Abstract: Mechanisms behind the phenomenon of Arctic amplification are widely discussed. To contribute to this debate, the (AC)3 project was established in 2016 (www.ac3-tr.de/). It comprises modeling and data analysis efforts as well as observational elements. The project has assembled a wealth of ground-based, airborne, shipborne, and satellite data of physical, chemical, and meteorological properties of the Arctic atmosphere, cryosphere, and upper ocean that are available for the Arctic climate research community. Short-term changes and indications of long-term trends in Arctic climate parameters have been detected using existing and new data. For example, a distinct atmospheric moistening, an increase of regional storm activities, an amplified winter warming in the Svalbard and North Pole regions, and a decrease of sea ice thickness in the Fram Strait and of snow depth on sea ice have been identified. A positive trend of tropospheric bromine monoxide (BrO) column densities during polar spring was verified. Local marine/biogenic sources for cloud condensation nuclei and ice nucleating particles were found. Atmospheric–ocean and radiative transfer models were advanced by applying new parameterizations of surface albedo, cloud droplet activation, convective plumes and related processes over leads, and turbulent transfer coefficients for stable surface layers. Four modes of the surface radiative energy budget were explored and reproduced by simulations. To advance the future synthesis of the results, cross-cutting activities are being developed aiming to answer key questions in four focus areas: lapse rate feedback, surface processes, Arctic mixed-phase clouds, and airmass transport and transformation.

4. Airborne remote sensing observations of Arctic low-level clouds and precipitation during cold air outbreaks

Abstract: In cold air outbreaks (CAOs), cold and dry air flows from the central Arctic southward often leading to extreme weather at mid-latitudes. Roll convection in the boundary layer is triggered within the marginal sea ice zone. During the air-mass transformation, this roll convection leads to cloud formation within several 100 km away from the sea ice edge. Mixed-phase processes and extreme surface heat fluxes play an important role in the transformation. Understanding air-mass transformation is very important for weather and climate modelling. However, only few observations of cloud macro- and microphysical characteristics during CAOs along their trajectory exist yet.Our study investigates cloud rolls over the open ocean and sea ice west of Spitsbergen using airborne remote sensing measurements obtained by the Microwave Radar/radiometerfor Arctic Clouds (MiRAC) and Airborne Mobile Aerosol Lidar for Arctic research (AMALi). We focus on two CAO events that took place during the HALO–(AC)3 campaign conducted in March/April 2021. The POLAR 5 aircraft flew several legs along the same track perpendicular to the cloud streets crossing the sea ice edge. This allows an investigation of the air masses with time and distance to sea ice edge. Hence, our analysis resolves the development of the roll convection. Dropsondes serve information of the thermodynamic state of the atmosphere, whereas remote sensing observations allow for a geometrical and microphysical analysis of clouds. In-situ measurements from the POLAR 6 aircraft, which flew collocated with P5 but inside the clouds, resolve aerosol number concentrations and droplet size distributions., The 28th IUGG General Assembly (IUGG2023) (Berlin 2023)

