We use the rms and lag spectra of the type-C quasi-periodic oscillation (QPO) to study the properties of the Comptonisation region (aka corona) during the low/hard and hard-intermediate states of the main outburst and reflare of MAXI J1348$-$630. We simultaneously fit the time-averaged energy spectrum of the source and the fractional rms and phase-lag spectra of the QPO with the time-dependent Comptonization model vKompth. The data can be explained by two physically connected coronae interacting with the accretion disc via a feedback loop of X-ray photons. The best-fitting model consists of a corona of $\sim$10$^3$ km located at the inner edge of the disc and a second corona of $\sim$10$^4$ km horizontally extended and covering the inner parts of the accretion disc. The properties of both coronae during the reflare are similar to those during the low/hard state of the main outburst, reinforcing the idea that both the outburst and the reflare are driven by the same physical mechanisms. We combine our results for the type-C QPO with those from previous work focused on the study of type-A and type-B QPOs with the same model to study the evolution of the geometry of the corona through the whole outburst, including the reflare of MAXI J1348$-$630. Finally, we show that the sudden increase in the phase-lag frequency spectrum and the sharp drop in the coherence function previously observed in MAXI J1348$-$630 are due to the type-C QPO during the decay of the outburst and can be explained in terms of the geometry of the coronae., Comment: 18 pages, 8 figures, 1 table. We present a comprehensive study based on multi-wavelength observations from the NuSTAR, NICER, Swift, Fermi, NEOWISE, and ATCA telescopes during the 2022 outburst of the black hole X-ray binary IGR J17091-3624. Our investigation concentrates on the heartbeat-like variability in the X-ray emission, with the aim of using it as a tool to unravel the origin of the non-thermal emission during the heartbeat state. Through X-ray timing and spectral analysis, we observe that the heartbeat-like variability correlates with changes in the disk temperature, supporting the disk radiation pressure instability scenario. Moreover, in addition to a Comptonization component, our time-averaged and phase-resolved spectroscopy reveal the presence of a power-law component that varies independently from the disk component. Combined with the radio to X-ray spectral energy distribution fitting, our results suggest that the power-law component could originate from synchrotron self-Compton radiation in the jet, which requires a strong magnetic field of about $B = (0.3$-$3.5)\times10^6$ G. Additionally, assuming that IGR J17091-3624 and GRS 1915+105 share the same radio-X-ray correlation coefficient during both the hard and the heartbeat states, we obtain a distance of $13.7\pm2.3$ kpc for IGR J17091-3624., Comment: 19 pages, 11 figures, 3 tables; accepted for publication in ApJ

The Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer (NICER) monitoring campaign of Cyg X-1 allows us to study its spectral-timing behavior at energies ${<}1$ keV across all states. The hard state power spectrum can be decomposed into two main broad Lorentzians with a transition at around 1 Hz. The lower-frequency Lorentzian is the dominant component at low energies. The higher-frequency Lorentzian begins to contribute significantly to the variability above 1.5 keV and dominates at high energies. We show that the low- and high-frequency Lorentzians likely represent individual physical processes. The lower-frequency Lorentzian can be associated with a (possibly Comptonized) disk component, while the higher-frequency Lorentzian is clearly associated with the Comptonizing plasma. At the transition of these components, we discover a low-energy timing phenomenon characterized by an abrupt lag change of hard (${\gtrsim}2$ keV) with respect to soft (${\lesssim}1.5$ keV) photons, accompanied by a drop in coherence, and a reduction in amplitude of the second broad Lorentzian. The frequency of the phenomenon increases with the frequencies of the Lorentzians as the source softens and cannot be seen when the power spectrum is single-humped. A comparison to transient low-mass X-ray binaries shows that this feature does not only appear in Cyg X-1, but that it is a general property of accreting black hole binaries. In Cyg X-1, we find that the variability at low and high energies is overall highly coherent in the hard and intermediate states. The high coherence shows that there is a process at work which links the variability, suggesting a physical connection between the accretion disk and Comptonizing plasma. We present a detailed analysis of the observations with the Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope of the black hole X-ray transient 4U~1543-47 during its outburst in 2021. We find a clear state transition during the outburst decay of the source. Using previous measurements of the black-hole mass and distance to the source, the source luminosity during this transition is close to the Eddington limit. The light curves before and after the transition can be fitted by two exponential functions with short ($\sim 16$ days) and long ($\sim 130$ days) decay time scales, respectively. We detect strong reflection features in all observations that can be described with either the RelxillNS or Reflionx_bb reflection models, both of which have a black-body incident spectrum. In the super-Eddington state, we observe a Comptonized component characterized by a low electron temperature of approximately 2.0 keV. We suggest that this component appears exclusively within the inner radiation-pressure dominated region of the supercritical disk as a part of the intrinsic spectrum of the accretion disk itself. This feature vanishes as the source transitions into the sub-Eddington state. The emissivity index of the accretion disk in the reflection component is significantly different before and after the transition, $\sim3.0$-$5.0$ and $\sim7.0$-$9.0$ in the super- and sub-Eddington states, respectively. Based on the reflection geometry of returning disk radiation, the geometrically thicker the accretion disk, the smaller the emissivity index. Therefore, we propose that the transition is primarily driven by the change of the accretion flow from a supercritical to a thin disk configuration.

We analyzed an observation with the Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array of the black-hole X-ray binary MAXI J1535-571 in the soft intermediate state, in which we detected a 2.5-ks long flare. Our spectral fitting results suggest that MAXI J1535-571 possesses a high spin of 0.97 (-0.10/+0.02) and a low inclination of approximately 24 deg. We observed a gradual increase in the inner disc radius, as determined from fits to the continuum spectrum. This trend is inconsistent with an increased flux ratio of the thermal component, as well as the source evolving towards the soft state. This inconsistency may be attributed to a gradual decrease of the color correction factor. Additionally, with a flare velocity of approximately 0.5 c and a higher hardness ratio during the flare period, the quasi-simultaneous detection of a type-B QPO in the Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer data, and quasi-simultaneous ejecta launch through radio observations collectively provide strong evidence supporting the possibility that the flare originated from a discrete jet ejection., Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures, 3 tables; accepted to be published in MNRAS

