14. Quantitative analysis of brick-faced masonry: Examples from some large imperial buildings in Rome

Abstract

This paper aims to present some preliminary results of an ongoing study which started from the analysis of the external brick facing of the Aurelianic Walls. The methodology employed was to analyse the brick facing by sampling the brick wall surfaces, drawing consistent areas of 1x1 m2 in CAD, based on rectified photographs. These samples were then measured in detail to make a quantitative-statistical analysis of the elements constituting the brick facings, in order to yield standard parameters which could meaningfully describe their features. In this first part of the work, we tried to compare some of the most important imperial brick buildings, each with its own characteristic features. Sampling has covered the Aurelianic Walls extensively, focusing on the early periods of Aurelian and Honorius. After were sampled brick-faced walls from a Neronian building facing the Valley of the Colosseum; the substructures of the Baths of Trajan; and some sectors of the Domus Tiberiana, towards the north slope of the Palatine Hill.

El objetivo de este documento, es presentar resultados de un estudio en curso, comenzando con el análisis de la cortina externa en ladrillos de los muros Aurelianos. Como metodología de estudio, las capas de ladrillos fueron inspeccionadas a través de muestras de sus superficies, seleccionando partes de 1x1m2 dibujados en CAD, utilizando fotos sin distorsión. Dichas muestras, fueron medidas en detalle, para generar análisis de estadísticas cuantitativas de los elementos constituyentes de éstas cortinas, para obtener standars, que pueden describir sus características. En esta primera fase, tratamos de comparar algunas de los más importantes fabricantes de ladrillos imperiales, cada una con características especificas. El muestrario ha cubierto extensivamente los muros aurelianos, concentrándose en los periodos de Aureliano y Honorio. Luego, fueron estudiadas paredes de ladrillos de edificios de época neroniana, frente al valle del Coliseo; subestructuras de las termas de Trajano; sectores de la Domus Tiberiana, en dirección a la falda norte del Palatino.

Abstract

Background: The incidence of cutaneous melanoma (CM), the deadliest form of skin cancer, has gradually increased in the last decades among populations of European origin. Epidemiological studies suggested that farmers and agricultural workers are at an increased risk of CM because they were exposed to pesticides. However, little is known about the relationship between pesticides and CM. Objectives: To investigate the association between exposure to pesticides and CM by systematically reviewing the literature. Secondary aim was to determine the categories of pesticides mainly involved in CM development. Methods: A systematic review of the literature was performed up to September 2018 using MEDLINE, Embase and Web of Science. Studies assessing CM risk in licensed pesticide applicators were considered. Strict criteria were established to select independent studies and risk estimates; random effect models, taking into account heterogeneity, were applied. A pooled risk estimate for CM was calculated for the use of each type of pesticide and type of exposure. Between‐study and estimate heterogeneity was assessed and publication bias investigated. Results: A total of nine studies (two case–controls and seven cohorts) comprising 184 389 unique subjects were included. The summary relative risks for the categories 'herbicides – ever exposure', 'insecticides – ever exposure', 'any pesticide – ever exposure' and 'any pesticide – high exposure' resulted 1.85 [95% confidence interval (CI): 1.01, 3.36], 1.57 (95% CI: 0.58, 4.25), 1.31 (95% CI: 0.85, 2.04) and 2.17 (95% CI: 0.45, 10.36), respectively. Herbicides and insecticides had no between‐study heterogeneity (I2 = 0%), while a significant heterogeneity (I2 > 50%) was detected for the high exposure to any pesticide. No indication for publication bias was found. Conclusions: Individuals exposed to herbicides are at an increased risk of CM. Future properly designed observational studies are required to confirm this finding. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Embora a sazonalidade climática seja menos evidente nas regiões tropicais que nas temperadas, muitas espécies tropicais apresentam crescimento rítmico. A avaliação do crescimento em circunferência do tronco (CCT) permitirá obter informações sobre o desenvolvimento dos indivíduos de espécies arbóreas desta região. Esse estudo teve como objetivo avaliar o CCT de 11 espécies arbóreas de uma floresta estacional semidecidual no sul do Brasil, visando testar duas hipóteses: (i) existe sazonalidade no CCT das árvores e este crescimento está relacionado às variações climáticas da região de estudo; (ii) as características dos indivíduos (posição sociológica, altura da árvore, grau de ocupação por lianas, deciduidade e diâmetro à altura do peito) influenciam no incremento acumulado em circunferência. Para detectar a periodicidade do CCT foram implantadas faixas dendrométricas permanentes no tronco (altura do DAP) de 156 indivíduos. O acompanhamento do crescimento foi realizado mensalmente por um período de 18 meses. Foram feitas correlações do CCT mensal com a precipitação, temperatura e fotoperíodo para verificar a influencia dos fatores ambientais e análise de covariância para averiguar se as características dos indivíduos também interferiram no incremento acumulado em circunferência do tronco. As espécies apresentaram um padrão sazonal de CCT, com as maiores taxas de crescimento de outubro a dezembro, sendo que os parâmetros ambientais avaliados atuaram em conjunto - principalmente o fotoperíodo e a temperatura - promovendo essa sazonalidade e confirmando a primeira hipótese. Considerando as características dos indivíduos, somente o diâmetro do tronco correlacionou-se negativamente com o incremento acumulado em circunferência (b = -0,32; p = 0,02), aceitando parcialmente a segunda hipótese.

