GPT-4o is an autoregressive omni model that accepts as input any combination of text, audio, image, and video, and generates any combination of text, audio, and image outputs. It's trained end-to-end across text, vision, and audio, meaning all inputs and outputs are processed by the same neural network. GPT-4o can respond to audio inputs in as little as 232 milliseconds, with an average of 320 milliseconds, which is similar to human response time in conversation. It matches GPT-4 Turbo performance on text in English and code, with significant improvement on text in non-English languages, while also being much faster and 50\% cheaper in the API. GPT-4o is especially better at vision and audio understanding compared to existing models. In line with our commitment to building AI safely and consistent with our voluntary commitments to the White House, we are sharing the GPT-4o System Card, which includes our Preparedness Framework evaluations. In this System Card, we provide a detailed look at GPT-4o's capabilities, limitations, and safety evaluations across multiple categories, focusing on speech-to-speech while also evaluating text and image capabilities, and measures we've implemented to ensure the model is safe and aligned. We also include third-party assessments on dangerous capabilities, as well as discussion of potential societal impacts of GPT-4o's text and vision capabilities.

We prove that the Ramsey number $R(5,5)$ is less than or equal to~$46$. The proof uses a combination of linear programming and checking a large number of cases by computer. All of the computations were independently replicated.

Comet C/2017 K2 (Pan-STARRS) provided a rare opportunity to investigate the evolution of coma composition and outgassing patterns over a transitional heliocentric distance (Rh) range where activity drivers in comets are thought to change from "hypervolatile" (CO, CH$_4$, C$_2$H$_6$, and/or CO$_2$)-dominated to H2O-dominated. We performed high-resolution, cross-dispersed, near-infrared spectroscopy of C/2017 K2 with iSHELL at the NASA Infrared Telescope Facility (IRTF) and NIRSPEC at the W. M. Keck 2 Observatory. We report gas rotational temperatures (Trot) and molecular production rates (Q; mol/s) or upper limits for the hypervolatile species CH$_4$, CO, and C$_2$H$_6$, together with less volatile ices (CH$_3$OH, H$_2$O, HCN, C$_2$H$_2$, NH$_3$, and OCS) over a range of pre-perihelion distances, Rh= 3.15 - 2.35 au. We also report (or stringently constrain) abundance ratios (mixing ratios) of the targeted species with respect to CO, C$_2$H$_6$, and (when detected) H$_2$O. All volatiles were enriched relative to water in C/2017 K2 when compared to their mean values among Oort Cloud comets, whereas abundances relative to C2H6 were consistent with their average values from other long-period comets., Comment: Submitted to the Astronomical Journal for publication

The logarithm of the number of Eulerian orientations, scaled by the number of vertices, is known as the residual entropy in studies of ice-type models on graphs. The spanning tree entropy depends similarly on the number of spanning trees. We demonstrate and investigate a remarkably strong, though non-deterministic, correlation between these two entropies. This leads us to propose a new heuristic estimate for the residual entropy of regular graphs that performs much better than previous heuristics. We also study the expansion properties and residual entropy of random graphs with given degrees.

Quantum error mitigation is a promising route to achieving quantum utility, and potentially quantum advantage in the near-term. Many state-of-the-art error mitigation schemes use knowledge of the errors in the quantum processor, which opens the question to what extent inaccuracy in the error model impacts the performance of error mitigation. In this work, we develop a methodology to efficiently compute upper bounds on the impact of error-model inaccuracy in error mitigation. Our protocols require no additional experiments, and instead rely on comparisons between the error model and the error-learning data from which the model is generated. We demonstrate the efficacy of our methodology by deploying it on an IBM Quantum superconducting qubit quantum processor, and through numerical simulation of standard error models. We show that our estimated upper bounds are typically close to the worst observed performance of error mitigation on random circuits. Our methodology can also be understood as an operationally meaningful metric to assess the quality of error models, and we further extend our methodology to allow for comparison between error models. Finally, contrary to what one might expect we show that observable error in noisy layered circuits of sufficient depth is not always maximized by a Clifford circuit, which may be of independent interest., Comment: 22 pages including references and appendices, 9 figures

