We present the Cosmic Evolution Early Release Science (CEERS) Survey, a 77.2 hour Director's Discretionary Early Release Science Program. CEERS demonstrates, tests, and validates efficient extragalactic surveys using coordinated, overlapping parallel observations with the JWST instrument suite, including NIRCam and MIRI imaging, NIRSpec low (R~100) and medium (R~1000) resolution spectroscopy, and NIRCam slitless grism (R~1500) spectroscopy. CEERS targets the Hubble Space Telescope-observed region of the Extended Groth Strip (EGS) field, supported by a rich set of multiwavelength data. CEERS facilitated immediate community science in both of the extragalactic core JWST science drivers ``First Light" and ``Galaxy Assembly," including: 1) The discovery and characterization of large samples of galaxies at z >~ 10 from ~90 arcmin^2 of NIRCam imaging, constraining their abundance and physical nature; 2) Deep spectra of >1000 galaxies, including dozens of galaxies at 63; and 4) Characterizing galaxy mid-IR emission with MIRI to study dust-obscured star-formation and supermassive black hole growth at z~1-3. As a legacy product for the community, the CEERS team has provided several data releases, accompanied by detailed notes on the data reduction procedures and notebooks to aid in reproducibility. Deep learning-based automated contouring and treatment planning has been proven to improve the efficiency and accuracy of radiotherapy. However, conventional radiotherapy treatment planning process has the automated contouring and treatment planning as separate tasks. Moreover in deep learning (DL), the contouring and dose prediction tasks for automated treatment planning are done independently. In this study, we applied the multi-task learning (MTL) approach in order to seamlessly integrate automated contouring and voxel-based dose prediction tasks, as MTL can leverage common information between the two tasks and be able able to increase the efficiency of the automated tasks. We developed our MTL framework using the two datasets: in-house prostate cancer dataset and the publicly available head and neck cancer dataset, OpenKBP. Compared to the sequential DL contouring and treatment planning tasks, our proposed method using MTL improved the mean absolute difference of dose volume histogram metrics of prostate and head and neck sites by 19.82% and 16.33%, respectively. Our MTL model for automated contouring and dose prediction tasks demonstrated enhanced dose prediction performance while maintaining or sometimes even improving the contouring accuracy. Compared to the baseline automated contouring model with the dice score coefficients of 0.818 for prostate and 0.674 for head and neck datasets, our MTL approach achieved average scores of 0.824 and 0.716 for these datasets, respectively. Our study highlights the potential of the proposed automated contouring and planning using MTL to support the development of efficient and accurate automated treatment planning for radiotherapy.

Many software engineering maintenance tasks require linking a commit that induced a bug with the commit that later fixed that bug. Several existing SZZ algorithms provide a way to identify the potential commit that induced a bug when given a fixing commit as input. Prior work introduced the notion of a "work item", a logical grouping of commits that could be a single unit of work. Our key insight in this work is to recognize that a bug-inducing commit and the fix(es) for that bug together represent a "work item." It is not currently understood how these work items, which are logical groups of revisions addressing a single issue or feature, could impact the performance of algorithms such as SZZ. In this paper, we propose a heuristic that, given an input commit, uses information about changed methods to identify related commits that form a work item with the input commit. We hypothesize that given such a work item identifying heuristic, we can identify bug-inducing commits more accurately than existing SZZ approaches. We then build a new variant of SZZ that we call Work Item Aware SZZ (WIA-SZZ), that leverages our work item detecting heuristic to first suggest bug-inducing commits. If our heuristic fails to find any candidates, we then fall back to baseline variants of SZZ. We conduct a manual evaluation to assess the accuracy of our heuristic to identify work items. Our evaluation reveals the heuristic is 64% accurate in finding work items, but most importantly it is able to find many bug-inducing commits. We then evaluate our approach on 821 repositories that have been previously used to study the performance of SZZ, comparing our work against six SZZ variants. That evaluation shows an improvement in F1 scores ranging from 2% to 9%, or when looking only at the subset of cases that found work item improved 3% to 14%.

