The fast solar wind that fills the heliosphere originates from deep within regions of open magnetic field on the Sun called coronal holes. The energy source responsible for accelerating the plasma to high speeds is widely debated, however there is evidence that it is ultimately magnetic in nature with candidate mechanisms including wave heating^(1,2) and interchange reconnection^(3,4,5). The coronal magnetic field near the solar surface is structured on scales associated with supergranulation convection cells, where descending flows create intense fields. The energy density in these network magnetic field bundles is a likely candidate as an energy source of the wind. Here we report measurements of fast solar wind streams from the Parker Solar Probe (PSP) spacecraft^6 which provides strong evidence for the interchange reconnection mechanism. We show that supergranulation structure at the coronal hole base remains imprinted in the near-Sun solar wind resulting in asymmetric patches of magnetic 'switchbacks'^(7,8) and bursty wind streams with power law-like energetic ion spectra to beyond 100 keV. Computer simulations of interchange reconnection support key features of the observations, including the ion spectra. Important characteristics of interchange reconnection in the low corona are inferred from the data including that the reconnection is collisionless and that the energy release rate is sufficient to power the fast wind. In this scenario, open magnetic flux undergoes continuous reconnection and the wind is driven both by the resulting plasma pressure and the radial Alfvenic flow bursts., Comment: 15 pages, 4 figures. Magnetic switchbacks, or sudden reversals in the magnetic field's radial direction, are one of the more striking observations of Parker Solar Probe (PSP) thus far in its mission. While their precise production mechanisms are still unknown, the two main theories are via interchange reconnection events and in-situ generation. In this work density and abundance variations of alpha particles are studied inside and outside individual switchbacks. We find no consistent compositional differences in the alpha particle abundance ratio, $n_{\alpha p}$, inside vs outside, nor do we observe any signature when separating the switchbacks according to $V_{\alpha p}/V_{pw}$, the ratio of alpha-proton differential speed to the wave phase speed (speed the switchback is travelling). We argue these measurements cannot be used to rule in favour of one production mechanism over the other, due to the distance between PSP and the postulated interchange reconnection events. In addition we examine the 3D velocity fluctuations of protons and alpha particles within individual switchbacks. While switchbacks are always associated with increases in proton velocity, alpha velocities may be enhanced, unchanged, or decrease. This is due to the interplay between $V_{pw}$ and $V_{\alpha p}$, with the Alfv\'enic motion of the alpha particles vanishing as the difference $|V_{pw} - V_{\alpha p}|$ decreases. We show how the Alfv\'enic motion of both the alphas and the protons through switchbacks can be understood as approximately rigid arm rotation about the location of the wave frame, and illustrate that the wave frame can therefore be estimated using particle measurements alone, via sphere fitting., Comment: To be published in ApJ

The velocity of alpha particles relative to protons can vary depending on the solar wind type and distance from the Sun (Marsch 2012). Measurements from the previous spacecraft provided the alpha-proton's differential velocities down to 0.3 au. Parker Solar Probe (PSP) now enables insights into differential flows of newly accelerated solar wind closer to the Sun for the first time. Here, we study the difference between proton and alpha bulk velocities near PSP perihelia of Encounters 3-7 when the core solar wind is in the field of view of the Solar Probe Analyzer for Ions (SPAN-I) instrument. As previously reported at larger heliospheric distances, the alpha-proton differential speed observed by PSP is greater for fast wind than the slow solar wind. We compare PSP observations with various spacecraft measurements and present the radial and temporal evolution of the alpha-proton differential speed. The differential flow decreases as the solar wind propagates from the Sun, consistent with previous observations. While Helios showed a small radial dependence of differential flow for the slow solar wind, PSP clearly showed this dependency for the young slow solar wind down to 0.09 au. Our analysis shows that the alpha-proton differential speed's magnitude is mainly below the local Alfv\'en speed. Moreover, alpha particles usually move faster than protons close to the Sun. PSP crossed the Alfv\'en surface during its eighth Encounter and may cross it in future Encounters, enabling us to investigate the differential flow very close to the solar wind acceleration source region for the first time., Comment: Accepted paper

The SWEAP instrument suite on Parker Solar Probe (PSP) has detected numerous proton beams associated with coherent, circularly polarized, ion-scale waves observed by PSP's FIELDS instrument suite. Measurements during PSP Encounters 4-8 revealed pronounced complex shapes in the proton velocity distribution functions (VDFs), in which the tip of the beam undergoes strong perpendicular diffusion, resulting in VDF level contours that resemble a `hammerhead.' We refer to these proton beams, with their attendant `hammerhead' features, as the ion strahl. We present an example of these observations occurring simultaneously with a 7-hour ion-scale wave storm and show results from a preliminary attempt at quantifying the occurrence of ion-strahl broadening through 3-component ion-VDF fitting. We also provide a possible explanation of the ion perpendicular scattering based on quasilinear theory and the resonant scattering of beam ions by parallel-propagating, right circularly polarized, fast-magnetosonic/whistler waves., Comment: 13 pages, 8 figures, Under Review in the Astrophysical Journal