Dynamic circuit operations -- measurements with feedforward -- are important components for future quantum computing efforts, but lag behind gates in the availability of characterization methods. Here we introduce a series of dynamic circuit benchmarking routines based on interleaving dynamic circuit operation blocks $F$ in one-qubit randomized benchmarking sequences of data qubits. $F$ spans between the set of data qubits and a measurement qubit and may include feedforward operations based on the measurement. We identify six candidate operation blocks, such as preparing the measured qubit in $|0\rangle$ and performing a $Z$-Pauli on the data qubit conditioned on a measurement of `1'. Importantly, these blocks provide a methodology to accumulate readout assignment errors in a long circuit sequence. We also show the importance of dynamic-decoupling in reducing ZZ crosstalk and measurement-induced phase errors during dynamic circuit blocks. When measured on an IBM Eagle device with appropriate dynamical decoupling, the results are consistent with measurement assignment error and the decoherence of the data qubit as the leading error sources.

We present a resonant-mode, transverse-field, radio-frequency (rf) neutron spin flipper design that uses high-temperature superconducting films to ensure sharp transitions between uniform magnetic field regions. Resonant mode allows for low power, high frequency operation but requires strict homogeneity of the magnetic fields inside the device. This design was found to efficiently flip neutrons at 96.6$\pm 0.6\%$ at an effective frequency of 4 MHz with a beam size of $2.5~\times~2.5$~cm and a wavelength of 0.4 nm. The high frequency and efficiency enable this device to perform high-resolution neutron spectroscopy with comparable performance to currently implemented rf flipper designs. The limitation of the maximum frequency was found due to the field homogeneity of the device. We numerically analyze the maximum possible efficiency of this design using a Bloch solver simulation with magnetic fields generated from finite-element simulations. We also discuss future improvements of the efficiency and frequency to the design based on the experimental and simulation results.

This paper considers a natural ruleset for playing a partisan combinatorial game on a directed graph, which we call Digraph Placement. Given a digraph $G$ with a not necessarily proper $2$-coloring of $V(G)$, the Digraph Placement game played on $G$ by the players Left and Right, who play alternately, is defined as follows. On her turn, Left chooses a blue vertex which is deleted along with all of its out-neighbours. On his turn Right chooses a red vertex, which is deleted along with all of its out-neighbours. A player loses if on their turn they cannot move. We show constructively that Digraph Placement is a universal partisan ruleset; for all partisan combinatorial games $X$ there exists a Digraph Placement game, $G$, such that $G = X$. Digraph Placement and many other games including Nim, Poset Game, Col, Node Kayles, Domineering, and Arc Kayles are instances of a class of placement games that we call conflict placement games. We prove that $X$ is a conflict placement game if and only if it has the same literal form as a Digraph Placement game. A corollary of this is that deciding the winner of a Digraph Placement game is PSPACE-hard. The Goos-H\"anchen (GH) shift describes a phenomenon in which a specularly-reflected beam is laterally translated along the reflecting surface such that the incident and reflected rays no longer intersect at the surface. Using a neutron spin-echo technique and a specially-designed magnetic multilayer mirror, we have measured the relative phase between the reflected up and down neutron spin states in total reflection. The relative GH shift calculated from this phase shows a strong resonant enhancement at a particular incident neutron wavevector, which is due to a waveguiding effect in one of the magnetic layers. Calculations based on the observed phase difference between the neutron states indicate a propagation distance along the waveguide layer of 0.65 mm for the spin-down state, which we identify with the magnitude of the giant GH shift. The existence of a physical GH shift is confirmed by the observation of neutron absorption in the waveguide layer. We propose ways in which our experimental method may be exploited for neutron quantum-enhanced sensing of thin magnetic layers.

