Abstract

Quantum sensors based on cold atoms are being developed which produce measurements of unprecedented accuracy. Due to shifts in atomic energy levels, quantum sensors often have stringent requirements on their internal magnetic field environment. Typically, background magnetic fields are attenuated using high permeability magnetic shielding, with the cancelling of residual and introduction of quantisation fields implemented with coils inside the shield. The high permeability shield, however, distorts all magnetic fields, including those generated inside the sensor. Here, we demonstrate a solution by designing multiple coils overlaid on a 3D-printed former to generate three uniform and three constant linear gradient magnetic fields inside the capped cylindrical magnetic shield of a cold atom interferometer. The fields are characterised in-situ and match their desired forms to high accuracy. For example, the uniform transverse field, $B_x$, deviates by less than $0.2$% over more than $40$% of the length of the shield. We also map the field directly using the cold atoms and investigate the potential of the coil system to reduce bias from the quadratic Zeeman effect. This coil design technology enables targeted field compensation over large spatial volumes and has the potential to reduce systematic shifts and noise in numerous cold atom systems., Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures

Contains fulltext : 291567.pdf (Publisher’s version ) (Open Access), The aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AHR) is a sensor of low-molecular-weight molecule signals that originate from environmental exposures, the microbiome, and host metabolism. Building upon initial studies examining anthropogenic chemical exposures, the list of AHR ligands of microbial, diet, and host metabolism origin continues to grow and has provided important clues as to the function of this enigmatic receptor. The AHR has now been shown to be directly involved in numerous biochemical pathways that influence host homeostasis, chronic disease development, and responses to toxic insults. As this field of study has continued to grow, it has become apparent that the AHR is an important novel target for cancer, metabolic diseases, skin conditions, and autoimmune disease. This meeting attempted to cover the scope of basic and applied research being performed to address possible applications of our basic knowledge of this receptor on therapeutic outcomes.

Abstract

Many copy number variants (CNVs) confer risk for the same range of neurodevelopmental symptoms and psychiatric conditions including autism and schizophrenia. Yet, to date neuroimaging studies have typically been carried out one mutation at a time, showing that CNVs have large effects on brain anatomy. Here, we aimed to characterize and quantify the distinct brain morphometry effects and latent dimensions across 8 neuropsychiatric CNVs. We analyzed T1-weighted MRI data from clinically and non-clinically ascertained CNV carriers (deletion/duplication) at the 1q21.1 (n = 39/28), 16p11.2 (n = 87/78), 22q11.2 (n = 75/30), and 15q11.2 (n = 72/76) loci as well as 1296 non-carriers (controls). Case-control contrasts of all examined genomic loci demonstrated effects on brain anatomy, with deletions and duplications showing mirror effects at the global and regional levels. Although CNVs mainly showed distinct brain patterns, principal component analysis (PCA) loaded subsets of CNVs on two latent brain dimensions, which explained 32 and 29% of the variance of the 8 Cohen’s d maps. The cingulate gyrus, insula, supplementary motor cortex, and cerebellum were identified by PCA and multi-view pattern learning as top regions contributing to latent dimension shared across subsets of CNVs. The large proportion of distinct CNV effects on brain morphology may explain the small neuroimaging effect sizes reported in polygenic psychiatric conditions. Nevertheless, latent gene brain morphology dimensions will help subgroup the rapidly expanding landscape of neuropsychiatric variants and dissect the heterogeneity of idiopathic conditions.

