Abstract

Includes bibliographical references (pages 267-299) This research takes up a governmentality framework informed by Foucault, together with selected feminist post-structural views of subjectivity, to explore the underlying assumptions of the cross-cultural mentoring of International Medical Graduates (IMGs). This study challenges the notion of mentoring by viewing it, not as a benign, non-political practice, but as a socially situated practice within a larger political and economic network of governmental and institutional relations of power. As such, this calls into question the practice of mentoring as a discursive practice aimed toward the constitution of particular identities. In taking up Foucault’s concepts of governmentality, this research explores the ways in which mentoring contributes to shaping the IMG as an ‘ideal’ physician, capable of working independently within medical practice in rural Canada.
