Abstract

Smartphones can increase productivity and ease accessing information, however the possible negative implications for high smartphone use or problematic smartphone use (PSU) are not fully understood. The current study examined anxiety-linked memory and attention deficits to determine whether PSU moderates these relationships. Cross-sectional data from 506 young adults aged 18–29 years (68% female) were analysed in separate regression models to investigate whether PSU (Mobile Phone Problem Use scale) moderated the relationship between state and trait anxiety (State-Cognitive and Trait-Cognitive subscales of State Trait Inventory for Cognitive and Somatic Anxiety) and everyday memory and attentional failures (the False Triggering, Forgetfulness and Distractibility subscales of the Cognitive Failures Questionnaire). Our results showed that PSU moderated the combined influence of state and trait anxiety for distractibility, such that those who reported higher PSU and higher trait anxiety reported greater errors of distractibility during higher, but not lower state anxiety. However, our predictions for false triggering and forgetfulness were not supported; the only significant finding was a trend for higher trait anxiety to be related to increased failures of false triggering and forgetfulness. 6. Role of fungal pathogen Ophiostoma novo-ulmi in semiochemical-mediated host selection by the native elm bark beetle, Hylurgopinus rufipes (Coleoptera: Scolytidae)

Abstract

Dutch elm disease (DED) is caused by the fungal pathogen Ophiostoma novoulmi which is transmitted by the native elm bark beetle, Hylurgopinus rufipes. We have found that four semiochemicals [(-)-P-pinene, (-)-a-cubebene, (+)-spiroaxa-5,7-diene and (+)-&cadinenel from diseased American elms, Ulmus americana, synergistically attract H. rufipes, and that their emission is up-regulated in elm trees inoculated with 0. novo-ulmi. The fungus thus manipulates host trees to enhance their apparency to foraging beetles, a strategy that increases the probability of transportation of the pathogen to new hosts.

9. An Unexpectedly Progressed Lumbar Herniated Disk

Abstract

The authors describe a case of a 26-year-old female military veteran who presented with low back pain that she attributed to a recent foot injury. The patient reported a history of lumbar pain while in the military that had been treated successfully with high-velocity, low-amplitude osteopathic manipulative treatment. The patient's current pain was improved with osteopathic manipulative treatment and gait correction. Several weeks after her initial presentation, the patient reported that she had had a herniated disk diagnosed 2 years earlier by means of magnetic resonance imaging. Updated magnetic resonance imaging was performed, the results of which revealed a large herniated disk that had caused severe stenosis. The patient was immediately referred to a neurosurgeon for consultation and subsequently underwent surgical treatment.

Abstract

Effective models for the management and evaluation of information technology are developing. However, evidence suggests more emphasis should be placed on customer value. Customer value is the relative significance of the attributes of a given service or product compared to the price. The role of technology has become central to business function in a large number of organisations and the effectiveness of technology in delivering customer value directly impacts on the success of the firm. To provide a basis for the argument that more consideration should be paid to customer value an outline of the background to technology management is provided. Models and characteristics of information technology are presented to illustrate current issues and thinking. Competitive pressures require that companies receive maximum value from large-scale investments in information technology. Arguments for considering why customer value should play a role in the management and evaluation of information technology investments are discussed. Customer value analysis techniques provide valuable insights into the needs and wants of customers and when linked to internal measures can provide powerful management tools. The development of systems that capture customer information is an area of rapid growth as companies seek to improve their customer knowledge. A case study is used to illustrate the techniques and the application of customer value analysis. The case study illustrates how customer value analysis is used to select among competing IT projects by showing which projects contribute the most to customer value. The case study also shows how customer value is linked to internal systems to facilitate day to day management. In conclusion important management considerations and potential gains from giving weight to customer value are discussed. Successful management of information technology in an organisation is a driver for ensuring value and effectiveness from investment in technology.