We conducted an analysis of 45 bursts observed from 4U 1636$-$53. To investigate the mechanism behind the light curve profiles and the impact of thermonuclear X-ray bursts on the accretion environment in accreting neutron star low-mass X-ray binaries. This analysis employed both light curve and time-resolved spectroscopy methodologies, with data collected by the \textit{Insight}-HXMT instrument. We found that 30 bursts exhibited similar light curve profiles and were predominantly in the hard state, and two photospheric radius expansion (PRE) bursts were in the soft state. The light curves of most bursts did not follow a single exponential decay but displayed a dual-exponential behavior. The initial exponent had a duration of approximately 6 s. We utilized both the standard method and the `$f_{\rm a}$' method to fit the burst spectra. The majority of the `$f_{\rm a}$' values exceeded 1, indicating an enhancement of the persistent emission during the burst. Under the two comptonization components assumption, we suggest that the scattering of burst photons by the inner corona may mainly contribute to the persistent emission enhancement. We also observed an inverse correlation between the maximum $f_{\rm a}$ and the persistent emission flux in the non-PRE burst. This anti-correlation suggests that when the accretion rate is lower, there is a greater enhancement of persistent emission during the burst peak. We present a novel method for measuring the lags of (weak) variability components in neutron-star and black-hole low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs). For this we assume that the power and cross spectra of these sources consists of a number of components that are coherent in different energy bands, but are incoherent with one another. The technique is based on fitting simultaneously the power spectrum (PS) and the Real and Imaginary parts of the cross spectrum (CS) with a combination of Lorentzian functions. We show that, because the PS of LMXBs is insensitive to signals with a large Imaginary part and a small Real part in the CS, this approach allows us to uncover new variability components that are only detected in the CS. We also demonstrate that, contrary to earlier claims, the frequency of the type-C quasi-periodic oscillation (QPO) in the black-hole binary GRS 1915+105 does not depend on energy. Rather, the apparent energy dependence of the QPO frequency can be explained by the presence of a separate QPO component with a slightly higher frequency than that of the QPO, whose rms amplitude increases faster with energy than the rms amplitude of the QPO. From all the above we conclude that, as in the case of the PS, the CS of black-hole and neutron-star binaries can be fitted by a combination of Lorentzian components. Our findings provide evidence that the frequency-dependent part of the transfer function of these systems can be described by a combination of responses, each of them acting over relatively well-defined time scales. The properties of sub-second time variability of the X-ray emission of the black-hole binary GRS 1915+105 are very complex and strictly connected to its patterns of variability observed on long time scales. A key aspect for determining the geometry of the accretion flow is the study of time lags between emission at different energies, as they are associated to key time scales of the system. In particular, it is important to examine the lags associated to the strong low-frequency Quasi-periodic Oscillations (QPOs), as the QPOs provide unambiguous special frequencies to sample the variability. We have analyzed data from an observation with the AstroSat satellite, in which the frequency of the low-frequency QPO varies smoothly between 2.5 and 6.6 Hz on a time scale of ~10 hours. The derived phase lags show the same properties and evolution of those observed on time scales of a few hundred days, indicating that changes in the system geometry can take place on times below one day. We fit selected energy spectra of the source and rms and phase-lag spectra of the QPO with a time-variable Comptonization model, as done previously to RossiXTE data of the same source, and find that indeed the derived parameters match those obtained for variations on much longer time scales., Comment: 8 pages, 9 figures, 3 tables; accepted for publication in MNRAS

The high-frequency bump, characterized by a frequency exceeding ~30 Hz, represents a seldom-explored time-variability feature in the power density spectrum (PDS) of black-hole X-ray binaries. In the 2002, 2004, 2007 and 2010 outbursts of GX 339-4, the bump has been occasionally observed in conjunction with type-C quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs). We systematically study the properties of the bump during these four outbursts observed by Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) in the 2-60 keV bands and detect the bump in 39 observations. While the frequencies of the type-C QPOs are in the range of ~0.1-9 Hz, the root-mean-square (rms) amplitude of the bump shows an evolution in the hardness ratio versus the type-C QPO frequency plot. By comparing the rms amplitude of the bump with the corona temperature and simultaneous radio jet flux of the source, as previously studied in GRS 1915+105, we establish that in the hard state of GX 339-4, the bump is always strong, with the measurements of the rms amplitude in the range of 4-10%. At the same time, the corona temperature is high and the radio flux is low. These findings indicate that, using the bump as a proxy, the majority of the accretion energy is directed towards the hot corona rather than being channeled into the radio jet. We present a detailed analysis of the spectral and timing characteristics of a 7-Hz type-A quasi-periodic oscillation (QPO) detected in NICER observations of the black hole X-ray binary MAXI J1348-630 during its high-soft state. The QPO is broad and weak, with an integrated fractional rms amplitude of 0.9 per cent in the 0.5-10 keV band. Thanks to the large effective area of NICER, combined with the high flux of the source and a relatively long accumulative exposure time, we construct the first rms and phase-lag spectra for a type-A QPO. Our analysis reveals that the fractional rms amplitude of the QPO increases with energy from below 1 per cent at 1 keV to 3 per cent at 6 keV. The shape of the QPO spectrum is similar to that of the Comptonised component, suggesting that the Comptonised region is driving the variability. The phase lags at the QPO frequency are always soft taking the lowest energy as reference. By jointly fitting the time-averaged spectrum of the source and the rms and phase-lag spectra of the QPO with the time-dependent Comptonisation model vkompthdk, we find that the radiative properties of the type-A QPO can be explained by a vertically extended Comptonised region with a size of 2300 km., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

The incoming Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE) observations of X-ray binaries provide a new tool to investigate the underlying accretion geometry. Here we report the first measurements of X-ray polarization of the extra-galactic black-hole X-ray binary LMC X$-$3. We find a polarization fraction of $\sim 3%$ at a polarization angle of $\sim 135^\circ$ in the $2-8$ keV energy band with statistical significance at the 7$\sigma$ level. This polarization measurement significantly exceeds the minimum detectable polarization threshold of 1.2% for the source, ascertained at a 99% confidence level within the $2-8$ keV energy band. The simultaneous spectro-polarimetric fitting of NICER, Swift/XRT, and IXPE revealed the presence of a disc with a temperature of $\sim$1 keV and a Comptonized component with a power-law index of $\sim$ 2.4, confirming the soft nature of the source. The polarization degree increases with energy from $\sim$3% in the $2-5.7$ keV band to $\sim$9% in the $5.7-8$ keV band, while the polarization angle is energy independent. The observed energy dependence and the sudden jump of polarization fraction above 5 keV supports the idea of a static slab coronal geometry for the Comptonizing medium of LMC X$-$3., Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures, 3 tables, Accepted for publication in MNRAS

