- Abstract

- Abstract
This book highlights the presentation of methods for studying oscillations under external periodic influence and random changes in parameters in dynamic systems with nonlinearities that have discontinuities and kinks. The analysis of dynamic systems is based on effective approaches and algorithms of the method of point mappings of Poincaré surfaces, developed by the Nizhny Novgorod Scientific School of academician A.A. Andronov. Considerable attention is paid to the study of the general picture of the possible behavior of systems and their use in solving various applied problems. Using specific examples, it is found that this research approach allows not only to advance in the study of known nonlinear features but also to discover new effects and applications. The presentation is illustrated by numerous specific examples of oscillatory strongly nonlinear systems with discontinuous nonlinearities or piecewise-continuous nonlinearities. A separate chapter is devoted to the development and use of the point mapping method for random changes in the parameters of dynamic systems, as well as in dynamic systems subject to external seismic loads. The book is intended for scientists and engineers who are engaged in research and practice activities related to the theory of nonlinear oscillations and its applications, as well as graduate students and senior undergraduate students in relevant majors.

- Abstract
This book methodically details the formulations and approaches to solve boundary value problems, which are essential for determining the stress–strain states in three-layer rods and plates subjected to both single and quasi-static variable loads in thermal radiation and force fields. It duly considers the complex influences on the physically nonlinear properties of the materials in each layer. The book offers several innovative analytical solutions and a numerical parametric analysis of the stress–strain scenarios in these structures. It describes the deformation of physically nonlinear media in thermoradiational fields within the small elastic-plastic deformations theory framework. The work explores variational problem-solving methods and the elastic solution method. It presents a formula for calculating the temperature within a three-layer assembly, derived by averaging the thermophysical properties of the materials across the layers'thickness. Additionally, the book includes an analysis of the attenuation of neutron flux as it passes through a three-layer element.

- Abstract
This book describes a slamming strength assessment procedure for vessels. Typically, there are three types of slamming loads on commercial vessels: bottom slamming, bow flare slamming, and stern slamming depending upon the hull geometry at the bow and stern. Upon verifying compliance with the requirements in this book, optional notations may be assigned to the vessel. A fundamental requirement of Class is that the scantlings of the hull structure are to be in accordance with the criteria as specified by Class. The results of this book are therefore not to be used to reduce the basic scantlings obtained from the application of the Class rules. That is, if the results from this book indicate the need to increase any basic scantlings, the increased scantlings are to be implemented above the Class Rule requirements.

- Abstract
Tandem Hot Metal Rolling Mill Control is a response to the significant control engineering challenges posed by the nature and circumstances of the hot metal strip rolling process. The process is large, complex, multivariable and nonlinear with significant disturbances and subject to multiple situationally dependent time delays all of which are exacerbated by the demands of an ever-more-competitive marketing environment for its product. The book provides innovative solutions not available with previously existing methods of control. It introduces new advanced control methods, including a nonlinear control method based on an advanced state-dependent Riccati equation technique coupled with virtual rolling to improve performance during various regimes of mill operation. The book begins with a brief history of metal rolling and an overview of the tandem hot metal rolling process. It then discusses process models, including physical-system and state-space equations, and control methods currently being used in tandem rolling. The exposition of the new advanced control method uses figures and simulations to facilitate thorough understanding of the methods and their applicability in the real world. The final chapter concludes with a brief discussion of variable-speed drives as typically used in modern installations. Although sufficient mathematical treatment is provided to support the development of novel concepts, the presentation is not highly mathematical, making the text readily understandable and useful to a variety of readers in both academic and practical engineering milieux.

- Abstract
Like many sectors, agriculture is experiencing a continuous digitalization, i.e. an increase in data-driven technologies used. In contrast to companies of other critical infrastructures, a typical farm is comparatively small and often runs as a family business. Accordingly, the demands on farming technology, its implementation, and regulations are different in many terms. Currently, a promising technological trend of agriculture is smart farming, that incorporates more precise cultivation with less manual effort. But such new developments usually lack an assessment about its impact on the sector's resilience and dependencies on other infrastructures. It remains unclear, how digitalization impacts the resilience of food production and food safety. Therefore, it is not well researched which technological developments may lead to undesired effects in the future. How modern systems should be designed to allow for both, positive impacts on efficiency, and prevention of negative effects interms of reduced resilience capacities, is also not answered by current literature. The aim of the work is to close this research gap in the interplay between agriculture, digitalization, and resilience.

