The Review of the UK Constitution was an eighteen-month project assessing the functioning of the UK constitution resulting in a set of practical, innovative, and robust recommendations. This article draws out one theme from this research, the offer of Deliberative Mini Publics (DMPs) in the process of constitutional change in the UK. Using Marsh, Richards, and Smith's 'Asymmetric Power Model' as a mechanism for understanding the centralised and top–down nature of British democracy, we argue that the integration of DMPs can offer an opportunity to mitigate some of the core problems with the functioning of the UK constitution and produce better constitutional policy. The American Association of School Librarians (AASL) released new guidelines for school library programs in the summer of 2009. Empowering Learners: Guidelines for School Library Programs (AASL 2009a), hereafter referred to as EL, spells out the five roles that school librarians must practice to empower library users. The purpose of this content-analysis study was to investigate the professional-development offerings available to school librarians through state-level conferences and determine the degree to which these sessions promote the five roles for school librarians as identified in EL. Using a stratified random sample, the researchers selected conferences held in the 2010-2011 academic year and sponsored or cosponsored by state-level school-library associations. The researchers developed and tested a domain matrix based on four of the five roles described in EL as topic domains (the leader role is embedded in the other four roles), and developed subcategories in each domain using the descriptors in EL. Using the matrix, they analyzed the titles and descriptions of twelve conference-program offerings. The results of the study show unbalanced conference-sponsored professional development in terms of the EL-defined roles for school librarians. (Contains 6 tables and 1 figure.)

Participating in outside activities and community-based endeavors can be tricky for people with special needs, like Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Families meet more than a few obstacles attempting to integrate their children or teens who have special needs like ASD. Most typical children are highly involved in sports, clubs and camps. If a family wants their child or teen to have social opportunities with peers then integration into community activities is necessary. This article provides advice in beginning the process of assessing integrated community involvement for the individual with special needs, specifically ASD.

Diamondback terrapins ( Malaclemys terrapin) have experienced declines throughout their range, and accidental mortality in crab pots is a significant conservation concern. To minimize the risk of terrapins entering crab pots, researchers have suggested the use of bycatch reduction devices (BRDs) to reduce the size of crab pot openings and thereby exclude terrapins from entering crab pots. Despite these recommendations, few studies have observed terrapin interactions with BRDs and effectively evaluated the efficacy of these devices at preventing the entry of terrapins into pots., The objective of this study was to determine the effect of BRD presence and orientation on terrapin behaviour around crab pots and overall terrapin capture rates., In a controlled laboratory setting, terrapins investigated crab pots more frequently when crab pots were baited with fish versus chicken. Terrapins were captured more frequently when BRDs were not installed. The presence of the BRDs also increased the length of time necessary for a terrapin to enter a crab pot and decreased the proportion of entries relative to the number of investigations. Vertically-oriented BRDs were more effective than horizontally-oriented BRDs at reducing terrapin captures., To prevent the continued decline of terrapin populations due to crab fisheries, it is recommended that crabbers avoid the use of fish as bait in crab pots to reduce the attractiveness of pots to terrapins and fit all crab pots with vertically-oriented BRDs to reduce terrapin entrapment., Copyright © 2015 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. Northern Ireland has seen a rise in racially motivated crimes and incidents reported to police in recent years and, although this has been accompanied by intensified media coverage, this phenomenon has been the subject of relatively little research. The purpose of this study is to evaluate empirically three theories that have been proposed to explain prejudice towards ethnic minorities in Northern Ireland; economic self-interest, social contact, and ‘sectarianism as racism’. Using the 2013 Northern Ireland Life and Times Survey, which contains new questions on contact with ethnic minorities, this study looks at attitudes towards Eastern Europeans, Muslims and a third category of ‘other ethnic groups’. Results from multivariate linear regression provide evidence for all three theories but also show that the strength and significance of predictive variables for prejudice vary across the minority groups. The findings that there are different motivations for prejudice towards different groups can inform policies to tackle racism in Northern Ireland. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
