AbstractHypoxia may promote tumor progression, and hypoxically altered noncoding RNA (ncRNA) expression may play a role in metastasis. Canine oral melanoma (COM) frequently metastasizes, and ncRNA expression under hypoxia may be clinically significant. We aimed to elucidate ncRNA fragments whose expression is altered by hypoxia in COM-derived primary KMeC and metastatic LMeC cell lines using next-generation sequencing to validate these results in qRT-PCR, and then compare expression between metastatic and non-metastatic COM. The NGS analysis and subsequent qRT-PCR validation were performed using hypoxic and normoxic KMeC and LMeC cells, and clinical samples [tumor tissue, plasma, and plasma-derived extracellular vesicles] obtained from dogs with metastatic or non-metastatic melanoma were analyzed with qRT-PCR. Y RNA was significantly decreased in metastatic LMeC cells versus primary KMeC cells in hypoxic and normoxic conditions. The expression of Y RNA was decreased in dogs with metastatic melanoma versus those with non-metastatic melanoma for all clinical sample types, reflecting the pattern found with hypoxia. Mosquitoes are known vectors that transmit deadly diseases to millions of people across the globe. The reliance on synthetic insecticides has been the sole way to combat mosquito vectors for decades. In recent years, the extensive use of conventional insecticides in mosquito suppression has led to significant pesticide resistance and serious human health hazards. In this light, investigating the potential application of biorational compounds for vector management has drawn significant attention. We, hereby, evaluated the efficacy of three microbial derivative biorational insecticides, abamectin, spinosad, and buprofezin, and two botanical oils, neem (Azadirachta indica A. Juss) and karanja oil (Pongamia pinnata Linn.) against the Culex quinquefasciatus under laboratory conditions. The fourth-instar C. quinquefasciatus larvae were exposed to different concentrations of the selected larvicides and lethality was estimated based on LC50 and LT50 with Probit analysis. All larvicides showed concentration-dependent significant effects on survival and demonstrated larvicidal activity against C. quinquefasciatus larvae. However, abamectin exerted the highest toxicity (LC50 = 10.36 ppm), exhibited statistically significant effects on C. quinquefasciatus larval mortality, followed by spinosad (LC50 = 21.32 ppm) and buprofezin (LC50 = 56.34 ppm). Abamectin caused larval mortality ranged from 30.00 to 53.33 % and 53.00–70.00 % at 06 and 07 h after treatment (HAT), respectively. In the case of botanicals, karanja oil (LC50 = 216.61 ppm) was more lethal (more than 1.5 times) and had a shorter lethal time than neem oil (LC50 = 330.93 ppm) and showed a classic pattern of relationship between concentrations and mortality over time. Overall, the present study highlighted the potential of deploying new generation biorational pesticides and botanicals in mosquito vector control programs.

Hypoxia contributes to tumor progression and metastasis, and hypoxically dysregulated RNA molecules may, thus, be implicated in poor outcomes. Canine oral melanoma (COM) has a particularly poor prognosis, and some hypoxia-mediated miRNAs are known to exist in this cancer; however, equivalent data on other hypoxically dysregulated non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs) are lacking. Accordingly, we aimed to elucidate non-miRNA ncRNAs that may be mediated by hypoxia, targeting primary-site and metastatic COM cell lines and clinical COM tissue samples in next-generation sequencing (NGS), with subsequent qPCR validation and quantification in COM primary and metastatic cells and plasma and extracellular vesicles (EVs) for any identified ncRNA of interest. The findings suggest that a number of non-miRNA ncRNA species are hypoxically up- or downregulated in COM. We identified one ncRNA, the long ncRNA fragment ENSCAFT00000084705.1, as a molecule of interest due to its consistent downregulation in COM tissues, hypoxically and normoxically cultured primary and metastatic cell lines, when compared to the oral tissues from healthy dogs. However, this molecule was undetectable in plasma and plasma EVs, suggesting that its expression may be tumor tissue-specific, and it has little potential as a biomarker. Here, we provide evidence of hypoxic transcriptional dysregulation for ncRNAs other than miRNA in COM for the first time and suggest that ncRNA ENSCAFT00000084705.1 is a molecule of interest for future research on the role of the transcriptome in the hypoxia-mediated progression of this aggressive cancer.