30. Melanoma attributable to sunbed use and tan seeking behaviours: an Italian survey

Abstract

Melanoma is the most deadly form of skin cancer and its incidence is increasing worldwide. In 2009, the International Agency for Research on Cancer classified the entire UV spectrum as carcinogenic. In many countries, including Italy, the use of tanning equipment by minors and individuals with high risk phenotypes has been banned. This study assessed tan-seeking behaviour in a Mediterranean population with a relatively high melanoma incidence, where a considerable time is spent tanning outdoors. Subjects spending the most time in the sun were typically young single men, who use significantly less sunscreen and sunglasses. The overall prevalence of sunbed use was 22% in youth (≤35 years old) and 18% of them used sunbeds throughout the year. Sunbed use in youth was greater for phenotypes at risk. In Italy, 3.8% of melanoma cases are attributable to sunbed use, more in women (4.2% vs 3.1%, for women and men respectively) and much more in the young (17%). Of 8013 new melanoma cases in 2008 in Italy, 293 were attributable to sunbed use, with a high proportion of these in women (168) and 1045 were attributable to sun exposure. Among youth, 172 cases were attributable to sunbed use and 140 exclusively to sunbed use. This analysis reveals that a large number of cancers each year in Italy could be avoided by changing cultural attitudes to tanning. Sun avoidance and protection is generally inadequate in adults, especially young men. These results have important implications for the primary prevention of melanoma.

Abstract

BACKGROUND: The World Health Organization classified the entire ultraviolet (UV) spectrum and artificial UV tanning devices as carcinogenic to humans. Italian law has prohibited the use of tanning equipment by children under 18 years of age and by high-risk populations. OBJECTIVES: The present large survey aimed to determine the prevalence of current sunbed use in Italy and to identify user characteristics. This study identifies starting points for future national interventions to reduce the health risks of exposure to artificial UV radiation. METHODS: In 2011 we conducted a survey of 4703 people in an area on the sunny Mediterranean coast in Italy. Through multivariate logistic models we investigated the associations of sunbed use with phenotypical factors. RESULTS: Overall prevalence of sunbed use was 20%, higher among women (22% vs. 16%; P < 0·0001), and young (22% vs. 17% for age < 35 years; P < 0·0001) and highly educated people (22% vs. 14%; P < 0·0001). Subjects at high risk of melanoma used sunbeds significantly more; i.e. people with freckles (25% vs. 18%; P < 0·0001), red hair (30% vs. 19%; P = 0·01) or fair eyes (22% vs. 19%; P = 0·006). Associations were confirmed in multivariate models. CONCLUSIONS: More skin cancer monitoring is needed at tanning centres, and educational campaigns should be promoted, especially for young women and subjects at high risk of melanoma.