The study of quasi periodic oscillations (QPOs) plays a vital role in understanding the nature and geometry of the Comptonizing medium around black-hole X-ray binaries. The spectral-state dependence of various types of QPOs (namely A, B, & C) suggests that they could have different origins. The simultaneous presence of different types of QPOs would therefore imply the simultaneous occurrence of different mechanisms. In this work we study the radiative properties of two non-harmonically related QPOs in the black-hole binary GRO J1655--40 detected at the peak of the ultraluminous state during the 2005 outburst of the source. The two QPOs have been previously identified as types B & C, respectively. We jointly fit the phase-lag and rms spectra of the QPOs and the time-averaged spectrum of the source with the time-dependent Comptonization model vkompth to infer the geometry of the media producing the QPOs. The time-averaged spectrum required a hot disk of 2.3 keV and a steep power law with index 2.7, revealing that the source was in an ultraluminous state. The corona that drives the variability of the type-B QPO is smaller in size and has a lower feedback fraction than the one that drives the variability of the type-C QPO. This suggests the simultaneous presence of a horizontally extended corona covering the accretion disk and a vertically elongated jet-like corona that are responsible for the type-C & B QPOs, respectively., Comment: Accepted in MNRAS. 10 pages, 5 figures, 1 table

We probe the spectropolarimetric properties of the black-hole binary source 4U 1630$-$47 in the steep power law state. We detect a significant polarization fraction of $\sim$7 % at a polarization angle of $\sim$21 $^\circ$. The $2-12$ keV NICER spectrum can be fitted with a combination of a thermal and a Comptonization component, the latter characterized by a spectral index, $\Gamma \sim$2.1, along with a reflection feature at $\sim$7.0 keV. In the $2-8$ keV band, the degree of polarization of 4U 1630$-$47 in the steep power law state is 4.4 $\sigma$ different from the value previously measured in the high soft state. In the steep power law state, the polarization fraction increases as a function of energy but exhibits an overall drop in each energy band compared to that of the high soft state. We propose that the decrease in the polarization fraction in the steep power law state could be attributed to the presence of a corona. The observed polarization properties in both states can be explained by the self-irradiation of the disk around a Kerr black hole, likely influenced by the frame-dragging effect., Comment: 6 pages, 7 figures, 3 tables, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We analyze a Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer (NICER) observation of the black hole X-ray binary MAXI J1820+070 during a transition from type-C to type-B quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs). We find that below ~2 keV, for the type-B QPOs the rms amplitude is lower and the magnitude of the phase lags is larger than for the type-C QPOs. Above that energy, the rms and phase-lag spectra of the type-B and type-C QPOs are consistent with being the same. We perform a joint fit of the time-averaged spectra of the source, and the rms and phase-lag spectra of the QPOs with the time-dependent Comptonization model vkompth to study the geometry of the corona during the transition. We find that the data can be well-fitted with a model consisting of a small and a large corona that are physically connected. The sizes of the small and large coronae increase gradually during the type-C QPO phase whereas they decrease abruptly at the transition to type-B QPO. At the same time, the inner radius of the disc moves inward at the QPO transition. Combined with simultaneous radio observations showing that discrete jet ejections happen around the time of the QPO transition, we propose that a corona that expands horizontally during the type-C QPO phase, from ~10^{4} km (~800 Rg) to ~10^{5} km (~8000 Rg) overlying the accretion disc, transforms into a vertical jet-like corona extending over ~10^{4} km (~800 Rg) during the type-B QPO phase., Comment: 22 pages, 16 figures, 2 tables, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Astronomy is presently experiencing profound growth in the deployment of machine learning to explore large datasets. However, transient quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) which appear in power density spectra of many X-ray binary system observations are an intriguing phenomena heretofore not explored with machine learning. In light of this, we propose and experiment with novel methodologies for predicting the presence and properties of QPOs to make the first ever detections and characterizations of QPOs with machine learning models. We base our findings on raw energy spectra and processed features derived from energy spectra using an abundance of data from the NICER and RXTE space telescope archives for two black hole low mass X-ray binary sources, GRS 1915+105 and MAXI J1535-571. We advance these non-traditional methods as a foundation for using machine learning to discover global inter-object generalizations between - and provide unique insights about - energy and timing phenomena to assist with the ongoing challenge of unambiguously understanding the nature and origin of QPOs. We analysed a dedicated NuSTAR observation of the neutron-star low-mass X-ray binary Z-source GX 13+1 to study the timing and spectral properties of the source. From the colour-colour diagram, we conclude that during that observation the source transitioned from the normal branch to the flaring branch. We fitted the spectra of the source in each branch with a model consisting of an accretion disc, a Comptonised blackbody, relativistic reflection (relxillNS), and photo-ionised absorption (warmabs). Thanks to the combination of the large effective area and good energy resolution of NuSTAR at high energies, we found evidence of relativistic reflection in both the Fe K line profile, and the Compton hump present in the 10--25 keV energy range. The inner disc radius is $R_{\rm in} \lesssim 9.6~r_g$, which allowed us to further constrain the magnetic field strength to $B \lesssim 1.8 \times 10^8$ G. We also found evidence for the presence of a hot wind leading to photo-ionised absorption of Fe and Ni, with a Ni overabundance of $\sim$6 times solar. From the spectral fits, we find that the distance between the ionising source and the slab of ionised absorbing material is $\sim 4-40 \times 10^5$ km. We also found that the width of the boundary layer extends $\sim$3 km above the surface of a neutron star, which yielded a neutron-star radius $R_{\rm NS}\lesssim 16$ km. The scenario inferred from the spectral modelling becomes self-consistent only for high electron densities in the accretion disk, $n_e \sim 10^{22}-10^{23}$ cm$^{-3}$, as expected for a Shakura-Sunyaev disc, and significantly above the densities provided by relxillNS models. We conduct a spectro-polarimetric study of the accreting X-ray pulsar Hercules X-1 using observations with the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE). IXPE monitored the source in three different Epochs, sampling two Main-on and one Short-on state of the well-known super-orbital period of the source. We find that the 2-7 keV polarization fraction increases significantly from ~ $7-9$ % in the Main-on state to ~ $15-19$ % in the Short-on state, while the polarization angle remains more or less constant or changes slightly, ~ $47-59$ degrees, in all three Epochs. The polarization degree and polarization angle are consistent with being energy-independent for all three Epochs. We propose that in the Short-on state, when the neutron star is partially blocked by the disk warp, the increase in the polarization fraction can be explained as a result of the preferential obstruction of one of the magnetic poles of the neutron star., Comment: 7 pages, 4 Figures, 1 Table, accepted for publication in ApJL