The fabrication of macrostructures based on carbon nanostructures (CNS), such as CNS sheets, while maintaining the nanoscale mechanical properties of CNS, poses a significant technological and fundamental challenge. The presence of voids in the structure of CNS sheets significantly impacts their mechanical and electrical reliabilities. This study presents the fabrication of high-strength CNS (carbon nanostructures) sheets achieved through the mechanical densification of CNS sheets produced via the filtration process. Utilizing the filtration process as a potentially scalable and cost-efficient method reliably enhances the mechanical properties of CNS sheets. Within these CNS sheets, carbon nanostructures are densely stacked into macroscopically layered films, reducing voids, and enhancing mechanical properties. These CNS sheets hold promise for various applications, including electromagnetic interference shielding, electronics, energy storage, heat dissipation, among others. The CNS sheets obtained through the densification of CNS layers are analyzed to investigate how surfactant concentration and sonication time impact their mechanical properties. These high-strength CNS sheets, with improved mechanical properties, open doors to diverse applications ranging from electronics to energy storage, promising innovation in multiple fields.

Abstract General anesthetics and neuromuscular blockers are used together during surgery to stabilize patients in an unconscious state. Anesthetics act mainly by potentiating inhibitory ion channels and inhibiting excitatory ion channels, with the net effect of dampening nervous system excitability. Neuromuscular blockers act by antagonizing nicotinic acetylcholine receptors at the motor endplate; these excitatory ligand-gated ion channels are also inhibited by general anesthetics. The mechanisms by which anesthetics and neuromuscular blockers inhibit nicotinic receptors are poorly understood but underlie safe and effective surgeries. Here we took a direct structural approach to define how a commonly used anesthetic and two neuromuscular blockers act on a muscle-type nicotinic receptor. We discover that the intravenous anesthetic etomidate binds at an intrasubunit site in the transmembrane domain and stabilizes a non-conducting, desensitized-like state of the channel. The depolarizing neuromuscular blocker succinylcholine also stabilizes a desensitized channel but does so through binding to the classical neurotransmitter site. Rocuronium binds in this same neurotransmitter site but locks the receptor in a resting, non-conducting state. Together, this study reveals a structural mechanism for how general anesthetics work on excitatory nicotinic receptors and further rationalizes clinical observations in how general anesthetics and neuromuscular blockers interact.

A field experiment was conducted at Bangladesh Agricultural University farm, Mymensingh, Bangladesh, during the Boro season, 2017 with six different K fertilizer rates: 0, 10, 20, 30, 40 and 50 kg ha-1 to determine the optimum rate of potassium (K) fertilization for the improved yield of a specific rice variety in the irrigated ecosystem under floodplain area. Compared with no K fertilizer, adding K increased the rice grain and straw yields significantly, with all other yield contributing components, except 1000-grain weight. The highest yield of grain (7.07 ton ha-1) and straw (8.48 ton ha-1) were recorded in recommended fertilizer dose (RFD) of NPS + 50kg K treatment, which were statistically identical with RFD of NPS + 40 kg K. Rice grain and straw yields due to the different treatments increased by 18.65% to 53.74% and 18.67% to 53.78%, respectively over control. K content and uptake through grain and straw were significantly influenced by applying different levels of K. These results specified that the use of 40 kg K ha-1 had better performance on the grain and straw yields. Therefore, we conclude that the application of 40 kg K ha-1 along with the RFD of NPS for BRRI dhan29 cultivation is the best option for higher yield in Old Brahmaputra Floodplain soil.

Research continues to improve the dye degradation performance of TiO2 nanoparticles (NPs) through doping, tailoring, or modifying the lattice structure. A series of Ca–TiO2 (Ca ions 0.5–2.0 wt%) photocatalysts prepared by wet impregnation method were studied for methylene blue (MB) degradation under UV-Vis irradiation, using different factors, including contact time, pH, initial dye concentration, and dosages. The photocatalyst samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX). Characterization results revealed the successful doping of Ca ion on the TiO2 surface, and Ti, O, and Ca were identified by EDX analysis as being present in the Ca-doped TiO2 sample. Calcium improved titania's charge separation capability, favoring the formation of more hydroxyl radicals during irradiation. Another important effect of Ca is the lowered bandgap energy of TiO2, which enhances the light absorption capacity into the visible regions. The photocatalytic performance varied with calcium ions content in the prepared catalysts, and a moderate amount showed the best activity. 1 wt% Ca–TiO2 exhibited a maximum MB degradation of 79.65 % with TOC removal of 52.36 % and followed the pseudo-first-order reactions kinetics with a rate constant of 0.0087 min−1. Notably, both the degradation performance and rate constant of 1 wt% Ca-TiO2 catalysts were much superior to pure TiO2 under the same reaction conditions. This finding suggests that Ca-TiO2 NPs could be a highly effective photocatalyst for the ecologically benign degradation of color compounds in textile wastewater.

