onset location that agrees with experiments and stability-based correlations. This iterative automated method is also applied to an NLF(1)-0416 airfoil for conditions with and without a separation bubble. Along with predicting transition locations, we compare the streamwise distributions of surface-pressure and skin-friction coefficients to a transport-equation-based model. We consider a 6:1 prolate spheroid at three angles of attack, namely, five, ten, and fifteen degrees, where mixed-mode transition occurs due to both Tollmien-Schlichting and crossflow instabilities. The skin-friction contours and transition fronts at every angle of attack from our iterative automated method show good agreement with past experimental and computational results in the literature for the 6:1 prolate spheroid.

Computations are performed to investigate the boundary-layer instabilities over a sharp cone-cylinder-flare model at zero degrees angle of attack. The model geometry and the flow conditions are selected to match the experiments conducted in the Boeing/AFOSR Mach 6 Quiet Tunnel (BAM6QT) at Purdue University. The geometry consists of a nominally sharp 5-degree half-angle cone, followed by a cylindrical segment and then a 10-degree flare. An axisymmetric separation bubble is generated as a result of the laminar shock/boundary-layer interaction in the cylinder-flare region. The comparison of the laminar flow solution and the schlieren images shows a remarkable agreement between the respective locations of both the boundarylayer edge and the reattachment shock. The predicted heat flux distribution is also in agreement with the measured values downstream of the reattachment location. The analysis of convective and global instabilities is performed for flare half angles equal to 8, 10, and 12 degrees and nosetip radii equal to 0.1, 1, and 5 mm. The linear amplification of first and second Mack mode instabilities that begin to amplify in the cone region are computed with a combination of the parabolized stability equations (PSE) and the harmonic linearized Navier-Stokes equations (HLNSE). The predicted frequency spectra of the surface pressure fluctuations associated with both planar and oblique instability waves are compared with the measured spectra at the various locations of the PCB and Kulite sensors. The comparison shows that the computational analysis captures the distinct lobes within the disturbance amplification spectra measured in the experiments, but some differences in amplification characteristics are noted at low frequencies. Overall, the oblique disturbances are found to be more amplified than the planar disturbances. To our knowledge, this represents the first successful comparison between convective instability analysis and measured surface pressure fluctuations for a hypersonic configuration with a separation bubble. Finally, the global instability analysis shows that the laminar flow becomes supercritical for flare half angles larger than 8 degrees. The unstable global mode for the experimental configuration of a 10 degrees flare and a sharp nosetip cone corresponds to a stationary three-dimensional disturbance that is concentrated in the recirculation region and achieves its maximum growth rate for an azimuthal wavenumber of 5.

We model transition to turbulence in a two-dimensional boundary layer downstream of a backward-facing step (BFS) along a flat plate. With the goal of evaluating the available engineering models for predicting the effects of step excrescences on the transition characteristics, two separate methodologies are used to monitor the streamwise shift in the transition onset location as the step height and the flow speed are varied across the range of a previously reported experiment involving step-height-to-local-displacement-thickness ratios of 0 < h/δ* < 1.6. Unlike the variable N-factor method from the previous literature, both of these methods are general in scope and do not involve any empirical correlations that are specific to step excrescences. The first of these techniques involves an N-factor method that directly accounts for the change in boundary-layer instability characteristics due to the step. Stability computations using the harmonic linearized Navier-Stokes equations (HLNSE), which fully account for the nonparallel-mean-flow effects close to the BFS, indicate that the measured transition locations at nearly all test conditions (h/δ* < 1.3) correlate well with a computed N-factor of Ntr = 7.6, demonstrating a successful stability-based transition criterion related to step excrescences. Linear stability theory, which does not account for nonparallel effects, demonstrates reasonable agreement with the HLNSE results, yielding good predictions for the overall trends, but predicts a somewhat earlier onset of transition than HLNSE. The other methodology used in this work involves transport-equation-based transition models. We first show that the Langtry-Menter y - Reθt transition model cannot accurately predict the location of transition onset for moderate BFS heights because it is unable to accurately account for the flow history effects. Along with the Langtry-Menter transition model, we also show the amplification factor transport model does not produce accurate transition locations for subsonic flow over steps even though it accounts for some flow history effects.

