- Abstract
Acorus calamus Linn. has many beneficial effects on humans. It is a semiaquatic and perennial herb with rhizomes. Acorus calamus is being used in traditional systems of medicine and also in folklore practices. Acorus calamus is used in treating many diseases like mental ailments such as schizophrenia, epilepsy, dysentery, chronic diarrhea, asthma, cough, etc. It has antimicrobial, antidiarrhoeal, neuroprotective, anticholinesterase, antioxidant properties, etc. Many studies showed that A. calamus has been used as an insecticide and repellent for insects. The essential oils, dried powder as well as solvent extracts of A. calamus possess significant insecticidal activities.
