The pearl perch (Glaucosoma scapulare) is endemic to the east coast of Australia in depths to 150 m. The species has a long history of exploitation, and the stock is currently depleted. Previous research indicated the species is long lived and slow growing based on fishery-dependent sampling undertaken in the late 1990s and early 2000s on traditional fishing grounds at the southern end of the species’ range. Increasing fishing power has facilitated the expansion of the fishery to areas to the north and east of traditional grounds, which has resulted in the appearance of older fish (>10 yr) in fishery-dependent samples not previously observed. The current study estimated the growth parameters using 1153 length-at-age observations from fish collected in Queensland between January 2020 and December 2021. The lack of significant numbers of individuals at either end of the age frequency distribution necessitated the estimation of growth in a Bayesian framework with informative priors for length-at-age-zero and maximum length using a multi-model approach. The von Bertalanffy growth function (VBGF) was found to best fit the observed length-at-age data and the estimated VBGF parameters were L∞ = 562 mm FL, L0 = 2.02 mm FL and k = 0.295 yr−1. The high proportion of older fish in samples, combined with prior information on relevant parameters, improves growth parameter estimation by reducing bias and facilitating improved model fits to observed length-at-age data.

Pearl perch (Glaucosoma scapulare) are endemic to the east coast of Australia and have a long history of exploitation. Recent stock assessments indicate that the current rate of fishing mortality is unsustainable in the long term. To better inform the management of the pearl perch stock and to address gaps in our understanding of their reproductive biology, we investigated patterns in gonad development and estimated length- and age-at-maturity and batch fecundity from females collected from southern and central Queensland waters between 2018 and 2022. The mean gonadosomatic index (GSI) varied both temporally and spatially, with maxima in the austral autumn in southern Queensland and in summer in central Queensland, coinciding with sea surface temperatures between 25.26 and 26.32 degrees Celcius. The length- and age-at-maturity of females were 353mm (fork length, FL) and 4.42 years, respectively, and batch fecundity (B) was correlated to FL such that Ln(B)=2.45xLn(FL)+3.90. Our results will inform a management strategy to recover the stock to acceptable levels of exploitation.

Researchers from Queensland’s Department of Agriculture and Fisheries, James Cook University, and the University of Western Australia tested a range of otolith-based and genetic methods to identify hatchery-born from wild-born Barramundi. The project took place in the Dry Tropics region, where extensive historical and ongoing impoundment stocking (release of hatchery-born Barramundi into freshwater bodies) may be contributing to the downstream wild-capture marine and estuarine fishery. Fish samples were collected from the commercial and recreational wild-capture marine and estuarine fishery in 2019 and 2020, following the major Townsville floods in February 2019. The team identified a cost-effective means of using trace elements in fish otoliths to reliably distinguish hatchery-origin from wild-origin fish, measure the contribution of stocked fish to the wild population, and assess the sustainability of the wild-capture fishery.

Saucer scallops (Ylistrum balloti) were tagged and released on four occasions inside two areas closed to fishing (Hervey Bay A, HBA; and Yeppoon B, YB) on the Queensland (Australia) east coast and their subsequent recaptures over the following months were used to measure the instantaneous rate of natural mortality (M). A total of 13,295 scallops were tagged and 526 recaptured over the 15 month-long experiment (May 2018 to August 2019). Three statistical approaches were applied to the experimental design and analysis of the tagging data, based on 1) the Brownie model, 2) a modified version of the Brownie model, and 3) a binomial logistic regression model of recaptures. Estimates of M based on the Brownie model were much higher for tagged scallops that were at liberty over summer months compared to those at liberty over the winter months, possibly indicating seasonal variation. The logistic model parameter estimates indicated the proportion of recaptures differed significantly with the lunar phase at recapture, scallop size class, the number of days the scallops were at liberty and the interaction between days-at-liberty and closure. All three approaches indicated M was higher in HBA compared to YB. Mean estimates of M for the whole fishery, derived by averaging estimates from both closures, ranged from a minimum of 1.461 year–1 for the logistic model, to 1.501 year–1 for the Brownie model, to 1.548 year–1 (variable recapture rate) and 1.594 year–1 (fixed recapture rate) for the modified Brownie model. Estimates from all three approaches were higher than the previous estimate that was published over 40 years ago and possible reasons for the increase are discussed.