The development of efficient, eco-friendly antimicrobial agents for air purification and disinfection addresses public health issues connected to preventing airborne pathogens. Herein, the antimicrobial activity of a nanoemulsion (control, 5%, 10%, and 15%) containing neem and lavender oils with polycaprolactone (PCL) was investigated against airborne bacteria, including Escherichia coli, Bacillus subtilis, and Staphylococcus aureus. Various parameters such as the physicochemical properties of the nanoemulsion, pH, droplet size, the polydispersity index (PDI), the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC), the minimum bacterial concentration (MBC), and the color measurement of the emulsion have been evaluated and optimized. Our results showed that the antimicrobial activity of PCL combined with neem and lavender oil was found to be the highest MIC and MBC against all tested bacteria. The droplet sizes for lavender oil are 21.86–115.15 nm, the droplet sizes for neem oil are 23.92–119.15 nm, and their combination is 25.97–50.22 nm. The range of pH and viscosity of nanoemulsions of various concentrations was found to be 5.8 to 6.6 pH and 0.372 to 2.101 cP. This study highlights the potential of nanotechnology in harnessing the antimicrobial properties of natural essential oils, paving the way for innovative and sustainable solutions in the fight against bacterial contamination.

Background: A hospital’s operating theater service system is a large-scale, complicated system that must be carefully managed to offer the best possible results for its patients. Unlike other industries such as manufacturing and logistics, system dynamics (SD) methodologies are not extensively applied in hospital operating theaters. This study deals with the future development and possible future scenarios for hospital operating rooms in Bangladesh. Methods: Due to demographic dynamics and demographic processes, increased pressures on hospital care are expected in Bangladesh. The SD model anticipates possible future scenarios, reconciles service capacities and the variability of patient demand, and reduces patient congestion and waiting times in the hospital area. This study introduces a causal loop diagram to show a causal link between the hospital operating theater system variables. It also introduces a stock flow diagram to understand the dynamic behavior of the system. Results: The model validation testing reports that in extreme conditions, such as a 50% reduction in the patient arrival rate, the model is valid and runs as usual. Conclusions: This first work of SD modeling for hospital operating theater systems can help healthcare managers, decision makers, or researchers of any responsibility level make better predictions in order to reduce patient waiting times and backlogs and make appropriate decisions.

As the resolution revolution in CryoEM expands to encompass all manner of macromolecular complexes, an important new frontier is the implementation of cryogenic time resolved EM (cryoTREM). Biological macromolecular complexes are dynamic systems that undergo conformational changes on timescales from microseconds to minutes. Understanding the dynamic nature of biological changes is critical to understanding function. To realize the full potential of CryoEM, time resolved methods will be integral in coupling static structures to dynamic functions. Here, we present an LED-based photo-flash system as a core part of the sample preparation phase in CryoTREM. The plug-and-play system has a wide range of operational parameters, is low cost and ensures uniform irradiation and minimal heating of the sample prior to plunge freezing. The complete design including electronics and optics, manufacturing, control strategies and operating procedures are discussed for the Thermo Scientific™ Vitrobot and Leica™ EM GP2 plunge freezers. Possible adverse heating effects on the biological sample are also addressed through theoretical as well as experimental studies.