Experimental studies of cones at several high-speed facilities have demonstrated that, for small nosetip bluntness, transition onset over a circular cone moves upstream along the leeward side and downstream along the windward side, but this trend may be reversed at large bluntness values, where transition onset moves downstream along the leeward side and upstream along the windward side. A theoretical and numerical investigation is performed to characterize the effects of nose bluntness on disturbance amplification over the circular cone for several angles of attack, with the goal of understanding the potential physical mechanisms behind the experimental observations. The three-dimensional laminar basic states over a 1.5 m long, 7-degree half-angle cone with 9.525 mm nosetip radius are computed for selected angles of attack values and freestream conditions that are selected to match the Mach 10 experiments conducted within the Hypervelocity Wind Tunnel 9 at the Arnold Engineering Development Complex (AEDC). The solutions at a freestream unit Reynolds number of 17.1 million per meter are used to perform detailed instability analyses for angles of attack equal to 0, 1, 3, and 5 degrees. Results indicate that the linear amplification of stationary crossflow waves along inflection lines may begin to influence transition along the acreage of the cone for angles of attack equal to or larger than 5 degrees. The measured trend in transition front with respect to increasing angle of attack is found to be consistent with the predicted increase in the amplification factors for Mack mode disturbances along the streamline trajectories. The increase in Mack mode amplification along the windward ray for higher angles of attack is shown to be the result of a progressively earlier entropy-layer swallowing. Computations also indicate that the transition amplification factor along the windward ray is not constant and increases with the angle of attack and that the transition #-factors along the leeward ray are rather small. The nonmodal analysis for zero degrees angle of attack shows that entropy-layer disturbances with appreciably strong energy growth can coexist with Mack mode instabilities at the measured transition location.

An experimental campaign was conducted on a 7-degree half-angle cone in the NASA Langley Research Center 20-Inch Mach 6 Wind Tunnel to examine the influence of arrays of regularly spaced roughness elements on instability growth and transition. The primary element shape was a pair of elliptical planform ramps that were inclined at equal and opposite angles with respect to the local streamwise direction. The element shapes were designed to induce transient growth disturbances that would lead to sustained azimuthal modulation of the boundary layer flow while limiting the nearfield disturbances to avoid an immediate, i.e., effective tripping of the boundary layer. The bulk of the run matrix consisted of testing different element height sat free stream unit Reynolds numbers ranging from 9.8 to 13.1 million per meter. Other element shapes previously designed for tripping hypersonic boundary layers were also implemented. The model was instrumented with surface mounted Kulite® and PCB® pressure transducers and thermocouples. Spectra from the PCBs® indicated clear suppression of the second-mode instability; however, neither the PCB® spectra nor the heat transfer data presented strong evidence for delayed turbulent flow. Complementary stability computations likewise demonstrated second-mode reduction, particularly just downstream of the roughness, but also revealed a rise in first mode (streak-instability) amplitudes from the baseline that was likely responsible for the earlier transition observed for taller roughness cases.

This paper reports the results of a comprehensive linear stability analysis of the boundary layer flow over the common research model with natural laminar flow (CRM-NLF) aircraft configuration. The flow conditions match selected test conditions from a recent wind tunnel experiment in the National Transonic Facility at the NASA Langley Research Center. Previous work has shown that the measured onset of laminar-turbulent transition during the experiments can be correlated with the linear amplification of Tollmien-Schlichting (TS) and stationary crossflow (CF) instabilities in the swept wing boundary layer. However, a significant scatter (N ∈ (4,9)) was observed in the values of the logarithmic amplification factor along the measured transition front. This previous analysis was based on an approximate basic state (based on a boundary layer code with conical flow approximation) and parallel stability computations without surface curvature effects. Here, we examine the effects of these various approximations with the goal of quantifying the resulting changes in the N-factor correlations. Specifically, both linear stability theory (LST) and the parabolized stability equations (PSE)are used in conjunction with an accurate definition of the laminar boundary layer flow as computed with a Navier-Stokes solver with a Reynolds-Averaged-Navier-Stokes (RANS) based turbulence model within the turbulent parts of the flow. Furthermore, the effects of instability wave propagation within a fully three-dimensional boundary layer are also evaluated by integrating the disturbance growth rates along suitably chosen, curvilinear (i.e., nonplanar) propagation trajectories. The results of this analysis are also used in an accompanying paper by Venkatachari et al. to develop improved, physics based transition predictions for the same CRM-NLF configuration.