Abstract: The science guiding the EUREC4A campaign and its measurements is presented. EUREC4A comprised roughly 5 weeks of measurements in the downstream winter trades of the North Atlantic - eastward and southeastward of Barbados. Through its ability to characterize processes operating across a wide range of scales, EUREC4A marked a turning point in our ability to observationally study factors influencing clouds in the trades, how they will respond to warming, and their link to other components of the earth system, such as upper-ocean processes or the life cycle of particulate matter. This characterization was made possible by thousands (2500) of sondes distributed to measure circulations on meso- (200 km) and larger (500 km) scales, roughly 400 h of flight time by four heavily instrumented research aircraft; four global-class research vessels; an advanced ground-based cloud observatory; scores of autonomous observing platforms operating in the upper ocean (nearly 10 000 profiles), lower atmosphere (continuous profiling), and along the air-sea interface; a network of water stable isotopologue measurements; targeted tasking of satellite remote sensing; and modeling with a new generation of weather and climate models. In addition to providing an outline of the novel measurements and their composition into a unified and coordinated campaign, the six distinct scientific facets that EUREC4A explored - from North Brazil Current rings to turbulence-induced clustering of cloud droplets and its influence on warm-rain formation - are presented along with an overview of EUREC4A's outreach activities, environmental impact, and guidelines for scientific practice. Abstract: With the Arctic rapidly changing, the needs to observe, understand, and model the changes are essential. To support these needs, an annual cycle of observations of atmospheric properties, processes, and interactions were made while drifting with the sea ice across the central Arctic during the Multidisciplinary drifting Observatory for the Study of Arctic Climate (MOSAiC) expedition from October 2019 to September 2020. An international team designed and implemented the comprehensive program to document and characterize all aspects of the Arctic atmospheric system in unprecedented detail, using a variety of approaches, and across multiple scales. These measurements were coordinated with other observational teams to explore crosscutting and coupled interactions with the Arctic Ocean, sea ice, and ecosystem through a variety of physical and biogeochemical processes. This overview outlines the breadth and complexity of the atmospheric research program, which was organized into 4 subgroups: atmospheric state, clouds and precipitation, gases and aerosols, and energy budgets. Atmospheric variability over the annual cycle revealed important influences from a persistent large-scale winter circulation pattern, leading to some storms with pressure and winds that were outside the interquartile range of past conditions suggested by long-term reanalysis. Similarly, the MOSAiC location was warmer and wetter in summer than the reanalysis climatology, in part due to its close proximity to the sea ice edge. The comprehensiveness of the observational program for characterizing and analyzing atmospheric phenomena is demonstrated via a winter case study examining air mass transitions and a summer case study examining vertical atmospheric evolution. Overall, the MOSAiC atmospheric program successfully met its objectives and was the most comprehensive atmospheric measurement program to date conducted over the Arctic sea ice. 10. Small-scale structure of thermodynamic phase in Arctic mixed-phase clouds observed by airborne remote sensing during a cold air outbreak and a warm air advection event

Abstract: The synergy between airborne lidar, radar, passive microwave, and passive imaging spectrometer measurements was used to characterize the vertical and small-scale (down to 10 m) horizontal distribution of the cloud thermodynamic phase. Two case studies of low-level Arctic clouds in a cold air outbreak and a warm air advection observed during the Arctic CLoud Observations Using airborne measurements during polar Day (ACLOUD) were investigated. Both clouds exhibited the typical vertical mixed-phase structure with mostly liquid water droplets at cloud top and ice crystals in lower layers. The cloud top horizontal small-scale variability observed during the cold air outbreak is dominated by the liquid water close to the cloud top and shows no indication of ice in lower cloud layers. Contrastingly, the cloud top variability of the case observed during a warm air advection showed some ice in areas of low reflectivity or cloud holes. Radiative transfer simulations considering homogeneous mixtures of liquid water droplets and ice crystals were able to reproduce the horizontal variability of this warm air advection. To account for more realistic vertical distributions of the thermodynamic phase, large eddy simulations (LES) were performed to reconstruct the observed cloud properties and were used as input for radiative transfer simulations. The simulations of the cloud observed during the cold air outbreak, with mostly liquid water at cloud top, realistically reproduced the observations. For the warm air advection case, the simulated cloud field underestimated the ice water content (IWC). Nevertheless, it revealed the presence of ice particles close to the cloud top and confirmed the observed horizontal variability of the cloud field. It is concluded that the cloud top small-scale horizontal variability reacts to changes in the vertical distribution of the cloud thermodynamic phase. Abstract: This paper presents a method for constructing intrusion detection systems based on efficient fuzzy rulebased classifiers. The design process of a fuzzy rule-based classifier from a given input-output data set can be presented as a feature selection and parameter optimization problem. For parameter optimization of fuzzy classifiers, the differential evolution is used, while the binary harmonic search algorithm is used for selection of relevant features. The performance of the designed classifiers is evaluated using the KDD Cup 1999 intrusion detection dataset. The optimal classifier is selected based on the Akaike information criterion. The optimal intrusion detection system has a 1.21% type I error and a 0.39% type II error. A comparative study with other methods was accomplished. The results obtained showed the adequacy of the proposed method.