The maximum deposition eigenchannel provides the largest possible power delivery to a target region inside a diffusive medium by optimizing the incident wavefront of a monochromatic beam. It originates from constructive interference of scattered waves, which is frequency sensitive. We investigate the spectral width of maximum deposition eigenchannels over a range of target depths using numerical simulations of a 2D diffusive system. Compared to tight focusing into the system, power deposition to an extended region is more sensitive to frequency detuning. The spectral width of enhanced delivery to a large target displays a rather weak, non-monotonic variation with target depth, in contrast to a sharp drop of focusing bandwidth with depth. While the maximum enhancement of power deposited within a diffusive system can exceed that of power transmitted through it, this comes at the cost of a narrower spectral width. We investigate the narrower deposition width in terms of the constructive interference of transmission eigenchannels within the target. We further observe that the spatial field distribution inside the target region decorrelates slower with spectral detuning than power decay of the maximum deposition eigenchannel. Additionally, absorption increases the spectral width of deposition eigenchannels, but the depth dependence remains qualitatively identical to that without absorption. These findings hold for any diffusive waves, including electromagnetic waves, acoustic waves, pressure waves, mesoscopic electrons, and cold atoms., Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures

Scientific workflows have become highly heterogenous, leveraging distributed facilities such as High Performance Computing (HPC), Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML), scientific instruments (data-driven pipelines) and edge computing. As a result, Identity and Access Management (IAM) and Cybersecurity challenges across the diverse hardware and software stacks are growing. Nevertheless, scientific productivity relies on lowering access barriers via seamless, single sign-on (SSO) and federated login while ensuring access controls and compliance. We present an implementation of a federated IAM solution, which is coupled with multiple layers of security controls, multi-factor authentication, cloud-native protocols, and time-limited role-based access controls (RBAC) that has been co-designed and deployed for the Isambard-AI and HPC supercomputing Digital Research Infrastructures (DRIs) in the UK. Isambard DRIs as a national research resource are expected to comply with regulatory frameworks. Isambard-AI is a new, leadership-class supercomputer, designed to support AI-related research. Based on the HPE Cray EX4000 system, and housed in a new, energy efficient Modular Data Centre in Bristol, UK, Isambard-AI employs 5,448 NVIDIA Grace-Hopper GPUs to deliver over 21 ExaFLOP/s of 8-bit floating point performance for LLM training, and over 250 PetaFLOP/s of 64-bit performance, for under 5MW. Isambard-AI integrates two, all-flash storage systems: a 20 PiByte Cray ClusterStor and a 3.5 PiByte VAST solution. Combined these give Isambard-AI flexibility for training, inference and secure data accesses and sharing. But it is the software stack where Isambard-AI will be most different from traditional HPC systems. Isambard-AI is designed to support users who may have been using GPUs in the cloud, and so access will more typically be via Jupyter notebooks, MLOps, or other web-based, interactive interfaces, rather than the approach used on traditional supercomputers of sshing into a system before submitting jobs to a batch scheduler. Its stack is designed to be quickly and regularly upgraded to keep pace with the rapid evolution of AI software, with full support for containers. Continuous Integration (CI) encompasses a set of widely adopted practices that enhance software development. However, there are indications that developers may not adequately monitor CI practices. Hence, this paper explores developers' perceptions regarding the monitoring CI practices. To achieve this, we first perform a Document Analysis to assess developers' expressed need for practice monitoring in pull requests comments generated by developers during the development process. After that, we conduct a survey among developers from 121 open-source projects to understand perception of the significance of monitoring seven CI practices in their projects. Finally, we triangulate the emergent themes from our survey by performing a second Document Analysis to understand the extent of monitoring features supported by existing CI services. Our key findings indicate that: 1) the most frequently mentioned CI practice during the development process is ``Test Coverage'' (> 80\%), while ``Build Health'' and ``Time to Fix a Broken Build'' present notable opportunities for monitoring CI practices; 2) developers do not adequately monitor all CI practices and express interest in monitoring additional practices; and 3) the most popular CI services currently offer limited native support for monitoring CI practices, requiring the use of third-party tools. Our results lead us to conclude that monitoring CI practices is often overlooked by both CI services and developers. Using third-party tools in conjunction with CI services is challenging, they monitor some redundant practices and still falls short of fully supporting CI practices monitoring. Context:Today, ethical issues surrounding AI systems are increasingly prevalent, highlighting the critical need to integrate AI ethics into system design to prevent societal harm. Raising awareness and fostering a deep understanding of AI ethics among software practitioners is essential for achieving this goal. However, research indicates a significant gap in practitioners' awareness and knowledge of AI ethics and ethical principles. While much effort has been directed toward helping practitioners operationalise AI ethical principles such as fairness, transparency, accountability, and privacy, less attention has been paid to raising initial awareness, which should be the foundational step. Objective: Addressing this gap, we developed a software-based tool, the AI Ethics Quiz, to raise awareness and enhance the knowledge of AI ethics among software practitioners. Our objective was to organise interactive workshops, introduce the AI Ethics Quiz, and evaluate its effectiveness in enhancing awareness and knowledge of AI ethics and ethical principles among practitioners. Method: We conducted two one-hour workshops (one in-person and one online) involving 29 software practitioners. Data was collected through pre-quiz questionnaire, the AI Ethics Quiz, and a post-quiz questionnaire. Results: The anonymous responses revealed that the quiz significantly improved practitioners' awareness and understanding of AI ethics. Additionally, practitioners found the quiz engaging and reported it created a meaningful learning experience regarding AI ethics. In this paper, we share insights gained from conducting these interactive workshops and introducing the AI Ethics Quiz to practitioners. The Sun exhibits episodic surges of magnetic activity across a range of temporal and spatial scales, the most prominent of which is the 11-ish year modulation of sunspot production. Beside the ~170 (min to max) decadal variation in sunspot production there is a less-explored quasi-annual variation in the range of 25-50 sunspots/year in magnitude. In addition, there is there is a slower, ~80 year period, 10-50 variation in the sunspot number, that is commonly referred to as the 'Gleissberg Cycle.' Using a suite of contemporary and historical observations we will illustrate these elements of our star's episodic behavior and present a hypothesis that may provide a consistent physical link between the observed 'climatic', 'decadal' and 'seasonal' magnetic variation of our star., Comment: 18 pages, 8 figures

