Background: Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is a severe critical condition with a high mortality that is currently in focus given that it is associated with mortality caused by coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Neutrophils play a key role in the lung injury characteristic of non-COVID-19 ARDS and there is also accumulating evidence of neutrophil mediated lung injury in patients who succumb to infection with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2).Methods: We undertook a functional proteomic and metabolomic survey of circulating neutrophil populations, comparing patients with COVID-19 ARDS and non-COVID-19 ARDS to understand the molecular basis of neutrophil dysregulation.Results: Expansion of the circulating neutrophil compartment and the presence of activated low and normal density mature and immature neutrophil populations occurs in ARDS, irrespective of cause. Release of neutrophil granule proteins, neutrophil activation of the clotting cascade and upregulation of the Mac-1 platelet binding complex with formation of neutrophil platelet aggregates is exaggerated in COVID-19 ARDS. Importantly, activation of components of the neutrophil type I interferon responses is seen in ARDS following infection with SARS-CoV-2, with associated rewiring of neutrophil metabolism, and the upregulation of antigen processing and presentation. Whilst dexamethasone treatment constricts the immature low density neutrophil population, it does not impact upon prothrombotic hyperinflammatory neutrophil signatures.Conclusions: Given the crucial role of neutrophils in ARDS and the evidence of a disordered myeloid response observed in COVID-19 patients, this work maps the molecular basis for neutrophil reprogramming in the distinct clinical entities of COVID-19 and non-COVID-19 ARDS.

Diese können die Lernenden unmittelbar betreffen, da der Unterrichtsausfall zu Einbußen bei schulischen Lernergebnissen führen kann. Unsere empirischen Untersuchungen für die Grundschulzeit verdeutlichen, dass Schulschließungen vor allem in den ersten beiden Klassenstufen herkunftsbedingte Ungleichheiten verstärken könnten. Diese Ungleichheiten betreffen nicht nur die fachlichen Kompetenzen, wie etwa mathematische und sprachliche Fähigkeiten, sondern auch die Ausdauer und die Konzentrationsfähigkeit. Viele Schulen und vor allem engagierte Lehrerinnen und Lehrer versuchen mit Onlineangeboten und digitalem Unterricht Lernalternativen bereitzustellen. Gerade in diesen Fällen könnten jedoch die außerschulischen Faktoren, darunter das Familienumfeld, wieder an Bedeutung gewinnen und Ungleichheiten verstärken. Schulschließungen gefährden somit den Gleichheitsanspruch der Bildungspolitik, insbesondere zu Beginn der Grundschulzeit. Die Bildungspolitik ist daher gefordert, Schule neu zu denken. Angesichts des digitalen Fortschritts ist nun das Potential vorhanden, professionalisierte und didaktisch geprüfte Interaktionen in den Alltag von Grundschülerinnen und -schülern außerhalb des Lernortes Schule hineinzutragen. Schule neu zu denken bedeutet, dem Gleichheitsanspruch vor allem in Zeiten von Schulschließungen gerecht zu werden. Dies lässt sich verwirklichen, indem altersadäquate und qualifizierte Unterrichtung nicht mehr an den Ort Schule gebunden sein muss. School closures are one of the measures taken to combat COVID-19. However, such measures have side effects that directly affect learners, since the loss of instruction time may lead to a reduction in learning outcomes. Our empirical analysis for primary school aged children shows that school closures could exacerbate inequalities relating to a child’s family-background. Some schools, and particularly dedicated teachers, are trying to provide alternatives to traditional classroom-based learning via online offerings and digital classroom instruction. However, it is precisely in these cases that non-school-related factors, such as the family environment, may become increasingly important once again and reinforce existing inequalities. School closures thus jeopardise the claim of equality in education made by education policymakers, particularly during the early years of primary school. It is therefore imperative to rethink the current approach to schooling. In light of digital progress, for the first time there exists the potential to bring professionalised, pedagogically tested interactions into the everyday life of school children while outside of the classroom environment. Rethinking schooling means doing justice to the need for equality even in times of school closures. This will be possible if age-appropriate high-quality instruction no longer needs to be tied to the school as a physical location.

This paper provides estimates of the short-term individual returns to Higher Education (HE) in the United Kingdom, focusing on the effects of attending HE on the labour market outcomes for dropouts. Results show differential labour market outcomes for dropouts vs. individuals who have never attended HE, where outcomes are employment, wages and occupational status. I find that female dropouts, on average, have a higher occupational status than those who have never participated in HE, but do not experience a wage premium. Conversely, male dropouts experience a wage premium relative those who have never participated in HE, but the effect on occupational status is comparatively small. The evidence is mixed, however, as both male and female dropouts are more likely to be unemployed, though the effect is larger for males.