The disclosure of insect incidence simultaneously with meteorological parameters is critical for developing management methods in the rice field. The number of hazardous and helpful insects, as well as meteorological conditions, were gathered on a daily basis for three years to determine when the insect population was at its peak. Throughout the rice seasons, rice yellow stem borer, caseworm, green leafhopper, field cricket, carabid beetle, and ladybird beetle were observed to be prominent. The Aman season (July–December) has the most insects, and the transition time between Boro (December–May) and Aus (April–August) has been identified as critical for the largest abundance of insect population. Maximum temperature is favorably and strongly associated to insect population abundance, but rainfall is adversely connected to insect population reduction. In the instance of the Aus season, the optimal maximum, minimum, and mean temperatures were 31°C–35°C, 20.43°C–28.32°C, and 25.35°C–32.15°C, respectively. Whereas for Aman, temperatures ranging from 30.76°C to 36.04°C, 20.42°C–28.40°C, and 25.81°C–31.55°C, respectively, and for Boro, temperatures ranging from 19.65°C to 35.7°C, 15.66°C–26.10°C, and 17.16°C–29.96°C, respectively, have been shown to be most conducive to insect abundance. In addition to the environmental criteria mentioned above, rainfall of less than 20 mm in Aus and Aman and less than10 mm in Boro season are beneficial for the maximum insect prevalence. The current study's findings will help researchers and farmers to make early warning decisions and to develop crop advisories based on meteorological parameters to manage insects in rice fields.

This research addresses the challenge of determining the optimal parameters for the selective laser sintering (SLS) process using thermoplastic polyurethane elastomer (TPU) flexa black powder to achieve high-quality SLS parts. This study focuses on two key printing process parameters, namely layer thickness and the laser power ratio, and evaluates their impact on four output responses: density, hardness, modulus of elasticity, and time required to produce the parts. The primary impacts and correlations of the input factors on the output responses are evaluated using response surface methodology (RSM). A particular response optimizer is used to find the optimal settings of input variables. Additionally, the rationality of the model is verified through an analysis of variance (ANOVA). The research identifies the optimal combination of process parameters as follows: a 0.11 mm layer thickness and a 1.00 laser power ratio. The corresponding predicted values of the four responses are 152.63 min, 96.96 Shore-A, 2.09 MPa, and 1.12 g/cm3 for printing time, hardness, modulus of elasticity, and density, respectively. These responses demonstrate a compatibility of 66.70% with the objective function. An experimental validation of the predicted values was conducted and the actual values obtained for printing time, hardness, modulus of elasticity, and density at the predicted input process parameters are 159.837 min, 100 Shore-A, 2.17 MPa, and 1.153 g/cm3, respectively. The errors between the predicted and experimental values for each response (time, hardness, modulus of elasticity, and density) were found to be 4.51%, 3.04%, 3.69%, and 2.69%, respectively. These errors are all below 5%, indicating the adequacy of the model. This study also comprehensively describes the influence of process parameters on the responses, which can be helpful for researchers and industry practitioners in setting process parameters of similar SLS operations.

Electrically as well as thermally conductive lubricants have drawn considerable attention and are an emerging research topic because they have unique advantages and advanced lubrication performance over traditional lubricants such as corrosion protection and efficient heat dissipation. For instance, some components of electric vehicles (EVs) such as bearings, seals, pads and gears require conductive lubricants to avoid premature failure and electromagnetic interference (EMI) problems due to induced shaft voltages and currents. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the recent developments in conductive lubricants. The review focuses on the important aspects to enhance the thermal and electrical conductivities as well as the tribological behavior (COF, and wear rate) of conductive solid, semisolid, and liquid lubricants. The lubricants that are electrically and thermally conductive with superior tribological performances have been identified through extensive literature review and presented in tabular form. This review summarizes the effect of various additives used to improve the conductive properties of the lubricants, such as polyalphaolefin oil, hydraulic oil, paraffin oil, and mineral oil. Furthermore, the review discusses the lubricating mechanism of conductive solid and liquid lubricants to facilitate a deeper understanding. Finally, the future perspectives and the research directions for conductive lubricants are also addressed.

This review article discusses the potential of using metal-doped TiO2 as a photocatalyst for dye degradation in water. TiO2 is a promising photocatalyst but is limited due to its fast electron-hole recombination rate and vast bandgap energy. Metal dopants have enhanced the photocatalytic activity of TiO2, especially noble metal doping, due to the synergistic effects between the metal dopants and TiO2. The review summarizes experimental studies on photocatalytic dye degradation using metal-doped TiO2 and compares the degradation performance between doped and undoped TiO2. The authors emphasize the importance of understanding the interaction between metal dopants and TiO2 to improve the dye degradation activity and stability of metal-doped TiO2. The article highlights the optimum dopant concentration and preparation methods that can improve the textural or surface properties of doped TiO2 and enhance dye degradation capacity.