As an embodied and spatial medium, virtual reality is proving an attractive proposition for robot teleoperation in hazardous environments. This paper examines a nuclear decommissioning scenario in which a simulated team of semi-autonomous robots are used to characterise a chamber within a virtual nuclear facility. This study examines the potential utility and impact of sonification as a means of communicating salient operator data in such an environment. However, the question of what sound should be used and how it can be applied in different applications is far from resolved. This paper explores and compares two sonification design approaches. The first is inspired by the theory of cognitive metaphor to create sonifications that align with socially acquired contextual and ecological understanding of the application domain. The second adopts a computationalist approach using auditory mappings that are commonplace in the literature. The results suggest that the computationalist approach outperforms the cognitive metaphor approach in terms of predictability and mental workload. Electromagnetic stimulation probes and modulates the neural systems that control movement. Key to understanding their effects is the muscle recruitment curve, which maps evoked potential size against stimulation intensity. Current methods to estimate curve parameters require large samples; however, obtaining these is often impractical due to experimental constraints. Here, we present a hierarchical Bayesian framework that accounts for small samples, handles outliers, simulates high-fidelity data, and returns a posterior distribution over curve parameters that quantify estimation uncertainty. It uses a rectified-logistic function that estimates motor threshold and outperforms conventionally used sigmoidal alternatives in predictive performance, as demonstrated through cross-validation. In simulations, our method outperforms non-hierarchical models by reducing threshold estimation error on sparse data and requires fewer participants to detect shifts in threshold compared to frequentist testing. We present two common use cases involving electrical and electromagnetic stimulation data and provide an open-source library for Python, called hbMEP, for diverse applications.

