AbstractNanotechnology offers excellent prospects for application in biology and medicine. It is used for detecting biological molecules, imaging, and as therapeutic agents. Due to nano-size (1-100 nm) and high surface-to-volume ratio, nanomaterials possess highly specific and distinct characteristics in the biological environment. Recently, the use of nanomaterials as sensors, theranostic, and drug delivery agents has become popular. The safety of these materials is being questioned because of their biological toxicity, such as inflammatory responses, cardiotoxicity, cytotoxicity, inhalation problems, etc., which can have a negative impact on the environment. This review paper focuses primarily on the toxicological effects of nanomaterials along with the mechanisms involved in cell interactions and the generation of reactive oxygen species by nanoparticles, which is the fundamental source of nanotoxicity. We also emphasize the greener synthesis of nanomaterials in biomedicine, as it is non-hazardous, feasible, and economical. Diagnostic ultrasound (US) is a major imaging modality to visualize soft tissues and blood flow with the advantages of real‐time imaging, high acceptability to patients, and absence of ionizing radiation. US imaging provides important clinical measurements, e.g., thickness of gingiva for treatment planning in orthodontics, periodontics, and implantology; or thickness of subcutaneous adipose for optimizing insulin injection. However, the image quality and measurements of anatomical structures can be inconsistent, i.e., due to varying pressure exerted by an US transducer. Herein, a simple device is developed to real‐time measure the interface pressure applied on tissues by the US transducer. A thin‐film piezo‐resistive sensor with a small footprint is integrated to sense the pressure. A theoretical model, based on hyperelastic material behavior, is verified using the pressure measured by the thin film sensor and the thickness determined on ultrasonograms. The device is also tested on porcine samples in the pressure range of 50–300 kPa for imaging gingiva boundaries, identifying tissue thickness, and probing tissue biomenchanical properties. The device enables the understanding on the optimal range of applied pressure for higher contrast imaging. The information of the on‐tissue pressure and the tissue deformation determined on the US images help to derive the biomechanical stress–strain behavior of the tissues. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

With the rapid development of artificial intelligence technology, task-based dialogue systems have become a hot research direction in the field of human-computer interaction. The pipelined approach is regarded as a classical design framework, playing a significant role in the research and application of task-based dialogue systems. The research progress in pipelined task-based dialogue systems was overviewed, with a specific emphasis on their application in the medical field. Firstly, the basic principles, evaluation metrics and commonly used datasets of each module of pipelined dialogue systems were introduced. Then, the important advances made by deep learning techniques in the research of pipelined dialogue systems in recent years were sorted out, and the advantages and disadvantages of the models used were further summarized. Subsequently, the application of pipelined dialogue systems in the medical field was specifically focused on, and the requirements and challenges of medical dialogue systems were discussed. Due to the unique thermal absorption and release capabilities, phase‐change materials (PCMs) are used in various industrial fields, such as photo‐thermal storage and building‐energy saving. In recent years, more and more research has been dedicated to applying PCMs to the medical field with substantial progress, opening new avenues for disease treatment and healthcare. The safety and reliability of PCMs may be taken into serious consider for continuous application in the medical field, while the relevant review on the related development is currently lacking. In this work, the methods for enhancing the applicability and reliability of PCMs in the medical field are systematically summarized, including microencapsulation, electrospinning technology, and porous framework encapsulation, which effectively address the issues of liquid leakage. Subsequently, the emerging advances of PCMs in medical healthcare, including medical dressings treatment, drug delivery, cold chain transport, and bio‐bone cement are summarized. By exploring and analyzing the encapsulation methods, principles as well as the emerging advances of PCMs in medical field, the challenges and perspectives promoting the applications are identified, presenting the guidelines for further development. Future communication, 5G, medical, and IoT systems need compact, green, efficient wideband sensors, and antennas. Novel linear and dual-polarized antennas for 5G, 6G, medical devices, Internet of Things (IoT) systems, and healthcare monitoring sensors are presented in this paper. One of the major goals in the evaluation of medical, 5G, and smart wireless communication devices is the development of efficient, compact, low-cost antennas and sensors. Moreover, passive and active sensors may be self-powered by connecting an energy-harvesting unit to the antenna to collect electromagnetic radiation and charge the wearable sensor battery. Wearable sensors and antennas can be employed in smart grid applications that provide communication between neighbors, localized management, bidirectional power transfer, and effective demand response. A low-cost wearable antenna may be developed by etching the printed feed and matching the network on the same substrate in the printed antenna. Active modules may be placed on the same dielectric board. The antenna design parameters and a comparison between the computation and measured electrical performance of the antennas are presented in this paper. The electrical characteristics of the new compact antennas in the vicinity of the patient's body were simulated by using electromagnetic simulation techniques. Fractal and metamaterial efficient antennas and sensors were evaluated to maximize the electrical characteristics of smart communication and medical devices. The dual- and circularly polarized antennas developed in this paper are crucial to the evaluation of wideband and multiband compact 5G, 6G, and IoT advanced systems. The new efficient sensors