ABSTRACT Streptococcosis is one of the major threats to Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) in most regions of the world. Recently, Enterococcus faecalis has been widely reported to be involved in streptococcosis in O. niloticus in Asia and Africa. This study aimed to isolate beneficial marine bacteria to evaluate their effects on growth, hematological parameters, nonspecific immunity, the gut bacteriome, and streptococcosis prevention efficacy in O. niloticus. A total of 36 marine soil bacteria were isolated, and in vitro screening was conducted to determine their antibacterial activities against fish pathogens. Two antagonistic bacteria were identified based on 16S rRNA gene sequencing, Bacillus haynesii CD223 and Advenella mimigardefordensis SM421. These bacteria were incorporated into fish feed and fed to O. niloticus for 90 days. The application of these strains via incorporation into fish feed significantly promoted growth, improved hematological parameters and immunoglobulin M (IgM) levels, modulated the gut bacteriome by reducing the load of pathogenic Enterococcus spp., and developed disease prevention efficacy in O. niloticus. Furthermore, in vivo assays revealed that the inclusion of extracellular products (ECPs) (at 250 μg mL−1) of CD223 and SM421 with feed significantly enhanced the rate of survival (100%) of O. niloticus from streptococcosis compared to the controls (only 30%). The ECPs of these bacteria also prevented 90 to 100% of fish from developing streptococcosis. These strains could be promising for safe use in O. niloticus farming to prevent and control the emergence of streptococcosis caused by E. faecalis. IMPORTANCE Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) is one of the most economically important cultured fish species throughout the world. Streptococcosis is a significant threat to global Nile tilapia farming. Enterococcus faecalis has recently emerged as an important pathogen of streptococcosis in Asia and Africa. The application of antibiotics and probiotics and vaccination are the major ways to combat streptococcosis. However, the extensive use of antibiotics leads to the development of antibiotic resistance in pathogenic as well as environmental bacteria, which is a great threat to public health. There is no study on preventing streptococcosis caused by E. faecalis using beneficial bacteria. For the first time, the present study demonstrated that two marine bacteria, Bacillus haynesii strain CD223 and Advenella mimigardefordensis strain SM421, have great potential for controlling streptococcosis in Nile tilapia. These bacteria also enhanced the growth, improved hematological parameters and IgM levels, and positively modulated the gut bacteriome of Nile tilapia.

A study was conducted to investigate the farmers’ response on the performance of two specific Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University (BSMRAU) technologies viz. BU dhan1 and BU Hybrid lau1. In this connection, two districts of Northern Bangladesh were considered with 80 farmer respondents selected by simple random sampling technique to examine their responses on technology performance, adoption, impacts, associated limitations with possible suggestions and knowledge gap. Findings from this study reveal that the BU dhan1 had a high adoption level. In contrast, BU Hybrid lau1 had a low level of adoption. BU dhan1 performed well with low complexities when it was cultivated in the field. The study further provides information that majority farmers showed low to moderate knowledge gap in cultivating both of these technologies. Moreover, dried empty grains and less market value were listed as major constraints faced by BU dhan1 growers, while BU Hybrid lau1 growers suffered from severe virus attack during cultivation. Provisions of sufficient disease-free seed supply and proper training facilities were suggested by all the farmers interviewed.

