QMCPACK is an open source quantum Monte Carlo package for ab-initio electronic structure calculations. It supports calculations of metallic and insulating solids, molecules, atoms, and some model Hamiltonians. Implemented real space quantum Monte Carlo algorithms include variational, diffusion, and reptation Monte Carlo. QMCPACK uses Slater-Jastrow type trial wave functions in conjunction with a sophisticated optimizer capable of optimizing tens of thousands of parameters. The orbital space auxiliary field quantum Monte Carlo method is also implemented, enabling cross validation between different highly accurate methods. The code is specifically optimized for calculations with large numbers of electrons on the latest high performance computing architectures, including multicore central processing unit (CPU) and graphical processing unit (GPU) systems. We detail the program's capabilities, outline its structure, and give examples of its use in current research calculations. The package is available at http://www.qmcpack.org .

The ab-initio phase diagram of dense hydrogen is very sensitive to errors in the treatment of electronic correlation. Recently, it has been shown that the choice of the density functional has a large effect on the predicted location of both the liquid-liquid phase transition and the solid insulator-to-metal transition in dense hydrogen. To identify the most accurate functional for dense hydrogen applications, we systematically benchmark some of the most commonly used functionals using Quantum Monte Carlo. By considering several measures of functional accuracy, we conclude that the van der Waals and hybrid functionals significantly out perform LDA and PBE. We support these conclusions by analyzing the impact of functional choice on structural optimization in the molecular solid, and on the location of the liquid-liquid phase transition.

Solid atomic hydrogen is one of the simplest systems to undergo a metal-insulator transition. Near the transition, the electronic degrees of freedom become strongly correlated and their description provides a difficult challenge for theoretical methods. As a result, the order and density of the phase transition are still subject to debate. In this work we use diffusion quantum Monte Carlo to benchmark the transition between paramagnetic and anti-ferromagnetic body centered cubic atomic hydrogen in its ground state. We locate the density of the transition by computing the equation of state for these two phases and identify the phase transition order by computing the band gap near the phase transition. These benchmark results show that the phase transition is continuous and occurs at a Wigner-Seitz radius of $r_s=2.27(3) a_0$. In this work we compute subleading oscillating terms in the Renyi entropy of Fermi gases and Fermi liquids corresponding to $2k_F$-like oscillations. Our theoretical tools are the one dimensional formulation of Fermi liquid entanglement familiar from discussions of the logarithmic violation of the area law and quantum Monte Carlo calculations. The main result is a formula for the oscillating term for any region geometry and a spherical Fermi surface. We compare this term to numerical calculations of entanglement using the correlation function method and find excellent agreement. We also compare with quantum Monte Carlo data on interacting Fermi liquids where we also find excellent agreement up to moderate interaction strengths., Comment: 8 pages, 2 figures

We perform quantum Monte Carlo calculations to determine how the Renyi entropies, $S_n$, of the interacting Fermi liquid depend on Renyi order, $n$, and scale as a function of system size, $L$. Using the swap operator and an accurate Slater-Jastrow wave function, we compute Renyi entropies for spinless fermions interacting via the Coulomb and modified P\"{o}schl-Teller potentials across a range of correlation strengths. Our results show that interactions increase the Renyi entropies and increase the prefactor of their scaling laws. The relationships between Renyi entropies of different order $n$ are also modified. Additionally, we investigate the effect of the swap operator on the Fermi liquid wave function to determine the source of the $L\log L$ scaling form., Comment: 7 pages, 7 figures

Recent proposals of measuring bipartite Renyi entropy experimentally involve techniques that hold exactly for non-interacting quantum particles. Here we consider the difference between such measurements and the actual Renyi entropy for ground state fermion ab initio molecular systems. To calculate various entanglement measures we extended several different techniques for use with variational Monte Carlo, Hartree-Fock and quantum chemistry methods. Our results show that in systems with strong electron correlations the Renyi entropy may not be accurately determined with the proposed measurements. In addition, we find significant physical insight can be gained by calculating entanglement properties in molecular systems. We see that the Renyi entropy and the entanglement Hamiltonian encode information about the character of the covalent bonds in a molecular system and that such information may lead to better descriptions of bonded systems that have been traditionally hard to describe with standard techniques. In particular our results for the C$_{2}$ dimer suggests all eight valence electrons play a significant role in covalent bonding., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures

Quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) methods such as variational Monte Carlo and fixed node diffusion Monte Carlo depend heavily on the quality of the trial wave function. Although Slater-Jastrow wave functions are the most commonly used variational ansatz in electronic structure, more sophisticated wave-functions are critical to ascertaining new physics. One such wave function is the multiSlater-Jastrow wave function which consists of a Jastrow function multiplied by the sum of Slater determinants. In this paper we describe a method for working with these wavefunctions in QMC codes that is easy to implement, efficient both in computational speed as well as memory, and easily parallelized. The computational cost scales quadratically with particle number making this scaling no worse than the single determinant case and linear with the total number of excitations. We calculate the off-diagonal density matrix of the homogeneous electron gas at zero temperature using unbiased Reptation Monte Carlo for various densities and extrapolate the momentum distribution, and the kinetic and potential energies to the thermodynamic limit. Our results on the renormalization factor allows us to validate approximate G_0W_0 calculations concerning quasiparticle properties over a broad density region (1 <= r_s <= 10) and show that near the Fermi surface, vertex corrections and self-consistency aspects almost cancel each other out., Comment: 4 pages, 1 figure, references added

We present experimental and theoretical results on the momentum distribution and the quasiparticle renormalization factor in sodium. From an x-ray Compton-profile measurement of the valence-electron momentum density, we derive its discontinuity at the Fermi wavevector. This yields an accurate measure of the renormalization factor that we compare with quantum Monte Carlo and GW calculations performed both on crystalline sodium and on the homogeneous electron gas.
