Nursing faculty with expertise in community health are well poised to introduce nursing students to the rewarding experience of caring for vulnerable populations. Multiple partnerships have been established over the years within the central Connecticut region that have benefited both the university's nursing students and the affiliated agency, as well as the individuals served. Utilizing knowledge related to the common health issues faced by the homeless population, faculty worked with community partners to discuss needs and create a plan involving nursing students, which specifically focused on vision and foot health.

Background: Early identification of a transfusion-associated adverse event (TAAE) is key to patient safety. Research has indicated that use of a TAAE checklist resulted in greater frequency of TAAE recognition behaviors. Purpose: To explore whether use of a TAAE checklist resulted in greater frequency of TAAE recognition behaviors among nursing students. Methods: A prospective, randomized controlled study was conducted with 62 nursing students playing the role of a registered nurse in a simulation of a patient exhibiting clinical indicators of a TAAE. Subjects were randomly assigned to have or not have a TAAE checklist. Time to recognition of the TAAE was measured. Results: The checklist group (CG) identified TAAEs on average 4 minutes sooner than the non-CG (P <.001). CG subjects were also significantly less likely to miss TAAEs completely. Conclusions: A checklist may improve the safety of transfusions by promoting earlier recognition and treatment of TAAEs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: The purpose of this study was to evaluate a teaching strategy that engaged baccalaureate maternity nursing students at two universities in a postpartum hemorrhage escape room. The study examined students' attainment of knowledge, as well as teamwork, collaboration, communication, and safety. Method: A mixed method study was conducted with 85 junior-level and senior-level maternity students at two universities in the Northeastern region of the United States. Participants completed a survey and attended one of 20 focus groups after completion of a healthcare simulation escape room on postpartum hemorrhage. Results: Participants (95.2%) reported that the escape room helped with knowledge and skill acquisition. All of the participants reported that it was an effective team building strategy and 97.6% said it fostered communication, learning, and the ability to provide safe patient care. Participants unanimously reported that the escape room was enjoyable, an effective strategy for team building, and they would recommend it to others. Qualitative findings showed six major themes: It was Fun!, No I in Team, Escaping to Learn: Building Knowledge and Confidence, Pressure Cooker, Big Picture, and Lessons Learned. Conclusion: Healthcare simulation escape rooms are an effective teaching strategy and can be used by nursing faculty to foster knowledge, teamwork, collaboration, communication and safety. This study analyzes the expectations that incoming students and faculty bring to accelerated prelicensure education programs for second-degree students. Although research supports the congruence of expectations between students and faculty as essential to learning, anecdotal evidence and single case reports suggest there may be important discrepancies in expectations of second-degree students and their faculty. The purpose of this study was to develop a metastory of nonbiological lesbian mothers' postpartum experiences utilizing Riessman's structural approach to thematic analysis. Ten nonbirth lesbian mothers were interviewed. Each shared a unique story of her first year of motherhood. Themes were individually analyzed within each story. The metastory of the postpartum experiences of nonbirth lesbian mothers revealed 6 themes including the following: At the mercy of health care providers, Nursing is the major difference between us, Defined by who I am not, Fighting for every piece of motherhood: The world can take them away, What's in a name?, and Epilogue: The new normal.