and antennas maximize the system's dynamic range and electrical characteristics. The new efficient wearable antennas and sensors are compact, wideband, and low-cost. The operating resonant frequency of the metamaterial antennas with circular split-ring resonators (CSRRs) may be 5% to 9% lower than the resonant frequency of the sensor without CSRRs. The directivity and gain of the metamaterial fractal antennas with CSRRs may be up to 3 dB higher than the antennas without CSRRs. The directivity and gain of the metamaterial fractal passive sensors with CSRRs may be up to 8.5 dBi. This study presents new wideband active meta-fractal antennas and sensors. The bandwidth of the new sensors is around 9% to 20%. At 2.83 GHz, the receiving active sensor gain is 13.5 dB and drops to 8 dB at 3.2 GHz. Hyaluronan (HA) is a non-sulfated glycosaminoglycan that is present in a variety of body tissues and organs. Hyaluronan has a wide range of biological activities that are frequently influenced by molar mass; however, they also depend greatly on the source, purity, and kind of impurities in hyaluronan. High-molar-mass HA has anti-inflammatory, immunosuppressive, and antiangiogenic properties, while low-molar-mass HA has opposite properties. A number of chemical modifications have been performed to enhance the stability of HA and its applications in medical practice. Hyaluronan is widely applied in medicine, such as viscosupplementation, ophthalmology, otolaryngology, wound healing, cosmetics, and drug delivery. The first issue of Ozone: Science & Engineering (OS&E)was published in early 1979 with Dr L. J. Bollyky as theEditor-in-Chief. This was a milestone for the International Ozone Association, enabling professional recognition of the advances in ozone technology. Since this first issue, 45 volumes of Ozone: Science & Engineering have been published containing 238 individual issues, 1719 technical articles and nearly 22,000 pages. Dr Rip Rice became Editor-in-Chief in 1985 and continued this position until 1998. Barry Loeb was the editor until 2024. Under the leadership of these gentlemen, OS&E expanded from about 70 pages per issue four times per year to 100 pages, then to six issues per year, at about 100 pages. In 2001, the dimensions of the journal were increased to accommodate even more manuscripts. In 1989, the Harvey M. Rosen Memorial Award was established to recognize the "best paper" published in Ozone: Science & Engineering during the two-year period between World Congresses. The selection of this award is determined by the Editorial Board of Ozone: Science & Engineering. To date, 19 papers have received this prestigious award. OS&E has followed and reported the development of ozone technologies via peer reviewed articles from ozone researchers, manufacturers and consultants. There is strong interest to improve the therapeutic potential of gold nanoparticles (GNPs) while ensuring their safe development. The utility of GNPs in medicine requires a molecular-level understanding of how GNPs interact with biological systems. Despite considerable research efforts devoted to monitoring the internalisation of GNPs, there is still insufficient understanding of the factors responsible for the variability in GNP uptake in different cell types. Data-driven models are useful for identifying the sources of this variability. Here, we trained multiple machine learning models on 2077 data points for 193 individual nanoparticles from 59 independent studies to predict cellular uptake level of GNPs and compared different algorithms for their efficacies of prediction. The five ensemble learners (Xgboost, random forest, bootstrap aggregation, gradient boosting, light gradient boosting machine) made the best predictions of GNP uptake, accounting for 80–90% of the variance in the test data. The models identified particle size, zeta potential, GNP concentration and exposure duration as the most important drivers of cellular uptake. We expect this proof-of-concept study will foster the more effective use of accumulated cellular uptake data for GNPs and minimise any methodological bias in individual studies that may lead to under- or over-estimation of cellular internalisation rates. In the literature, there are studies on medical applications using different nanofiber production methods with natural polymers. However, each system has different fiber-forming capabilities. For this reason, in this study, we investigated the production of nanofibers from a biodegradable natural polymer, gelatin, using four separate nanofiber production methods, namely electrospinning (ES), electroblowing (EB), solution blowing (SB), and centrifugal spinning (CS). Our aim was to determine the most suitable fibrous web structure for medical applications and contribute to science in this respect. It was observed that the thinnest fibers (386 nm) and the heaviest mats (15.975 g m-2) were produced by the SB method as a result of using 10 wt.% gelatin solution with a total of 10 mL. With the ES and EB methods, tighter fabric structures were obtained than with the others due to the presence of electric fields. In the CS method, more and bead-free fibers were produced due to the increase in viscosity with a 12.5 wt.% gelatin solution. Moreover, with the concentration of 12.5 wt.%, the fiber diameters of SB and CS samples increased about 2-fold. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), which has a high prevalence and mortality rate, is an irreversible condition marked by airflow restriction with different degrees of reversible damage. Notably, there is no cure for COPD, whose treatment primarily relies on rehabilitation exercises to improve airflow limitation. In this paper, a vision-based rehabilitation exercise efficacy prediction system is proposed to assess the efficacy of rehabilitation training for COPD patients. A camera was utilized to capture rehabilitation training videos of COPD patients, and we also collected various physical indicators. In addition, we used clustering algorithm to divide patients with different rehabilitation effects for subsequent progression analysis. Our model achieved a classification of rehabilitation progress accuracy of 90.6%, making it possible to effectively obtain favorable rehabilitation training results without physician supervision. Biopolymers have attracted much of interest in various applications needed for sustainable and biodegradable solutions. Indeed, biopolymers lessen the requirement for petroleum‐based resources, municipal