This thesis investigates conceptual networks —systems of organising, understanding and explaining thought and knowledge— and the ways in which they underlie both text and its mise en page across a range of thirteenth- and fourteenth-century French and Catalan literary texts and their manuscript witnesses. Each of the three chapters explores a separate corpus of texts, using two of four interrelated network theories: Michel Serres’ notion of parasites and hosts as the basic interconnecting units that combine to constitute all relational networks; the ubiquitous organizational tree; Gilles Deleuze’s concept of the fold as the primary factor in producing differentiation and identity; and Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari’s unruly, anti-hierarchical and anti-arborescent rhizomatic systems. The first chapter engages primarily with parasites and trees; the second with trees and folds; and the third with folds and rhizomes. However, resonances with the other network theories are discussed as they occur, in order to demonstrate the fundamentally interconnected and often interchangeable nature of these systems. Each chapter includes close analysis of manuscript witnesses of the texts under discussion. The first chapter, ‘Saints Denis and Fanuel: Parasitism and Arborescence on the Manuscript Page’, examines parasitic and arboreal networks in two hagiographic texts: late thirteenth- and early fourteenth-century prose redactions of the Vie de Saint Denis, and the thirteenth‐century hagiographic romance Li Romanz de Saint Fanuel. The second chapter, ‘Ramon Llull’s Folding Forests: The World, the Tree and the Book’, addresses arborescent and folding structures in Llull’s encyclopaedic Arbre de ciència [Tree of Science], composed between 1295 and 1296. The third chapter, ‘Transgender Genealogy: Turning, Folding and Crossing Gender’, considers three characters in medieval French texts who can be read as transgender: Saint Fanuel; the King of Torelore in Aucassin et Nicolette; and Blanchandin/e in Tristan de Nanteuil. The chapter explores the ways in which these characters’ queer trajectories can be understood through conceptions of directionality which relate to the fold and the rhizome.

5. Rare or Rarely-Used PUs as Descriptors of Literary Style. Aspects of Ausiàs March´s UFs Based on Corpus Linguistics and Translations

- Abstract
Paying attention to the frequency of use is also a key aspect in the characterization of literary style. In this case, the linguistic resources utilized by authors are important because they contextualize them within their time, context, and cultural movement. Rare linguistics elements are not less relevant, that is those used only by one or a few authors. We analyze examples that confirm the methodological relevance of Corpus Linguistics, translation and analysis of PUs so that we can better understand what makes Catalan classics unique in what referes to their verbal art. To do so, we focus on UPs –[verbal] locutions– with rare occurrences and in some cases with only 1 or 2 occurrences (or up to 5, always in a few authors or even in one single author). We have analyzed examples of single (or rare) occurrences of the great Valencian poet Ausiàs March.

- Abstract
The Llibre de les dones was one of the most successful works of Francesc Eiximenis. Although this book had not the same diffusion that other works such as the Llibre dels àngels or the Vida de Jesucrit, it made a big fortune, as proves the fact that not only six manuscripts and one incunabulum have been preserved, but also some fragmentary copies, a Spanish translation transmitted through eight testimonies and an adapted version called Carro de las donas. In spite of the book's success, since not long ago it didn't exist any study of the Catalan textual tradition. In this paper are shown the results of the ecdotic analysis on the first hundred chapters of the book and it is proposed a possible stemma codicum. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The groundbreaking English language translation of Tirant lo Blanc by New York poet and academic David Rosenthal remains dominant three decades after its initial, and celebrated, release. Rosenthal’s controversially fluid and concise rendering of the Valencian classic survived a serious challenge 20 years ago by a more literal version from a well-meaning amateur translator and journeyman academic backed by a leading U.S.-based Catalan scholar. The article reviews the controversy and compares the two versions, adding comments from some of the key critics.

The Occitan «mala cansó» of the twelfth and thirteenth centuries and the Catalan «maldit» of the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries both display a singular aspect of medieval literary misogyny. In both cases criticism is not levelled against women in general, but against a particular lady who has been previously loved by the poet and is now rejected. The poet blames her directly and harshly because, after leaving him, she has given herself to a man from an inferior social background. As a result, the poet bids farewell to her and moves away. Some of the Catalan poets of the Middle Ages persisted in this literary outlet. They borrowed for their own «maldits» the motifs and expressions that were characteristic of the break-up and the violent farewell, and adapted them to their own language and to the bourgeois environment of the towns.