The eastern shovelnose ray (Aptychotrema rostrata) is a medium-sized coastal batoid endemic to the eastern coast of Australia. It is the most common elasmobranch incidentally caught in the Queensland east coast otter trawl fishery, Australia’s largest penaeid-trawl fishery. Despite this, age and growth studies on this species are lacking. The present study estimated the growth parameters and age-at-maturity for A. rostrata on the basis of sampling conducted in southern Queensland, Australia. This study showed that A. rostrata exhibits slow growth and late maturity, which are common life-history strategies among elasmobranchs. Length-at-age data were analysed within a Bayesian framework and the von Bertalanffy growth function (VBGF) best described these data. The growth parameters were estimated as L0 = 193 mm TL, k = 0.08 year–1 and L∞ = 924 mm TL. Age-at-maturity was found to be 13.3 years and 10.0 years for females and males respectively. The under-sampling of larger, older individuals was overcome by using informative priors, reducing bias in the growth and maturity estimates. As such, the results can be used to derive estimates of natural mortality for this species.

This research was undertaken on the Queensland saucer scallop (Ylistrum balloti) fishery in southeast Queensland, which is an important component of the Queensland East Coast Otter Trawl Fishery (QECOTF). The research was undertaken by a collaborative team from the Queensland Department of Agriculture and Fisheries, James Cook University (JCU) and the Centre for Applications in Natural Resource Mathematics (CARM), University of Queensland and focused on 1) an annual fishery-independent trawl survey of scallop abundance, 2) relationships between scallop abundance and physical properties of the seafloor, and 3) deriving an updated estimate of the scallop’s natural mortality rate. The scallop fishery used to be one of the state’s most valuable commercially fished stocks with the annual catch peak at just under 2000 t (adductor muscle meat-weight) in 1993 valued at about $30 million, but in recent years the stock has declined and is currently considered to be overfished. Results from the study are used to improve monitoring, stock assessment and management advice for the fishery.

Post-trawl survival (PTS) is an important metric used in determining the ecological risk posed by prawn (shrimp) trawling on discarded elasmobranchs. Despite this, PTS of elasmobranchs is poorly understood. The present study quantified the PTS of two small batoids caught incidentally by prawn trawlers in southern Queensland, Australia, namely the common stingaree (Trygonoptera testacea) and the eastern shovelnose ray (Aptychotrema rostrata). Field studies using on-board tanks revealed that A. rostrata were more resilient to trawl capture and release than T. testacea. For both species, survival was found to increase with size, whereas increasing time on deck resulted in lower survival. Female T. testacea were found to be more resilient than males, and increased tow duration resulted in lower survival for A. rostrata. The mean (±s.e.m.) PTS for female and male T. testacea was 33.5 ± 6.0 and 17.3 ± 5.5% respectively, compared with a mean PTS for A. rostrata of 86.8 ± 3.2%. The survival estimates derived in the present study provide an insight into the effects of trawling on these species and will improve their ecological risk assessment and management.