Transition prediction is an important aspect of aerodynamic design because of its impact on skin friction and potential coupling with flow separation characteristics. Traditionally, the modeling of transition has relied on correlation-based empirical formulas based on integral quantities such as the shape factor of the boundary layer. However, in many applications of computational fluid dynamics, the shape factor is not straightforwardly available or not well-defined. We propose using the complete velocity profile along with other quantities (e.g., frequency, Reynolds number) to predict the perturbation amplification factor. While this can be achieved with regression models based on a classical fully connected neural network, such a model can be computationally more demanding. We propose a novel convolutional neural network inspired by the underlying physics as described by the stability equations. Specifically, convolutional layers are first used to extract integral quantities from the velocity profiles, and then fully connected layers are used to map the extracted integral quantities, along with frequency and Reynolds number, to the output (amplification ratio). Numerical tests on classical boundary layers clearly demonstrate the merits of the proposed method. More importantly, we demonstrate that, for Tollmien-Schlichting instabilities in two-dimensional, low-speed boundary layers, the proposed network encodes information in the boundary layer profiles into an integral quantity that is strongly correlated to a well-known, physically defined parameter – the shape factor.

This paper demonstrates the potential to use shape optimization for the design of vortex generators in an axisymmetric boundary layer. This shape optimization increases the amplitude of stationary streaks created by streamwise vorticity, with the goal of reducing the amplification of Mack mode instabilities. The test case under consideration matches a trajectory point during the ascent phase of the HIFiRE-1 flight experiment. Wall-mounted vortex generators are added to the cone and their shape is optimized to control the amplification of Mack mode instabilities that are known to initiate laminar-turbulent transition in this flow. An empirical objective function is developed based on the previous studies of optimal streaks. A constraint on the maximum streak amplitude is added to avoid the initiation of bypass transition. The shape optimization is conducted using SU2, an open-source suite for multiphysics simulation and design. A significant improvement is observed in an integral metric of the streak amplitude, while the maximum streak amplitude is maintained close to the baseline level. The qualitative features of the optimized geometry are discussed.

Direct numerical simulations (DNS) of flat-plate, zero-pressure-gradient turbulent boundary layers are presented for nominal freestream Mach numbers of 11 and 14 and a highly cooled wall (wall-to-recovery temperature of approximately 0.2). The flow conditions of the DNS are representative of the experimental data for a Mach 11.1 turbulent boundary layer on a flat plate that was tested at Calspan–University of Buffalo Research Center (CUBRC) and the operational conditions of the AEDC Hypervelocity Tunnel No. 9 at Mach 14. The wall shear stress and turbulent heat flux predicted by DNS show good comparisons with those measured at CUBRC and those modeled with a Baldwin-Lomax model. The generated DNS database extends the range of Reynolds numbers from those typical of previous DNS studies for hypersonic boundary-layer flows and confirms the validity of Morkovin’s hypothesis within the relatively broader range of Reynolds numbers considered in this study. A priori assessment of turbulent heat flux models with DNS data shows that the algebraic energy flux (AEF) formulation gives better predictions of the streamwise turbulent heat flux than the commonly used constant turbulent Prandtl number model while both models give similarly good predictions of the wall-normal turbulent heat flux. A posteriori assessment shows that the AEF model improves the prediction of the temperature profiles while keeping a good prediction of the velocity field.

An accurate physics-based transition prediction method integrated with computational fluid dynamics (CFD) solvers is pursued for hypersonic boundary layer flows over slender hypersonic vehicles at flight conditions. The geometry and flow conditions are selected to match relevant trajectory locations from the ascent phase of the HIFiRE-1 flight experiment, namely, a 7-degree half-angle cone with 2.5 mm nose radius, freestream Mach numbers in the range of 3.8 – 5.5 and freestream unit Reynolds numbers in the range of 3.3 × 10(exp 6) – 21.4 × 10(exp 6) m(exp -1). Earlier research had shown that the onset of transition during the HIFiRE-1 flight experiment correlated with an amplification factor of N ≈ 13.5 for the planar Mack modes. However, to incorporate the N-factor correlations into a CFD code, we investigate surrogate models for disturbance amplification that avoid the direct computation of stability characteristics. A commonly used approach for low-speed flows is based on an a priori database of stability characteristics for locally similar profiles. However, the results presented in this paper demonstrate that the application of this approach to hypersonic boundary layers over blunt spherical nose-tip cones leads to large, unacceptable errors in the predictions of amplification factors, mainly due to its failure in accounting for the effects of the entropy layer on the boundary-layer profiles along the length of the model. We propose and demonstrate an alternate approach that employs the stability computations for a canonical set of blunt cone configurations to train a physics-informed convolutional neural network model that is shown to provide substantially improved transition predictions for hypersonic flow configurations with entropy-layer effects. Furthermore, the excellent performance of the neural network model is also confirmed for cone configurations with nose radius and half-angle values that do not correspond to those used to build the database. Finally, the convolutional neural network model is shown to outperform the linear stability calculations for underresolved basic states.