Abstract: Tho-tho cattle is short to medium stature black color animal available in different hilly pockets of Nagaland. Body is mostly covered with short and glossy hairs. Coat color is either pure black or skew bald, neck is long and fine, horns are curved with tips pointed upward. Udder is small and hump is prominent in this animal. Tho-tho cattle play an important role in the socio-cultural life of the local tribal people and are considered as the ceremonial animal of various social rituals. The diploid chromosome number in Tho-tho cattle was observed to be 60 in all complete metaphase spreads. The normal karyotype of Tho-tho cattle showed that all the autosomes are acrocentric whereas among the sex chromosome X was found to be sub-metacentric and Y as smallest acrocentric. The relative length of the autosomal chromosomes varied from 5.24% of chromosome number 1 to 1.88% of chromosome number 29 and the relative length of the X and Y chromosomes were 4.91 and 1.79%, respectively. The average centromeric index in Tho-tho cattle was about 36.18% and the arm ratio was 1.78. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: The article discusses the global numerical weather prediction model GME using CloudSat with respect to frozen particles, both ice and snow. It compares the observation-to-model and the model-to-observation approach for further evaluation of the global numerical weather prediction model. In addition, the comparison reveals that the prognostic scheme reproduces the shape of the CloudSat frequency distributions for both ice water content (IWC) and reflectivity factor well.

Abstract: The science guiding the EUREC4A campaign and its measurements is presented. EUREC4A comprised roughly 5 weeks of measurements in the downstream winter trades of the North Atlantic – eastward and southeastward of Barbados. Through its ability to characterize processes operating across a wide range of scales, EUREC4A marked a turning point in our ability to observationally study factors influencing clouds in the trades, how they will respond to warming, and their link to other components of the earth system, such as upper-ocean processes or the life cycle of particulate matter. This characterization was made possible by thousands (2500) of sondes distributed to measure circulations on meso- (200 km) and larger (500 km) scales, roughly 400 h of flight time by four heavily instrumented research aircraft; four global-class research vessels; an advanced ground-based cloud observatory; scores of autonomous observing platforms operating in the upper ocean (nearly 10 000 profiles), lower atmosphere (continuous profiling), and along the air–sea interface; a network of water stable isotopologue measurements; targeted tasking of satellite remote sensing; and modeling with a new generation of weather and climate models. In addition to providing an outline of the novel measurements and their composition into a unified and coordinated campaign, the six distinct scientific facets that EUREC4A explored – from North Brazil Current rings to turbulence-induced clustering of cloud droplets and its influence on warm-rain formation – are presented along with an overview of EUREC4A's outreach activities, environmental impact, and guidelines for scientific practice. 33. Geographic variability of Medicaid acceptance among allergists in the US.

Abstract: Objective: To determine the geographic variability of Medicaid acceptance among allergists in the US., Study Design: Geospatial analysis predicted Medicaid acceptance across space, and a multivariable regression identified area-level population demographic variables associated with acceptance., Methods: We used the National Plan & Provider Enumeration System database to identify allergists. Medicaid acceptance was determined from lists or search engines from state Medicaid offices and calls to provider offices. Spatial analysis was performed using the empirical Bayesian kriging tool. Multivariate logistic regression was used to identify county-level characteristics associated with provider Medicaid acceptance., Results: Of 5694 allergists, 55.5% accepted Medicaid. Acceptance in each state ranged from 13% to 90%. Washington, Arizona, and the Northeast had lowest predicted proportion of both Medicaid acceptance and Medicaid acceptance per 10,000 enrollees. Overall, county-level characteristics were not associated with the likelihood of accepting Medicaid in multivariate analyses. Only the percentage of individuals living in poverty was associated with a higher likelihood of providers accepting Medicaid (OR, 1.245; 95% CI, 1.156-1.340; P < .001)., Conclusions: A barrier to accessing allergy-related health care is finding a provider who accepts a patient's insurance, which is largely variable by state. Lack of access to allergy care likely affects health outcomes for children with prevalent atopic conditions such as food allergy.