solid waste output, and carbon dioxide emissions. Polysaccharides are a unique category of biopolymers that are especially characteristic such as biocompatibility and editability. Polysaccharides functionalization plays a significant role in various applications and their suitability for additive applications. Sensor‐based polysaccharides are widely used with many drawbacks localized in durability, moldability, and sensitivity. Otherwise, biosensors are devices monitoring a specimen's biological phenomena or measurements, usually not disposable devices. For that, biosensors are needed urgently to address the high cost of disposable supplies in the medical diagnostic industry, which span many elements of medical diagnostic applications. Additionally, manipulating of polysaccharide‐based materials is considered accessible and usable and requires low equipment requirements. Herein, the main features of polysaccharides will be discussed, along with potential applications as biosensors for medical diagnosis and new lines of inquiry with such focus on the main required to formulate polysaccharides biosensors. Human gesture detection, obstacle detection, collision avoidance, parking aids, automotive driving, medical, meteorological, industrial, agriculture, defense, space, and other relevant fields have all benefited from recent advancements in mmWave radar sensor technology. A mmWave radar has several advantages that set it apart from other types of sensors. A mmWave radar can operate in bright, dazzling, or no-light conditions. A mmWave radar has better antenna miniaturization than other traditional radars, and it has better range resolution. However, as more data sets have been made available, there has been a significant increase in the potential for incorporating radar data into different machine learning methods for various applications. This review focuses on key performance metrics in mmWave-radar-based sensing, detailed applications, and machine learning techniques used with mmWave radar for a variety of tasks. This article starts out with a discussion of the various working bands of mmWave radars, then moves on to various types of mmWave radars and their key specifications, mmWave radar data interpretation, vast applications in various domains, and, in the end, a discussion of machine learning algorithms applied with radar data for various applications. Molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) and the imprinting technique provide polymeric material with recognition elements similar to natural antibodies. The template of choice (i.e., the antigen) can be almost any type of smaller or larger molecule, protein, or even tissue. There are various formats of MIPs developed for different medical purposes, such as targeting, imaging, assay diagnostics, and biomarker detection. Biologically applied MIPs are widely used and currently developed for medical applications, and targeting the antigen with MIPs can also help in personalized medicine. The synthetic recognition sites of the MIPs can be tailor-made to function as analytics, diagnostics, and drug delivery systems. Aims: CRISPR/Cas9, a revolutionary genome editing tool derived from a bacterial system, has transformed molecular biology research, enabling precise and versatile modifications to the genome. This study surveyed 300 participants, including instructors, second-grade medical students, and patient relatives from Selcuk University Faculty of Medicine, to assess their knowledge, attitudes, and ethical perspectives on gene editing. Methods: A comprehensive survey was conducted, and the participants’ demographics were correlated with their responses. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS 22.0. Results: The survey revealed significant differences (p<0.05) in attitudes based on gender, age, and participation groups. The age group of 18-29 exhibited the highest participation rate (57.3%), while the age group of 60-65 had the lowest (1%). Approximately 50.3% of participants reported no prior knowledge of CRISPR/Cas9 although 64.3% were university graduates. Obtaining approval from ethics committees was considered crucial by 151 respondents for commencing CRISPR/Cas9 research. Interestingly, 63.3% showed eagerness for genetically modified plants and animals, while only 9% expressed interest in studies related to eternal youth. Additionally, 88% found gene editing studies conflicting with their beliefs. Conclusions: CRISPR/Cas9 holds great promise for biomedicine and healthcare but necessitates enhanced public awareness and informed decision-making. The study highlights the importance of promoting informed discussions on the ethical implications of CRISPR/Cas9 to address the concerns and perceptions of various demographics. This article presents an automatic gaze-tracker system to assist in the detection of minimal hepatic encephalopathy by analyzing eye movements with machine learning tools. To record eye movements, we used video-oculography technology and developed automatic feature-extraction software as well as a machine learning algorithm to assist clinicians in the diagnosis. In order to validate the procedure, we selected a sample ( n = 47 ) of cirrhotic patients. Approximately half of them were diagnosed with minimal hepatic encephalopathy (MHE), a common neurological impairment in patients with liver disease. By using the actual gold standard, the Psychometric Hepatic Encephalopathy Score battery, PHES, patients were classified into two groups: cirrhotic patients with MHE and those without MHE. Eye movement tests were carried out on all participants. Using classical statistical concepts, we analyzed the significance of 150 eye movement features, and the most relevant (p-values ≤ 0.05) were selected for training machine learning algorithms. To summarize, while the PHES battery is a time-consuming exploration (between 25–40 min per patient), requiring expert training and not amenable to longitudinal analysis, the automatic video oculography is a simple test that takes between 7 and 10 min per patient and has a sensitivity and a specificity of 93%. Recently, there has been remarkable progress in the development of smart textiles, especially knitted strain sensors, to achieve reliable sensor signals. Stable and reliable electro-mechanical properties of sensors are essential for using textile-based sensors in medical applications. However, the challenges associated with significant hysteresis and low gauge factor (GF) values remain for using strain sensors for motion capture. To evaluate these issues, a comprehensive investigation of the cyclic electro-mechanical properties of weft-knitted strain sensors was conducted in the present study to develop a drift-free elastic strain sensor with a robust sensor signal for motion capture for medical devices. Several variables are considered in the study, including the variation of the basic knit pattern, the incorporation of the electrically conductive yarn, and the size of the strain sensor. The effectiveness and feasibility of the developed knitted strain sensors are demonstrated through an experimental evaluation, by determining the gauge factor, its nonlinearity, hysteresis, and drift. The developed knitted piezoresistive strain sensors have a GF of 2.4, a calculated drift of 50%, 12.5% hysteresis, and 0.3% nonlinearity in parts. