Abstract

This paper presents an overview of emerging research at the Manifest Data Lab a collective of artists and climate scientists who employ climate data experimentally in public settings. We discuss one of our projects The Carbon Chronicles, a reverse-engineered climate data set, projected on prominent public buildings in London during the period of COP26. Our approach examines the potential of climate data visualisations to operate as a public form that surface issues of climate justice and historic responsibilities. We report on the project’s methodological framing, production and associated artistic strategies.

23. General Surgery Twitter during COVID-19: Tweets, Trends, and Implications for Recruitment Strategies

Abstract

Background The COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted traditional resident recruitment practices, requiring virtual interviews and new forms of outreach. Social media, such as Twitter, is one tool programs can use to connect with applicants. This study sought to assess changes in Twitter use during the COVID-19 pandemic among general surgery programs.Methods Twitter and residency program websites were queried for public Twitter accounts related to general surgery residency programs. Publicly available tweets for available accounts were reviewed for all posts for the period March 15, 2019-November 25, 2020. Thematic analysis of each tweet was performed, and engagement was determined by likes and retweets on each tweet.Results The number of programs with active Twitter accounts increased after the onset of COVID-19 pandemic, as did the number of tweets, likes-, and retweets-per-tweet. There was a significant increase in the number of tweets regarding resident promotion, program promotion, and virtual event promotion. Tweets received more likes-per-tweet if the subject was program promotion and resident promotion than tweets regarding virtual events. All results were statistically significant (P< .05).Discussion Twitter use and engagement with residency programs have increased significantly since pandemic onset. Engagement is highest for tweets regarding program and resident promotion as measured by likes-per-tweet and highest for program promotion and virtual events as measured by retweets-per-tweet. Given the nearly nationwide increase in Twitter engagement after pandemic onset, programs should consider the impact of Twitter as a means of communication with applicants and program branding.

Abstract

The article focuses on politician Henry David Thoreau's rejection of the value of politics for life, which gave way to his most intriguing and obliging contributions to political theory. It is inferred that Thoreau's reputation as a political thinker has been solidified by an invoked belief that his moral and ethical thought is a way of disputing mass democratic political participation. The author also contends that Thoreau was part of the creation and maintenance of a philosophy of conduct grounded on individuated virtue.

Abstract

Background and Objectives: Functional and cognitive impairment correlates with medical outcomes in older persons, yet documentation in the medical record is often inadequate. The purpose of this pilot study was to evaluate fourth year (M4) medical students' charting performance of cognition and functional status in older persons during non-geriatric clerkships using an audit tool. Methods: The research assistants used a chart abstracting tool to retrospectively review patients' charts. The abstracting tool contained keywords and phrases to prompt the research assistants to look for any documentation of patient status in four domains: (1) delirium or acute confusional state, (2) chronic cognitive impairment, (3) activities of daily living, and (4) instrumental activities of daily living. The threshold was any mention of keywords in these domains. Results: On non-geriatrics M4 clerkships in the hospital, students documented acute cognitive status (ACS) and presence or absence of chronic cognitive impairment (CCI) in 57% and 68% of cases respectively, with physicians and/or nurses doing it more often at 63% and 84%. Both students and other care providers documented ACS and CCI in the same charts 41% and 59% of the time, respectively. Students documented activities of daily living (ADLs) and instrumental activities of daily living (IADLs) 31% and 3% respectively, physicians and/or nurses 59% and 0%. Conclusions: Documentation of cognitive status in hospital charts for students and physicians was somewhat higher than in the literature. This may be because geriatrics is integrated into our 4-year curriculum. Documentation by both students and physicians was better for ADLs than IADLs and poor for IADLs overall. 39. Occurrence and genetic diversity of lemon sharks (Negaprion brevirostris) at a nursery ground at the Chandeleur Islands, Louisiana.

Abstract

Anecdotal evidence suggested that immature lemon sharks (Negaprion brevirostris) occur at the Chandeleur Islands in southeastern Louisiana. From May 2009 to August 2011, the Nekton Research Laboratory at the University of New Orleans regularly sampled habitats at the Chandeleur Islands to confirm the presence of immature individuals of this species. During these efforts, 147 immature lemon sharks (neonates, young-of-the-year, and juveniles) were collected. Each shark was PIT tagged and a tissue sample was taken for genetic analyses. Sizes ranged from 56 – 177 cm total length. Sharks showed a preference for sandy substrate and smaller individuals showed significant preference for shallow waters. Collection data for N. brevirostris were obtained from various locations around the Gulf of Mexico for comparison. Based on a review of current literature, collection data, and microsatellite analysis it was possible to classify the Chandeleur Islands as an elasmobranch nursery ground under the definition presented by Huepel et al. (2007). Current literature and high densities of N. brevirostris suggests that the Chandeleur Islands are the only area in the northern Gulf of Mexico where neonatal and YOY lemon sharks have been recorded. Results from a combination of SPOT 5 satellite tags, PIT tags, and FLOY tags show that immature N. brevirostris at the Chandeleur Islands remain in the vicinity of the islands for several months. The abundance of juvenile sharks across years provides evidence of continuous use of these islands as a pupping area. Genetic analysis supports this information with 7 of 15 mothers returning across years. The combination of this information indicates that the Chandeleur Islands are the northern- and western-most documented nursery ground for this species. Special care should be given to this habitat as CPUE for N. brevirostris decreased significantly during this research following the 2010 Deepwater Horizon disaster and subsequent oil prevention measures. Genetic research indicates a high level of inbreeding and genetic separation between the Chandeleur Islands population and other known populations in Florida, Belize, and the Bahamas.