- Abstract
This book comprehensively describes the tip streaming in simple fluids and those containing surfactants and polymeric molecules. It summarizes the theoretical models and approximations commonly adopted to analyze this phenomenon. It provides relevant experimental results and presents the scaling laws for rationalizing those results. The stability of the flows leading to tip streaming is analyzed theoretically and experimentally. Attention is paid to the effects of surfactant monolayers and viscoelasticity, including solutocapillarity, interfacial elasticity, surface viscosity, and extensional thickening caused by the polymer coil-stretch transition. It also offers an overall perspective of the numerous technological applications of the tip-streaming phenomenon. Remarkable examples are the production of microemulsions and microencapsulation of active agents for the food and pharmacy industries, the atomization of charged liquids for analytical chemistry, and the ejection of ultra-fast and ultra-thin jets for crystallography. Physical mechanisms responsible for the onset of tip streaming driven by hydrodynamic and electrohydrodynamic forces are described. Relevant theoretical and experimental results of the periodic microdripping and continuous microjetting modes of tip streaming produced with microfluidic configurations such as electrospray, flow focusing, coflowing, and selective withdrawal are discussed. The physical mechanisms responsible for the instability of the microjetting mode are studied in detail. The book collects the scaling laws used to predict the outcome of the microfluidic configurations mentioned above. The author combines state-of-the-art experimental results and linear stability analysis to identify the instability mechanisms limiting the applicability of the above-mentioned microfluidic configurations. In this way, the book connects experimental observations with fundamental aspects of tip streaming, bridging the microfluidic and fluid dynamicist communities. The connection between results obtained from the theoretical and experimental approaches will help experimentalists to understand the fundamental aspects of their practical problems. A useful guide for researchers working on hydrodynamic focusing and electrospray.

- Abstract
The book focuses primarily on experimental and analytical methods developed over many years to characterize the deformation and fracture of brittle materials under dynamic loading conditions. The dynamic response of brittle materials is highly nonlinear and complex, with practical applications ranging from explosive excavation of rocks to the design of ceramic armor and the protection of spacecraft windows from meteor impacts. It provides a comprehensive exploration of the challenges and methodologies involved in impact experiments and computational modeling of brittle solids under shock and impact loading, making it essential reading for those seeking realistic solutions to blast and ballistic problems. For example, the book emphasizes the significance of validating numerical code solutions through simulations. This involves understanding and evaluating the impact of various factors such as appropriate boundary conditions, high-resolution finite element meshes, solution time steps, contact algorithms, interface modeling, artificial viscosity, erosion of elements, particle conversion, and model parameters on the accuracy of solutions. It selectively presents examples of modeling and simulations of ballistic problems drawn from the open literature. While numerous articles on the book's topic exist in the literature, this volume integrates key aspects of high strain rate impact experiments, modeling, and simulations of brittle failure in ceramics, rocks, oil shale, and cementitious materials across various stress and strain states. To the best of the authors'knowledge, no other compilation covers such a wide array of experimental techniques used in this field, particularly for ceramics, yet adaptable for other heterogeneous brittle solids. Despite the extensive literature on this subject, most impact experimental configurations have been limited to specific geometries and have not encompassed the broad range of techniques necessary to characterize and validate constitutive behaviors used in modern numerical codes. Many researchers and engineers are often unaware of the specialized experiments and models presented in international conference proceedings or technical presentations. This book addresses that gap by encompassing a broader range of unique impact experiments, constitutive and damage modeling, and computational simulations not found in any existing publication.

- Abstract
This book presents, in a variational form, very many two dimensional models which have been developed to overcome some weaknesses of the Kirchhoff-Love and Reissner-Mindlin's models. More precisely the N-T and N models are particularly treated because they clearly show the impact of the change in the third fundamental form whose contribution to the strain energy becomes important when the characteristic ratio of the shell is roughly greater than 0.3. Transverse stresses through-the-thickness are calculated. Gradient Recovery and Strain deformation approach with Curve triangular and Shifted Lagrange elements are implemented. These new FEM appear to be memory less greedy.

- Abstract
Working and living onboard vessels imposes a series of generally low-frequency mechanical vibrations as well as single-impulse shock loads on the human body. Also, exposure to noise is characteristic aboard vessels. Low-frequency vibrations are created by vessel motions, which are produced by the various sea states in conjunction with vessel speed and point of sail. These motions can result in motion sickness, body instability, interruptions of task performance, sleep interruption and fatigue, increased health risk aggravated by shock loads due to slam and reduced human efficiency. Higher-frequency vibration influences comfort and is often associated with rotating machinery. The imposition of higher frequency vibrations (about 1 to 80 Hz) induces corresponding motions and forces within the human body creating discomfort and reduced human efficiency. With regard to noise, the above can similarly affect exposed humans, notably with sleep interruption and resulting fatigue, discomfort, and reduced efficiency. Also of concern are transient and permanent hearing loss, masking of audible signals, and interruption of speech communication. The concerns related to levels and characteristics of noise and vibration are covered in this and the other titles in the series related to ship vibration and noise control. be granted any of the associated habitability notations, specific noise and vibration criteria must be met. Ship designers in pursuit of these notations often request guidance on how to control levels of noise and vibration in inhabited spaces. As a result, this book has been written. The information presented in this book is intended for guidance only to support vessel designers and operators in controlling vessel noise and vibration in the general case, and more specifically in meeting the requirements of classification society habitability rules.