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Iron oxide-Fe2O3 nanoparticles-NPs and microparticles-MPs widely used in medical applications were comparatively investigated for in vitro mutagenicity and in vivo cytotoxicity/genotoxicity using the Ames test in Salmonella typhimurium strains (125, 250, 500, 750, 1,000 µg/mL) and chromosome aberration/comet assays in Allium cepa (all concentrations but 1,000 µg/mL), for the first time. Neither of the particles was mutagenic in all the bacterial strains in the media without (-S9) mix. However, with the S9 mix, a significant increase was determined in the reverting colonies in some concentrations in TA 97a. In TA 102, all the concentrations but 125 µg/mL also revealed a significant increase. These effects were regarded as weak mutagens since they were < twofold of the negative value. In the Allium test, almost all concentrations of NPs and MPs significantly decreased mitotic index (MI) compared to the negative control at all treatment times (down to 6.06% at 250 µg/mL and 6.40% at 750 µg/mL at 48 h, respectively). The frequency of aberrations significantly increased following all concentrations of NPs in all treatment periods (the highest was 62.03%). However, only a few concentrations of MPs induced significant aberrations (the highest was 32.18%). In the comet assay, while the two lowest concentrations of NPs were more effective in DNA damage, Fe2O3 MPs significantly increased DNA damage at more treatment points at both treatment periods. Both particles were also characterized morphologically and physicochemically. Antlers are the only fully regenerable mammalian appendages whose annual renewal is initiated by antler stem cells (ASCs), defined as a specialized type of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) with embryonic stem cell properties. ASCs possess the same biological features as MSCs, including the capacity for self-renewal and multidirectional differentiation, immunomodulatory functions, and the maintenance of stem cell characteristics after multiple passages. Several preclinical studies have shown that ASCs exhibit promising potential in wound healing, bone repair, osteoarthritis, anti-tissue fibrosis, anti-aging, and hair regeneration. Medical applications based on ASCs and ASC-derived molecules provide a new source of stem cells and therapeutic modalities for regenerative medicine. This review begins with a brief description of antler regeneration and the role of ASCs. Then, the properties and advantages of ASCs are described. Non-thermal plasma (NTP) application in medicine is a dynamically developing interdisciplinary field. Despite the fact that basics of the plasma phenomenon have been known since the 19th century, growing scientific attention has been paid in recent years to the use of plasma in medicine. Three most important plasma-based effects are pivotal for medical applications: (i) inactivation of a broad spectrum of microorganisms, (ii) stimulation of cell proliferation and angiogenesis with lower plasma treatment intensity, and (iii) inactivation of cells by initialization of cell death with higher plasma intensity. In this review, we explain the underlying chemical processes and reactive species involvement during NTP in human (or animal) tissues, as well as in bacteria inactivation, which leads to sterilization and indirectly supports wound healing. In addition, plasma-mediated modifications of medical surfaces, such as surgical instruments or implants, are described. This review focuses on the existing knowledge on NTP-based in vitro and in vivo studies and highlights potential opportunities for the development of novel therapeutic methods. Shape memory polymers (SMPs) are currently one of the most attractive smart materials expected to replace traditional shape memory alloys and ceramics (SMAs and SMCs, respectively) in some fields because of their unique properties of high deformability, low density, easy processing, and low cost. As one of the most popular SMPs, shape memory polyurethane (SMPU) has received extensive attention in the fields of biomedicine and smart textiles due to its biocompatibility and adjustable thermal transition temperature. However, its laborious synthesis, limitation to thermal response, poor conductivity, and low modulus limit its wider application. In this work, biocompatible poly(ε-caprolactone) diol (PCL-2OH) is used as the soft segment, isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI) is used as the hard segment, and glycerol (GL) is used as the crosslinking agent to prepare thermoset SMPU with a thermal transition temperature close to body temperature for convenient medical applications. The effects of different soft-chain molecular weights and crosslinking densities on the SMPU's properties are studied. It is determined that the SMPU has the best comprehensive performance when the molar ratio of IPDI:PCL-2OH:GL is 2:1.5:0.33, which can trigger shape memory recovery at body temperature and maintain 450% recoverable strain. The study addresses the growing need for personalized medicine and cost-effective manufacturing by investigating additive manufacturing (AM). It employs the Design of Experiments (DOE) to explore how fused filament fabrication (FFF) parameters affect porosity and mechanical properties of medical-grade polylactide (PLA) samples. Methods: Various PLA build configurations were fabricated and assessed using computed tomography (CT) scans for internal geometry and porosity. Compression tests were conducted to determine compressive strength, deformation, and Young's modulus. A comprehensive statistical analysis, utilizing three-way