22. Reverse Engineering and Software Products Reuse to Teach Collaborative Web Portals: A Case Study with Final-Year Computer Science Students

Abstract

The development of collaborative Web applications does not follow a software engineering methodology. This is because when university students study Web applications in general, and collaborative Web portals in particular, they are not being trained in the use of software engineering techniques to develop collaborative Web portals. This paper presents a strategy for teaching collaborative Web portals based on reverse engineering and reuse mechanisms to engineer the collaborative Web portals' development. This strategy was successfully used in a final-year course of a Computer Science program at Carlos III University of Madrid, Spain. Its use has demonstrated an improvement in the maintainability of the Web projects developed as well as a decrease in the number of failures during the test phase. This is a very important step toward the engineering of Web applications. The students' grades for the same subject, with the same content and lecturers, also improved compared to those from previous years. The strategy, the details of its use, the results obtained after analyzing the projects the students developed, and their final grades are described in this paper. 24. The Place of Smart Occupational Health and Safety in Smart City Design

Abstract

Smart cities are a very clear example of complex systems, and their development focuses on the use of technology to transform every aspect of society and embrace the complexity of these transformations in order to promote the well-being and safety of the people who inhabit these cities. One essential, but often implicit, aspect that must be considered in the design of a smart city is occupational health and safety (OHS). After identifying a significant number of OHS issues that must be effectively addressed, a prospective analysis reveals that there is still an existing gap to be filled in the context of smart city design: an explicit guarantee of safety for workers in uncertain environments open to constant digital transformation changes. In this article, the authors present the VENTURA2020 model, an architectural capabilities-driven model that describes the main aspects to be taken into account to integrate smart OHS into smart city design.

Abstract

Software engineers and IT professionals face the challenge of envisioning the needs and wishes of their client companies, whose long‐term survivability depends on their adaptability to the digital business ecosystem, which is impregnating more or less every single sector of the economy. Looking at the data reported on the business digitalization project success rate, we realize that there is a lot of room for improvement. In this paper, we focus on the results of developing 10 business digitalization projects for 10 small and medium enterprises, where the software engineers in charge of the projects assessed the knowledge governance maturity of client companies before proposing any specific projects to support their digital businesses. We surveyed the software engineers participating in the above projects to gather their impressions of using knowledge governance assessment as a tool to predictively visualize the digital solution that best fits each digitalization project. Abstract

Stock-flow failure is a reasoning error in dynamic systems that has great societal relevance: people misjudge a level of accumulation (i.e., stock) considering the information on flows that increase (i.e., inflow) or decrease (i.e., outflow) over time. Many interventions, including the use of analogies and graphical manipulations, to counteract this failure and help people integrate the flow information have been tested with little or no success. We suggest that this error relates to the valence of a problem: the framing of the inflow or outflow direction as “good” or “bad” is associated with the direction of its accumulation over time. To explore the effects of valence on accumulation judgments, we employ a scenario of a common health problem: blood glucose control through sugar consumption and insulin flows. We also investigate improvements of performance in a second scenario that result after viewing a video of a dynamic system demonstrating the effects of the correct accumulation trend. Abstract

Software companies encourage and further the use of collaborative tools and skills at the workplace in pursuit of the benefits of their use: they improve communication, productivity and efficiency, and competitiveness. Besides, undergraduate and graduate software engineering computing curricula recommend subjects related to effective cooperative working and group learning. In order to align industry needs and curricula recommendations, universities should provide students with the collaborative knowledge and skills that they will require on the labour market once they finish their degrees. In this scenario, we asked three questions: Are collaborative tools beneficial to software projects? Is it easier for students with knowledge and skills of collaborative tools to find a job? Do enterprises use collaborative tools as a marketing strategy for the recruitment process or are they really empowering their employees to use collaborative tools? This paper explores these questions. We devised a survey addressing the above questions, which was administered to 86 recent computer science graduates. We applied statistical techniques to analyse the responses. From the data gathered during the survey, we conclude that the expected benefits of the use of collaborative tools are in fact corroborated, students skilled in the use of collaborative tools do find it easier to get jobs and companies are not only looking for people with collaborative skills but also use collaborative tools in their routine work processes.

Abstract

The 17th SEPG Europe conference was organized by the Software Engineering Institute (SEI) in collaboration with IEEE Software magazine and took place from June 5-7, 2012 in Madrid, Spain. SEPG Europe's goal is to bring together software and systems professionals who have a common passion to improve the processes they use to create the products and services they develop. This year, collaboration between SEPG Europe 2012 and IEEE Software magazine gave technical session presenters the chance to have a paper selected by the SEPG Europe 2012 Technical Committee for inclusion in this SEI report, as well the opportunity to be considered for inclusion in a future issue of IEEE Software magazine. Abstract

Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) have emerged as disruptors to higher education bringing the possibility to access learning contents to thousands of students from all over the world. MOOCs are a new way to design and deliver online learning. Learners become part of an on-line community where they can participate as reviewers, collaborate with each other and are engaged in watching videos and other multimedia resources. However, MOOCs are also generating a huge debate around three different aspects: the learning process including evaluation and certification criteria, the lack of skills among instructors to design and plan MOOCs and the technical and security issues of MOOC platforms. More specifically, institutions are currently making a great effort to become part of main facilitators' platforms. They are creating a good number of methodologies, guidelines and best practices to equip instructors with the necessary skills to produce highquality learning resources that can encourage learners' participation and decrease the dropout rate. On the other hand, engineering education is one of the main areas of interest in M OOC courses. In the software and computer engineering area it is possible to find a huge number of MOOCs in particular topics ranging from an introductory to a master level. However, just a few courses address a holistic view of a domain such as software engineering due to the intrinsic difficulty of summarizing in a few weeks the main concepts of an engineering discipline. That is why, in this paper, authors introduce an Agile MOOC Development Lifecycle (AMDL) to address the challenge of designing a MOOC from scratch. Afterwards, the framework is applied to create a MOOC course about software engineering for a non-technical audience and developed by a large and multidisciplinary team of 18 instructors. This experience is also reported as a case study to validate the proposed development lifecycle. Finally, some discussion, lessons learned and future research lines are also outlined. 41. Smart Intangible Knowledge Assets Valuation.

Abstract

Intellectual capital represents the intangible resources of wealth creation. Although there is no one definition of this concept, it is widely accepted that it can be split into human, structural and relational capital. Human capital refers to knowledge that resides in people; structural capital refers to knowledge that resides in the organization and technology; and relational capital refers to knowledge that resides in the relations with clients and stakeholders in general. Several models of intellectual capital models were developed from 1992 to 1998. These models work by managing a set of indicators which are part of the chosen intellectual capital model. Then again, the OECD has confirmed the advancement of knowledge-based economies, and intellectual capital looks to be very interesting as a field capable of explaining the value of knowledge in these growing knowledge-based economies. A problem arises, however, when a company decides to valuate its intellectual capital according to one of the above intellectual capital models. What happens is that existing intellectual capital models are designed to gather a set of indicators that per se are linked neither to the company's intangible knowledge assets nor to its business goals. So, how can intellectual capital really be used to valuate the knowledge intangible assets of a company? How can intellectual capital be smart? These are the questions that we address in this paper, illustrated by an example of a company smartly deploying intellectual capital as a tool for managing intangible knowledge assets.