We detect a high level of polarization in the X-ray emission of the black-hole binary 4U 1630-47 in an observation with the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer. The 2-8 keV polarization degree is 8 % at a position angle of $18^\circ$, with the polarization degree increasing significantly with energy, from ~6 % at ~2 keV to ~ 11 % at ~8 keV. The continuum emission in the spectrum of simultaneous observations with the Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer, NICER, is well described with only a thermal disc spectrum, with stringent upper limits to any Comptonized emission from the corona. Together with the lack of significant variability in the Fourier power spectrum, this suggests that the source was in the high-soft state at the time of these observations. The NICER spectrum reveals the presence of several absorption lines in the 6-9 keV band that we fit with two ionized absorbers, providing evidence of the presence of a strong disk wind, which supports the idea that the source was in the soft state. Previous measurements of X-ray polarization in other sources in harder states were associated with the corona or the jet in those systems. Given that the corona is significantly absent in this observation of 4U 1630-47, and that the jet in black-hole binaries is quenched in the high-soft state, we speculate that in this observation of 4U 1630-47, the polarization likely arises from the direct and reflected radiation of the accretion disk in this source., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures, 3 Tables, Accepted for publication in ApJL

MAXI J1535-571 is a black-hole X-ray binary that in 2017 exhibited a very bright outburst which reached a peak flux of up to 5 Crab in the 2-20 keV band. Given the high flux, several X-ray space observatories obtained unprecedented high signal-to-noise data of key parts of the outburst. In our previous paper we studied the corona of MAXI J1535-571 in the hard-intermediate state (HIMS) with Insight-HXMT. In this paper we focus on the study of the corona in the soft-intermediate state (SIMS) through the spectral-timing analysis of 26 NICER detections of the type-B quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs). From simultaneous fits of the energy, rms and lag spectra of these QPOs with our time-dependent Comptonization model, we find that in the SIMS the corona size is ~ 6500 km and vertically extended. We detect a narrow iron line in the energy spectra, which we interpret to be due to the illumination of the outer part of the accretion disk by this large corona. We follow the evolution of the corona and the radio jet during the HIMS-SIMS transition, and find that the jet flux peaks after the time when the corona extends to its maximum vertical size. The jet flux starts to decay after the corona contracts vertically towards the black hole. This behavior points to a connection between the X-ray corona and the radio jet similar to that seen in other sources., Comment: 13 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present a detailed spectral and temporal analysis of the black-hole candidate MAXI~J1535$-$571 using NICER observations in September and October 2017. We focus specifically on observations in the hard-intermediate state when the source shows type-C quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs). We fitted the time-averaged spectrum of the source and the rms and phase-lag spectra of the QPO with a one-component time-dependent Comptonization model. We found that the corona contracts from $\sim 10^4$ to $\sim 3 \times 10^3$ km as the QPO frequency increases from $\sim 1.8$ Hz to $\sim 9.0$ Hz. The fits suggest that the system would consists of two coronas, a small one that dominates the time-averaged spectrum and a larger one, possibly the jet, that dominates the rms and lag spectra of the QPO. We found a significant break in the relation of the spectral parameters of the source and the properties of the QPO, including its lag spectra, with QPO frequency. The change in the relations happens when the QPO frequency crosses a critical frequency $\nu_c \approx 3.0$ Hz. Characterising the fast variability in black-hole low-mass X-ray binaries (BHXBs) can help us understand the geometrical and physical nature of the innermost regions of these sources. Particularly, type-B quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs), observed in BHXBs during the soft-intermediate state (SIMS) of an outburst, are believed to be connected to the ejection of a relativistic jet. The X-ray spectrum of a source in the SIMS is characterised by a dominant soft blackbody-like component - associated with the accretion disc - and a hard component - associated with a Comptonizing region or corona. Strong type-B QPOs were observed by NICER and AstroSat in GX 339$-$4 during its 2021 outburst. We find that the fractional rms spectrum of the QPO remains constant at $\sim$1 per cent for energies below $\sim$1.8 keV and then increases with increasing energy up to $\sim$17 per cent at 20$-$30 keV. We also find that the lag spectrum is "U-shaped", decreasing from $\sim$1.2 rad at 0.7 keV to 0 rad at $\sim$3.5 keV, and increasing again at higher energies up to $\sim$0.6 rad at 20$-$30 keV. Using a recently developed time-dependent Comptonization model, we fit simultaneously the fractional rms and lag spectra of the QPO and the time-averaged energy spectrum of GX 339$-$4 to constrain the physical parameters of the region responsible for the variability we observe. We studied the millihertz quasi-periodic oscillation (mHz QPO) in the 2020 outburst of the Be/X-ray binary 1A 0535+262 using Insight-HXMT data over a broad energy band. The mHz QPO is detected in the 27-120 keV energy band. The QPO centroid frequency is correlated with the source flux, and evolves in the 35-95 mHz range during the outburst. The QPO is most significant in the 50-65 keV band, with a significance of ~ 8 sigma, but is hardly detectable (<2 sigma) in the lowest (1-27 keV) and highest (>120 keV) energy bands. Notably, the detection of mHz QPO above 80 keV is the highest energy at which mHz QPOs have been detected so far. The fractional rms of the mHz QPO first increases and then decreases with energy, reaching the maximum amplitude at 50-65 keV. In addition, at the peak of the outburst, the mHz QPO shows a double-peak structure, with the difference between the two peaks being constant at ~0.02 Hz, twice the spin frequency of the neutron star in this system. We discuss different scenarios explaining the generation of the mHz QPO, including the beat frequency model, the Keplerian frequency model, the model of two jets in opposite directions, and the precession of the neutron star, but find that none of them can explain the origin of the QPO well. We conclude that the variability of non-thermal radiation may account for the mHz QPO, but further theoretical studies are needed to reveal the physical mechanism., Comment: 13 pages, 7 figures. The Athena X-ray Integral Unit (X-IFU) is the high resolution X-ray spectrometer, studied since 2015 for flying in the mid-30s on the Athena space X-ray Observatory, a versatile observatory designed to address the Hot and Energetic Universe science theme, selected in November 2013 by the Survey Science Committee. Based on a large format array of Transition Edge Sensors (TES), it aims to provide spatially resolved X-ray spectroscopy, with a spectral resolution of 2.5 eV (up to 7 keV) over an hexagonal field of view of 5 arc minutes (equivalent diameter). The X-IFU entered its System Requirement Review (SRR) in June 2022, at about the same time when ESA called for an overall X-IFU redesign (including the X-IFU cryostat and the cooling chain), due to an unanticipated cost overrun of Athena. In this paper, after illustrating the breakthrough capabilities of the X-IFU, we describe the instrument as presented at its SRR, browsing through all the subsystems and associated requirements. We then show the instrument budgets, with a particular emphasis on the anticipated budgets of some of its key performance parameters. Finally we briefly discuss on the ongoing key technology demonstration activities, the calibration and the activities foreseen in the X-IFU Instrument Science Center, and touch on communication and outreach activities, the consortium organisation, and finally on the life cycle assessment of X-IFU aiming at minimising the environmental footprint, associated with the development of the instrument. Thanks to the studies conducted so far on X-IFU, it is expected that along the design-to-cost exercise requested by ESA, the X-IFU will maintain flagship capabilities in spatially resolved high resolution X-ray spectroscopy, enabling most of the original X-IFU related scientific objectives of the Athena mission to be retained. Low mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs) show strong variability over a broad range of time scales. The analysis of this variability, in particular of the quasi-periodic oscillations (QPO), is key to understanding the properties of the innermost regions of the accretion flow in these systems. We present a time-dependent Comptonisation model that fits the energy-dependent rms-amplitude and phase-lag spectra of low-frequency QPOs in black-hole (BH) LMXBs. We model the accretion disc as a multi-temperature blackbody source emitting soft photons which are then Compton up-scattered in a spherical corona, including feedback of Comptonised photons that return to the disc. We compare our results with those obtained with a model in which the seed-photons source is a spherical blackbody: at low energies the time-averaged, rms and phase-lag spectra are smoother for the disk-blackbody than for a blackbody, while at high energies both models give similar spectra. In general, we find that the rms increases with energy, the slope of the phase-lag spectrum depends strongly on the feedback, while the minimum-lag energy is correlated with the disc temperature. We fit the model to a 4.45-Hz type-B QPO in the BH LMXB MAXI J1438-630 and find statistically-better fits and more compatible parameters with the steady-state spectrum than those obtained with a blackbody seed-photons source. Furthermore, we successfully apply the model to the type-C QPO in the BH LMXB GRS 1915+105, and thus conclude that this variable-Comptonisation model reproduces the rms and phase-lags of both type B and C low-frequency QPOs in BH LMXBs., Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We study the properties of the type-C quasi-periodic oscillation (type-C QPO) of MAXI J1348-630 during its 2019 outburst and reflare with NICER. This is the first time that the evolution of the properties of type-C QPOs is studied during an outburst reflare. We found that the properties of the type-C QPO during the reflare are similar to those of type-C QPOs observed in other black-hole systems during outburst. This suggests that the physical processes responsible for type-C QPOs are the same in a reflare and in an outburst. We also found that the FWHM of a high-frequency broadband component observed during the reflare changes significantly with energy. We studied the energy-dependent fractional rms amplitude and phase lags of the type-C QPO from 0.5 keV to 12 keV. We found that the fractional rms amplitude increases up to 2-3 keV and then remains approximately constant above this energy, and the lag spectra of the type-C QPO are hard. We discuss the dependence of the fractional rms amplitude and phase lags with energy in the context of Comptonisation as the radiative mechanism driving the QPO rms and lag spectra., Comment: 16 pages, 11 figures, 1 table. The inverse Compton process by which soft photons are up-scattered by hot electrons in a corona plays a fundamental role in shaping the X-ray spectra of black-hole (BH) low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs), particularly in the hard and hard-intermediate states. In these states, the power-density spectra of these sources typically show Type-C low-frequency quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs). Although several models have been proposed to explain the dynamical origin of their frequency, only a few of those models predict the spectral-timing radiative properties of the QPOs. Here we study the physical and geometrical properties of the corona of the BH-LMXB GRS 1915+105 based on a large sample of observations available in the RXTE archive. We use a recently-developed spectral-timing Comptonisation model to fit simultaneously the energy-dependent fractional rms amplitude and phase-lag spectra of the Type-C QPO in 398 observations. For this, we include spectral information gathered from fitting a Comptonisation model to the corresponding time-averaged spectra. We analyse the dependence of the physical and geometrical properties of the corona upon the QPO frequency and spectral state of the source, the latter characterised by the hardness ratio. We find consistent trends in the evolution of the corona size, temperature, and feedback (the fraction of the corona photons that impinge back onto the disc) that persist for roughly 15~years. By correlating our observations with simultaneous radio-monitoring of the source at 15 GHz, we propose a scenario in which the disc-corona interactions connect with the launching mechanism of the radio jet in this source., Comment: 12 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