Pearl perch (Glaucosoma scapulare) are found commonly in sub-tropical offshore-waters along the east coast of Australia and are a valuable table fish popular with commercial and recreational fishers. The species is long-lived, up to 30 years of age, and reaches sexual maturity at between 25 and 35 cm total length. Pearl perch are predominantly line-caught and fishing is managed separately by New South Wales (NSW) and Queensland. Historical fishing data indicate that pearl perch harvests have been consistently higher from Queensland waters with 73% of the total catch landed in Queensland in 2013. Approximately 52% of the Queensland catch is taken by recreational fishers compared with 42% in NSW. In Queensland, the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries (DAF) recently classified the stock status of pearl perch as “transitional depleting” (DAF Stock Status 2015). The status raised concern in both Queensland and NSW as to whether current management arrangements are adequate to protect the sustainability of pearl perch fishery. This stock assessment incorporates data from both jurisdictions and assesses at the whole of stock level; establishes current stock status reference points including biomass and fishing pressure levels for pearl perch; and provides advice on whether additional management measures are required to reduce fishing pressure and rebuild fish stocks.

Researchers from the Queensland Government’s Department of Agriculture and Fisheries (DAF) have assessed aspects of the environmental impacts of Australia’s largest trawl fishery, the Queensland East Coast Otter Trawl Fishery (QECOTF). A suite of management measures implemented in 2001 have resulted in a reduction in discards from a peak of 87,175 tonnes in 1997 to 25,271 in 2014, or 71%. This reduction was measured using quantitative methods based on catch, fishing effort and swept area. The risk posed to elasmobranchs from trawling operations south of the Great Barrier Marine Park was also assessed using a quantitative method known as Sustainability Assessment for Fishing Effects (SAFE). Of the 47 species assessed, one, the Piked Spurdog, was found to be at high risk. A further six species were found to be at medium risk, with the remainder at low risk. These findings satisfy environmental constraints placed on the QECOTF by the Federal Government, allowing fishers to access fishing grounds within the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. Fishers are also able to continue accessing lucrative overseas markets, increasing the profitability of the fishery.

The blue swimmer crab (BSC) fishery in Queensland has undergone considerable change since its development in the middle of the 20th century. In the last 30 years the fishery has progressed to being fully fished with the expansion of crab-pot fisheries to areas outside of Moreton Bay. After the implementation of the Fisheries (East Coast Trawl) Management Plan 1999, the reported harvest from the trawl sector decreased significantly, with the commercial and recreational crab-pot sectors now accounting for the majority of the reported blue swimmer crab harvest. The commercial pot fisheries outside Moreton Bay also developed rapidly in the late 1990s. Concerns have been raised by a number of crab-pot fishers about poor economic viability under current management rules and reduced catch rates from a number of Moreton and Hervey Bay areas. This research and publication was requested by fisheries management to assess reasons for declining catch rates and profits, including evidence associated with overfishing, crab reproduction and disease, and flood events. The analyses undertaken during the current study suggested that the blue swimmer crab population was not overfished to the point where the spawning biomass was significantly reduced. However, the current levels of population size of male legal crab and fishing effort were not suitable to produce acceptable levels of catch rates for economic profit or angling quality. Analysis of the reproductive characters of the blue swimmer crab from fished areas of Moreton Bay has shown no significant changes in key indicators since research was conducted in the mid 1980’s. Similarly, the levels of fertilization of immediate post-moult female crabs have remained unchanged in the past 30 years. There was no evidence of declines in fertilization rate as all females assessed had >90% of eggs successfully developing. There was evidence to suggest a decline in the size of females, despite the fact that females are not legally fished. The

A new technique to ameliorate the effects of barotrauma was tested based on observations of pink snapper, Pagrus auratus (Forster), inadvertently piercing their everted stomach with their teeth and releasing trapped swim bladder gases. This technique was termed buccal venting and involved piercing the everted stomach protruding into the buccal cavity or out of the mouth with a 16-gauge hypodermic needle (a practice previously not encouraged). Short-term (~3 days) survival of buccal-vented fish was not significantly different from laterally vented fish nor untreated controls. Both buccal and lateral venting techniques were shown to cause no harm and allowed fish to return to depth. The short-term (1–3 days) post-release survival of line caught snapper was 88% with no significant difference in survival across three depth ranges tested (37–50, 51–100 and 101–180 m). Survival of sublegal pink snapper (<35 cm TL) was not significantly different (P > 0.05) from that of legal-sized fish (≥35 cm TL). Healing of the swim bladder was observed in 27% of pink snapper dissected after ≤3 days in captivity, and healing of stomachs was observed in 64% of pink snapper that had been buccal vented. Relatively high post-release survival rates of line caught pink snapper may offer some protection for snapper stocks where high fishing pressure and legal size restrictions result in the majority of the catch having to be released.

