- Abstract
Medical Professionalism: Theory, Education, and Practice provides a comprehensive account of three tracks of medical professionalism - the conceptual, the teaching and assessment, and the practical - in a single resource from leading experts in the field. Innovatively it provides new perspectives on topics such as managing conscientious objections, social media use by physicians, physician resiliency and remediation, health law and environmental stewardship that have not previously been addressed specifically through the lens of medical professionalism. Part A focuses on the definitions, theoretical underpinnings, and scope of medical professionalism. Part B explores different ways to understand and educate for medical professionalism along the continuum of medical practice. Part C assesses various practice issues through the lens of medical professionalism. Finally, Part D assesses organizational issues through the lens of medical professionalism. It includes narrative prologues to each section, and a conclusion that assesses how technological innovations in health care create several tensions that the field of medical professionalism will need to address in the future. This book appeals to academics, medical students, bioethics students, health care administrators and managers, physicians, and health care researchers.

- Abstract
This book examines the relationship between media and medicine. Drawing on insights from anthropology, linguistics, and media studies, it considers the fundamental role of news coverage in constructing wider cultural understandings of health and disease. The authors advance the notion of ‘biomediatization'and demonstrate how health knowledge is co-produced through connections between dispersed sites of knowledge making and through multiple forms of expertise. The chapters offer an innovative combination of media content analysis and ethnographic data on the production and circulation of health news, drawing on work with journalists, clinicians, health officials, medical researchers, marketers, and audiences. New to this edition are new case studies, in particular about the COVID-19 pandemic. The first case study looks at pharmaceutical and biotech news, and how journalists portray the flow of information across the boundaries between science and business. The next two case studies examine pandemic news, beginning with the 2009 H1N1 “swine flu” pandemic and continuing to the COVID-19 pandemic. The final case study examines the treatment of race and racism in health news, looking at the ways it interacts with cultural constructions of health citizenship, and the forces that have produced a shift from deracialization of health news to a much stronger focus on race and racism in contemporary health news. This book is ideal for undergraduate students and scholars across the social sciences, health sciences, cultural studies, and journalism.

- Abstract
The second edition of this book builds on the success of the first edition, which had many unique features including an emphasis on success in context and how women can thrive in today's clinical research environment. In this new edition, Women Rock Science incorporates promoting inclusivity of gender diverse persons, working in the hybrid world since the COVID-19 pandemic, and the value of diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI), with lessons learned from other women scientists, throughout the book. This book provides key strategies and skills around a central conceptual model as well as a sense of community with other women scientists. Clinical academic research is conducted in many forms, and Women Rock Science speaks to lab-based work, clinical work, health services/implementation science, quality improvement, medical education, health equity, and DEI-focused research throughout its chapters. The approaches and insights addressed are not narrowlyfocused on a discipline or a methodology of research. Rather, Women Rock Science addresses how to achieve excellence in research, across disciplines, within an academic institution. Described as the'unwritten rules'of successfully navigating a clinical academic research career, Women Rock Science is a valuable resource that can be used in a variety of settings. It is beneficial for University classes, lab group meetings, and can be shared with one's community of mentors, mentees and colleagues.

- Abstract
Though first a doctor who treated patients, the author became a professor, questioning facts (researching), exciting students (teaching), borrowing ideas (from the breadth of science, statistics, technology, engineering and medicine), and challenging'how it all works'. Though beginning gently, the question in the book eventually leads fiercely into how research, teaching, practice and service really occur, and to ferocious challenges both inside academia and out in society. It is hoped that this double-ferocity will be useful: to students wondering about their futures; to physician and scientist parents looking at the possibility of their children following them; to all parents and grandparents worrying about the careers of all offspring; to anyone interested in the processes of discovery, teaching, and service; and for everyone, concerned about the wider implications for education and for society.

- Abstract
What does it mean to help save someone's life? How does it feel to nearly kill a patient? Can we keep our patients safe at night? In the face of overwhelming pressures, can we thrive or only survive? And is a happy life as a doctor still possible? In the early months and years of work, it is these kinds of questions, rather than any technical or knowledge-based queries, which preoccupy many new doctors. This elusive, hidden curriculum is pervasive within departments, around hospitals and across health systems, but is rarely, if ever, explicitly examined and discussed. At its core is the issue that should matter above all others – how we can keep our patients as safe as possible. The Bleep Test combines gripping and startlingly vulnerable recollections of early experiences on the wards with an array of research findings, from psychology and human biology to anthropology, business and behavioural economics. Acknowledging that the truly complex challenges facing new doctors lie far beyond the realms of the traditional medical sciences in which they were trained, the book explains that the shift to being a doctor depends on first understanding how we think, reason and behave as someone we have been all our lives – a human amongst humans. Focused on the experiences of, and the issues facing, recently qualified medics, The Bleep Test is not only for young doctors, but also for anyone who manages them, works with them, cares for them or may one day depend on them.