The emission from the accreting black holes (BHs) in low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs) covers a broad energy band from radio to X-rays. Studying the correlations between emission in different energy bands during outbursts can provide valuable information about the accretion process. We analyse the simultaneous optical, ultraviolet (UV) and X-ray data of the BH-LMXB Swift J1753.5-0127 during its $\sim$ 12-year long outburst with the {\it Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory}. We find that the UV/optical and X-ray emission are strongly correlated during the hard states of the outburst. We fit the relation with a power-law function $F_{UV/optical} \propto F_{X}^{\beta}$ and find that the power-law index $\beta$ increases from $\sim$ 0.24 to $\sim$ 0.33 as the UV/optical wavelength decreases from $\sim$ 5400 \r{A} (V) to $\sim$ 2030 \r{A} (UVW2). We explore the possible reasons for this and suggest that in Swift J1753.5-0127 the UV/optical emission is dominated by a viscously heated accretion disc at large radii. We find that the data that deviate from the correlation correspond to the low-intensity peaks appeared in the X-ray band during the outburst, and suggest that these deviations are driven by the emission from the inner part of the accretion disc., Comment: 15 pages, 8 figures, 1 table, accepted by MNRAS

We analysed 14 observations with kilohertz quasi-periodic oscillations (kHz QPOs) of the neutron star X-ray binary XTE J1701$-$462, the first source to show a clear transition between atoll and Z-like behaviour during a single outburst. We calculated the average cross-spectrum of both atoll and Z-phase observations of XTE J1701$-$462 between a reference/hard band (6.1 - 25.7 keV) and a subject/soft band (2.1 - 5.7 keV) to obtain, using a novel technique, the average time lags of the lower and upper kHz QPOs. During the atoll phase, we found that at the frequency of the lower kHz QPO the soft photons lag behind the hard ones by $18 \pm 8$ $\mu$s, whereas during the Z phase the lags are $33\pm35$ $\mu$s, consistent with zero. This difference in the lags of both phases suggests that in XTE J1701$-$462, as observed in other sources, the lags decrease with increasing luminosity. We found that for both the atoll and Z phase observations the fractional rms amplitude increases with energy up to $\sim$10 keV and remains more or less constant at higher energies. Since these changes in the variability of XTE J1701$-$462 occur within the same outburst, properties like the mass of the neutron star or the inclination of the system cannot be responsible for the differences in the timing properties of the kHz QPOs in the atoll and Z phase. Here we suggest that these differences are driven by a Comptonizing component or corona, possibly oscillating in a coupled mode with the innermost regions of the accretion disc., Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