Objective To estimate the proportion of SARS-CoV-2 and influenza virus coinfection among severe acute respiratory infection (SARI) cases-patients during the first wave of COVID-19 pandemic in Bangladesh.Design Descriptive study.Setting Nine tertiary level hospitals across Bangladesh.Participants Patients admitted as SARI (defined as cases with subjective or measured fever of ≥38 C° and cough with onset within the last 10 days and requiring hospital admission) case-patients.Primary and secondary outcomes Proportion of SARS-CoV-2 and influenza virus coinfection and proportion of mortality among SARI case-patients.Results We enrolled 1986 SARI case-patients with a median age: 28 years (IQR: 1.2–53 years), and 67.6% were male. Among them, 285 (14.3%) were infected with SARS-CoV-2; 175 (8.8%) were infected with the influenza virus, and five (0.3%) were coinfected with both viruses. This review article summarizes the progress of research on carbon nanomaterial-based lubricants witnessed in recent years. Carbon nanomaterials, such as graphene, carbon nanotubes (CNTs), fullerenes and carbon nanostructures, are at the center of current tribological research on attaining superior lubrication performance. The development of nanomaterial-based solid lubricants, lubricant additives and bulk materials and the related issues in their processing, characterization and applications as well as their tribological performance (coefficient of friction and wear rate) are listed in a structured tabulated form. Firstly, regarding nanomaterial-based solid lubricants, this study reveals that carbon nanomaterials such as graphite, graphene, graphene-based coatings and diamond-like carbon (DLC)-based coatings increase different tribological properties of solid lubricants. Secondly, this study summarizes the influence of graphene, carbon nanotubes, fullerene, carbon nanodiamonds, carbon nano-onions, carbon nanohorns and carbon spheres when they are used as an additive in lubricants. Thirdly, a structured tabulated overview is presented for the use of carbon nanomaterial-reinforced bulk material as lubricants, where graphene, carbon nanotubes and carbon nanodiamonds are used as reinforcement. Additionally, the lubricity mechanism and superlubricity of carbon nanomaterial-based lubricants is also discussed. The impact of carbon nanotubes and graphene on superlubricity is reviewed in detail. It is reported in the literature that graphene is the most prominent and widely used carbon nanomaterial in terms of all four regimes (solid lubricants, lubricating additives, bulk material reinforcement and superlubricity) for superior tribological properties. Furthermore, prospective challenges associated with lubricants based on carbon nanomaterials are identified along with future research directions.

BACKGROUND:Because of the rapid increase of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) and high burden of healthcare-related financial issues in Bangladesh, there is a concern that out-of-pocket (OOP) payments related to illnesses may become a major burden on household. It is crucial to understand what are the major illnesses responsible for high OPP at the household level to help policymakers prioritize key areas of actions to protect the household from 100% financial hardship for seeking health care as part of universal health coverage. OBJECTIVES:We first estimated the costs of illnesses among a population in urban Bangladesh, and then assessed the household financial burden associated with these illnesses. METHOD:A cross-sectional survey of 1593 randomly selected households was carried out in Bangladesh (urban area of Rajshahi city), in 2011. Catastrophic expenditure was estimated at 40% threshold of household capacity to pay. We employed the Bayesian two-stage hurdle model and Bayesian logistic regression model to estimate age-adjusted average cost and the incidence of household financial catastrophe for each illness, respectively. RESULTS:Overall, approximately 45% of the population of Bangladesh had at least one episode of illness. The age-sex-adjusted average medical expenses and catastrophic health care expenditure among the households were TK 621 and 8%, respectively. Households spent the highest amount of money 7676.9 on paralysis followed by liver disease (TK 2695.4), injury (TK 2440.0), mental disease (TK 2258.0), and tumor (TK 2231.2). These diseases were also responsible for higher incidence of financial catastrophe. Our study showed that 24% of individuals who suffered typhoid incurred catastrophic expenditure followed by liver disease (12.3%), tumor (12.1%), heart disease (8.4%), injury (7.9%), mental disease (7.9%), cataract (7.1%), and paralysis (6.5%). CONCLUSION:The study findings suggest that chronic illnesses were responsible for high costs and high catastrophic expenditures in Bangladesh. Effective risk pooling mechanism might reduce household financial burden related to illnesses. Chronic illness related to NCDs is the major cause of OOP. It is also important to consider prioritizing vulnerable population by subsidizing the high health care cost for some of the chronic illnesses.

BackgroundIn Bangladesh, about 80% of healthcare is provided by the private sector. Although free diagnosis and care is offered in the public sector, only half of the estimated number of people with tuberculosis are diagnosed, treated, and notified to the national program. Private sector engagement strategies often have been small scale and time limited. We evaluated a Social Enterprise Model combining external funding and income generation at three tuberculosis screening centres across the Dhaka Metropolitan Area for diagnosing and treating tuberculosis.Methods and findingsThe model established three tuberculosis screening centres across Dhaka Metropolitan Area that carried the icddr,b brand and offered free Xpert MTB/RIF tests to patients visiting the screening centres for subsidized, digital chest radiographs from April 2014 to December 2017. A network of private and public health care providers, and community recommendation was formed for patient referral. No financial incentives were offered to physicians for referrals. Revenues from radiography were used to support screening centres' operation. Tuberculosis patients could choose to receive treatment from the private or public sector. Between 2014 and 2017, 1,032 private facilities networked with 8,466 private providers were mapped within the Dhaka Metropolitan Area. 64, 031 patients with TB symptoms were referred by the private providers, public sector and community residents to the three screening centres with 80% coming from private providers. 4,270 private providers made at least one referral. Overall, 10,288 pulmonary and extra-pulmonary tuberculosis cases were detected and 7,695 were bacteriologically positive by Xpert, corresponding to 28% of the total notifications in Dhaka Metropolitan Area.ConclusionThe model established a network of private providers who referred individuals with presumptive tuberculosis without financial incentives to icddr,b's screening centres, facilitating a quarter of total tuberculosis notifications in Dhaka Metropolitan Area. Scaling up this approach may enhance national and international tuberculosis response.

