Abstract

This report investigates the lack of services provided to gifted students with attention and/or behavior problems. Issues addressed include: characterizations of gifted children and the resulting prejudice against gifted children who do not meet a certain profile; the similarities among characteristics of high ability/creative children and students identified with emotional/behavioral disorders or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder; the dissonance between the gifted individual and the attitudinal environment of the school; elements in the school environment that are possible contributors to students' behavioral and learning challenges; the underachievement of gifted students; the lack of identification of gifted students who have disabilities; the tendency of educators and others to rely on distinctions among populations of children and youth, and to ignore the similarities that may exist; and the tendency of teachers to be predisposed to view negative characteristics of children and youth as indicators of behavioral disabilities, rather than as potential signs of creativity or advanced learning ability. Important implications for understanding the rationale to include students with behavioral challenges in gifted programs are provided, as well as recommendations for inservice and preservice teacher education, and considerations regarding interventions, curriculum, and adaptations in the general school environment. 17. Previewing the Professoriate of the 21st Century: A Multi-Institutional Analysis of Faculty Supply and Demand.

Abstract

This study looked at future demand for faculty at institutions of higher education by developing a larger and more sophisticated model of faculty demand than previously used and by examining faculty separation and hiring patterns among independent colleges and universities. All members of the Higher Education Data Sharing Consortium (125 independent colleges and universities in the nation that collaborate on comparative research studies) were invited to contribute data to the study which consisted of two parts: an institutional survey of faculty separation and hiring practices and a faculty data base. Additional qualitative data from a survey of department chairs and an annual Senior Survey were obtained at Franklin and Marshall College only. The major findings indicated that the rate of faculty retirements is projected to increase significantly over the next 20 years with the largest wave of retirements projected to occur from 1999 through the first decade of the next century. In addition, the amount of faculty hiring activity will increase significantly in the years ahead, but due to other factors, the net impact on national supply may be sharply attenuated. Abstract

Recent projections of climatic change have focused a great deal of scientific and public attention on patterns of carbon (C) cycling as well as its controls, particularly the factors that determine whether an ecosystem is a net source or sink of atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2). Net ecosystem production (NEP), a central concept in C-cycling research, has been used by scientists to represent two different concepts. We propose that NEP be restricted to just one of its two original definitions-the imbalance between gross primary production (GPP) and ecosystem respiration (ER). We further propose that a new term-net ecosystem carbon balance (NECB)-be applied to the net rate of C accumulation in (or loss from [negative sign]) ecosystems. Net ecosystem carbon balance differs from NEP when C fluxes other than C fixation and respiration occur, or when inorganic C enters or leaves in dissolved form. These fluxes include the leaching loss or lateral transfer of C from the ecosystem; the emission of volatile organic C, methane, and carbon monoxide; and the release of soot and CO2 from fire. Carbon fluxes in addition to NEP are particularly important determinants of NECB over long time scales. However, even over short time scales, they are important in ecosystems such as streams, estuaries, wetlands, and cities. Recent technological advances have led to a diversity of approaches to the measurement of C fluxes at different temporal and spatial scales. These approaches frequently capture different components of NEP or NECB and can therefore be compared across scales only by carefully specifying the fluxes included in the measurements. By explicitly identifying the fluxes that comprise NECB and other components of the C cycle, such as net ecosystem exchange (NEE) and net biome production (NBP), we can provide a less ambiguous framework for understanding and communicating recent changes in the global C cycle.

Abstract

Nine ecosystem process models were used to predict CO2 and water vapor exchanges by a 150-year-old black spruce forest in central Canada during 1994–1996 to evaluate and improve the models. Three models had hourly time steps, five had daily time steps, and one had monthly time steps. Model input included site ecosystem characteristics and meteorology. Model predictions were compared to eddy covariance (EC) measurements of whole-ecosystem CO2 exchange and evapotranspiration, to chamber measurements of nighttime moss-surface CO2 release, and to ground-based estimates of annual gross primary production, net primary production, net ecosystem production (NEP), plant respiration, and decomposition. Model-model differences were apparent for all variables. Model-measurement agreement was good in some cases but poor in others. Modeled annual NEP ranged from −11 g C m−2 (weak CO2 source) to 85 g C m−2 (moderate CO2 sink). The models generally predicted greater annual CO2 sink activity than measured by EC, a discrepancy consistent with the fact that model parameterizations represented the more productive fraction of the EC tower “footprint.” At hourly to monthly timescales, predictions bracketed EC measurements so median predictions were similar to measurements, but there were quantitatively important model-measurement discrepancies found for all models at subannual timescales. For these models and input data, hourly time steps (and greater complexity) compared to daily time steps tended to improve model-measurement agreement for daily scale CO2 exchange and evapotranspiration (as judged by root-mean-squared error). Model time step and complexity played only small roles in monthly to annual predictions.

40. Examining Interventions and Adverse Events After Nonfatal Opioid Overdoses in Veterans

BACKGROUND: Veterans are twice as likely to experience a fatal opioid overdose compared with their civilian counterparts. Recognition has increased that effective opioid overdose prevention likely requires a holistic approach that addresses the biopsychosocial factors contributing to opioid-related morbidity and mortality. METHODS: This retrospective descriptive study includes veterans who were administered naloxone for treatment of opioid overdose in the emergency department at Veterans Affairs San Diego Healthcare System from July 1, 2013 through April 1, 2017. Subjects were excluded if they received palliative/hospice care or were lost to follow-up, if there was documented lack of response to naloxone administration, and if overdose occurred secondary to inpatient administration of opioids. Data were collected via chart review. RESULTS: Thirty-five patients were included in this study. At the time of nonfatal opioid overdose, 29 (82.9%) had an active opioid prescription, and the mean morphine equivalent daily dose (MEDD) was 117 mg. Thirty-three (94.3%) had comorbid psychiatric disorders and 20 (57.1%) had substance use disorders. Within 6 months following overdose, subjects received care from mental health (45.5%), addiction treatment services (50.0%), and pain management (40.0%). Documented repeat overdose occurred in 4 patients. CONCLUSIONS: This study may aid in the identification of potential areas for improvement in the prevention of opioid overdose and opioid-related mortality among veterans. Interventions designed to improve access to, engagement, and retention in effective care are pivotal for addressing the opioid epidemic as it evolves.