GRS 1915+105 can show type-C quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) in the power density spectrum. A high-frequency QPO (HFQPO) at 67 Hz has been observed in this source, albeit less often than the type-C QPOs. Besides these features, GRS 1915+105 sometimes shows a broad bump in the power spectrum at around 30-150 Hz. We study the power spectra of GRS 1915+105 with the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer when the source was in the $\chi$ class. We find that the rms amplitude of the bump depends strongly upon both the frequency of the type-C QPO and the hardness ratio, and is correlated with the corona temperature and anti-correlated with the radio flux at 15 GHz. The characteristic frequency of the bump is better correlated with a combination of the frequency of the type-C QPO and the hardness ratio than with the frequency of the type-C QPO alone. The rms amplitude of the bump generally increases with energy from ~1-2% at ~3 keV to ~10-15% at ~30 keV. We suggest that the bump and the high-frequency QPO may be the same variability component but the properties of the corona affect the coherence of this variability, leading either to a HFQPO when the spectrum is in the relatively soft $\gamma$ class, or to a bump when the spectrum is in the hard $\chi$ class. Type-C quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) in black hole X-ray transients can appear when the source is in the low-hard and hard-intermediate states. The spectral-timing evolution of the type-C QPO in MAXI J1535-571 has been recently studied with Insight-HXMT. Here we fit simultaneously the time-averaged energy spectrum, using a relativistic reflection model, and the fractional rms and phase-lag spectra of the type-C QPOs, using a recently developed time-dependent Comptonization model when the source was in the intermediate state. We show, for the first time, that the time-dependent Comptonization model can successfully explain the X-ray data up to 100 keV. We find that in the hard-intermediate state the frequency of the type-C QPO decreases from 2.6 Hz to 2.1 Hz, then increases to 3.3 Hz, and finally increases to ~ 9 Hz. Simultaneously with this, the evolution of corona size and the feedback fraction (the fraction of photons up-scattered in the corona that return to the disc) indicates the change of the morphology of the corona. Comparing with contemporaneous radio observations, this evolution suggests a possible connection between the corona and the jet when the system is in the hard-intermediate state and about to transit into the soft-intermediate state., Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

GRS 1915+105 was the first stellar-mass black-hole in our Galaxy to display a superluminal radio jet, similar to those observed in active galactic nuclei with a supermassive black hole at the centre. It has been proposed that the radio emission in GRS 1915+105 is fed by instabilities in the accretion disc by which the inner parts of the accretion flow is ejected in the jet. Here we show that there is a significant correlation between: (i) the radio flux, coming from the jet, and the flux of the iron emission line, coming from the disc and, (ii) the temperature of the corona that produces the high-energy part of the X-ray spectrum via inverse Compton scattering and the amplitude of a high-frequency variability component coming from the innermost part of the accretion flow. At the same time, the radio flux and the flux of the iron line are strongly anti-correlated with the temperature of the X-ray corona and the amplitude of the high-frequency variability component. These correlations persist over ~10 years, despite the highly variable X-ray and radio properties of the source in that period. Our findings provide, for the first time, incontrovertible evidence that the energy that powers this black-hole system can be directed either to the X-ray corona or the jet. When this energy is used to power the corona, raising its temperature, there is less energy left to fuel the jet and the radio flux drops, and vice versa. A common misconception among blockchain users is that pseudonymity guarantees privacy. The reality is almost the opposite. In particular, Tutela has three functionalities: first, it clusters together Ethereum addresses based on interaction history such that for an Ethereum address, we can identify other addresses likely owned by the same entity; second, it shows Ethereum users their potentially compromised transactions; third, Tutela computes the true size of the anonymity pool of each Tornado Cash mixer by excluding potentially compromised transactions. We studied the harmonics of the millihertz quasi-periodic oscillations (mHz QPOs) in the neutron-star low-mass X-ray binary 4U 1636-53 using the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer observations. We detected the harmonics of the mHz QPOs in 73 data intervals, with most of them in the transitional spectra state. We found that the ratio between the rms amplitude of the harmonic and that of the fundamental remains constant in a wide range of the fundamental frequency. More importantly, we studied, for the first time, the rms amplitude of the harmonics vs. energy in 4U 1636-53 in the 2-5 keV range. We found that the rms amplitude of both the harmonic and the fundamental shows a decreasing trend as the energy increases, which is different from the behaviors reported in QPOs in certain black hole systems. We study the energy-dependent time lags and rms fractional amplitude of the kilohertz quasi-periodic oscillations (kHz QPOs) of a group of neutron-star low mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs). We find that for the lower kHz QPO the slope of the best-fitting linear model to the time-lag spectrum and the total rms amplitude integrated over the 2 to 25 keV energy band both decrease exponentially with the luminosity of the source. For the upper kHz QPO the slope of the time-lag spectrum is consistent with zero, while the total rms amplitude decreases exponentially with the luminosity of the source. We show that both the slope of the time-lag spectrum and the total rms amplitude of the lower kHz QPO are linearly correlated with a slope of ~1. The X-ray transient MAXI J1631-479 went into outburst on 2018 December 21 and remained active for about seven months. Owing to various constraints it was monitored by NICER only during the decay phase of the outburst for about four months. The NICER observations were primarily in the soft state with a brief excursion to the hard intermediate state. While the soft state spectrum was dominated by thermal disk emission, the hard intermediate state spectrum had maximum contribution from the thermal Comptonization. Almost all intermediate-state power spectra had a Type-C low frequency quasi-periodic oscillation (within 4 - 10 Hz), often accompanied by a harmonic component. The frequency of these oscillations increased and the fractional rms decreased with inner-disk temperature suggesting a geometric origin. One observation in the middle of the outburst during the hard intermediate state had two non-harmonically related peaks. While one of them was definitely a Type-C QPO, the identification of the other one is uncertain. The rms spectra during the intermediate state had a hard shape from above 1 keV. Most models of the low frequency quasi periodic oscillations (QPOs) in low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs) explain the dynamical properties of those QPOs. On the other hand, in recent years reverberation models that assume a lamp-post geometry have been successfull in explaining the energy-dependent time lags of the broad-band noise component in stellar mass black-holes and active galactic nuclei. We have recently shown that Comptonisation can explain the spectral-timing properties of the kilo-hertz (kHz) QPOs observed in neutron star (NS) LMXBs. It is therefore worth exploring whether the same family of models would be as successful in explaining the low-frequency QPOs. In this work, we use a Comptonisation model to study the frequency dependence of the phase lags of the type-C QPO in the BH LMXB GRS 1915+105. The phase lags of the QPO in GRS 1915+105 make a transition from hard to soft at a QPO frequency of around 1.8 Hz. Our model shows that at high QPO frequencies a large corona of ~ 100-150 R_g covers most of the accretion disc and makes it 100% feedback dominated, thus producing soft lags. As the observed QPO frequency decreases, the corona gradually shrinks down to around 3-17 R_g, and at 1.8 Hz feedback onto the disc becomes inefficient leading to hard lags. Spectral-timing analysis of the fast variability observed in X-rays is a powerful tool to study the physical and geometrical properties of the accretion/ejection flows in black-hole binaries. The origin of type-B quasi-periodic oscillations (QPO), predominantly observed in black-hole candidates in the soft-intermediate state, has been linked to emission arising from the relativistic jet. In this state, the X-ray spectrum is characterised by a soft-thermal blackbody-like emission due to the accretion disc, an iron emission line (in the 6-7 keV range), and a power-law like hard component due to Inverse-Compton scattering of the soft-photon source by hot electrons in a corona or the relativistic jet itself. The spectral-timing properties of MAXI J1348-630 have been recently studied using observations obtained with the NICER observatory. The data show a strong type-B QPO at ~4.5 Hz with increasing fractional rms amplitude with energy and positive lags with respect to a reference band at 2-2.5 keV. We use a variable-Comptonisation model that assumes a sinusoidal coherent oscillation of the Comptonised X-ray flux and the physical parameters of the corona at the QPO frequency, to fit simultaneously the energy-dependent fractional rms amplitude and phase lags of this QPO. We show that two physically-connected Comptonisation regions can successfully explain the radiative properties of the QPO in the full 0.8-10 keV energy range., Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures, 3 tables. We have found and analysed 16 multi-peaked type-I bursts from the neutron-star low mass X-ray binary 4U 1636$-$53 with the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE). One of the bursts is a rare quadruple-peaked burst which was not previously reported. All 16 bursts show a multi-peaked structure not only in the X-ray light curves but also in the bolometric light curves. Most of the multi-peaked bursts appear in observations during the transition from the hard to the soft state in the colour-colour diagram. We find an anti-correlation between the second peak flux and the separation time between two peaks. We also find that in the double-peaked bursts the peak-flux ratio and the temperature of the thermal component in the pre-burst spectra are correlated. This indicates that the double-peaked structure in the light curve of the bursts may be affected by enhanced accretion rate in the disc, or increased temperature of the neutron star., Comment: 12 pages, 11 figures, accepted by MNRAS

