There can be no doubt that digital technologies are set to become ever more intrinsic to many areas of healthcare in the future. This book presents the proceedings of Healthcare of the Future 2022, held on 20 May 2022 in Biel/Bienne, Switzerland. This 2022 edition of the medical informatics conference has the subtitle and theme: Digital Health – From Vision to Best Practice! The conference explores recent advances in the deployment of digital technologies in areas such as eHealth, mHealth, personalized health and workflow-based health applications. The overarching aim of the conference is to bridge or eliminate current gaps in information with regard to outpatient care, inpatient care and the interfaces between them. The conference invited submissions for a main track and a young researchers track, and 19 papers are included here; 10 from the main track and 9 from young researchers. All papers have been peer reviewed by 2 reviewers. The papers are divided into 8 sections: advancing interoperability; semantic interoperability; medical informatics for medical research; evaluation of it influence; apps for patients and healthcare professionals parts 1 & 2; workflow based support in patient care; and research in medicine and medical informatics. Presenting an overview of developments and research aimed at improving and accelerating healthcare processes, the book will be of interest to healthcare professionals from a wide range of disciplines.

This book constitutes the proceeding from IEEE EMBS International Student Conference (ISC) held online in Zabrze, 11-12th December, 2020. Imagining the healthcare of the future is an interesting exercise, and although nobody can predict precisely what systems might operate in ten year's time, the possibilities which already exist can give us a clue as to how healthcare may be managed by 2030. This book presents papers from the conference Healthcare of the Future, held in Biel/Bienne, Switzerland, on 5 April 2019. The conference reflects some of the results of a two year multi-stakeholder Swiss research program in medical informatics. The research program, which began in 2016, saw 25 stakeholders cooperating for an integrated cross-sectoral treatment pathway with the goal of avoiding communication gaps and information loss among the different participants within the treatment process. The principal goals were to improve and accelerate healthcare processes and empower the patient to play an active and decisive role within their own care process. The project highlighted interaction between caregivers, patients and healthcare institutions based on modern information technology. Topics covered are divided into 4 sections: workflows in healthcare; how does eHealth change the care process; knowledge based IT support; and eHealth and the informed patient, and the book also includes the keynote conference speech on improving the hospital-patient relationship with digital communication. The critical importance of using mobile technology is clear to anyone in the health professions, particularly those who treat people with central nervous system (CNS) disorders. To explore current developments and opportunities for using mobile technology to advance research and treatment of CNS disorders, the National Academies'Forum on Neuroscience and Nervous System Disorders hosted a workshop in June 5-6, 2018. This book presents the proceedings of the second KES International Conference on Innovation in Medicine and Healthcare (InMed 14), held in San Sebastian, Spain, in July 2014. The young investigator with an idea has to negotiate many institutional, federal, and industrial challenges in order to get a product to market. Nowhere is described the steps in the development of new drugs, diagnos­ tics, or devices; the person with an idea has nowhere to turn for information and details. The young investigator may understand the elements of basic and clinical research, but ordinarily has no insight into novel ways of finding research funding or how to explore to find the funding opportunities that are available. The young investigator has little knowledge of the mecha­ nisms to bring an idea through the developmental phases to the market. There are other players in this complex endeavor with whom he or she has no contact, including those from industry, the Food and Drug Administration, and the legal community. Exposure to the philosophy of product develop­ ment and to procedural information would be useful to the scientific com­ munity, as would contact with those who have successfully taken an idea to a finished product. A first attempt to do this was the symposium on Idea to Product: The Process, sponsored by Serono Symposia USA and held No­ vember 17 to 20, 1994, in Washington, D.C. This book comprises the pro­ ceedings of that meeting. The editors are indebted to the many contributors to this volume, and we are especially grateful to Serono Symposia USA and to Leslie Nies and her staff for their expertise in organizing the symposium.

The objective of the workshop that is the subject of this summary report was to present the challenges and opportunities for medical devices as perceived by the key stakeholders in the field. The agenda, and hence the summaries of the presentations that were made in the workshop and which are presented in this summary report, was organized to first examine the nature of innovation in the field and the social and economic infrastructure that supports such innovation. The next objective was to identify and discuss the greatest unmet clinical needs, with a futuristic view of technologies that might meet those needs. And finally, consideration was given to the barriers to the application of new technologies to meet clinical needs.

What information and decision-making processes determine how and whether an experimental medical technology becomes accepted and used? Adopting New Medical Technology reviews the strengths and weaknesses of present coverage and adoption practices, highlights opportunities for improving both the decision-making processes and the underlying information base, and considers approaches to instituting a much-needed increase in financial support for evaluative research.