Abstract: Two airborne field campaigns focusing on observations of Arctic mixed-phase clouds and boundary layer processes and their role with respect to Arctic amplification have been carried out in spring 2019 and late summer 2020 over the Fram Strait northwest of Svalbard. The latter campaign was closely connected to the Multidisciplinary drifting Observatory for the Study of Arctic Climate (MOSAiC) expedition. Comprehensive datasets of the cloudy Arctic atmosphere have been collected by operating remote sensing instruments, in-situ probes, instruments for the measurement of turbulent fluxes of energy and momentum, and dropsondes on board the AWI research aircraft Polar 5. In total, 24 flights with 111 flight hours have been performed over open ocean, the marginal sea ice zone, and sea ice. The datasets follow documented methods and quality assurance and are suited for studies on Arctic mixed-phase clouds and their transformation processes, for studies with a focus on Arctic boundary layer processes, and for satellite validation applications. 38. Ovarian follicular dynamics, hormonal profiles and ovulation time in Mithun cows (Bos frontalis).

Abstract: The study aimed to evaluate follicular dynamics and concentrations of estradiol-17β (E2), progesterone (P4), follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH) during the oestrous cycle and to determine ovulation time in Mithun cows. Ovaries of experimental cows (n = 7) were examined daily by transrectal-ultrasonography for three consecutive oestrous cycles (n = 21). The characteristics of follicular waves, dominant follicle, largest subordinate follicle and corpus luteum and ovulation time were evaluated. The plasma samples were analysed throughout the interovulatory interval to determine the differences in the hormonal profiles (E2, P4, FSH and LH) between different follicular wave cycles. Out of eighteen oestrous cycles analysed, three-wave follicular cycles were maximum (n = 12: 66.66%) followed by two (n = 4: 22.22%) and four waves (n = 2: 11.11%). The two and three waves were statistically compared, and no significant (p > .05) differences were observed in day of wave emergence, number of follicles (≥3 mm) recruited, maximum diameter of the ovulatory dominant follicle, growth rates of ovulatory and anovulatory dominant follicles and maximum diameter of corpus luteum. The diameter of dominant follicles was significantly (p < .05) greater than subordinate follicles in both ovulatory and anovulatory waves. No significant differences were observed in peak concentrations of estradiol-17β and follicle stimulating hormone between ovulatory and anovulatory waves in all wave cycles. A preovulatory luteinizing hormone surge was observed a day before ovulation in all wave cycles. Progesterone concentrations were lower than 0.5 ng/ml during oestrus and increased sharply to the maximum levels of ≥3.8 ng/ml in all wave cycles. Ovulation time (mean ± SEM), irrespective of follicular waves was 10.5 ± 0.64 h after the end of oestrus. It was concluded that Mithun cows have a preponderance of three follicular waves with little difference between the two- and three-follicular waves and ovulation occurred 10.5 h after the end of oestrus., (© 2022 Wiley-VCH GmbH.)

