Abstract

In order to determine the junction temperature of semiconductor devices operating at different power supply and cooling conditions, their thermal parameters are needed. This article describes an original measurement set-up enabling the determination of thermal parameters of power semiconductor devices. In contrast to other set-ups described in the literature, this set-up makes it possible to measure thermal parameters which characterize the efficiency of the removal generated due to a self-heating phenomenon, as well as the parameters characterizing mutual thermal couplings. The presented set-up makes use of an indirect electrical method to determine the junction temperature of diodes, bipolar and unipolar transistors and IGBTs. The methods used to measure the self and transfer transient thermal impedances of these devices and the construction of the set-up are described. The influence of selected factors on the accuracy of the measurements is analyzed. Examples of the measurement results of thermal parameters (self and transfer transient thermal impedances) of power semiconductor devices operating at different cooling conditions are presented. Abstract

A developed method and measurement setup for measurement of noise generated in a supercapacitor is presented. The requirements for noise data recording are considered and correlated with working modes of supercapacitors. An example of results of low-frequency noise measurements in commercially available supercapacitors are presented. The ability of flicker noise measurements suggests that they can be used to assess quality of tested supercapacitors.

8. Steady state and small signal modeling of resonant converters - practical validation.

Abstract

Discrete modeling is a fast and accurate method for describing resonant switch mode power converters. This paper applies discrete modeling onto resonant converters. It shows how to calculate the steady state, and shows as well the small signal control-to-output transfer function as the most important transfer function. Furthermore, the practical relevance of this model is investigated by comparing the calculated results with measurements, and an excellent agreement between theory and practice shows the accuracy of this modeling technique. 9. Measurement set-up to characterize the current dependent inductivity of nonlinear inductances.

Abstract

Magnetics are important key components in the field of power electronics. The use of nonlinear effects of inductors and transformers gives a great opportunity of improving the performance of switch mode power supplies. For an optimal design the material parameters have to be known. However, required information is hardly given in data sheets. Therefore, additional characterization measurements are necessary. This paper presents a measurement set-up to determine the current dependent inductivity of inductors. Two different definitions for the nonlinear inductance are introduced and used for the calculation of the current dependent behavior of nonlinear inductors. The data from one single measurement is sufficient in order to get the current dependent inductivity for the whole dynamic range. Different measurement set-ups are introduced and discussed with all their advantages and disadvantages. 10. A permeation–diffusion–reaction model of gas transport in cellular tissue of plant materials.

Abstract

Gas transport in fruit tissue is governed by both diffusion and permeation. The latter phenomenon is caused by overall pressure gradients which may develop due to the large difference in O2 and CO2 diffusivity during controlled atmosphere storage of the fruit. A measurement set-up for tissue permeation based on unsteady-state gas exchange was developed. The gas permeability of pear tissue was determined based on an analytical gas transport model. The overall gas transport in pear tissue samples was validated using a finite element model describing simultaneous O2, CO2, and N2 gas transport, taking into account O2 consumption and CO2 production due to respiration. The results showed that the model described the experimentally determined permeability of N2 very well. The average experimentally determined values for permeation of skin, cortex samples, and the vascular bundle samples were (2.17±1.71)×10−19 m2, (2.35±1.96)×10−19 m2, and (4.51±3.12)×10−17 m2, respectively. 11. Design and fabrication of a measurement interface for smart IoT sensors: Signal generation and hardware control

Abstract

This project is to design and implement a reconfigurable measurement interface for Internet of Things sensors, for the Microelectronics Department of the Delft University of Technology. This thesis will discuss the functionality and design process taken in designing such a reconfigurable measurement interface, focusing on generating signals and control control signals for the hard- ware. The important choices will be highlighted and the strengths and weaknesses of each design choice will be weighed in order to produce a fully functional measurement interface. In the span of 10 weeks this group was able to successfully generate sinusoidal, square, and triangular waves as well as DC voltages at +12V and +24V and in the voltage range of -10V to +10V on different pins of the dip-48 socket. Abstract