ANOVA, was carried out to establish the relationships between the process parameters and the obtained results. Results: The study reveals the impact of FFF process parameters (layer thickness, wall thickness, and infill density) on porosity and mechanical properties. Computed tomography analysis confirmed internal geometry and porosity, while compression tests provided insights into compressive strength, deformation, and Young's modulus. Conclusions: Optimal process parameters for desired mechanical properties and porosity in PLA models are highlighted, contributing to advanced medical applications. Antibacterial chitosan films, versatile and eco-friendly materials, have garnered significant attention in both the food industry and medicine due to their unique properties, including biodegradability, biocompatibility, and antimicrobial activity. This review delves into the various types of chitosan films and their distinct applications. In the food industry, these films have shown promise in extending shelf life and maintaining food quality. In the medical field, they have been utilized for wound dressings, drug delivery systems, and as antibacterial coatings for medical devices. The review further suggests that the incorporation of different additives can significantly enhance the antibacterial properties of chitosan films. Fibrin‐based hydrogels are used as scaffolds in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine due to their biocompatibility, low cell toxicity, autologous production, and relevance for wound healing and clot formation. The availability of fibrinogen as well as its unique mechanical behavior exhibiting nonlinear elasticity makes it suitable for the fabrication of hydrogels. However, the broad application of fibrin hydrogels in biomaterials still faces challenges in terms of gel shrinkage and degradation processes. This can be addressed through the modulation of the hydrogels'r chemical and mechanical properties. In the present work, it is demonstrated that fibrin‐based hydrogels with adjustable mechanical properties and controllable degradation profiles can be fabricated through the addition of fibrin‐binding peptides. The cyclic peptide X2CXYYGTCLX (Tn7) is used, binding to fibrin by noncovalent supramolecular interactions. These new hydrogels exhibit no toxicity and reduced degradation rate at the same time supporting cell proliferation. Tn7 peptides significantly increase the Young's Modulus and mechanical stiffness as well as fibrin fiber thickness and inter‐fiber crosslinking in hydrogels. In conclusion, hydrogels with optimized mechanical properties and controllable degradation profiles that can be advantageous for further approaches in tissue regeneration, cell‐based therapies, or clinical treatment options are produced. The discovery of low- and very low-abundance proteins in medical applications is considered a key success factor in various important domains. To reach this category of proteins, it is essential to adopt procedures consisting of the selective enrichment of species that are present at extremely low concentrations. In the past few years pathways towards this objective have been proposed. In this review, a general landscape of the enrichment technology situation is made first with the presentation and the use of combinatorial peptide libraries. Then, a description of this peculiar technology for the identification of early-stage biomarkers for well-known pathologies with concrete examples is given. In another field of medical applications, the determination of host cell protein traces potentially present in recombinant therapeutic proteins, such as antibodies, is discussed along with their potentially deleterious effects on the health of patients on the one hand, and on the stability of these biodrugs on the other hand. In this study, the electrical conductivity of low‐volume samples was measured using a prototype microfluidic chip with electrodes. We were able to show the difference of electrical conductivity in the samples of saline solution (0.9w/v% NaCl solution) with sucrose. The correlation between the electrical conductivity and the viscosity evaluated by the capillary method was shown. In medical applications, most of the patients are remotely monitored to eliminate the risk of being infected from the healthcare facilities. The process of remotely monitoring patients involves placing several body sensor networks on the patient's body to collect their health details. The collected information is transmitted via the wireless communication process that must be of a high quality. Hence, this paper investigated antenna S11 variation (AS11V) with harmonic suppression to improve the communication process in medical applications. In this research, the antenna was placed on a 2- to 4-mm thickness belt, 15 to 300 mm body thickness, and 40 to 50 dielectric constants. In addition, 3-short pin resonators were used in the harmonic suppression process aid in reducing the unnecessary harmonics in the communication process. Optimized recurrent neural networks (ORNN) were then used to process the wearable antenna–based collected devices. This in return helped in determining how effectively the gathered data helps in the medical analysis. The efficiency of the wireless antenna–based communication process was then evaluated using simulation results, and the ORNN approach showed 99.17% accuracy using the collected and validated data. The modern biotechnology industry has a demand for macromolecules that can function in extreme environments. One example is cold-adapted proteases, possessing advantages such as maintaining high catalytic efficiency at low temperature and low energy input during production and inactivation. Meanwhile, cold-adapted proteases are characterised by sustainability, environmental protection, and energy conservation; therefore, they hold significant economic and ecological value regarding resource utilisation and the global biogeochemical cycle. Recently, the development and application of cold-adapted proteases have gained gaining increasing attention; however, their applications potential has not yet been fully developed, which has seriously restricted the promotion and application of cold-adapted proteases in the industry. This article introduces the source, related enzymology characteristics, cold resistance mechanism, and the structure-function relationship of cold-adapted proteases in detail. This is in addition to discussing related biotechnologies to improve stability, emphasise application potential in clinical medical research, and the constraints of the further developing of cold-adapted proteases. We intended to obtain new appropriate materials suitable for radiation protection applications. Therefore, the choice of appropriate materials in industrial and medical applications has become one of the major research topics. An attempt has been made to conceive the possibility of using different compositions Sn-40Pb, Sn-39.5Pb-ZnO, Zn-40Pb and Zn-39.5Pb-ZnO were prepared and synthesized by the melt-spun process. This work aims to investigate the effects of rapid solidification processing and loading 0.5 wt.