2. Reducing Underage Drinking through Visible Home Visits by Law Enforcement: An Efficacy Case Study over 29 Months

Abstract

This paper describes the development and impact of an underage drinking reduction program designed and implemented by a South Carolina county sheriff's office with assistance from the county coalition. In December 2017, high school surveys identified family and friends as the alcohol source 82.2% of the time. In Summer 2018, sheriff deputies began visiting with almost all high school seniors, i.e., 1,352 high school senior visits. Deputies reminded parents to not provide alcohol to anyone under 21 years old. School surveys were conducted pre-program (December 2017), during (April 2018 and September 2018) and post-program (April 2020). Comparing the pre-effort results with post surveys found a 22.8% decline in 30-day drinking (p=0.01) and a 23.5% decrease in binge drinking (p=0.07). As described by Holder et al., the results provide the foundation for replication under controlled research conditions.

4. Learners as Teachers--Teachers as Learners: A Collaborative Approach to Develop Skills in GIS Education

Abstract

A geographic information system (GIS) can be defined as a computer-based system that enables the collection, management, analysis, visualization, and sharing of spatial data. As this technology is a fundamental and fast-growing part of the global economy, there is a growing global demand for a skilled workforce that can use it to address an array of spatial issues. However, while there is potential to embed GIS as a commonplace tool in schools, doing so has been a perennial challenge, with an array of obstacles to overcome, and support for those "intrepid souls" who pioneer GIS use in schools is needed. Universities may have a part to play in this. This paper describes the authors' experiences of a multipartner approach whereby GIS students (undergraduates pursuing Geography and Environmental Science degrees who are enrolled for GIS classes), under the guidance of tutors, collaborate with preservice and in-service geography teachers to prepare and deliver GIS activities in classrooms.

Abstract

This paper examines the spatial and social differences in people's lack of access to adequate energy and transport services in the UK. We respond to the need for developing a differentiated understanding of both the drivers and expressions of this ‘double energy vulnerability’ (DEV), while seeking to integrate and analyse relevant information from all four UK nations. Using a variety of statistically representative census and survey datasets, the paper develops a series of multi‐dimensional indices to map transport‐ and energy‐related injustices. This is followed by a cluster analysis to examine broad‐level geographical patterns, and a Geographically Weighted Regression (GWR) model to explore the spatial variation of vulnerabilities related to contingencies such as income, ethnicity and housing. The paper corroborates the results of previous qualitative studies, and research within selected UK nations, while revealing several unexpected territorial clusters and underpinnings of infrastructural injustice. DEV is shown to disproportionately affect coastal, highland, peripheral and rural regions, with an internal granularity that exhibits high levels of variation within urban and peri‐urban settings. 13. Chronic low back pain and insomnia : understanding the experience and attributions made by out-patients about sleeplessness, pain and their interaction

Abstract

Systematic Review: Chronic pain and insomnia are highly comorbid, and evidence suggests a reciprocal relationship between these. CBT-I has been shown to improve sleep in those with chronic pain, therefore the potential of improved sleep leading to improvements in pain symptoms is a possibility. This led to the question: Does CBT-I improve pain symptoms in those with chronic pain and insomnia? A systematic review of the literature was conducted resulting in eight papers regarding six studies. Evidence was moderate that CBT-I improved sleep and pain related disability, but did not improve self reported pain levels. This discrepancy between improvements in pain related disability and no changes in self-reported pain levels led to the research question for the empirical element of the current thesis. Empirical Element of Thesis Objective: Chronic low back pain (CLBP) is a common form of chronic pain that affects a large population each year. Chronic pain and insomnia are highly comorbid conditions, yet knowledge about how patients perceive their interaction is limited. This qualitative study aims to inform our understanding of the patient experience with particular reference to beliefs and attributions surrounding pain, poor sleep and their interaction. Methods: 11 outpatients from a chronic pain clinic were recruited who suffered CLBP as their main symptom, and who had subsequently developed insomnia as a result. Data were analysed using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA). Results: Qualitative analysis produced five super-ordinate themes: 1) the privacy of pain and solitude of sleep; 2) sleep/pain interaction; 3) night-time thinking; 4) adjustment and acceptance; and 5) self-management. Discussion: The first three themes combine to create the individual experience of CLBP: the visceral, emotional experience; the pre-existing and shifting beliefs; and the thought content. Once this is in place, the individual can reflect on what this means to them, and through acceptance, move through to adjustment. The individual accepts elements of their current experience, but where they see the opportunity to take control, these adjustments are translated into actions relating to self-management. These themes suggest CBT-I should be adapted to include pain specific beliefs to form a CBT for Insomnia and Chronic Pain (‘CBT-CPI’).