One of the striking observations from the Parker Solar Probe (PSP) spacecraft is the prevalence in the inner heliosphere of large amplitude, Alfv\'enic magnetic field reversals termed 'switchbacks'. These $\delta B_R/B \sim \mathcal{O}(1$) fluctuations occur on a range of timescales and in {\em patches} separated by intervals of quiet, radial magnetic field. We use measurements from PSP to demonstrate that patches of switchbacks are localized within the extensions of plasma structures originating at the base of the corona. These structures are characterized by an increase in alpha particle abundance, Mach number, plasma $\beta$ and pressure, and by depletions in the magnetic field magnitude and electron temperature. These intervals are in pressure-balance, implying stationary spatial structure, and the field depressions are consistent with overexpanded flux tubes. The structures are asymmetric in Carrington longitude with a steeper leading edge and a small ($\sim$1$^\circ$) edge of hotter plasma and enhanced magnetic field fluctuations. Some structures contain suprathermal ions to $\sim$85 keV that we argue are the energetic tail of the solar wind alpha population. The structures are separated in longitude by angular scales associated with supergranulation. This suggests that these switchbacks originate near the leading edge of the diverging magnetic field funnels associated with the network magnetic field - the primary wind sources. We propose an origin of the magnetic field switchbacks, hot plasma and suprathermals, alpha particles in interchange reconnection events just above the solar transition region and our measurements represent the extended regions of a turbulent outflow exhaust., Comment: 18 pages, 9 figures, submitted to Astrophys. The hot and diffuse nature of the Sun's extended atmosphere allows it to persist in non-equilibrium states for long enough that wave-particle instabilities can arise and modify the evolution of the expanding solar wind. Determining which instabilities arise, and how significant a role they play in governing the dynamics of the solar wind, has been a decades-long process involving in situ observations at a variety of radial distances. With new measurements from Parker Solar Probe (PSP), we can study what wave modes are driven near the Sun, and calculate what instabilities are predicted for different models of the underlying particle populations. We model two hours-long intervals of PSP/SPAN-i measurements of the proton phase-space density during PSP's fourth perihelion with the Sun using two commonly used descriptions for the underlying velocity distribution. The linear stability and growth rates associated with the two models are calculated and compared. We find that both selected intervals are susceptible to resonant instabilities, though the growth rates and kind of modes driven unstable vary depending on if the protons are modeled using one or two components. In some cases, the predicted growth rates are large enough to compete with other dynamic processes, such as the nonlinear turbulent transfer of energy, in contrast with relatively slower instabilities at larger radial distances from the Sun., Comment: 10 pages, 9 figures, accepted in ApJ

Switchbacks are discrete angular deflections in the solar wind magnetic field that have been observed throughout the heliosphere. Recent observations by Parker Solar Probe (PSP) have revealed the presence of patches of switchbacks on the scale of hours to days, separated by 'quieter' radial fields. We aim to further diagnose the origin of these patches using measurements of proton temperature anisotropy that can illuminate possible links to formation processes in the solar corona. We fitted 3D bi-Maxwellian functions to the core of proton velocity distributions measured by the SPAN-Ai instrument onboard PSP to obtain the proton parallel, $T_{p,\|}$, and perpendicular, $T_{p,\perp}$, temperature. We show that the presence of patches is highlighted by a transverse deflection in the flow and magnetic field away from the radial direction. These deflections are correlated with enhancements in $T_{p,\|}$, while $T_{p,\perp}$ remains relatively constant. Patches sometimes exhibit small proton and electron density enhancements. We interpret that patches are not simply a group of switchbacks, but rather switchbacks are embedded within a larger-scale structure identified by enhanced $T_{p,\|}$ that is distinct from the surrounding solar wind. We suggest that these observations are consistent with formation by reconnection-associated mechanisms in the corona., Comment: Letter accepted as part of the PSP Special Issue in A&A

Parker Solar Probe (PSP), NASA's latest and closest mission to the Sun, is on a journey to investigate fundamental enigmas of the inner heliosphere. This paper reports initial observations made by the Solar Probe Analyzer for Ions (SPAN-I), one of the instruments in the Solar Wind Electrons Alphas and Protons (SWEAP) instrument suite. We address the presence of secondary proton beams in concert with ion-scale waves observed by FIELDS, the electromagnetic fields instrument suite. We show two events from PSP's 2nd orbit that demonstrate signatures consistent with wave-particle interactions. We showcase 3D velocity distribution functions (VDFs) measured by SPAN-I during times of strong wave power at ion-scales. From an initial instability analysis, we infer that the VDFs departed far enough away from local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE) to provide sufficient free energy to locally generate waves. These events exemplify the types of instabilities that may be present and, as such, may guide future data analysis characterizing and distinguishing between different wave-particle interactions., Comment: 24 pages, 9 figures, 2 tables