% ZnO NPs into the Sn- and Zn-based binary systems and the stability of the structure, mechanical and shielding properties. The structure revealed that the plain and composite alloys contain the crystalline β-Sn (body-centred tetragonal), α-Pb (cubic) Fm-3 m for the Sn-Pb system in addition to α-Pb(fcc), Zn (Hexagonal) P63/mmc and revealed ZnO (Zincite) P63mc for the Zn-Pb system. Doping ZnO nano-sized cause refines the eutectic structure as revealed in microstructural morphology. The experimentally measured density values for the plain and composite alloys have been used in evaluating the linear attenuation coefficient, which is further used to calculate mass, attenuation coefficient, mean free path, half value layer and tenth value layer. Furthermore, the variation of a mean free path, HVL and TVL with incident photon energy for the binary and composite alloys has been investigated. It was found that nano-ZnO-doped Sn-Pb and Zn-Pb enhance the amount of radiation absorbed in the material inside and as a result of which affected the radiation attenuation properties of the material. It was concluded and recommended that the composite alloys containing ZnO NPs can be used effectively as a shielding material for gamma rays with a comparable attenuation percentage compared with plain alloys. In this study, a solid-state modified pH sensor with RF magnetron sputtering technology was developed. The sensor consists of an active electrode consisting of a titanium nitride (TiN) film with a protective membrane of Nafion and a reference glass electrode of Ag/AgCl. The sensitivity of the pH sensor was investigated. Results show a sensor with excellent characteristics: sensitivity of 58.6 mV/pH for pH values from 2 to 12, very short response time of approximately 12 s in neutral pH solutions, and stability of less than 0.9 mV in 10 min duration. Further improvement in the performance of the TiN sensor was studied by application of a Nafion protective membrane. Nafion improves the sensor sensitivity close to Nernstian by maintaining a linear response. Human activity recognition (HAR) has become an interesting topic in healthcare. This application is important in various domains, such as health monitoring, supporting elders, and disease diagnosis. Considering the increasing improvements in smart devices, large amounts of data are generated in our daily lives. In this work, we propose unsupervised, scaled, Dirichlet-based hidden Markov models to analyze human activities. Our motivation is that human activities have sequential patterns and hidden Markov models (HMMs) are some of the strongest statistical models used for modeling data with continuous flow. In this paper, we assume that emission probabilities in HMM follow a bounded–scaled Dirichlet distribution, which is a proper choice in modeling proportional data. Over the past few decades, additive manufacturing (AM) has become a reliable tool for prototyping and low-volume production. In recent years, the market share of such products has increased rapidly as these manufacturing concepts allow for greater part complexity compared to conventional manufacturing technologies. Furthermore, as recyclability and biocompatibility have become more important in material selection, biopolymers have also become widely used in AM. This article provides an overview of AM with advanced biopolymers in fields from medicine to food packaging. Various AM technologies are presented, focusing on the biopolymers used, selected part fabrication strategies, and influential parameters of the technologies presented. It should be emphasized that inkjet bioprinting, stereolithography, selective laser sintering, fused deposition modeling, extrusion-based bioprinting, and scaffold-free printing are the most commonly used AM technologies for the production of parts from advanced biopolymers. Achievable part complexity will be discussed with emphasis on manufacturable features, layer thickness, production accuracy, materials applied, and part strength in correlation with key AM technologies and their parameters crucial for producing representative examples, anatomical models, specialized medical instruments, medical implants, time-dependent prosthetic features, etc. Future trends of advanced biopolymers focused on establishing target-time-dependent part properties through 4D additive manufacturing are also discussed. pH sensors are increasingly being utilized in the biomedical field and have been implicated in health applications that aim to improve the monitoring and treatment of patients. In this work, a previously developed Titanium Nitride (TiN) solid-state pH sensor is further enhanced, with the potential to be used for pH regulation inside the human body and for other biomedical, industrial, and environmental applications. One of the main limitations of existing solid-state pH sensors is their reduced performance in high redox mediums. The potential shift E0 value of the previously developed TiN pH electrode in the presence of oxidizing or reducing agents is 30 mV. To minimize this redox shift, a Nafion-modified TiN electrode was developed, tested, and evaluated in various mediums. The Nafion-modified electrode has been shown to shift the E0 value by only 2 mV, providing increased accuracy in highly redox samples while maintaining acceptable reaction times. Overcoming the redox interference for pH measurement enables several advantages of the Nafion-modified TiN electrode over the standard pH glass electrode, implicating its use in medical diagnosis, real-time health monitoring, and further development of miniaturized smart sensors. The need for non-ionizing techniques for medical imaging applications has led to the use of microwave signals. Several systems have been introduced in recent years based on increasing the number of antennas and frequency bandwidth