Composite steel–concrete slab is a floor typology widely used for building applications. Their design is usually governed by serviceability limit state requirements associated with the time-dependent response of the concrete. In this context, this paper presents a state-of-the-art review of research carried out to date on the long-term behavior of composite steel–concrete slabs. The particularity of this time-dependent response relies on the fact that the concrete cannot dry from the underside of the slab due to the presence of the profiled sheeting while it can dry from its upper surface. In the first part of the paper, a review of the work carried out on the identification of the time-dependent response of the concrete is presented by considering the peculiarities that occur due to the non-symmetric drying condition related to composite slabs. Particular attention is given to shrinkage effects and to the occurrence and influence of the non-uniform shrinkage gradient that develops in this form of construction over time. This is followed by the description and discussion of the experimental work performed on both simply-supported and continuous static configurations of composite slabs. In particular, the work published to date is summarized while highlighting the key parameters of the test samples and of the testing protocols adopted in the experiments. In the last part of the paper, available theoretical and design models proposed for the predictions of the shrinkage-induced behavior of composite slabs are presented and discussed.

To date, severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) has infected over 80 million people globally. We report a case series of five clinically and laboratory confirmed COVID-19 patients from Bangladesh who suffered a second episode of COVID-19 illness after 70 symptom-free days. The International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research, Bangladesh (icddr,b), is a leading public health research institution in South Asia. icddr, b staff were actively tested, treated and followed-up for COVID-19 by an experienced team of clinicians, epidemiologists, and virologists. From 21 March to 30 September 2020, 1370 icddr,b employees working at either the Dhaka (urban) or Matlab (rural) clinical sites were tested for COVID-19. In total, 522 (38%) were positive; 38% from urban Dhaka (483/1261) and 36% from the rural clinical site Matlab (39/109). Five patients (60% male with a mean age of 41 years) had real-time reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (rRT-PCR) diagnosed recurrence (reinfection) of SARS-CoV-2. All had mild symptoms except for one who was hospitalized. Though all cases reported fair risk perceptions towards COVID-19, all had potential exposure sources for reinfection. After a second course of treatment and home isolation, all patients fully recovered. Our findings suggest the need for COVID-19 vaccination and continuing other preventive measures to further mitigate the pandemic. An optimal post-recovery follow-up strategy to allow the safe return of COVID-19 patients to the workforce may be considered.