The first two orbits of the Parker Solar Probe (PSP) spacecraft have enabled the first in situ measurements of the solar wind down to a heliocentric distance of 0.17 au (or 36 Rs). Here, we present an analysis of this data to study solar wind turbulence at 0.17 au and its evolution out to 1 au. While many features remain similar, key differences at 0.17 au include: increased turbulence energy levels by more than an order of magnitude, a magnetic field spectral index of -3/2 matching that of the velocity and both Elsasser fields, a lower magnetic compressibility consistent with a smaller slow-mode kinetic energy fraction, and a much smaller outer scale that has had time for substantial nonlinear processing. There is also an overall increase in the dominance of outward-propagating Alfv\'enic fluctuations compared to inward-propagating ones, and the radial variation of the inward component is consistent with its generation by reflection from the large-scale gradient in Alfv\'en speed. The energy flux in this turbulence at 0.17 au was found to be ~10% of that in the bulk solar wind kinetic energy, becoming ~40% when extrapolated to the Alfv\'en point, and both the fraction and rate of increase of this flux towards the Sun is consistent with turbulence-driven models in which the solar wind is powered by this flux.

The solar wind is slowed, deflected, and heated as it encounters Venus's induced magnetosphere. The importance of kinetic plasma processes to these interactions has not been examined in detail, due to a lack of constraining observations. In this study, kinetic-scale electric field structures are identified in the Venusian magnetosheath, including plasma double layers. The double layers may be driven by currents or mixing of inhomogeneous plasmas near the edge of the magnetosheath. Estimated double-layer spatial scales are consistent with those reported at Earth. Estimated potential drops are similar to electron temperature gradients across the bow shock. Many double layers are found in few high cadence data captures, suggesting that their amplitudes are high relative to other magnetosheath plasma waves. These are the first direct observations of plasma double layers beyond near-Earth space, supporting the idea that kinetic plasma processes are active in many space plasma environments.