The «Elegia di madonna Fiammetta» has an evident impact of the story of Leandre and Hero, especially in the moments in which the lady suffers while waiting for her lover, who never comes. Fiammetta makes obvious this parallelism on several occasions, and manages to invent an end for the story loaded of pathos. Joan Roís de Corella realises about this relationship between both two works and makes the inverse path: he uses the tone and some narrative elements of the Elegia for writing his Leander and Hero. It is demonstrated that the so contreversial end of Corella’s story is not original of the Valencian, but it also depends on Boccaccio’s text.

Jordi de Sant Jordi uses more than thirty comparisons in his lyric poetry. These may be classified on the basis of their typology and semantic functions: true comparisons (where two elements are compared by means of a connector, the first being defined as ‘real’ and corresponding to the situation of the lyric persona, the second, figurative, presenting in metaphorical terms the same characteristics as the first element); comparisons between the ‘real’ situation and that of an unspecified human being, to which reference is made by means of the demonstrative ‘the one’ («axí com cell...»); hyperbolic comparisons, where the ‘real’ element is given hyperbolically as having to the same or to a greater extent a quality for which the second element is the example par excellence (‘stronger than Hercules’). Finally, we have identified a particular figure —which we have called an ‘abbreviated priamel’— whereby two situations are given between which the lyric persona must choose, stating that it prefers one and not the other.

Jaume Roig’s Espill constitutes one of the masterpieces in the history of Catalan literature. On the pages of the present article the attention will be put on one of its main thematic subjects, that is marriage, treated on the basis of a large perspective, whose goal will be to integrate the results of interdisciplinary analyses from the fields of anthropology, theology or cultural studies, in order to project an all-embracing view that will allow to configure the Spill’s signifiers polyhedron, which relies on its precious and singular textual ambiguity. In this frame and around the marriage’s core, the textual presence of sexuality marks, family relations and amor hereos will be analyzed in detail, for finally presenting a reading proposal of the main character’s matrimonial episodes from an exegetical sight.

Y ambos parece que anticiparon un «virgilianismo político» interpretable como la idea de embellecer literariamente los hechos históricos para eternizar la gloria militar en un digno formato., Enrique de Villena (1384-1434), a nobleman keen on arts, a bilingual author in Catalan and Spanish, who lived for some years (ca. 1416-1429) –in a sporadic way– in the Valencian court of Alfonso V of Aragon and John of Navarre, had an influence on the concept of literature to the author of the chivalric novel Curial e Güelfa (Enyego d’Àvalos?), written in Catalan (Naples-Milan, ca. 1445-1448) and which could be related with the Italian court of the Magnanimous. The Curial displays intertextual con-nections with Villena’s work, apart from shared hapaxes and neologisms. The author was aware of –undoubtedly– Los dotze treballs d’Hèrcules (Valencia, 1417) and parodied mythographic mistakes from the romanced, glossed and moralised Aeneid by Villena (Valencia, 1427-1429), two works that he alludes to implicitly in his own. Both writers spread the ideal of the vir scientificus Hercules (Coluccio Salutati) as an allegory of the effort the sçientíficos/scientífichs knights put on studying the Greek-Latin classics to grow up in virtue. And both seem to anticipate a «political virgilianism» which could be interpreted as the idea of embellishing literarily the historical events to perpetuate the military glory in a respectable format.

- Abstract
This article looks at the interest of readers of the 16th century in the life of Ausiàs March. The most remote models should have been the lives of troubadours, but there was also interest in the humanistic biographies of Dante or Petrarch, which could have influenced too. The article takes into consideration the manuscripts and printed testimonies that provide information –not always right–, about the life of the medieval Valencian poet., Questo articolo esamina l'interesse dei lettori del XVI secolo per la vita di Ausiàs March.