Tobacco use is a primary cause of many oral diseases and adverse oral conditions and it is a risk factor for oral cancer, periodontal diseases, congenital defects such as cleft lip and palate in children whose mother smokes during pregnancy. A cross sectional study was conducted among 190 adult tobacco users in Charpaterdoho Union, Madarganj Upazilla, Jamalpur District, during the period from July 2013 to December 2013 to assess the oral health status of the adult tobacco users in rural area of Bangladesh. Data were collectedby using pre tested interview administered questionnaire andto assess the oral health status intra oral examination was performed by a dental surgeon assisted by two trained and calibrated investigators. Both descriptive and inferential statistics has been used for analysis of data with the help of Statistical Package for Social Science SPSS (Version 21) software on the basis of different variables. The study result revealed that out of 190 respondents maximum 61 (32.1%) belongs to 18-28 years age group, majority 116 (61.1) % were male. Among the respondents tobacco used in different ways like cigarette, ‘Gul’, ‘Zorda’, betel leaf, ‘Sadapata’ consumption where cigarette was the commonly used form of tobacco and the least commonly used form of tobacco was betel leaf and ‘Sadapata’. In intra oral examination this study result revealed that around 50 (26%) respondents dentition condition was healthy, and 121 (63.7%) respondents had less than 25% decayed teeth, 115(60.5%) respondents had periodontitis, around less than three fourth 132 (69.5%)had gingivitis,almost all (95.3%) had dental deposition or plaque and 155 (81.6%) respond- ents had no functional prosthesis. In logistic regression analysis monthly family income level (p =.004) was significantly associated with oral health status when the adjusted with other variables (education, sex, age). Sex and age were not associated with oral health status. Exposure to tobacco is a signifi- cant, modifiable risk factor for different oral diseases, so the changing attitude can be occurred by giving adequate information and motivation to the mass people along with dental health education. Background Despite remarkable reduction in the prevalence of dental caries in developed countries, dental caries is still a highly prevalent disease among children in developing countries. Objectives To estimate the oral health status of children under five years of age by assessing decayed, missing and filled teeth (dmft) status of primary teeth along with their tooth cleaning and food habits. Materials and Methods This cross-sectional study on oral health status of children under five years of age was carried out among 107 children attending the Outpatient Department of Sapporo Dental College and Hospital, situated at Uttara, Dhaka. Data was collected both in English and Bengali with a pre-tested structured questionnaire and a checklist. Results Dental caries (d) was found in 69.2% of the children while missing (m) and filled (f) teeth were recorded in 14% and 21.5% of the children respectively. BackgroundThe marine epiphytic dinoflagellate genus Gambierdiscus produce toxins that cause ciguatera fish poisoning (CFP): one of the most significant seafood-borne illnesses associated with fish consumption worldwide. So far, occurrences of CFP incidents in Japan have been mainly reported in subtropical areas. A previous phylogeographic study of Japanese Gambierdiscus revealed the existence of two distinct phylotypes: Gambierdiscus sp. type 1 from subtropical and Gambierdiscus sp. type 2 from temperate areas. However, details of the genetic diversity and distribution for Japanese Gambierdiscus are still unclear, because a comprehensive investigation has not been conducted yet.Methods/principal findingA total of 248 strains were examined from samples mainly collected from western and southern coastal areas of Japan during 2006-2011. The SSU rDNA, the LSU rDNA D8-D10 and the ITS region were selected as genetic markers and phylogenetic analyses were conducted. The genetic diversity of Japanese Gambierdiscus was high since five species/phylotypes were detected: including two reported phylotypes (Gambierdiscus sp. type 1 and Gambierdiscus sp. type 2), two species of Gambierdiscus (G. australes and G. cf. yasumotoi) and a hitherto unreported phylotype Gambierdiscus sp. type 3. The distributions of type 3 and G. cf. yasumotoi were restricted to the temperate and the subtropical area, respectively. On the other hand, type 1, type 2 and G. australes occurred from the subtropical to the temperate area, with a tendency that type 1 and G. australes were dominant in the subtropical area, whereas type 2 was dominant in the temperate area. By using mouse bioassay, type 1, type 3 and G. australes exhibited mouse toxicities.Conclusions/significanceThis study revealed a surprising diversity of Japanese Gambierdiscus and the distribution of five species/phylotypes displayed clear geographical patterns in Japanese coastal areas. The SSU rDNA and the LSU rDNA D8-D10 as genetic markers are recommended for further use.

Purpose: Human resources (HR) management has encountered unforeseen obstacles and issues in recruiting, retaining, training and developing workforces under the "new normal" due to pandemic circumstances followed by the Russo-Ukrainian War and global economic turmoil. As the world is now well-equipped with technological advancements and internet-based connectivity, many pandemic disruptions have been avoided through rapid adaptation of technological systems. Despite the constructive outcomes of this contemporary approach to learning and development (L&D), this study explores the further depths of massive open online courses (MOOC) platform adoption in human resource development initiatives during pandemic times. Design/methodology/approach: A qualitative research approach was adopted to understand the employee and HR perspective on the changes in L&D approaches in organizations. To gather the primary data, respondents were divided into two clusters; different sets of questionnaires were developed for interview sessions. Findings: Results suggest that employee L&D was much more improvised with distance or online learning, including organizational e-learning systems and MOOC platforms. To accomplish their HR development goals, organizations went through significant transformations during the Coronavirus pandemic; organizational attempts to initiate online training and MOOC-based learning fostered positive results in employee capacity development, process improvement, employee engagement and motivation. Originality/value: This research will assist organizations in developing interactive training methods as an effective replacement for traditional training. Additionally, it will assist readers, practitioners and HR specialists in understanding how MOOCs are changing the L&D ecosystem.
