The use of computer-based systems in management in Saudi Arabia has been studied by conducting a written survey among local managers in the country's petroleum and banking sectors. Results indicate that Saudi Arabian managers have limited computing experience which is common in developing countries. However, it has been observed that managers in the country's biggest corporations have access to state-of-the-art computer systems and have the ability to use them.

Queen Margaret College's Communications and Information Studies Dept. has ben using computer-mediated communication since the early 1990s. Data from the department used to determine the level of acceptance of CMC among information science students. Results showed that most information students still prefer administrative and course-orientated courses despite the versatility of CMC.

Research information usage by biologists was surveyed in different institutions: a university agricultural facility, a university school of biology, a government research facility and a pharmaceutical laboratory. Senior staff in these facilities were to found to be more active in information use and acquisition than their junior colleagues. A difference was also noted among the facilities on the types of research they pursue, most likely a result of how they handle information.

Information technology usage by researchers in the biological sciences are investigated. To this end, an agricultural faculty, a school of biology in a university, a government research facility and a pharmaceutical laboratory are surveyed. The poll, which revealed different levels of usage depending on the type of institution and field of specialty, showed a higher degree of computer-based information handling among senior researchers.

An experimental study has been made of the problems of, and minimum requirements for, teaching hypertext (in this case, HyperCard) to undergraduate students. The results indicate that undergraduate beginners prefer to learn about the concepts as well as the practice of hypertext via hands-on experience, and that such an approach provides a satisfactory introductory course in hypertext. It appears that absolute beginners find particular problems in using a mouse, and in interpreting menus, icons, etc., A study of hypertext teaching in information science in the UK came to some conclusions regarding the best way to teach the undergraduates in colleges. It was found that the students learned better in pairs, particularly in pairs of matched computer literacy and that most of the emphasis on the teaching method should be hands-on experience. Some problems encountered in learning hypertext was for some, the dexterity required for the use of the mouse. The benefits from the learning of hypertext included improved computer literacy, improved ability to handle practicle problems, the increased design skills and a broader knowledge of information retrieval.

A comparison of university-based information technologies (IT) in the UK and Saudi Arabia shows that the more industrialized country is inevitably the more advanced user and developer of IT. The UK is more advanced in its use of electronic mail and individual use of retrieval systems is growing. On the other hand, Saudi Arabia's universities are in the level of UK universities five to 10 years ago in their use of IT.