This contribution is a further partial anticipation of the critical edition of the mythological faules of Joan Roís de Corella (15th century) for Barcino (ENC), after that appeared in Magnificat, vol.3, 2016. It focuses on one of the author's most mature and significant faules, as well as one of the most prestigious testimonies both of the presence of the myth of Ero and Leandro in the Iberian 15th century, and of the peninsular reception of the Heroides. The paper consists of two parts. In the first part, Introduction, the current situation of the studies related to the Istòria is first summarized. Next, the analysis of the literary memory that supports the discursive construction of the faula is provided, with the intent of demonstrating how the narration actualizes a game of mirroring, projections, refractions, intertextual references, and symbolic-allusive evocations that make res and characters the reviviscence of a plurality of classical and medieval models. Such a reviviscence results loaded of a new pathetic energy. The analysis is based on certain thematic words and specific topical-rhetorical matrices, reused either a lo profano or a lo divino, always within the idea of “dying together" and of love beyond death. It focuses on the communication strategies through which the text - a ficció sentimental, become a point of convergence of thematic, metaphorical and figural intertwinements, anchored to the Tristanian, lyrical-amorous, ausiasmarquiana, cancioneril and Passionist imagery of planctus virginis - transforms memory and reuse into an invention. The second part of the paper is the critical edition of the text. Anticipated by the Criteria of Edition, it contains the Text, with footnotes concerning the constitutio textus, and the Critical Apparatus.

For the purposes of this article, a complete corpus of the phraseological units in the Llibre dels fets was compiled in order to study some of the idioms and proverbs in the text in the context in which they are used. The aim here was to analyze some of the text’s formal aspects and the conceptual and stylistic connotations that emerge from them. This contribution is a partial anticipation of the integral critical edition of the mythological faules of Joan Roís de Corella(XV century) for Barcino (ENC). It derives from the need to revise the textual situation of the most representative faula of the initial Corellan narrative phase, namely Lamentació de Mirra, de Narciso, de Píramus i Tisbe, and to propose, where necessary, new textual lessons. It consists of an introductory section followed by a new edition of the text with its critical and complementary apparatuses. In the introduction, essential information is at first provided on the manuscript's tradition and previous editions of the Lamentacions, otherwise known as Lo jardí de amor, with reference to the few existing papers specifically dedicated to it. Then, reflections on the diegetic and semantic coherence of the Corellannarration follow, by inspecting on why the author combines and how he amalgams the three myths, and focusing on the traits of the faula’s autonomy from Ovidian (or neo-Ovidian) formulation of the three stories. This new edition of the faula is accompanied by footnotes, where questions related to the constitutio textus are discussed in detail.

L’estudi introductori aporta dades documentals inèdites que permeten traçar una biografia de Joan Pasqual i descriure el context cultural que l’induí a adoptar Dante com a model, The Tractat de les penes particulars d’infern, by Joan Pasqual, a Master of Theology and Franciscan from Castelló d’Empúries, is part of a work of theological diffusion divided in two volumes: the Llibre de beatitud, dedicated in 1436 to Joan Llull, chief counselor of Barcelona, and the Llibre de pena, including this Tractat intended for the theological description of the particular punishments in hell, although its main sources are poetical: Dante’s Inferno, the first draft of the Comentum by Pietro Alighieri and the third draft of De fabulis poetarum (or Ovidius moralizatus) by Pierre Bersuire. The establishment of the critical text consists on an emendatio of the unique manuscript (Biblioteca de Catalunya, 468, fol. 164-207), assisted by these sources. The introductory study contributes some unpublished documentary data which enables to trace a biography of Joan Pasqual and to describe the cultural context that induced him to take Dante as a model

This article offers a historical survey of the twentieth-century digital formats used in a small field of the Humanities, medieval Catalan philology, as representative of many other non avant-garde, text-centred areas of humanist academic research: Word- and text management, alongside with lexical and bibliographical databases, were its first digital endeavours. The article concludes with the briefest assessment of digital challenges for the immediate future, with an emphasis on publishing tools: pdf versus epub, and the acelerating process of sharing the newest research through the new academic social networks. Open culture and open-data agreements, mainly through Creative Commons, are advocated.