Numerical and experimental studies have demonstrated that modal growth of planar Mack modes is responsible for laminar-turbulent transition on sharp cones at hypersonic speeds. However, the physical mechanisms that lead to transition onset upstream of the entropy-layer swallowing location over sufficiently blunt geometries are not well understood as yet. Modal amplification is too weak or nonexistent to initiate transition at moderate-to-large bluntness values. Nonmodal analysis shows that, with increasing nose bluntness, both planar and oblique traveling disturbances that peak within the entropy layer experience appreciable energy amplification. However, because of the relatively weak signature of the nonmodal traveling disturbances within the boundary-layer region, the route to transition onset subsequent to the nonmodal growth remains unclear. Thus, nonlinear parabolized stability equations (NPSE) and direct numerical simulations (DNS) have been used to investigate the potential transition mechanisms over a 7-degree blunt cone that was tested in the AFRL Mach-6 high-Reynoldsnumber facility. Computations are performed to separately follow the nonlinear development of two classes of inflow disturbances, namely, a pair of oblique traveling waves with equal but opposite angles with respect to the mean flow direction and a planar traveling wave. Results in both cases show an excellent agreement between the NPSE and DNS predictions, establishing that the NPSE is an accurate and efficient technique for predicting the nonlinear development for these particular nonmodal traveling disturbances. Computations reveal that the oblique mode interactions lead to the generation of stationary streaks inside the boundary layer that, in turn, facilitate the growth of a subharmonic sinuous disturbance. For relatively modest amplitudes of the inflow disturbance, the oblique-mode breakdown can lead to transition at the measured location of transition onset during the experiment. On the other hand, the nonlinear development of a planar traveling wave leads to the formation of inclined structures just above the boundary-layer edge and these structures are strongly reminiscent of the transitional events observed during blunt cone experiments by using schlieren flow visualizations.

The existing database of transition measurements in hypersonic ground facilities has established that, as the nosetip bluntness is increased, the onset of boundary layer transition over a circular cone at zero angle of attack shifts downstream. However, this trend is reversed at sufficiently large values of the nose Reynolds number, so that the transition onset location eventually moves upstream with a further increase in nose-tip bluntness. Because modal amplification is too weak to initiate transition at moderate-to-large bluntness values, nonmodal growth has been investigated as the potential basis for a physics-based model for the frustum transition. The present analysis investigates the nonmodal growth of traveling disturbances initiated within the nose-tip vicinity that peak within the entropy layer. Results show that, with increasing nose bluntness, both planar and oblique traveling disturbances experience appreciable energy amplification up to successively higher frequencies. For moderately blunt cones, the initial nonmmodal growth is followed by a partial decay that is more than overcome by an eventual, modal growth as Mack-mode waves. For larger bluntness values, the Mack-mode waves are not amplified anywhere upstream of the experimentally measured transition location, but the traveling modes still undergo a significant amount of nonmodal growth. This finding does not provide a definitive link between optimal growth and the onset of transition, but it is qualitatively consistent with the experimental observations that frustum transition in the absence of sufficient Mack-mode amplification implies a double peak in disturbance amplification and the appearance of transitional events above the boundary-layer edge.