- Abstract
There are nearly 24,000 ophthalmologists in the United States, with 500 physicians newly entering the ophthalmology field each year and approximately half of those being women. Although women now represent approximately half of all ophthalmologists, gender disparities remain when it comes to certain subspecialties (e.g., surgical retina), leadership roles (e.g., department chairs), industry involvement (e.g., consultancy and advisory board positions), and even academic publications. There has been a recently heightened interest in female representation in this field which has manifested in several ways (e.g., conferences geared towards women in ophthalmology, non-peer-reviewed publications about women in ophthalmology, and mentorship programs specifically for women). This book is the first of its kind in procuring and disseminating information—pertaining to both career and life—in an organized, concrete, and enduring way. Women in Ophthalmology is a comprehensive collection of chapters primarily written by women in the field of ophthalmology. The book aims to guide others through milestones and challenges women may face during their careers, and shares sound insights into how to deal with unique issues both inside and outside the workplace. Topics that are widely applicable to all who work in ophthalmology are included, such as finding mentors, collaborating within industry, handling work-life balance, and seeking out leadership opportunities. Each chapter combines personal anecdotes with knowledge from leaders in the field which both men and women will find highly valuable.

- Abstract
This first-of-its-kind book for underrepresented racial and ethnic minorities (URM), women, and sexual and gender minorities in medicine offers the core knowledge and skills needed to achieve a well-planned, fulfilling career in academic medicine. The knowledge and skills provided by the esteemed co-authors, successful diverse pre-faculty, and junior and senior academicians, are complemented by their inspirational and motivational stories. Increasing diversity in the academic medicine workforce has been identified and embraced as a core value of institutional excellence at nearly all academic institutions and professional associations. Despite this established core value, certain groups such as Black/African-American, Latino/Hispanic, American Indian/Alaska Native-identified individuals, women, and sexual and gender minorities, are still present in lower proportions compared with the general population and lack inclusion. In 12 chapters and witha unique focus on a practical approach to increasing diversity and inclusion in academic medicine, this book demystifies the often-insular world of academic medicine. It comprehensively outlines career opportunities and associated responsibilities, how to transform academic-related work to scholarship, and offers a clear and transparent look into the academic appointment and promotion process. By focusing on the practical steps described in this handy book, students and residents can develop a strong foundation for an academic medicine career and succeed in becoming the next generation of diverse faculty and administrators.

At the same time, faculty career tracks and promotion requirements have changed dramatically and medical schools have introduced multiple non-tenure career tracks. Currently, only about 25% of the approximately 150,000 members of clinical departments. This book provides insights and recommendations on career planning and academic promotion for clinical faculty members. It also addresses much of the “mythology” surrounding the APT process and demonstrates how academic promotion should be used as a career-building process rather than a daunting high-risk event. Topics include concepts and processes within academic promotion; navigating the academic promotion and tenure process; and managing the outcome of the APT application. Academic Promotion for Clinicians is a valuable resource for clinical medicine faculty members as they engage in and successfully handle the challenges in the APT process and thus realize their career goals.

- Abstract
Professionalism is a complex and highly disputed idea of crucial importance in a range of fields, not least health and social care. It can inspire people by reminding them of workplace ideals and the value of occupational expertise. But it can also feel threatening and de-motivating; for example, if it is used to demand ever more from people working in very challenging circumstances. The language of professionalism can evoke a special relationship of trust between service users and practitioners. But it can also suggest a social distance between two classes of people; high status professionals and their lower status'non-professional'clients. This book is an original and accessible guide to these ambiguities and complexities. Cribb and Gewirtz clarify the nature of professionalism and explain and defend its importance, providing an understanding of, and an analytical engagement with, both idealistic and critical perspectives. In addition, the authors assess the implications of contemporary policy trends for professional work, showing how they may be radically altering our understanding of the'good'professional. This inviting and reflective study draws upon examples and case studies and weaves in a range of relevant theoretical concepts and perspectives. Written in a style that encourages and supports further reflection on this complex topic, Professionalism is the only book of its kind for practitioners, researchers and students in health and social care.

- Abstract
Career changes are becoming common among professionals in recent years. Many physicians may want to change direction, but often do not know whether it is the right thing to do or if pursuing a career outside of clinical practice would achieve their professional goals. Doctors have the training and education to contribute to society in many beneficial ways in addition to traditional clinical practice. Yet, there is no formal mapped-out route for doctors who want to pursue alternative careers, which is where Careers Beyond Clinical Medicine comes in. Doctors at any stage, from early in training to mid-career, to nearing retirement, can use Careers Beyond Clinical Medicine to clearly evaluate the issues involved when considering a career change. This book shows physicians how they can serve society and patients in innovative ways, and make a notable impact on health care delivery, policy and quality when they use their medical background in a non-traditional career pursuit. The numerous unadvertised opportunities for physicians are explored and a step-by-step route with practical advice for finding the best career is described. Recent advances in healthcare technology, medical science, patient education require physicians to play new roles that have not traditionally been well-defined. Doctors can innovate and have a long-term productive impact on healthcare in the United States and throughout the world if they learn to seize the non-traditional career opportunities available to physicians, or even create a new way to fill a void in health care. Careers Beyond Clinical Medicine helps illuminate that path.

Increasingly, physicians are leveraging their medical training and expertise to pursue careers in non-traditional arenas. Their goals are diverse: · Explore consulting as a way to improve patient care· Lay the foundation for a career in academic medicine· Provide leadership in healthcare · Strengthen ties between a clinic and the community· Broaden one's experience as a medical student · As a journalist or writer, open a window onto medicine for non-experts Some physicians will pursue another degree, while others may not, in anticipation of moving into public service, business, education, law, or organized medicine.