After 34 years, the black-hole candidate EXO 1846-031 went into outburst again in 2019. We investigate its spectral properties in the hard intermediate and the soft states with NuSTAR and Insight-HXMT. A reflection component has been detected in the two spectral states but possibly originating from different illumination spectra: in the intermediate state, the illuminating source is attributed to a hard coronal component, which has been commonly observed in other X-ray binaries, whereas in the soft state the reflection is probably produced by the disk self-irradiation. Both cases support EXO 1846-031 as a low inclination system of ~40 degrees. An absorption line is clearly detected at ~7.2 keV in the hard intermediate state, corresponding to a highly ionized disk wind (log {\xi} > 6.1) with a velocity up to 0.06c. Meanwhile, quasi-simultaneous radio emissions have been detected before and after the X-rays, implying the co-existence of disk winds and jets in this system. Additionally, the observed wind in this source is potentially driven by magnetic forces. The absorption line disappeared in the soft state and a narrow emission line appeared at ~6.7 keV on top of the reflection component, which may be evidence for disk winds, but data with the higher spectral resolution are required to examine this., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

Binary systems with a neutron-star primary accreting from a companion star display variability in the X-ray band on time scales ranging from years to milliseconds. With frequencies of up to ~1300 Hz, the kilohertz quasi-periodic oscillations (kHz QPOs) represent the fastest variability observed from any astronomical object. The sub-millisecond time scale of this variability implies that the kHz QPOs are produced in the accretion flow very close to the surface of the neutron star, providing a unique view of the dynamics of matter under the influence of some of the strongest gravitational fields in the Universe. This offers the possibility to probe some of the most extreme predictions of General Relativity, such as dragging of inertial frames and periastron precession at rates that are sixteen orders of magnitude faster than those observed in the solar system and, ultimately, the existence of a minimum distance at which a stable orbit around a compact object is possible. We used two XMM-Newton and six Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer (NICER) observations to investigate the fractional rms amplitude of the millihertz quasi-periodic oscillations (mHz QPOs) in the neutron-star low-mass X-ray binary 4U 1636-53. We studied, for the first time, the fractional rms amplitude of the mHz QPOs vs. energy in 4U 1636-53 down to 0.2 keV. We find that, as the energy increases from 0.2 keV to 3 keV, the rms amplitude of the mHz QPOs increases, different from the decreasing trend that has been previously observed above 3 keV. This finding has not yet been predicted by any current theoretical model, however, it provides an important observational feature to speculate whether a newly discovered mHz oscillation originates from the marginally stable nuclear burning process on the neutron star surface., Comment: Published in ApJ, 10 pages, 5 figures

