The name Arctotis plantagineaL. was published by Linnaeus in Species plantarumed. 2, but application of this name has been uncertain and no original elements or illustrations can be traced. Consequently, it is still untypified. In early applications the name was applied to specimens of at least five species until Thunberg unequivocally applied the name to an element of the species currently known as A. semipapposa(DC.) Beauverd. Subsequently, A. plantagineahas been placed as a synonym of A. semipapposa, but it has nomenclatural priority over the latter name. In order to maintain nomenclatural stability, we herein designate a neotype for A. plantaginea, which results in its falling into the synonymy of A. angustifoliaL., thus preserving usage of the well-established name A. semipapposa. Names in the A. semipapposaspecies complex are typified and nomenclatural issues concerning some of the names are resolved. In addition, A. macrosperma(DC.) Beauverd is placed in the synonymy of A. semipapposa.

In a recent floristic treatment, Haplocarpha thunbergiiLess. was considered to be the correct name for H. scaposa Harv. The name H. thunbergiiis a substitute name for Arctotis lanataThunb. Examination of the original material in the Thunberg herbarium proved that Thunberg based the name A. lanataon three specimens each belonging to different species (those currently known as A. acaulisL., H. lanataLess. and H. parvifolia(Schltr.) Beauverd). Our identifications of these specimens proved that the names A. lanataand H. scaposaare not conspecific and H. scaposais not a homotypic synonym of H. thunbergii. Herein a lectotype for H. scaposais designated from the syntypes specified by Harvey. With the objective of maintaining nomenclatural stability, we lectotypify A. lanataand place it in synonymy of A. acaulis, thus preserving usage of the name H. parvifolia. An updated synonymy for A. acaulisis provided. In addition, lectotypes are designated for A. fosteriN.E. Br., A. oocephalaDC., A. parvifoliaSchltr., H. lyrataHarv. and H. transvaalensisGand.

A lectotype is designated for the name Venidium subacauleDC. based on a specimen in Candolle's Prodromus Herbarium, which replaces the neotype previously designated for this name. As a result of the revised typification, V. subacauleis not now a threat to usage of the name V. hirsutumHarv. (and the combination Arctotis hirsuta(Harv.) Beauverd). In addition, an epitype is designated for the name Venidium erosumHarv., which becomes a synonym of Arctotis subacaulis(DC.) Beauverd.