Post-release survival of line-caught pearl perch (Glaucosoma scapulare) was assessed via field experiments where fish were angled using methods similar to those used by commercial, recreational and charter fishers. One hundred and eighty-three individuals were caught during four experiments, of which >91% survived up to three days post-capture. Hook location was found to be the best predictor of survival, with the survival of throat- or stomach-hooked pearl perch significantly (P < 0.05) lower than those hooked in either the mouth or lip. Post-release survival was similar for both legal (≥35 cm) and sub-legal (<35 cm) pearl perch, while those individuals showing no signs of barotrauma were more likely to survive in the short term. Examination of the swim bladders in the laboratory, combined with observations in the field, revealed that swim bladders rupture during ascent from depth allowing swim bladder gases to escape into the gut cavity. As angled fish approach the surface, the alimentary tract ruptures near the anus allowing swim bladder gases to escape the gut cavity. As a result, very few pearl perch exhibit barotrauma symptoms and no barotrauma mitigation strategies were recommended. The results of this study show that pearl perch are relatively resilient to catch-and-release suggesting that post-release mortality would not contribute significantly to total fishing mortality. We recommend the use of circle hooks, fished actively on tight lines, combined with minimal handling in order to maximise the post-release survival of pearl perch.

The Carp is considered a threat to our native river fish and ecosystems by its ability to adapt to almost any fresh water body and through its feeding and breeding habits, change environmental parameters such as turbidity, light and water temperatures. This project forms part of the Invasive Animal CRC's freshwater program and is part of a strategy to develop control measures for carp. The age and size at maturity for carp in the northern part of their range (ie. Queensland) is currently unknown.

The estuaries of Australia s tropical rivers support commercial fisheries for finfish and shellfish valued at over $220 million per annum. There are also significant tourism-related and local recreational and indigenous fisheries for icon species such as barramundi. Development of water resources in Australia's Tropical Rivers region is being considered for the Flinders, Mitchell, McArthur, Roper, Daly and Victoria catchments. Greater knowledge of the freshwater requirements of tropical aquatic ecosystems, including estuaries is crucial, so that the communities of catchments where water resource development occurs can be assured that the downstream effects of such development are considered and managed based on the best available knowledge.

Promotion of better procedures for releasing undersize fish, advocacy of catch-and-release angling, and changing minimum legal sizes are increasingly being used as tools for sustainable management of fish stocks. However without knowing the proportion of released fish that survive, the conservation value of any of these measures is uncertain. We developed a floating vertical enclosure to estimate short-term survival of released line-caught tropical and subtropical reef-associated species, and used it to compare the effectiveness of two barotrauma-relief procedures (venting and shotline releasing) on red emperor (Lutjanus sebae). Barotrauma signs varied with capture depth, but not with the size of the fish. Fish from the greatest depths (40-52 m) exhibited extreme signs less frequently than did those from intermediate depths (30-40 m), possibly as a result of swim bladder gas being vented externally through a rupture in the body wall. All but two fish survived the experiment, and as neither release technique significantly improved short-term survival of the red emperor over non-treatment we see little benefit in promoting either venting or shotline releasing for this comparatively resilient species. Floating vertical enclosures can improve short-term post-release mortality estimates as they overcome many problems encountered when constraining fish in submerged cages.