In this study, we explored the progression trajectories of artificial intelligence (AI) systems through the lens of complexity theory. We challenged the conventional linear and exponential projections of AI advancement toward Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) underpinned by transformer-based architectures, and posited the existence of critical points, akin to phase transitions in complex systems, where AI performance might plateau or regress into instability upon exceeding a critical complexity threshold. We employed agent-based modelling (ABM) to simulate hypothetical scenarios of AI systems' evolution under specific assumptions, using benchmark performance as a proxy for capability and complexity. Our simulations demonstrated how increasing the complexity of the AI system could exceed an upper criticality threshold, leading to unpredictable performance behaviours. Additionally, we developed a practical methodology for detecting these critical thresholds using simulation data and stochastic gradient descent to fine-tune detection thresholds. This research offers a novel perspective on AI advancement that has a particular relevance to Large Language Models (LLMs), emphasising the need for a tempered approach to extrapolating AI's growth potential and underscoring the importance of developing more robust and comprehensive AI performance benchmarks.

The impact of software vulnerabilities on everyday software systems is significant. Despite deep learning models being proposed for vulnerability detection, their reliability is questionable. Prior evaluations show high recall/F1 scores of up to 99%, but these models underperform in practical scenarios, particularly when assessed on entire codebases rather than just the fixing commit. This paper introduces Real-Vul, a comprehensive dataset representing real-world scenarios for evaluating vulnerability detection models. Evaluating DeepWukong, LineVul, ReVeal, and IVDetect shows a significant drop in performance, with precision decreasing by up to 95 percentage points and F1 scores by up to 91 points. Furthermore, Model performance fluctuates based on vulnerability characteristics, with better F1 scores for information leaks or code injection than for path resolution or predictable return values. The results highlight a significant performance gap that needs addressing before deploying deep learning-based vulnerability detection in practical settings. Overfitting is identified as a key issue, and an augmentation technique is proposed, potentially improving performance by up to 30%. Contributions include a dataset creation approach for better model evaluation, Real-Vul dataset, and empirical evidence of deep learning models struggling in real-world settings.

This research pioneers the use of fine-tuned Large Language Models (LLMs) to automate Systematic Literature Reviews (SLRs), presenting a significant and novel contribution in integrating AI to enhance academic research methodologies. Our study employed the latest fine-tuning methodologies together with open-sourced LLMs, and demonstrated a practical and efficient approach to automating the final execution stages of an SLR process that involves knowledge synthesis. The results maintained high fidelity in factual accuracy in LLM responses, and were validated through the replication of an existing PRISMA-conforming SLR. Our research proposed solutions for mitigating LLM hallucination and proposed mechanisms for tracking LLM responses to their sources of information, thus demonstrating how this approach can meet the rigorous demands of scholarly research. The findings ultimately confirmed the potential of fine-tuned LLMs in streamlining various labor-intensive processes of conducting literature reviews. Given the potential of this approach and its applicability across all research domains, this foundational study also advocated for updating PRISMA reporting guidelines to incorporate AI-driven processes, ensuring methodological transparency and reliability in future SLRs. This study broadens the appeal of AI-enhanced tools across various academic and research fields, setting a new standard for conducting comprehensive and accurate literature reviews with more efficiency in the face of ever-increasing volumes of academic studies.

Forensic Scientometrics (FoSci) is emerging as a vital discipline at the intersection of scientific integrity and security. Scholarship and scholarly communication are critical for maintaining scientific integrity, influencing public trust in science, health, technology, policy, and law. Yet, these foundations are threatened by the misuse of scientific research for personal, commercial, ideological, and geopolitical gains, including questionable practices and misconduct. The rise of paper mills and predatory publishers, along with ideological and geopolitical motivations, undermines academic integrity. This field pioneers the integration of traditional scientometric methods with ethics to address pressing challenges in research integrity and security, crucial in an era of heightened scrutiny over science's reliability. Medical vision-language pretraining models (VLPM) have achieved remarkable progress in fusing chest X-rays (CXR) with clinical texts, introducing image-text data binding approaches that enable zero-shot learning and downstream clinical tasks. However, the current landscape lacks the holistic integration of additional medical modalities, such as electrocardiograms (ECG). We present MEDBind (Medical Electronic patient recorD), which learns joint embeddings across CXR, ECG, and medical text. Using text data as the central anchor, MEDBind features tri-modality binding, delivering competitive performance in top-K retrieval, zero-shot, and few-shot benchmarks against established VLPM, and the ability for CXR-to-ECG zero-shot classification and retrieval. This seamless integration is achieved through combination of contrastive loss on modality-text pairs with our proposed contrastive loss function, Edge-Modality Contrastive Loss, fostering a cohesive embedding space for CXR, ECG, and text. Finally, we demonstrate that MEDBind can improve downstream tasks by directly integrating CXR and ECG embeddings into a large-language model for multimodal prompt tuning.