We study the evolution of the temporal properties of MAXI 1820+070 during the 2018 outburst in its hard state from MJD 58190 to 58289 with Insight-HXMT in a broad energy band 1-150 keV. We find different behaviors of the hardness ratio, the fractional rms and time lag before and after MJD 58257, suggesting a transition occurred at around this point. The observed time lags between the soft photons in the 1-5 keV band and the hard photons in higher energy bands, up to 150 keV, are frequency-dependent: the time lags in the low-frequency range, 2-10 mHz, are both soft and hard lags with a timescale of dozens of seconds but without a clear trend along the outburst; the time lags in the high-frequency range, 1-10 Hz, are only hard lags with a timescale of tens of milliseconds; first increase until around MJD 58257 and decrease after this date. The high-frequency time lags are significantly correlated to the photon index derived from the fit to the quasi-simultaneous NICER spectrum in the 1-10 keV band. We present a systematic analysis of the phase lags associated with the type-C QPOs in GRS 1915+105 using RXTE data. Our sample comprises of 620 RXTE observations with type-C QPOs ranging from ~0.4 Hz to ~6.3 Hz. Based on our analysis, we confirm that the QPO phase lags decrease with QPO frequency, and change sign from positive to negative at a QPO frequency of ~2 Hz. In addition, we find that the slope of this relation is significantly different between QPOs below and above 2 Hz. The relation between the QPO lags and QPO rms can be well fitted with a broken line: as the QPO lags go from negative to positive, the QPO rms first increases, reaching its maximum at around zero lag, and then decreases. The phase-lag behaviour of the subharmonic of the QPO is similar to that of the QPO fundamental, where the subharmonic lags decrease with subharmonic frequency and change sign from positive to negative at a subharmonic frequency of ~1 Hz; on the contrary, the second harmonic of the QPO shows a quite different phase-lag behaviour, where all the second harmonics show hard lags that remain more or less constant. For both the QPO and its (sub)harmonics, the slope of the lag-energy spectra shows a similar evolution with frequency as the average phase lags. This suggests that the lag-energy spectra drives the average phase lags. We present the results of spectral analysis of the galactic black-hole binary MAXI J1659--152 in the rising phase of the outburst that lasted for about 65 days starting on 2010 September 25. The presence of a broad Fe line, verified by Monte-Carlo simulations, and coverage of a wide energy band by utilizing the combined spectral capabilities of XMM-Newton/EPIC-pn and RXTE/PCA allowed us to use a combination of reflection spectroscopy and continuum fitting methods to estimate the spin of the black hole. We explored the entire parameter range allowed by the present uncertainties on black-hole mass, inclination, and distance as well as the accretion rate. We show that for about 95 percentage of parameter space and very reasonable upper limits on mass accretion rate, the spin of the black hole has to be negative. Inverse Compton scattering dominates the high energy part of the spectra of neutron star (NS) low mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs). It has been proposed that inverse Compton scattering also drives the radiative properties of kilohertz quasi periodic oscillations (kHz QPOs). In this work, we construct a model that predicts the energy dependence of the rms amplitude and time lag of the kHz QPOs. Using this model, we fit the rms amplitude and time lag energy spectra of the lower kHz QPO in the NS LMXB 4U 1636-53 over 11 frequency intervals of the QPO and report three important findings: (i) A medium that extends 1-8 km above the NS surface is required to fit the data; this medium can be sustained by the balance between gravity and radiation pressure, without forcing any equilibrium condition. (ii) We predict a time delay between the oscillating NS temperature, due to feedback, and the oscillating electron temperature of the medium which, with the help of phase resolved spectroscopy, can be used as a probe of the geometry and the feedback mechanism. (iii) We show that the observed variability as a function of QPO frequency is mainly driven by the oscillating electron temperature of the medium. This provides strong evidence that the Comptonising medium in LMXBs significantly affects, if not completely drives, the radiative properties of the lower kHz QPOs regardless of the nature of the dynamical mechanism that produces the QPO frequencies., Comment: 20 pages, 9 figures

We investigate the frequency and amplitude of the millihertz quasi-periodic oscillations (mHz QPOs) in the neutron-star low-mass X-ray binary (NS LMXB) 4U 1636-53 using Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer observations. We find that no mHz QPOs appear when the source is in the hard spectral state. We also find that there is no significant correlation between the frequency and the fractional rms amplitude of the mHz QPOs. Notwithstanding, for the first time, we find that the absolute RMS amplitude of the mHz QPOs is insensitive to the parameter Sa, which measures the position of the source in the colour-colour diagram and is usually assumed to be an increasing function of mass accretion rate. This finding indicates that the transition from marginally stable burning to stable burning or unstable burning could happen very rapidly since, before the transition, the mHz QPOs do not gradually decay as the rate further changes., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ, 9 pages, 8 figures

We present for the neutron-star low-mass X-ray binary 4U 1636$-$53, and for the first time for any source of kilohertz quasi-periodic oscillations (kHz QPOs), the two-dimensional behaviour of the fractional rms amplitude of the kHz QPOs in the parameter space defined by QPO frequency and photon energy. We find that the rms amplitude of the lower kHz QPO increases with energy up to $\sim12$ keV and then decreases at higher energies, while the rms amplitude of the upper kHz QPO either continues increasing or levels off at high energies. The rms amplitude of the lower kHz QPO increases and then decreases with frequency, peaking at $\sim 760$ Hz, while the amplitude of the upper kHz QPO decreases with frequency, with a local maximum at around $\sim 770$ Hz, and is consistent with becoming zero at the same QPO frequency, $\sim1400$ Hz, in all energy bands, thus constraining the neutron-star mass at $M_{NS} \leq 1.6 M_{\odot}$, under the assumption that this QPO reflects the Keplerian frequency at the inner edge of the accretion disc. We show that the slope of the rms energy spectrum is connected to the changing properties of the kHz QPOs in different energy bands as its frequencies change. Finally, we discuss a possible mechanism responsible for the radiative properties of the kHz QPOs and, based on a model in which the QPO arises from oscillations in a Comptonising cloud of hot electrons, we show that the properties of the kHz QPOs can constrain the thermodynamic properties of the inner accretion flow.

We analysed an XMM-Newton plus a simultaneous Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer observation and a separate Suzaku observation of the neutron-star low-mass X-ray binary 4U 1728-34. We fitted the X-ray spectra with the self-consistent reflection model relxill. We found that the inclination angle of 4U 1728-34 is 49 degrees, consistent with the upper limit of 60 degrees deduced from the absence of eclipses or dips in this source. The inclination angle in the fit of the XMM-Newton/RXTE observation is larger than 85 degrees, which may be due to the possible calibration issues of the PN instrument in timing mode. We also found that the thermal emission from the accretion disc is not significant. This could be explained either by the relatively high column density of the interstellar medium along the line of sight to the source, which decreases the number of soft disc photons, or if most of the soft thermal photons from the disc are reprocessed in the corona. The ionisation parameter derived from the fits is larger than the value predicted in the framework of the standard reflection model, wherein the disc is irradiated by an X-ray source above the compact object. This inconsistency suggests that irradiation from the neutron star and its boundary layer may play an important role in the ionisation of the accretion disc, and hence in the reflection component in this source., Comment: 11 pages, 3 figures, accepted by MNRAS for publication

We studied five XMM-Newton observations of the neutron-star binary 4U 1728$-$34 covering the hard, intermediate and soft spectral states. By jointly fitting the spectra with several reflection models, we obtained an inclination angle of 25$-$53$\deg$ and an iron abundance up to 10 times the solar. From the fits with reflection models, we found that the fluxes of the reflection and the Comptonised components vary inconsistently; since the latter is assumed to be the illuminating source, this result possibly indicates the contribution of the neutron star surface/boundary layer to the disc reflection. As the source evolved from the relatively soft to the intermediate state, the disc inner radius decreased, opposite to the prediction of the standard accretion disc model. We also explore the possible reasons why the supersolar iron abundance is required by the data and found that this high value is probably caused by the absence of the hard photons in the XMM-Newton data., Comment: 14 pages, 6 figures