The bay scallop is a culturally important species that once supported significant fisheries along the U.S. east coast. Mass population declines in the 1900s led to a nearly total loss of the fishery in most states, including Rhode Island. In certain areas, intensive, long-term restoration efforts have effectively restored scallop populations and fisheries on a small scale, but indicate that such plans must be scoped specific to systems. In an effort to support the development of an upcoming Rhode Island Shellfish Restoration Plan, relevant knowledge on bay scallops was collated and summarized, and this information was used to create a habitat suitability index that can act as a guide to identify suitable restoration sites for renewed bay scallop restoration efforts in one of the largest coastal salt ponds in Rhode Island. Point Judith Pond. Point Judith Pond was once the epicenter of the bay scallop fishery in the state of Rhode Island, and the ranked index suggests multiple sites throughout the pond are likely to once again provide adequate habitat for bay scallops. Restoration strategies such as caged spawner sanctuaries and the release of competent larvae in areas identified as suitable by the index are recommended for future restoration planning of this species. KEY WORDS: shellfish, restoration strategies, habitat suitability index, enhancement, restoration planning, INTRODUCTION In the late 19th century and much of the 20th century, robust populations of bay scallops supported a lucrative fishery in the United States (U.S.) (MacKenzie 2008). - Abstract
This research collates numerous data sets, including long‐term fisheries monitoring surveys, predators, water quality, and fishing pressure, to explore possible biotic and abiotic correlates that may be hindering the recovery of a Winter Flounder Pseudopleuronectes americanussubpopulation. Age‐0 (i.e., young‐of‐year) Winter Flounder and spawning contingents within a single coastal lagoon, Point Judith Pond (Rhode Island), were evaluated across two decades (1999–2020) to determine how potential ecological drivers and harvest have contributed to the subpopulation's state. Available data sets describing predators of both age‐0 and adult Winter Flounder, fecal coliform measurements, water temperature, and commercial and recreational harvest were run in a correlative analysis with age‐0 and adult Winter Flounder. Despite decreases in fishing mortality within the pond, there has been no recovery within the Point Judith Pond subpopulation—a shared response across the stock unit. Although it is possible that an increase in predators of eggs, age‐0 Winter Flounder, and spawning adults may be hindering the recovery of this subpopulation, other characteristics, such as water quality, habitat degradation, and prey availability, may also be important contributing factors. The survival rates of age‐0 Winter Flounder through their first summer appear to have been relatively unchanged over the course of the research, but there has been a contraction in both the spawning period and the maximum size of adult female Winter Flounder in the study area. By the time a fishing moratorium was implemented in Point Judith Pond, Winter Flounder abundance was already below time series historic minimums. With fishing pressure seemingly no longer regulating population size, other management strategies must be developed to address natural mortality and habitat degradation. Impact StatementDespite two decades of monitoring multiple life stages of a Winter Flounder subpopulation within a single coastal lagoon under limited fishing pressure, identification of the biotic and abiotic bottlenecks to population recovery remains elusive. Environmentally explicit models can improve model performance and our understanding of biological processes. However, these models must be retested over time, as the mechanisms influencing biological processes can change. The relationship between recently settled young‐of‐year (i.e., settlers) and pre‐recruit American lobsters was revisited to determine if our perception on post‐settlement lobster processes has changed. Analyses were focused within the southern region of the species' latitudinal range (Rhode Island, United States), where several environmental factors have been theorized to contribute to the Southern New England stock decline and continued depleted state. The inclusion of additional, recent years' data provided insight on how the density‐dependent nature of the settler–pre‐recruit lobster relationship has varied over time. Including both new and retested environmental drivers reaffirmed the importance of incorporating environmental data when describing this process. Specifically, modeling revealed the importance of epizootic shell disease, finfish predators, and Asian shore crabs in the settler–pre‐recruit relationship. Including disease, predation, and competition metrics in the lobster post‐settlement relationship has allowed for improved modeling and insight into settlement dynamics. This renewed analysis supports reevaluating environmentally explicit models over time and calls for further directed research regarding the biological processes we seek to model with time series data. The catch efficiency of a hydraulic dredge was tested on a population of the northern quahog Mercenaria mercenaria in Narragansett Bay, RI, to understand gear limitations and correct relative abundance time series data. In 2017 and 2018, 45 hydraulic dredge tows were conducted following a long-standing fisheries-independent survey protocol, with the dredge transects inspected on SCUBA to assess dredge catch efficiency. Bull raking and quadrat samples taken on SCUBA were also conducted alongside the transects to compare sampling methods. The average dredge catch efficiency across samples was 0.64 ([+ or -]0.29 SD). Bottom type was the most significant determinant of dredge catch efficiency, with higher catch efficiency on hard bottom (0.73 efficiency) than on soft bottom (0.48 efficiency). The quadrat and bull rake samples reflected higher catch rates than the dredge, but relationships between relative abundance estimates from the alternate methods and the dredge were either weak or insignificant. Bottom type, sediment classification, depth, and observed abundance were used to model dredge catch efficiencies and predict fisheries-independent abundance indices to more accurate estimates. Applying corrections using a generalized linear model scaled abundances through time, with trends generally the same between time series both with and without the corrections applied. This work provides an example of addressing gear efficiency concerns through diverse collaborations and improving the science and management for a commercially and recreationally significant marine resource. Tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (TDF) is increasingly used in the highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) regimens of pregnant women, but limited data exist on the pregnancy pharmacokinetics of chronically dosed TDF. This study described tenofovir pharmacokinetics during pregnancy and postpartum. Methods: International Maternal Pediatric and Adolescent AIDS Clinical Trials (IMPAACT) P1026s is a prospective, nonblinded pharmacokinetic study of HIV-infected pregnant women that included a cohort receiving 300mg TDF once daily. Steady-state 24-hour pharmacokinetic profiles were measured at the second and third trimesters, postpartum, and in maternal and umbilical cord samples collected at delivery. Tenofovir was measured by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS). The target area under the concentration versus time curve from time 0 to 24h post dose (AUC) was ≥1.99μg h/mL (nonpregnant historical control 10th percentile). Results: The median tenofovir AUC was decreased during the second (1.9μg h/mL) and third (2.4μg h/mL; P=0.005) trimesters versus postpartum (3.0μg h/mL). Tenofovir AUC exceeded the target for two of four women (50%) in the second trimester, 27 of 37 women [73%; 95% confidence interval (CI) 56%, 86%] in the third trimester, and 27 of 32 women (84%; 95% CI 67%, 95%) postpartum (P>0.05). Median second/third-trimester troughs were lower (39/54ng/mL) than postpartum (61ng/mL). Median third-trimester weight was greater for subjects below the target AUC versus those above the target (97.9 versus 74.2kg, respectively; P=0.006). The median ratio of cord blood to maternal concentrations was 0.88. No infants were HIV infected. Conclusions: This study found lower tenofovir AUC and troughs during pregnancy. Transplacental passage with chronic TDF use during pregnancy was high. Standard TDF doses appear to be appropriate for most HIV-infected pregnant women but therapeutic drug monitoring with dose adjustment should be considered in pregnant women with high weight (>90kg) or inadequate HIV RNA response.

In this scenario, open magnetic flux undergoes continuous reconnection and the wind is driven both by the resulting plasma pressure and the radial Alfvenic flow bursts., 15 pages, 4 figures.