to obtain high resolution and good accuracy in locating objects. A novel microwave imaging system that reduces the number of required antennas for precise target location appropriate for medical applications is presented. The proposed system consists of four UWB extended gap ridge horn (EGRH) antennas covering the frequency band from 0.5 GHz to 1.5 GHz mounted on a cylindrical phantom that mimics the brain in an orthogonal set of two EGRH probes. This configuration has the ability to control both the longitudinal and transversal dimensions of the reconstructed target's image, rather than controlling the spatial resolution, by increasing the frequency band that can be easily affected by medium losses. The problem of bacteria-induced infections threatens the lives of many patients. Meanwhile, the misuse of antibiotics has led to a significant increase in bacterial resistance. There are two main ways to alleviate the issue: one is to introduce antimicrobial agents to medical devices to get local drug releasing and alleviating systemic toxicity and resistance, and the other is to develop new antimicrobial methods to kill bacteria. New antimicrobial methods include cationic polymers, metal ions, hydrophobic structures to prevent bacterial adhesion, photothermal sterilization, new biocides, etc. Biodegradable biocompatible synthetic polymers have been widely used in the medical field. They are often used in tissue engineering scaffolds as well as wound dressings, where bacterial infections in these medical devices can be serious or even fatal. However, such materials usually do not have inherent antimicrobial properties. They can be used as carriers for drug delivery or compounded with other antimicrobial materials to achieve antimicrobial effects. This review focuses on the antimicrobial behavior, preparation methods, and biocompatibility testing of biodegradable biocompatible synthetic polymers. Degradable biocompatible natural polymers with antimicrobial properties are also briefly described. Finally, the medical applications of these polymeric materials are presented. To avoid dire situations, the medical sector must develop various methods for quickly and accurately identifying infections in remote regions. The primary goal of the proposed work is to create a wearable device that uses the Internet of Things (IoT) to carry out several monitoring tasks. To decrease the amount of communication loss as well as the amount of time required to wait before detection and improve detection quality, the designed wearable device is also operated with a multi-objective framework. Additionally, a design method for wearable IoT devices is established, utilizing distinct mathematical approaches to solve these objectives. As a result, the monitored parametric values are saved in a different IoT application platform. Since the proposed study focuses on a multi-objective framework, state design and deep learning (DL) optimization techniques are combined, reducing the complexity of detection in wearable technology. Wearable devices with IoT processes have even been included in current methods. However, a solution cannot be duplicated using mathematical approaches and optimization strategies. Therefore, developed wearable gadgets can be applied to real-time medical applications for fast remote monitoring of an individual. Additionally, the proposed technique is tested in real-time, and an IoT simulation tool is utilized to track the compared experimental results under five different situations. Titanium alloys have good biocompatibility and good mechanical properties, making them particularly suitable for dental and orthopedic implants. Improving their osseointegration with human bones is one of the most essential tasks. This can be achieved by developing hydroxyapatite (HA) on the treating surface using the plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) method in molten salt. In this study, a coating of titanium oxide-containing HA nanoparticles was formed on Ti-6Al-7Nb alloy by PEO in molten salt. Then, samples were subjected to hydrothermal treatment (HTT) to form HA crystals sized 0.5 to 1 μm. The effect of the current and voltage frequency for the creation of the coating on the morphology, chemical, and phase composition was studied. The anti-corrosion properties of the samples were studied using the potentiodynamic polarization test (PPT) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). An assessment of the morphology of the sample formed at a frequency of 100 Hz shows that the structure of this coating has a uniform submicron porosity, and its surface shows high hydrophilicity and anti-corrosion properties (4.90 × 106 Ohm·cm2). The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) rapidly spread to over 180 countries and abruptly disrupted production rates and supply chains worldwide. Since then, 3D printing, also recognized as additive manufacturing (AM) and known to be a novel technique that uses layer-by-layer deposition of material to produce intricate 3D geometry, has been engaged in reducing the distress caused by the outbreak. During the early stages of this pandemic, shortages of personal protective equipment (PPE), including facemasks, shields, respirators, and other medical gear, were significantly answered by remotely 3D printing them. Amidst the growing testing requirements, 3D printing emerged as a potential and fast solution as a manufacturing process to meet production needs due to its flexibility, reliability, and rapid response capabilities. In the recent past, some other medical applications that have gained prominence in the scientific community include 3D-printed ventilator splitters, device components, and patient-specific products. Regarding non-medical applications, researchers have successfully developed contact-free devices to address the sanitary crisis in public places. Human Fas ligand extracellular domain (hFasLECD) is a soluble protein agent with significant relevance to medicine because of the immunologically essential functions of parental membrane-bound Fas ligand (CD95L, CD178) in the human body. This paper aimed to overview the current status of the studies focused on hFasLECD, ranging from its fundamental molecular properties and biological activity to its potential as a novel, practical cell death-inducing therapeutics or a diseases biomarker. The main part of this review was divided into four sections, the background of biological functions of human Fas ligand, the fundamental