This volume presents the proceedings of the joint conference of the European Medical and Biological Engineering Conference (EMBEC) and the Nordic-Baltic Conference on Biomedical Engineering and Medical Physics (NBC), held in Tampere, Finland, in June 2017. The proceedings present all traditional biomedical engineering areas, but also highlight new emerging fields, such as tissue engineering, bioinformatics, biosensing, neurotechnology, additive manufacturing technologies for medicine and biology, and bioimaging, to name a few. Moreover, it emphasizes the role of education, translational research, and commercialization.

This book presents the proceedings of the IUPESM World Biomedical Engineering and Medical Physics, a tri-annual high-level policy meeting dedicated exclusively to furthering the role of biomedical engineering and medical physics in medicine. The book offers papers about emerging issues related to the development and sustainability of the role and impact of medical physicists and biomedical engineers in medicine and healthcare. It provides a unique and important forum to secure a coordinated, multileveled global response to the need, demand and importance of creating and supporting strong academic and clinical teams of biomedical engineers and medical physicists for the benefit of human health.

The congress's unique structure represents the two dimensions of technology and medicine: 13 themes on science and medical technologies intersect with five challenging main topics of medicine to create a maximum of synergy and integration of aspects on research, development and application. Each of the congress themes was chaired by two leading experts. The themes address specific topics of medicine and technology that provide multiple and excellent opportunities for exchanges.

The NATO Advanced Study Institute (ASI) on Physics and Engineering of Medical Imaging has addressed a subject which in the wide area of biomedical technology is one of those which are showing greater impact in the practice of medicine for the ability to picture both Anatomy and Physiology. The information and accuracy obtained by whatever imaging methodology is a complex result of a multidisciplinary effort of several sciences such as Physics, Engineering, Electronics, Chemistry, Medicine, etc... Development has occurred through work performed in different environments such as basic and applied research laboratories, industries and clinical centers, with the aim of achieving an efficient transfer of know-how and technology for the improvement of both investigation possibilities and health care. On one hand, such an effort requires an ever-increasing committment of human and financial resources at research and industrial level, and, on the other, it meets serious difficulties in recruiting the necessary human expertise oriented to this technology which breaks with the tradi tiona I academic borders of the single disciplines. Furthermore, the scientific community is continually dealing with the problem of increasing the performance and, at the same time, complexity and costs of instruments, applying more and more sophisticated technology in an effort to meet the demand for more complete and accurate clinical information. The scientific program of this ASI and the qualification of the authors reveals the intrinsic complexity of the development process of the Imaging methodologies.

This Advanced Study Institute was arranged to discuss in depth the physical and technical basis of the latest developments in methods of measurement and image analysis suitable for determining the prop­ erties of cells and tissues and for evaluating medical structures. All topics under consideration have benefitted dramatically from an injection of new ideas during the past 10 years, and some have developed even more recently. The Institute brought together lecturers and participants from 14 different countries, and the subject matter recorded in this volume may be considered under two general headings. The first part of the meeting concentrated on techniques that are most appropriate at the cellular level. One major area of develop­ ment has been centered on attempts to classify cells by computerized ex­ traction of visual features, and here, it was notable how different techniques frequently complement each other. This part of the meeting also examined mechanisms of damage at the cellular level caused by different forms of radiation, and the contrasting effects of ionizing radiation, ultraviolet light and ultrasound were highlighted.

The Nato Advanced Study Institute ASI 981171 was organised at the European Scientific Institute of Archamps (ESI, Archamps France) from October 26 to November 8, 2005. Everyy ear in autumn ESI organises the European School of Medical Physics, which covers a large spectrum of topics, ranging from Medical Imaging to Radiotherapy, over a period of five weeks. Thanks to the Cooperative Science and Technologys ub programme of th e NATO Science Division, the first two weeks were replaced this year by the ASI course dedicated to “Optimising Detectors, Imaging & Computing Technologies from Nuclear Physics in General to Secur ity Applications”. This allowed the participation of experts and students fr om 20 different countries, with diverse cultural background and professional experience (Africa, America, Asia, and Europe). A further positive outcome of NATO ASI participation is the publication of this book, which contains the lectures series contributed by speakers during the ASI weeks. We hope it will be a reference book in Medical Imaging, addressing an audience of young medical physicists everywhere in the world, who are wishing to review the physics foundations of the relevant technologies, catch up with the state of the art and look ahead into future developments in their field. The ASI course was structured in two pa rts, defined by the use or absence of ionising radiation in the medical imaging techniques of interest.

This volume contains papers presented at the Congress on the following topics: physics of biological systems; study and measurement of physiological parameters; dosimetry and clinical dosimetry; medical imaging; biomedical instrumentation and quality assurance; optics and laser applications in biology and medicine; physics methodologies in environmental science.