This study investigated the integration readiness of four predominant cybersecurity Governance, Risk and Compliance (GRC) frameworks - NIST CSF 2.0, COBIT 2019, ISO 27001:2022, and the latest ISO 42001:2023 - for the opportunities, risks, and regulatory compliance when adopting Large Language Models (LLMs), using qualitative content analysis and expert validation. Our analysis, with both LLMs and human experts in the loop, uncovered potential for LLM integration together with inadequacies in LLM risk oversight of those frameworks. Comparative gap analysis has highlighted that the new ISO 42001:2023, specifically designed for Artificial Intelligence (AI) management systems, provided most comprehensive facilitation for LLM opportunities, whereas COBIT 2019 aligned most closely with the impending European Union AI Act. Nonetheless, our findings suggested that all evaluated frameworks would benefit from enhancements to more effectively and more comprehensively address the multifaceted risks associated with LLMs, indicating a critical and time-sensitive need for their continuous evolution. We propose integrating human-expert-in-the-loop validation processes as crucial for enhancing cybersecurity frameworks to support secure and compliant LLM integration, and discuss implications for the continuous evolution of cybersecurity GRC frameworks to support the secure integration of LLMs.

The rapid rise in popularity of Large Language Models (LLMs) with emerging capabilities has spurred public curiosity to evaluate and compare different LLMs, leading many researchers to propose their own LLM benchmarks. Noticing preliminary inadequacies in those benchmarks, we embarked on a study to critically assess 23 state-of-the-art LLM benchmarks, using our novel unified evaluation framework through the lenses of people, process, and technology, under the pillars of benchmark functionality and integrity. Our research uncovered significant limitations, including biases, difficulties in measuring genuine reasoning, adaptability, implementation inconsistencies, prompt engineering complexity, evaluator diversity, and the overlooking of cultural and ideological norms in one comprehensive assessment. Our discussions emphasized the urgent need for standardized methodologies, regulatory certainties, and ethical guidelines in light of Artificial Intelligence (AI) advancements, including advocating for an evolution from static benchmarks to dynamic behavioral profiling to accurately capture LLMs' complex behaviors and potential risks. Our study highlighted the necessity for a paradigm shift in LLM evaluation methodologies, underlining the importance of collaborative efforts for the development of universally accepted benchmarks and the enhancement of AI systems' integration into society.

Self-Admitted Technical Debt (SATD) annotates development decisions that intentionally exchange long-term software artifact quality for short-term goals. Recent work explores the existence of SATD clones (duplicate or near duplicate SATD comments) in source code. Cloning of SATD in build systems (e.g., CMake and Maven) may propagate suboptimal design choices, threatening qualities of the build system that stakeholders rely upon (e.g., maintainability, reliability, repeatability). Hence, we conduct a large-scale study on 50,608 SATD comments extracted from Autotools, CMake, Maven, and Ant build systems to investigate the prevalence of SATD clones and to characterize their incidences. We observe that: (i) prior work suggests that 41-65% of SATD comments in source code are clones, but in our studied build system context, the rates range from 62% to 95%, suggesting that SATD clones are a more prevalent phenomenon in build systems than in source code; (ii) statements surrounding SATD clones are highly similar, with 76% of occurrences having similarity scores greater than 0.8; (iii) a quarter of SATD clones are introduced by the author of the original SATD statements; and (iv) among the most commonly cloned SATD comments, external factors (e.g., platform and tool configuration) are the most frequent locations, limitations in tools and libraries are the most frequent causes, and developers often copy SATD comments that describe issues to be fixed later. Our work presents the first step toward systematically understanding SATD clones in build systems and opens up avenues for future work, such as distinguishing different SATD clone behavior, as well as designing an automated recommendation system for repaying SATD effectively based on resolved clones.