Time synchronization protocols assume a primary role in IoT era. Their design, implementation and test often follow separate paths and they are not ensured with the same level of accuracy. Simulation validation exhibits unpredictable gap with real performance levels. According to these statements and in order to answer to the proposed open issues, the paper present a fine-grained controlled environment to perform custom validation test of time synchronization algorithms. The set-up is built by adopting widely known Raspberry development boards, exploiting the ad-hoc fiber optic links provided by Unicas-Net, taking advantage of NetEm built-in emulator in Raspbian Operating Systems, and finally developing a tailored user-friendly software to adequately control network link quality. Accordingly, synchronizing nodes can connect to one of the open points (provided by Raspberry devices) of the network ring and run their algorithms with other nodes that access to the set-up at 50 km distance. Finally, time synchronization performance can easily be assessed by exploiting GPS time provided by the GPS receiver and antenna, which complete each board equipment. First functionality tests are also reported in the paper.

13. Designing a test set-up to measure electrosurgical parameters: In Search of Design Requirements for an Electrosurgical Unit for Low-and-Middle Income Countries

Abstract

Safe surgical and anesthetic care is not available to 5 billion people worldwide. Many problems that are encountered when providing surgical care are related to surgical equipment. A lot of surgical equipment is designed for the use in High-Income Countries (HICs) and not specifically for Low-and-Middle Income countries (LMICs). One appliance, used in every operation room worldwide, is an electrosurgical unit (ESU). Electrosurgery is the use of a high-frequency (HF) alternating current (AC) to raise tissue temperature, making it possible to cut and coagulate this tissue. There is a large variety of ESUs available to HICs, but these do not meet the requirements for safe and proper use in LMICs. The Biomedical Engineering department at the TU Delft is currently working on a project to create an ESU for LMICs. This thesis aims to compose a list of requirements for this ESU, design a protocol and test set-up to measure electrosurgical parameters and perform an experiment to measure these electrosurgical parameters. During the development of the list of requirements, there was a lack in the knowledge about the thermal effects of electrosurgery was found. In order to be able to fill this gap, a testing set-up was created as well as a protocol to perform measurements on electrosurgical units. Throughout the process of designing this set-up different obstacles were found which had to be overcome. These obstacles consisted of the influence of light on thermal camera measurements, the influence of a smoke extractor on thermal measurements in general, measuring simultaneously or separately with a thermal camera and a thermocouple and measuring inside the tofu or on top of the tofu with the thermocouples. Experiments provided data which concluded that light had an effect on the measurements, using the FLIR E75 camera. Therefore these experiments should be performed in the dark. Abstract

A technology-independent set-up for the full and direct characterization of short-circuit lowfrequency noise currents in two-port electron devices is presented. It is based on the use of low-noise transimpedance amplifiers and a specially-designed active bias network, adopted at the collector/drain port of the device. The features of the set-up proposed allow for a fast and accurate estimation of LF noise current power spectra, within a wide range of DC current bias levels, without the need for any reconfigurations and by carrying out a single-step procedure to achieve each bias point of interest.

Abstract

This paper is devoted to the description of a transmission line laboratory demonstrator for intermediate level communication engineering students, within a course on radiation and guided waves. Student activities have been organized according to the needs of intermediate level students and the objectives of an introductory laboratory, which are substantially different from those of specialized laboratory activities aimed at higher level students and placed just before graduation. Since a large number of students attend these laboratory sessions before they choose their specialty, low cost is an unavoidable requirement to be considered. For this reason, the measurement set-up makes use of standard instrumentation, usually available in a basic electronic laboratory, which allows multiplication of work places at a reasonable cost. Both time domain reflectometry and sinusoidal steady state measurements are presented to characterize the main parameters of a coaxial line. However, discussions are mainly focused on sinusoidal measurements, which are scarce in the literature and exclusively devoted to slotted line measurements.