We installed the next-generation automated laser adaptive optics system, Robo-AO-2, on the University of Hawaii 2.2-m telescope on Maunakea in 2023. We engineered Robo-AO-2 to deliver robotic, diffraction-limited observations at visible and near-infrared wavelengths in unprecedented numbers. This new instrument takes advantage of upgraded components, manufacturing techniques and control; and includes a parallel reconfigurable natural guide star wavefront sensor with which to explore hybrid wavefront sensing techniques. Aortic stenosis (AS) is the most common valvular heart disease in developed countries. High-fidelity preclinical models can improve AS management by enabling therapeutic innovation, early diagnosis, and tailored treatment planning. However, their use is currently limited by complex workflows necessitating lengthy expert-driven manual operations. Here, we propose an AI-powered computational framework for accelerated and democratized patient-specific modeling of AS hemodynamics from computed tomography. First, we demonstrate that our automated meshing algorithms can generate task-ready geometries for both computational and benchtop simulations with higher accuracy and 100 times faster than existing approaches. Then, we show that our approach can be integrated with fluid-structure interaction and soft robotics models to accurately recapitulate a broad spectrum of clinical hemodynamic measurements of diverse AS patients. The efficiency and reliability of these algorithms make them an ideal complementary tool for personalized high-fidelity modeling of AS biomechanics, hemodynamics, and treatment planning., Comment: CO and DHP contributed equally to this work. Here, we report the experimental demonstration of a novel multi-mode linear bus interferometer (LBI) coupler in a six qubit superconducting quantum processor. A key feature of this coupler is an engineered multi-path interference which eliminates transverse coupling between qubits over a wide frequency range. This negligible static coupling is achieved without any flux bias tuning, and greatly reduces the impact of qubit frequency collisions. We achieve good simultaneous single qubit gate operation and low ZZ rates (below 600 Hz) across the device without staggering qubit frequencies, even in cases where qubits are as close as 10 MHz. Multi-qubit interactions are still possible through the coupler using microwave-driven resonator induced phase gates, which we utilize to demonstrate simultaneous two qubit gates with fidelities as high as 99.4%

There are finitely many graphs with diameter $2$ and girth 5. What if the girth 5 assumption is relaxed? Apart from stars, are there finitely many triangle-free graphs with diameter $2$ and no $K_{2,3}$ subgraph? This question is related to the existence of triangle-free strongly regular graphs, but allowing for a range of co-degrees gives the question a more extremal flavour. More generally, for fixed $s$ and $t$, are there infinitely many twin-free triangle-free $K_{s,t}$-free graphs with diameter 2? This paper presents partial results regarding these questions, including computational results, potential Cayley-graph and probabilistic constructions.

Intra-particle entanglement of individual particles such as neutrons could enable another class of scattering probes that are sensitive to entanglement in quantum systems and materials. In this work, we present experimental results demonstrating quantum contextuality as a result of entanglement between the spin and energy modes (i.e., degrees of freedom) of single neutrons in a beam using a pair of resonant radio-frequency neutron spin flippers in the MIEZE configuration (Modulated IntEnsity with Zero Effort). We verified the mode-entanglement by measuring a Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt (CHSH) contextuality witness $S$ defined in the spin and energy subsystems, observing a clear breach of the classical bound of $|S| \leq 2$, obtaining $S = 2.40 \pm 0.02$. These entangled beams could enable alternative approaches for directly probing dynamics and entanglement in quantum materials whose low-energy excitation scales match those of the incident entangled neutron., Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures

With the increasing emphasis on machine learning and artificial intelligence to drive knowledge discovery in the agricultural sciences, spatial internet of things (IoT) technologies have become increasingly important for collecting real-time, high resolution data for these models. However, managing large fleets of devices while maintaining high data quality remains an ongoing challenge as scientists iterate from prototype to mature end-to-end applications. Here, we provide a set of case studies using the framework of technology readiness levels for an open source spatial IoT system. The spatial IoT systems underwent 3 major and 14 minor system versions, had over 2,727 devices manufactured both in academic and commercial contexts, and are either in active or planned deployment across four continents. Our results show the evolution of a generalizable, open source spatial IoT system designed for agricultural scientists, and provide a model for academic researchers to overcome the challenges that exist in going from one-off prototypes to thousands of internet-connected devices., Comment: 20 pages, 5 figures, 1 table

As an alternative to quantum error correction, quantum error mitigation methods, including Zero-Noise Extrapolation (ZNE), have been proposed to alleviate run-time errors in current noisy quantum devices. In this work, we propose a modified version of ZNE that provides for a significant performance enhancement on current noisy devices. Our modified ZNE method extrapolates to zero-noise data by evaluating groups of noisy data obtained from noise-scaled circuits and selecting extrapolation functions for each group with the assistance of estimated noisy simulation results. To quantify enhancement in a real-world quantum application, we embed our modified ZNE in Quantum Random Access Memory (QRAM) - a memory system important for future quantum networks and computers. Our new ZNE-enhanced QRAM designs are experimentally implemented on a 27-qubit noisy superconducting quantum device, the results of which demonstrate QRAM fidelity can be improved significantly relative to traditional ZNE usage. Our results demonstrate the critical role the extrapolation function plays in ZNE - judicious choice of that function on a per-measurement basis can make the difference between a quantum application being functional or non-functional.