The Queensland Great Barrier Reef line fishery in Australia is regulated via a range of input and output controls including minimum size limits, daily catch limits and commercial catch quotas. As a result of these measures a substantial proportion of the catch is released or discarded. The fate of these released fish is uncertain, but hook-related mortality can potentially be decreased by using hooks that reduce the rates of injury, bleeding and deep hooking. There is also the potential to reduce the capture of non-target species though gear selectivity. A total of 1053 individual fish representing five target species and three non-target species were caught using six hook types including three hook patterns (non-offset circle, J and offset circle), each in two sizes (small 4/0 or 5/0 and large 8/0). Catch rates for each of the hook patterns and sizes varied between species with no consistent results for target or non-target species. When data for all of the fish species were aggregated there was a trend for larger hooks, J hooks and offset circle hooks to cause a greater number of injuries. Using larger hooks was more likely to result in bleeding, although this trend was not statistically significant. Larger hooks were also more likely to foul-hook fish or hook fish in the eye. There was a reduction in the rates of injuries and bleeding for both target and non-target species when using the smaller hook sizes. For a number of species included in our study the incidence of deep hooking decreased when using non-offset circle hooks, however, these results were not consistent for all species. Our results highlight the variability in hook performance across a range of tropical demersal finfish species. The most obvious conservation benefits for both target and non-target species arise from using smaller sized hooks and non-offset circle hooks. Fishers should be encouraged to use these hook configurations to reduce the potential for post-release mortality of released fish

Six species of line-caught coral reef fish (Plectropomus spp., Lethrinus miniatus, Lethrinus laticaudis, Lutjanus sebae, Lutjanus malabaricus and Lutjanus erythropterus) were tagged by members of the Australian National Sportsfishing Association (ANSA) in Queensland between 1986 and 2003. Of the 14,757 fish tagged, 1607 were recaptured and we analysed these data to describe movement and determine factors likely to impact release survival. All species were classified as residents since over 80% of recaptures for each species occurred within 1 km of the release site. Few individuals (range 0.8-5%) were recaptured more than 20 km from their release point. L. sebae had a higher recapture rate (19.9%) than the other species studied (range 2.1-11.7%). Venting swimbladder gases, regardless of whether or not fish appeared to be suffering from barotrauma, significantly enhanced (P < 0.05) the survival of L. sebae and L. malabaricus but had no significant effect (P > 0.05) on L. erythropterus. The condition of fish on release, subjectively assessed by anglers, was only a significant effect on recapture rate for L. sebae where fish in "fair" condition had less than half the recapture rate of those assessed as in "excellent" or "good" condition. The recapture rate of L. sebae and L. laticaudis was significantly (P < 0.05) affected by depth with recapture rate declining in depths exceeding 30 m. Overall, the results showed that depth of capture, release condition and treatment for barotrauma influenced recapture rate for some species but these effects were not consistent across all species studied. Recommendations were made to the ANSA tagging clubs to record additional information such as injury, hooking location and hook type to enable a more comprehensive future assessment of the factors influencing release survival.

The species composition and distribution of seagrass in The Broadwater were mapped in January 1997 and compared with historical records. Three species of seagrass (Zostera capricorni, Halophila ovalis and Halophila spinulosa) were identified and were more widely distributed than in a previous study conducted ten years earlier (304 hectares compared with 180 hectares). In general, Z. capricorni was dominant to a depth of 0.7 m (below MLS) and H. ovalis or H. spinulosa dominated from 0.7 to 2 m. Mixed and pure plots of seagrass (Z. capricorni and H. ovalis) transplanted into an artificially disturbed habitat survived and grew over a 6 month study period but the overall survival of transplanted plots was less than fifty percent. Natural colonisation of the area was observed, with H. spinulosa (a species not even transplanted) found in high densities eight months after the area was disturbed. Seagrass transplantation in The Broadwater was not advised, due to its high costs, lack of effectiveness, damage to donor sites and the observed natural colonisation of suitable sites.