The existing database of transition measurements in hypersonic ground facilities has established that the onset of boundary layer transition over a circular cone at zero angle of attack shifts downstream as the nosetip bluntness is increased with respect to a sharp cone. However, this trend is reversed at sufficiently large values of the nosetip Reynolds number, so that the transition onset location eventually moves upstream with a further increase in nosetip bluntness. This transition reversal phenomenon, which cannot be explained on the basis of linear stability theory, was the focus of a collaborative investigation under the NATO STO group AVT-240 on Hypersonic Boundary-Layer Transition Prediction. The current paper provides an overview of that effort, which included wind tunnel measurements in three different facilities and theoretical analysis related to modal and nonmodal amplification of boundary layer disturbances. Because neither first and second-mode waves nor entropy-layer instabilities are found to be substantially amplified to initiate transition at large bluntness values, transient (i.e., nonmodal) disturbance growth has been investigated as the potential basis for a physics based model for the transition reversal phenomenon. Results of the transient growth analysis indicate that stationary disturbances that are initiated within the nosetip or in the vicinity of the juncture between the nosetip and the frustum can undergo relatively significant nonmodal amplification and that the maximum energy gain increases nonlinearly with the nose radius of the cone. This finding does not provide a definitive link between transient growth and the onset of transition, but it is qualitatively consistent with the experimental observations that frustum transition during the reversal regime was highly sensitive to wall roughness, and furthermore, was dominated by disturbances that originated near the nosetip. Furthermore, the present analysis shows significant nonmodal growth of traveling disturbances that peak within the entropy layer and could also play a role in the transition reversal phenomenon.

The interaction of stationary streaks undergoing nonmodal growth with modally unstable instability waves in a hypersonic boundary-layer flow is studied using numerical computations. The geometry and flow conditions are selected to match a relevant trajectory location from the ascent phase of the HIFiRE-1 flight experiment; namely, a 7 degree half-angle, circular cone with 2.5 mm nose radius, freestream Mach number equal to 5.30, unit Reynolds number equal to 13.42 m-1, and wall-to-adiabatic temperature ratio of approximately 0.35 over most of the vehicle. This paper investigates the nonlinear evolution of initially linear optimal disturbances that evolve into finite-amplitude streaks, followed by an analysis of the modal instability characteristics of the perturbed, streaky boundary-layer flow. The investigation is performed with stationary direct numerical simulations (DNS) and plane-marching parabolized stability equations (PSE), in conjunction with partial-differential-equation-based planar eigenvalue analysis. The overall effect of streaks is to reduce the peak amplification factors of instability waves, indicating a possible downstream shift in the onset of laminar-turbulent transition. The present study confirms previous findings that the mean flow distortion of the nonlinear streak perturbation reduces the amplification rates of the Mack-mode instability. More importantly, however, the present results demonstrate that the spanwise varying component of the streak can produce a larger effect on the Mack-mode amplification. The study with selected azimuthal wavenumbers for the stationary streaks reveals that a wavenumber of approximately 1.4 times larger than the optimal wavenumber is more effective in stabilizing the planar Mack-mode instabilities. In the absence of unstable first-mode waves for the present cold-wall condition, transition onset is expected to be delayed until the peak streak amplitude increases to nearly 35 percent of the freestream velocity, when intrinsic instabilities of the boundary-layer streaks begin to dominate the transition process. For streak amplitudes below that limit a significant net stabilization is achieved, yielding a potential transition delay that can exceed 100 percent of the length of the laminar region in the uncontrolled case.

This paper investigates flow modifications induced by wall-mounted vortex generators (VGs), followed by an analysis of the modal instability of the perturbed, streaky boundary-layer flow. Results are presented both for a single array of VGs that was designed on the basis of optimal growth theory and for a VG configuration involving two separate arrays with opposite orientations that ware designed to provide staged control of flow instabilities while simultaneously reducing the amplification of streak instabilities resulting from the control devices. Earlier research had shown that the onset of transition during the HIFiRE-1 flight experiment, which did not include any control devices, correlated with an amplification factor of N = 14.7 for the planar Mack modes. If one assumes that the transition N -factor is not affected by the introduction of the VGs, then the control configurations based on a single array of VGs and two separate arrays would result in a transition delay of 17% and 40%, respectively. These findings suggest a passive flow control s to induce streaks that would delay transition in hypersonic boundary dominated by Mack-mode instabilities.

