9. Probing the ground state in gauge theories

Abstract

We consider two very different models of the flux tube linking two heavy quarks: a string linking the matter fields and a Coulombic description of two separately gauge invariant charges. We compare how close they are to the unknown true ground state in compact U(1) and the SU(2) Higgs model. Simulations in compact U(1) show that the string description is better in the confined phase but the Coulombic description is best in the deconfined phase; the last result is shown to agree with analytical calculations. Surprisingly in the non-abelian theory the Coulombic description is better in both the Higgs and confined phases. This indicates a significant difference in the width of the flux tubes in the two theories., Comment: 13 pages, 10 .eps figures. V2: conclusions extended

The reduced Hamiltonian system on T*SU(3)/SU(2)) is derived from a Riemannian geodesic motion on the SU(3) group manifold parameterised by the generalised Euler angles and endowed with a bi-invariant metric. Our calculations show that the metric defined by the derived reduced Hamiltonian flow on the orbit space SU(3)/SU(2)=S^5 is not isometric or even geodesically equivalent to the standard Riemannian metric on the five-sphere S^5 embedded into R^6., Comment: 36 pages

11. Anti-Screening by Quarks and the Structure of the Inter-Quark Potential

Abstract

The inter-quark potential is dominated by anti-screening effects which underly asymptotic freedom. We calculate the order g^6 anti-screening contribution from light fermions and demonstrate that these effects introduce a non-local divergence. These divergences are shown to make it impossible to define a coupling renormalisation scheme that renormalises this minimal, anti-screening potential. Hence the beta function cannot be divided into screening and anti-screening parts beyond lowest order. Abstract

We prove that magnetic charge does not exist as a physical observable on the physical Hilbert space of the pure SU(2) gauge theory. The abelian magnetic monopoles seen in lattice simulations are then interpreted as artifacts of gauge fixing. The apparent physical scaling properties of the monopole density in the continuum limit observed on the lattice are attributed to the correct scaling properties of physical objects - magnetic vortices, as first argued by Greensite et. al. We can show that a local gauge transformation of a certain type can " create" abelian monopole-antimonopole pairs along magnetic vortices. 19. Safety and Efficacy of Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation Heating Units

Abstract

Background Patient temperature during extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) is commonly managed by dedicated heating units (HUs) that are integrated into ECMO circuitry. Currently, no HU has received approval for ECMO by the FDA in the United States. Older FDA-approved HUs have been implicated in life-threatening patient infections and are no longer manufactured or available for use in the United States.Methods We performed laboratory tests to evaluate the safety and efficacy of the Micro-Temp and the HTP-1500 HU systems that are potentially suitable for use in ECMO and describe our initial experience with the HTP-1500 HU after being placed in clinical service.Results Both units demonstrated similar heating efficacy, with the HTP-1500 achieving steady-state temperature approximately 5 h earlier than the Micro-Temp. Microorganisms were detected in the water compartment of all HUs prior to and after performing the manufacturer's recommended cleaning procedure, and after implementation of the HTP-1500 into clinical use we observed a decrease in the rate of bloodstream infection/ECMO days which did not reach statistical significance.Conclusion Based on the results of this analysis and our institutional experience, we believe that integration of the HTP-1500 HU, an easily replaceable HU, into ECMO systems may reduce the risk of bacterial contamination and thus nosocomial infection when the devices are cleaned and maintained according to manufacturer's guidelines.

This talk reports on work aimed at improving our understanding of charged states in gauge theories.Emphasis is placed on different ways of implementingthe gauge invariance of physical states. QED perturbative calculations are used to stress that gauge invariance is not enough: only a subset of such states have a direct physical significance. In QCD a non-perturbative obstruction means that quarks and gluons cannot form physical states and as such these particles are not truely observables. We motivate the use of dressed charges by arguing that such objects are needed to describe, e.g., constituent quarks and, in general, physical charged states in gauge theories. We give a short introduction to dressings in both QED and QCD. We put special emphasis on the infra-red properties of a moving dressed charge. Abstract

BackgroundRepeat expansion (RE) disorders affect ~1 in 3000 individuals and are clinically heterogeneous diseases caused by expansions of short tandem DNA repeats. Genetic testing is often locus-specific, resulting in under diagnosis of atypical clinical presentations, especially in paediatric patients without a prior positive family history. Whole genome sequencing (WGS) is emerging as a first-line test for rare genetic disorders, but until recently REs were thought to be undetectable by this approach.MethodsWGS pipelines for RE disorder detection were deployed by the 100,000 Genomes Project and Illumina Clinical Services Laboratory. Performance was retrospectively assessed across the 13 most common neurological RE loci using 793 samples with prior orthogonal testing (182 with expanded alleles and 611 with alleles within normal size) and prospectively interrogated in 13,331 patients with suspected genetic neurological disorders.FindingsWGS RE detection showed minimum 97·3% sensitivity and 99·6% specificity across all 13 disease-associated loci. Applying the pipeline to patients from the 100,000 Genomes Project identified pathogenic repeat expansions which were confirmed in 69 patients, including seven paediatric patients with no reported family history of RE disorders, with a 0.09% false positive rate.InterpretationWe show here for the first time that WGS enables the detection of causative repeat expansions with high sensitivity and specificity, and that it can be used to resolve previously undiagnosed neurological disorders. This includes children with no prior suspicion of a RE disorder.