"App stores" are online software stores where end users may browse, purchase, download, and install software applications. By far, the best known app stores are associated with mobile platforms, such as Google Play for Android and Apple's App Store for iOS. The ubiquity of smartphones has led to mobile app stores becoming a touchstone experience of modern living. However, most of app store research has concentrated on properties of the apps rather than the stores themselves. Today, there is a rich diversity of app stores and these stores have largely been overlooked by researchers: app stores exist on many distinctive platforms, are aimed at different classes of users, and have different end-goals beyond simply selling a standalone app to a smartphone user. We survey and characterize the broader dimensionality of app stores, and explore how and why they influence software development practices, such as system design and release management. We begin by collecting a set of app store examples from web search queries. By analyzing and curating the results, we derive a set of features common to app stores. We then build a dimensional model of app stores based on these features, and we fit each app store from our web search result set into this model. Next, we performed unsupervised clustering to the app stores to find their natural groupings. Our results suggest that app stores have become an essential stakeholder in modern software development. They control the distribution channel to end users and ensure that the applications are of suitable quality; in turn, this leads to developers adhering to various store guidelines when creating their applications. However, we found the app stores operational model could vary widely between stores, and this variability could in turn affect the generalizability of existing understanding of app stores., Comment: 41 pages

Fabricated papers do not just need text, images, and data, they also require a fabricated or partially fabricated network of authors. Most `authors' on a fabricated paper have not been associated with the research, but rather are added through a transaction. This lack of deeper connection means that there is a low likelihood that co-authors on fabricated papers will ever appear together on the same paper more than once. This paper constructs a model that encodes some of the key characteristics of this activity in an `authorship-for-sale' network with the aim to create a robust method to detect this type of activity. A characteristic network fingerprint arises from this model that provides a robust statistical approach to the detection of paper-mill networks. The model suggested in this paper detects networks that have a statistically significant overlap with other approaches that principally rely on textual analysis for the detection of fraudulent papers. Researchers connected to networks identified using the methodology outlined in this paper are shown to be connected with 37% of papers identified through the tortured-phrase and clay-feet methods deployed in the Problematic Paper Screener website. Finally, methods to limit the expansion and propagation of these networks is discussed both in technological and social terms.

Recently, AMD platforms have not supported offloading C++17 PSTL (StdPar) programs to the GPU. Our previous work highlights how StdPar is able to achieve good performance across NVIDIA and Intel GPU platforms. In that work, we acknowledged AMD's past effort such as HCC, which unfortunately is deprecated and does not support newer hardware platforms. Recent developments by AMD, Codeplay, and AdaptiveCpp (previously known as hipSYCL or OpenSYCL) have enabled multiple paths for StdPar programs to run on AMD GPUs. This informal report discusses our experiences and evaluation of currently available StdPar implementations for AMD GPUs. We conduct benchmarks using our suite of HPC mini-apps with ports in many heterogeneous programming models, including StdPar. We then compare the performance of StdPar, using all available StdPar compilers, to contemporary heterogeneous programming models supported on AMD GPUs: HIP, OpenCL, Thrust, Kokkos, OpenMP, SYCL. Where appropriate, we discuss issues encountered and workarounds applied during our evaluation. Finally, the StdPar model discussed in this report largely depends on Unified Shared Memory (USM) performance and very few AMD GPUs have proper support for this feature. As such, this report demonstrates a proof-of-concept host-side userspace pagefault solution for models that use the HIP API. We discuss performance improvements achieved with our solution using the same set of benchmarks., Comment: This is a preliminary report intended as early feedback for interested vendors.