biochemical characteristics of hFasLECD, the production of engineered hFasLECD derivatives, and the potential of hFasLECD for medical applications. The translation of hFasLECD into an established agent in medicine is in progress, based on the clinical use-oriented research works in the relevant fields of basic science and engineering. Ozone therapy is established in clinical applications since many decades, such as treatment of infections or herniated discs. However, in-line monitoring of ozone concentrations is challenging and therefore not performed by default. We developed an experimental setup to measure the in-line ozone concentration in water in real-time with a spectroscopic sensor. Thereby, the experimental setup enables the calibration and evaluation of newly evolved ozone sensors. The results for ozone concentration measurement with the spectroscopic sensor and the colorimetric photometer show a very good correlation. The computerization of many everyday tasks generates vast amounts of data, and this has lead to the development of machine-learning methods which are capable of extracting useful information from the data so that the data can be used in future decision-making processes. For a long time now, a number of fields, such as medicine (and all healthcare-related areas) and education, have been particularly interested in obtaining relevant information from this stored data. This interest has resulted in the need to deal with increasingly complex problems which involve many different variables with a high degree of interdependency. This produces models (and in our case probabilistic graphical models) that are difficult to handle and that require very efficient techniques to store and use the information that quantifies the relationships between the problem variables. It has therefore been necessary to develop efficient structures, such as probability trees or value-based potentials, to represent the information. Even so, there are problems that must be treated using approximation since this is the only way that results can be obtained, despite the corresponding loss of information. The aim of this article is to show how the approximation can be performed with value-based potentials. Our experimental work is based on checking the behavior of this approximation technique on several Bayesian networks related to medical problems, and our experiments show that in some cases there are notable savings in memory space with limited information loss. Biological approaches via biomolecular extracts of bacteria, fungi, or plants have recently been introduced as an alternative approach to synthesizing less or nontoxic nanomaterials, compared to conventional physical and chemical approaches. Among these biological methods, plant-mediated approaches (phytosynthesis) are reported to be highly beneficial for large-scale, nontoxic nanomaterial synthesis. However, plant-mediated synthesis of nanomaterials using native plant extract can lead to bioprospecting issues and deforestation challenges. On the other hand, non-native or invasive plants are non-indigenous to a particular geographic location that can grow and spread rapidly, ultimately disrupting the local and endogenous plant communities or ecosystems. Thus, controlling or eradicating these non-native plants before they damage the ecosystem is necessary. Even though mechanical, chemical, and biological approaches are available to control non-native plants, all these methods possess certain limitations, such as environmental toxicity, disturbance in the nutrient cycle, and loss of genetic integrity. Therefore, non-native plants were recently proposed as a novel sustainable source of phytochemicals for preparing nanomaterials via green chemistry, mainly metallic nanoparticles, as an alternative to native, agriculture-based, or medicinal plants. This work aims to cover a literature gap on plant-mediated bionanomaterial synthesis with an overview and bibliography analysis of non-native plants via novel data mining and advanced visualization tools. In addition, the potential of non-native plants as a sustainable, green chemistry-based alternative for bionanomaterial preparation for maintaining ecological balance, the mechanism of formation via phytochemicals, and their possible applications to promote their control and spread were also discussed. The bibliography analysis revealed that only an average of 4 articles have been published in the last 10 years (2013–2023) on non-native/invasive plants for nanomaterial synthesis, which shows the significance of this article. Conventional local drug delivery systems often encounter issues such as burst-release, limited drug reservoirs, rigidity, and low mechanical performance. We present an innovative approach to local drug delivery utilizing melt-spun drug-loaded liquid-core filaments (LiCoFs). LiCoFs were produced, incorporating fluorescein sodium salt as the model drug, dissolved in various liquid core materials, and enveloped by poly(ε-caprolactone) as the sheath material. We assessed thermal, mechanical, and structural properties of LiCoFs and have conducted extensive drug diffusion trials. Some trials involved pre-exchange of the liquid core with ibuprofen, bovine serum albumin–fluorescein isothiocyanate and methylene blue solutions using a pumping device. It was observed that diffusion mechanisms and diffusion rates depend on temperature, core size/sheath thickness, sheath permeability, carrier liquid type, drug molecule properties, and the drug's affinity to the sheath polymer. These algorithms have the back-and-forth between decoding delay, and power usage, device unpredictability resources, and error rate efficacy are all available with these methods. As a result, the goal of this paper is to develop a comprehensive method to describe both soft and burst error bits for optimal data transfer. As a result, for EG-LDPC codes, a hybrid soft bit flipping (HSBF) decoder is suggested, which decreases decoding complications while improving message data transfer. A simulation model is formed using Xilinx synthesis report to study decoding latency, hardware usage, and power usage. A HSBF decoder is used in this paper, which accepts a 64-bit coding sequence and assigns 64 Adjustable nodes to it. It checks all customizable cluster connections and quantifies adjustable node values and actions. As a consequence of the data collected, our simulation model demonstrates that the HSBF technique outperforms soft bit flipping (SBF) algorithms.