Calcification has significant influence over cardiovascular diseases and interventions. Detailed characterization of calcification is thus desired for predictive modeling, but calcified heart meshes for physics-driven simulations are still often reconstructed using manual operations. This poses a major bottleneck for large-scale adoption of computational simulations for research or clinical use. To address this, we propose an end-to-end automated meshing algorithm that enables robust incorporation of patient-specific calcification onto a given heart mesh. The algorithm provides a substantial speed-up from several hours of manual meshing to $\sim$1 minute of automated computation, and it solves an important problem that cannot be addressed with recent template registration-based heart meshing techniques. We validated our final calcified heart meshes with extensive simulations, demonstrating our ability to accurately model patient-specific aortic stenosis and Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement. Our method may serve as an important tool for accelerating the development and usage of physics-driven simulations for cardiac digital twins.

Lopsp-operations are operations on maps that are applied locally and are guaranteed to preserve all the orientation-preserving symmetries of maps. Well-known examples of such operations are dual, ambo, truncation, and leapfrog. They are described by plane 3-coloured triangulations with specific properties. We developed and implemented a program that can generate all lopsp-operations of a given size by reducing the problem of generating lopsp-operations to generating all plane quadrangulations that are not necessarily simple. We extended the program plantri to generate these quadrangulations.

We aim at advancing our understanding of magnetic activity and the underlying dynamo mechanism at the end of the main-sequence. To this end, we collected simultaneous X-ray and radio observations for a sample of M7-L0 dwarfs using XMM-Newton jointly with the JVLA and the ATCA. We also included data from the all-sky surveys of eROSITA on board the Russian Spektrum-Roentgen-Gamma mission (SRG) and rotation periods from TESS together with an archival compilation of X-ray and radio data for UCDs from the literature. We limit the sample to objects with rotation period <1d, focusing on the study of a transition in magnetic behavior suggested by a drastic change in the radio detection rate at vsini \approx 38 km/s. We compiled the most up-to-date radio/X-ray luminosity relation for 26 UCDs with rotation periods lower than 1d, finding that rapid rotators lie the furthest away from the G\"udel-Benz relation previously studied for earlier-type stars. Radio bursts are mainly experienced by very fast UCDs, while X-ray flares are seen along the whole range of rotation. We examined the L_{\rm x}/L_{\rm bol} vs P_{\rm rot} relation, finding no evident relation between the X-ray emission and rotation, reinforcing previous speculations on a bimodal dynamo across late-type dwarfs. One radio-detected object has a rotation period consistent with the range of auroral bursting sources; while it displays moderately circularly polarized emission. A radio flare from this object is interpreted as gyrosynchrotron emission, and it displays X-ray and optical flares. We also found a slowly rotating apparent auroral emitter, that is also one of the X-ray brightest radio-detected UCDs. We speculate that this UCD is experiencing a transition of its magnetic behavior since it produces signatures expected from higher mass M dwarfs along with emerging evidence of auroral emission., Comment: A&A submitted

The study of cometary composition is important for understanding our solar system's early evolutionary processes. Carbon dioxide (CO2) is a common hypervolatile in comets that can drive activity but is more difficult to study than other hypervolatiles due to severe telluric absorption. CO2 can only be directly observed from space-borne assets. Therefore, a proxy is needed to measure CO2 abundances in comets using ground-based observations. The flux ratio of the [O I] 5577 A line to the sum of the [O I] 6300 A and [O I] 6364 A lines (hereafter referred to as the [O I] line ratio) has, with some success, been used in the past as such a proxy. We present an [O I] line ratio analysis of comet 45P/Honda-Mrkos-Pajdu\v{s}\'akov\'a (HMP), using data obtained with the Tull Coud\'e Spectrograph on the 2.7-meter Harlan J. Smith telescope at McDonald Observatory, taken from UT February 21-23, 2017 when the comet was at heliocentric distances of 1.12-1.15 AU. HMP is a hyperactive Jupiter family comet (JFC). Icy grains driven out by CO2 sublimation have been proposed as a driver of hyperactivity, but the CO2 abundance of HMP has not been measured. From our [O I] line ratio measurements, we find a CO2/H2O ratio for HMP of 22.9 +/- 1.4%. We compare the CO2/H2O ratios to the active fractions of the nine comets (including HMP) in the literature that have data for both values. We find no correlation. These findings imply that CO2 sublimation driving out icy grains is not the only factor influencing active fractions for cometary nuclei., Comment: 17 pages, 8 figures.