Abstract: The study aimed to describe a comparative ejaculatory response, fresh and frozen-thawed semen quality and fertility of semen collected by artificial vagina and electroejaculation in mithun. Experimental bulls were divided into two groups, G-I: young bulls (n = 4; 4-5 years of age) and G-II: older bulls (n = 4; 8-10 years of age). Sixteen ejaculates were collected from each group G-I (AV 1 ) and G-II (AV 2 ) by artificial vagina method (control). Thirty-six ejaculates were collected from the same bulls from each group G-I (EE 1 ) and G-II (EE 2 ) by electroejaculation method (treatment). The study did not reveal any significant (p > 0.05) difference in the ejaculatory responses between EE 1 and EE 2 . Mann-Whitney U test indicated that salivation discomfort sign score was significantly (p < 0.05) higher in EE 1 . Fresh and frozen-thawed semen quality parameters, and motility and velocity profiles recorded by computer-assisted sperm analyser were significantly (p < 0.05) lower in electroejaculation than the artificial vagina. The conception rates (AV 1 vs EE 1 & AV 2 vs EE 2 ) at day 35-45 post insemination were nonsignificantly higher (p > 0.05) in the artificial vagina group. It concluded that, although artificial vagina method has better semen quality, nevertheless, electroejaculation has the potential for semen collection from free-range mithun bulls to incorporate in assisted reproductive technology procedures., (© 2021 Wiley-VCH GmbH.)

40. Access to Allergen-Free Food Among Black and White Children with Food Allergy in the FORWARD Study.

Abstract: Background: Racial differences in access to allergen-free food have not been fully described among children with food allergy (FA)., Objective: To examine access to allergen-free foods among Black and White children with FA., Methods: Black and White children with FA were enrolled in Food Allergy Outcomes Related to White and African American Racial Differences (FORWARD), a multisite prospective cohort study at 4 urban US centers. Caregivers completed questionnaires regarding access to allergen-free foods. Univariable statistics described demographics. Bivariable statistics evaluated crude associations with access to allergen-free foods. Multivariable logistic regression evaluated the adjusted effect of race on access to allergen-free foods. Geospatial analyses examined the distribution of race, socioeconomic status, and food desert residence., Results: Among participants (n = 336), White caregivers (88.1%) were more likely to report access to allergen-free foods than Black caregivers (59%) (P < .001). White caregivers were more likely to purchase allergen-free foods online (35.2%) than Black caregivers (12%) (P < .001). Although Black children were more likely to live in a food desert, access to allergen-free food was not related to food desert residence. In the unadjusted analysis, White children were 5.2 times as likely to have access than Black children (P < .001); after adjusting for demographics, this increase in access was no longer significant (P = .08). Other predictors of access to allergen-free foods included online food purchasing, annual household income, respondent education level, milk allergy, and child age >5 years., Conclusion: In the FORWARD cohort, Black children have less access to allergen-free foods than White children, but much of the difference is accounted for by socioeconomic status and other participant characteristics., (Copyright © 2021 American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology. Abstract: A massive bovine, Bos frontalis, also known as Mithun or Gayal, found at higher altitude is very promising meat and milk animal. For candidate gene and marker discovery, RNA-seq data was generated from longissimus dorsi muscle tissues with Illumina-HiSeq. Such markers can be used in future for genetic gain of traits like feed conversion efficiency (FCE) and average daily gain (ADG). Analysis revealed 297differentially expressed genes (DEGs) having 173 up and 124 down-regulated unigenes. Extensive conservation was found in genic region while comparing with Bos taurus. Analysis revealed 57 pathways having 112 enzymes, 72 transcriptional factors and cofactors, 212 miRNAs regulating 71 DEGs, 25,855 SSRs, mithun-specific 104,822 variants and 7288 indels, gene regulatory network (GRN) having 24 hub-genes and transcriptional factors regulating cell proliferation, immune tolerance and myogenesis. This is first report of muscle transcriptome depicting candidate genes with GRN controlling FCE and ADG. 42. Whole genome sequence and de novo assembly revealed genomic architecture of Indian Mithun (Bos frontalis).