The “Reshotko-Tumin transition criterion" based on optimal transient growth successfully correlates laboratory measurements of roughness induced transition over blunt body configurations. Even though transient growth has not been conclusively linked to the measured onset of transition, the above correlation denotes the only available physics-based model for subcritical transition in blunt body flows, since the latter do not support any modal instabilities at typical experimental conditions. Unlike other established models based on empirical curve fits that are valid for a specific subclass of datasets, the optimal-growth-based transition criterion appears to provide a reasonable correlation with measurements in various wind tunnel and ballistic range facilities and for a broad range of surface temperature ratios. This paper is focused on optimal growth calculations that improve upon significant shortcomings of the computations underlying the Reshotko-Tumin correlation. The improved framework is applied to leeward transition over a spherical section forebody that was tested in the Mach 6 Adjustable Contour Expansion wind tunnel at Texas A&M University. The computed results highlight the significance of nonparallel basic state evolution, curvature terms, and an optimization procedure that varies both inflow and outflow locations of the transient growth interval. More important, the results indicate that the modified correlation is very close to its original form, and hence, that the accuracy of the transient-growth-based transition criterion is not compromised by using a more thorough theoretical framework. Yet the results also show that the optimal energy gain up to the predicted transition onset location can be rather small, highlighting the need to further investigate the optimal growth criterion for additional experimental configurations and to also uncover the in-depth physics underlying blunt body transition.

Optimal initial conditions for transient growth in a two-dimensional boundary layer flow correspond to stationary, counter-rotating vortices that subsequently develop into streamwise elongated streaks, which are characterized by an alternating pattern of low and high streamwise velocity. For incompressible flows, previous studies have shown that boundary layer modulation due to streaks below a threshold amplitude level can stabilize the Tollmien-Schlichting instability waves, resulting in a delay in the onset of laminar-turbulent transition. In the supersonic regime, the linearly, most-amplified waves become three-dimensional, corresponding to oblique, first-mode waves. This change in the character of dominant instabilities leads to an important change in the transition process, which is now dominated by oblique breakdown via nonlinear interactions between pairs of first-mode waves that propagate at equal but opposite angles with respect to the free stream. Because the oblique breakdown process is characterized by a rapid amplification of stationary streamwise streaks, artificial excitation of such streaks may be expected to promote transition in a supersonic boundary layer. Indeed, suppression of those streaks has been shown to delay the onset of transition in prior literature. Consistent with those findings, the present study shows that optimally growing stationary streaks indeed destabilize the first-mode waves, but only when the spanwise wavelength of the instability waves is equal to or smaller than twice the streak spacing. Transition in a benign disturbance environment typically involves first-mode waves with significantly longer spanwise wavelengths, and hence, these waves are stabilized by the optimal growth streaks. Thus, as long as the amplification factors for the destabilized, short wavelength instability waves remain below the threshold level for transition, a significant net stabilization is achieved, yielding a transition delay that is comparable to the length of the laminar region in the uncontrolled case.

The effect of stationary, finite-amplitude, linear and nonlinear optimal perturbations on the modal disturbance growth in a Mach 6 axisymmetric flow over a 7 deg. half-angle cone with 0:126 mm nose radius and 0:305 m length is investigated. The freestream parameters (M = 6, Re(exp 1) = 18 x 10(exp. 6) /m) are selected to match the flow conditions of a previous experiment in the VKI H3 hypersonic tunnel. Plane-marching parabolized stability equations are used in conjunction with a partial-differential equation based planar eigenvalue analysis to characterize the boundary layer instability in the presence of azimuthally periodic streaks. The streaks are observed to stabilize nominally planar Mack mode instabilities, although oblique Mack mode and first-mode disturbances are destabilized. Experimentally measured transition onset in the absence of any streaks correlates with an amplification factor of N = 6 for the planar Mack modes. For high enough streak amplitudes, the transition threshold of N = 6 is not reached by the Mack mode instabilities within the length of the cone; however, subharmonic first-mode instabilities, which are destabilized by the presence of the streaks, do reach N = 6 near the end of the cone. The highest stabilization is observed at streak amplitudes of approximately 20 percent of the freestream velocity. Because the use of initial disturbance profiles based on linear optimal growth theory may yield suboptimal control in the context of nonlinear streaks, the computational predictions are extended to nonlinear optimal growth theory. Results show that by using nonlinearly optimal perturbation leads to slightly enhanced stabilization of plane Mack mode disturbances as well as reduced destabilization of subharmonic first-mode disturbances.
