Source: https://erdc-library.erdc.dren.mil/jspui/ In 1985, the rubble-mound jetties at the entrance to the Suislaw River, Florence, OR, were extended offshore. In addition, on the Ocen side of each jetty, one long spur oriented 45 deg to the main structure was constructed shoreward of the seaward end of each of the twin jetties. The spur system was investigated as a cost-reducing alternative to significant linear jetty length extension which would reduce sediment shoaling and dredging requirements in the channel and improve navigability. Cost reductions were expected in reduced maintenance dredging and in actual construction and material cost. Monitoring and evaluation of the jetty system were conducted through the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Monitoring of Completed Coastal Projects (MCCP) Program by the Coastal Engineering Research Center (CERC) in coordination with the U.S. Army Engineer District, Portland (NPP). Data collected during field monitoring of the area are related to incident wave conditions. Spur-induced current patterns and sediment deposition patterns, along with annual dredging records are analyzed to evaluate structure performance. The favorable results of this MCCP study substantiate physical model test findings and indicate potential application of spur jetties at other sites.

Five of the gages are located along the U.S. Atlantic coast, one in Lake Michigan, and one is located in the eastern Gulf of Mexico. These gages are part of the Network for Engineering Monitoring of the Oceans (NEMO) operated by the Prototype Measurement and Analysis Branch of the Coastal Engineering Research Center, U.S. Army Engineer Waterways Experiment Station. The wave data summary products presented in this report are provided to aid in engineering design, assessment, operation, and maintenance of Corps coastal projects. Future summaries will be a product of the Field Wave Gaging Program.

Source: https://erdc-library.erdc.dren.mil/jspui/ A Wave Data User's Needs Survey was performed to support the U.S. Army Engineer Waterways Experiment Station, Coastal Engineering Research Center's (CERC) Field Wave Gaging Program (FWGP). Survey results will contribute to design of the data management and distribution system through which FWGP data and products will become available. Approximately 510 surveys were distributed to a wide variety of possible wave information users including contacts within Corps of Engineers Division and District offices, CERC personnel, and contacts outside the Corps of Engineers. The number of returned surveys totaled 212 resulting in an approximate 42-percent return rate. Responses were optically scanned and survey data were placed into a database. Statistical analysis provided quantitative results for a variety of response categories including (a) FWGP data and product users within the Corps of Engineers but not within CERC, (b) users within CERC, and (c) users outside of the Corps of Engineers. Results are provided as graphical presentations and as detailed tabulated reports.

Source: https://erdc-library.erdc.dren.mil/jspui/ The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Field Wave Gaging Program (FWGP) operates a nationwide network of wave gauges and serves as the Corps' central access point for all U.S. wave data. This is the third in a series of FWGP reports describing, through case studies, the process of selecting sites for wave gauges. This report illustrates the use of two different models to optimize gauge sites in a local gauge network for a harbor oscillation study. The harbor that was studied is Kahului Harbor, Hawaii. Results of the numerical model tests show that Kahului Harbor is characterized by numerous resonant modes in the frequency band from 0.001 to 0.012 Hz. Recommendations from this report were followed in deployment of the Kahului Harbor gauge network in October of 1993. The network was installed and is operated by the Ocean Engineering Research Group at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography.

Source: https://erdc-library.erdc.dren.mil/jspui/ A monitoring system was designed and operated at a coal terminal in Los Angeles Harbor and at a container terminal in Long Beach Harbor. The objective was to obtain the complete six degree-of-freedom response of vessels, as well as the mooring line and fender reactions, to measured longperiod waves. A unique data set was collected on five separate ships. The data will be used to calibrate and verify a numerical, moored ship-motion model. The system design and sample data results are presented. Spectral analysis is used to illustrate relationships between waves and ship response.

Source: https://erdc-library.erdc.dren.mil/jspui/ The Field Wave Gaging Program is a multi-year effort to obtain data sets of nearshore wave conditions for the entire US coastline. A five-year plan that provides the locations and schedules of existing and planned gage deployments based on FY90 budget projections is presented. Data requirements and gage deployments are presented in a series of tables and maps for each US Army Corps of Engineers coastal Division. An updated plan will be published annually.

The methods and results of the field data collection effortare presented. Analysis was performed to verify the quality of the tidal data and the flow patterns revealed by the current data.

Source: https://erdc-library.erdc.dren.mil/jspui/ The entrance channel to St. Andrew Bay, near Panama City, Florida, is subject to the formation of large sand waves. A study was undertaken to determine the extent of the problem, as related to navigation, and to assess possible mitigative alternatives. The inlet was originally constructed in the early 1930's and now must be dredged every 12 to 24 months as a result of the large sand waves which form in the navigation channel. The study considered structural changes to the inlet/jetty system using "INLET," a one-dimensional inlet flow model. Various alternatives were assessed to determine if structural modifications would help reduce sand wave sizes and/or decrease the necessary dredging frequency. Alternative dredging techniques were also investigated to identify more cost-effective methods of maintaining the sand wave prone navigation channel.