Abstract: Background: Mithun (Bos frontalis), also called gayal, is an endangered bovine species, under the tribe bovini with 2n = 58 XX chromosome complements and reared under the tropical rain forests region of India, China, Myanmar, Bhutan and Bangladesh. However, the origin of this species is still disputed and information on its genomic architecture is scanty so far. We trust that availability of its whole genome sequence data and assembly will greatly solve this problem and help to generate many information including phylogenetic status of mithun. Recently, the first genome assembly of gayal, mithun of Chinese origin, was published. However, an improved reference genome assembly would still benefit in understanding genetic variation in mithun populations reared under diverse geographical locations and for building a superior consensus assembly. We, therefore, performed deep sequencing of the genome of an adult female mithun from India, assembled and annotated its genome and performed extensive bioinformatic analyses to produce a superior de novo genome assembly of mithun., Results: We generated ≈300 Gigabyte (Gb) raw reads from whole-genome deep sequencing platforms and assembled the sequence data using a hybrid assembly strategy to create a high quality de novo assembly of mithun with 96% recovered as per BUSCO analysis. The final genome assembly has a total length of 3.0 Gb, contains 5,015 scaffolds with an N50 value of 1 Mb. Repeat sequences constitute around 43.66% of the assembly. The genomic alignments between mithun to cattle showed that their genomes, as expected, are highly conserved. Gene annotation identified 28,044 protein-coding genes presented in mithun genome. The gene orthologous groups of mithun showed a high degree of similarity in comparison with other species, while fewer mithun specific coding sequences were found compared to those in cattle., Conclusion: Here we presented the first de novo draft genome assembly of Indian mithun having better coverage, less fragmented, better annotated, and constitutes a reasonably complete assembly compared to the previously published gayal genome. This comprehensive assembly unravelled the genomic architecture of mithun to a great extent and will provide a reference genome assembly to research community to elucidate the evolutionary history of mithun across its distinct geographical locations.

43. Newborn foal with atypical myopathy.

Abstract: The case of atypical myopathy (AM) in newborn Haflinger foal with clinical signs of depression and weakness appearing 6 hours after birth resulting in recumbency 12 hours after birth is described. The foal's dam was diagnosed with AM in the 6th month of gestation based on clinical signs of a myopathy, elevated serum activity of creatine kinase, metabolomic analysis and the presence of methylenecyclopropyl acetyl carnitine (MCPA-carnitine) in the blood. At the time of delivery, the mare was grazing on a pasture near sycamore trees but was free of clinical signs of AM. Metabolomic analysis of the foal's blood revealed increased concentrations of acylcarnitines and MCPA-carnitine consistent with metabolic profiles of blood from AM affected horses. Two theories could explain this observation (a) hypoglycin A or its metabolites accumulated in the mare's placenta with consequent transfer to fetus or (b) these compounds were secreted into mare's milk., (© 2018 The Authors. 44. High-density Genotyping reveals Genomic Characterization, Population Structure and Genetic Diversity of Indian Mithun (Bos frontalis).

Abstract: The current study aimed at genomic characterization and improved understanding of genetic diversity of two Indian mithun populations (both farm, 48 animals and field, 24 animals) using genome wide genotype data generated with Illumina BovineHD BeadChip. Eight additional populations of taurine cattle (Holstein and NDama), indicine cattle (Gir) and other evolutionarily closely related species (Bali cattle, Yak, Bison, Gaur and wild buffalo) were also included in this analysis (N = 137) for comparative purposes. Our results show that the genetic background of mithun populations was uniform with few possible signs of indicine admixture. In general, observed and expected heterozygosities were quite similar in these two populations. We also observed increased frequencies of small-sized runs of homozygosity (ROH) in the farm population compared to field mithuns. On the other hand, longer ROH were more frequent in field mithuns, which suggests recent founder effects and subsequent genetic drift due to close breeding in farmer herds. This represents the first study providing genetic evidence about the population structure and genomic diversity of Indian mithun. The information generated will be utilized for devising suitable breeding and conservation programme for mithun, an endangered bovine species in India.