In the present paper, Fèlix Manel Alarcon aims to further improve the knowledge on one of the most popular lifes in Medieval hagiography: that of the Dominican Father Vicent Ferrer.

It is demonstrated that the so contreversial end of Corella’s story is not original of the Valencian, but it also depends on Boccaccio’s text

Linguistics ,lcsh:P1-1091 ,lcsh:P ,Medieval literature ,Literatura catalana - Abstract
[ENG] The Occitan «mala cansó» of the twelfth and thirteenth centuries and the Catalan «maldit» of the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries both display a singular aspect of medieval literary misogyny.

As is often revealed in the terminology medieval translators used, translation cannot be considered apart from the academic practices of gloss and commentary. In translations from Latin into the vernaculars, the value and character of translated texts is conditioned by these hermeneutical instruments as well as by formal manipulations. Their reception, their reading, and the possibilities of their literary exploitation are therefore affected. This paper aims to describe and illustrate these phenomena in Catalan medieval translations. More particularly, it aims to show the way in which Ausiàs March and Joanot Martorell managed to turn translations of Seneca's Tragèdies and Ovid's Heroides, already modified by prosification and commentary, into rhetorical and stylistic models.

This 1987 PhD dissertation, was de facto supervised by professors Lola Badia (Universitat de Barcelona) and Alan Deyermond (Queen Mary University of London), although, because of legal limitations at that time, supervision was officially signed by another professor). This was a pioneer work in the field of women’s studies, particularly in the so-called “querelle des femmes”, although, as the dissertation study specifies, this label would only become known as such in post-medieval times. This work, then, does not deal with all misogynistic references in the whole corpus of medieval Catalan literature (that would be quite impossible in one publication), but only with those texts arguing for or against women in the context of the medieval literary debate on whether women were inherently good or evil. Therefore, an inventory, analysis, and history of the medieval Catalan works engaged with the literary debate on women is presented, work after work. Each topic within this debate is put into its western European context, with a special attention to medieval Latin, French and Occitan works with which the Catalan texts engage or follow. Works studied include: --Troubadour times, with an eye to secular as well as clerical works (including Ramon Llull’s), and within this chapter, troubadour Cerverí de Girona and his debate works, with a special attention to his Maldit bendit, in which this debate develops in detail. Latin as well as vernacular sources are established for it. --Fourteenth century, with attention to lyrical poems, including Jaume March and Pere March, followed by clerical literature, especially Francesc Eiximenis’s Llibre de les dones and Crestià; also the Facet, an educational text translated from a twelfth-century Latin original, as well as the anonymous Sermó del bisbetó, finally focusing on the debate on women within Bernat Metge’s Lo somni, which is dissected in detail, and its cultural references put in context. --Fifteenth century, which is the longest part of this dissertation, as witnesses are more abundant. The chapter starts with a survey of what would happen in neighbouring contemporary Castile, and the problems that would arise when debate on women, usual in Catalan literature, starts arriving in that kingdom (which, unlike most parts of Europe, had kept quite apart from this literary debate). After that, it studies some lyrical works that deal with debate on women, and establishes its cultural debts: Jordi de Sant Jordi, Ausiàs March, Ramon Boter, the Conhort, and the Bendir de dones are analyzed. After that, a survey of this debate on fifteenth-century narrative works is presented, with an eye to a fabliau, Francesc de la Via’s Llibre de fra Bernat, and then to Tirant lo Blanc, Curial e Güelfa, the spectacular pro-feminist Vita Christi by Isabel de Villena, and Joan Roís de Corella’s Triumfo de les dones. But the protagonist of this chapter is Jaume Roig’s Espill, which deals with this debate, taking the anti-feminist part with a force not previously known in western Europe. This formidable inventory of misogynistic topics is dissected and each topic put in its cultural context. This last part would become the origin of Rosanna Cantavella’s later monograph Els cards I el llir: una lectura de l’“Espill” de Jaume Roig (Quaderns Crema, 1992). In sum, this pioneer dissertation shows that this kind of literary production in Catalan followed quite general western European patterns, and especially French models (among many others, Jean de Meung’s Roman de la Rose), which are identified and given the necessary acknowledgement.
