Tool selection is relevant because a wide variety of materials exhibit different machinability behaviors. Tool life during manufacturing is commonly associated with productivity. Insert developers have been using coatings on cutting tools to enhance their performance, with chemical vapor deposition (CVD) and physical vapor deposition (PVD) being the two most used techniques. This study analyzed the cutting tool wear mechanism by machining AISI D2 steel using two different inserts of TiAlN/TiN PVD and TiCN/Al2O3 CVD as layers deposited on a carbide substrate. The two inserts were tested at three different cutting speeds, namely, low, medium, and high; these values were below the data suggested by the supplier catalog. The flank wear and rake face were analyzed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDX). The adhesion material, edge deformation, and abrasion were the main wear mechanisms before catastrophic damage occurred at the three different cutting speeds in the PVD cutting tool. Nevertheless, increasing the cutting speed reduced the tool life from 84% to 61% at high values compared to the medium values of PVD and CVD, respectively, where the medium value resulted in a balance between the material removal rate and tool life. The wear mechanism of the CVD tool was BUE and chipping; nevertheless, its craters were larger than those of the PVD. Compared to those configured for PVD, the CVD insert demonstrated the ability to machine D2 steel at twice the cutting speed with a workpiece surface roughness of 0.3 µm, in contrast to a variation of 0.6 to 0.15 µm with the PVD tool. Micro- and nano-structures of ZnO were synthesized by the vapor–solid method at 600, 700, and 800 °C in atmospheres of Ar and air, at atmospheric pressure. The structural characterization XRD shows that the nano-structures synthesized in air atmosphere at 600 °C, while diffraction peaks were found due to Zn because the presence of metallic Zn remains on the surface of the pellet. SEM images show that the morphologies range from nano-wires to micro-tubes. When cathodoluminescence is measured in micro-tubes, there is a shift of the near-band edge of the ZnO toward red; this is due to structural defects in the ZnO network. This result is corroborated with panchromatic CL measurements, which exhibit a difference in brightness between the micro-tubes. Furthermore, EDS measurements show an atomic quantity ratio of Zn:O that differs from the stoichiometric composition in the micro-tubes. The photocatalytic activity of three types of structures—nano-wires, micro-tubes, and micro-rods under UV irradiation using methylene blue as a model pollutant—were evaluated. Understanding the interactions in hybrid systems based on graphene and functional oxides is crucial to the applicability of graphene in real devices. Here, we present a study of the structural defects occurring on graphene during the early stages of the growth of CoO, tailored by the electronic coupling between graphene and the substrate in which it is supported: as received pristine graphene on polycrystalline copper (coupled), cleaned in ultra-high vacuum conditions to remove oxygen contamination, and graphene transferred to SiO2/Si substrates (decoupled). The CoO growth was performed at room temperature by thermal evaporation of metallic Co under a molecular oxygen atmosphere, and the early stages of the growth were investigated. On the decoupled G/SiO2/Si samples, with an initial low crystalline quality of graphene, the formation of a CoO wetting layer is observed, identifying the Stranski-Krastanov growth mode. In contrast, on coupled G/Cu samples, the Volmer-Weber growth mechanism is observed. In both sets of samples, the oxidation of graphene is low during the early stages of growth, increasing for the larger coverages. Furthermore, structural defects are developed in the graphene lattice on both substrates during the growth of CoO, which is significantly higher on decoupled G/SiO2/Si samples mainly for higher CoO coverages. When approaching the full coverage on both substrates, the CoO islands coalesce to form a continuous CoO layer with strip-like structures with diameters ranging between 70 and 150 nm. Microorganisms, including potential pathogens, can colonise plastic surfaces in aquatic environments. This study investigates the colonisation of plastic pellets by Escherichia coli (E. coli) as a proxy for faecal pathogens in aquatic environments. Plastic pellets from a polluted beach were placed in seawater aquaria spiked with E. coli. Diverse bacteria, primarily from the Proteobacteria phylum, rapidly colonised the pellets within 24 h, with notable species known for plastic or hydrocarbon degradation. Over 26 days, biofilms formed on the plastic surfaces, reaching bacterial populations of up to 6.8·105 gene copies (gc) of the 16S rRNA mm−2. E. coli, was detected in the pellets for up to 7 days using culture methods, exhibiting varying attachment densities regardless of source or environmental factors. The study highlights plastic biofilms as reservoirs for E. coli, contributing to the survival and persistence of faecal bacteria in aquatic systems. These findings deepen our understanding of the risks associated with plastic pollution in marine settings, offering insights into the behaviour of faecal indicators and their implications for water quality assessments, while providing valuable information on potential pathogen dissemination within plastic‐associated microbial communities. The assessment of photovoltaic devices, which convert light energy into electricity, has become significantly more relevant due to the aspiration to reduce pollution on a global scale. In this context, the pursuit of optimizing the efficiency of converting light energy into electrical energy involves exhaustive studies and structural analyses of solar cells, all directed toward achieving this goal. This study introduces a research proposal aimed at analyzing the losses associated with series resistance (Rs). The analysis takes into account each component comprising this resistance, proposing a network of resistances that precisely models each of these elements. The aforementioned research focused on simple-structured crystalline silicon cells. During this investigation, the junction depth (xj) of the n-p materials was varied, with the aim of achieving efficiencies in the range of 12%. However, in the pursuit of this desired efficiency, a significant impact on series resistance was observed when analyzing the I-V curves of the cells obtained in each manufacturing process.