Contains fulltext : 167711.pdf (Publisher’s version ) (Closed access) IMPORTANCE: The 16p11.2 BP4-BP5 duplication is the copy number variant most frequently associated with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), schizophrenia, and comorbidities such as decreased body mass index (BMI). OBJECTIVES: To characterize the effects of the 16p11.2 duplication on cognitive, behavioral, medical, and anthropometric traits and to understand the specificity of these effects by systematically comparing results in duplication carriers and reciprocal deletion carriers, who are also at risk for ASD. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This international cohort study of 1006 study participants compared 270 duplication carriers with their 102 intrafamilial control individuals, 390 reciprocal deletion carriers, and 244 deletion controls from European and North American cohorts. Data were collected from August 1, 2010, to May 31, 2015 and analyzed from January 1 to August 14, 2015. Linear mixed models were used to estimate the effect of the duplication and deletion on clinical traits by comparison with noncarrier relatives. MAIN OUTCOMES AND MEASURES: Findings on the Full-Scale IQ (FSIQ), Nonverbal IQ, and Verbal IQ; the presence of ASD or other DSM-IV diagnoses; BMI; head circumference; and medical data. RESULTS: Among the 1006 study participants, the duplication was associated with a mean FSIQ score that was lower by 26.3 points between proband carriers and noncarrier relatives and a lower mean FSIQ score (16.2-11.4 points) in nonproband carriers. The mean overall effect of the deletion was similar (-22.1 points; P < .001). However, broad variation in FSIQ was found, with a 19.4- and 2.0-fold increase in the proportion of FSIQ scores that were very low (100) compared with the deletion group (P < .001). Parental FSIQ predicted part of this variation (approximately 36.0% in hereditary probands). Although the frequency of ASD was similar in deletion and duplication proband carriers (16.0% and 20.0%, respectively), the FSIQ was significantly lower (by 26.3 points) in the duplication probands with ASD. There also were lower head circumference and BMI measurements among duplication carriers, which is consistent with the findings of previous studies. CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE: The mean effect of the duplication on cognition is similar to that of the reciprocal deletion, but the variance in the duplication is significantly higher, with severe and mild subgroups not observed with the deletion. These results suggest that additional genetic and familial factors contribute to this variability. Additional studies will be necessary to characterize the predictors of cognitive deficits.

Abstract

Detailed analyses of computational simulations with comparisons to experimental data were performed to identify and explain the dominant flow mechanisms responsible for film cooling performance with compound angle injection, [Phi], of 45, 60, and 90 deg. A novel vorticity and momentum based approach was implemented to document how the symmetric, counterrotating vortex structure typically found in the crossflow region in streamwise injection cases, becomes asymmetric with increasing [Phi]. This asymmetry eventually leads to a large, single vortex system at [Phi] = 90 deg and fundamentally alters the interaction of the coolant jet and hot crossflow. The vortex structure dominates the film cooling performance in compound angle injection cases by enhancing the mixing of the coolant and crossflow in the near wall region, and also by enhancing the lateral spreading of the coolant. The simulations consist of fully elliptic and fully coupled solutions for field results in the supply plenum, film hole, and crossflow regions and includes surface results for adiabatic effectiveness [Eta] and heat transfer coefficient h. Realistic geometries with length-to-diameter ratio of 4.0 and pitch-to-diameter ratio of 3.0 allowed for accurate capturing of the strong three-way coupling of flow in this multiregion flowfield. The cooling configurations implemented in this study exactly matched experimental work used for validation purposes and were represented by high-quality computational grid meshes using a multiblock, unstructured grid topology. Blowing ratios of 1.25 and 1.88, and density ratio of 1.6 were used to simulate realistic operating conditions and to match the experiments used for validation. Predicted results for [Eta] and h show good agreement with experimental data.

Abstract

BackgroundThe clinical benefit for depression of an interactive computer-assisted cognitive-behavioral program on CD-ROM, the Wellness Workshop (WW), was evaluated in a randomized controlled trial.MethodA total of 191 individuals referred by primary-care physicians were randomly assigned to a control group, where physician-directed treatment as usual (TAU) was provided, or to a treatment group, where TAU was supplemented with the WW CD-ROM, delivered by mail (WW+TAU). Data were collected at baseline, at 6 weeks' post-intervention, and at a 6-month follow-up assessment. Participants were given a strong incentive by a reimbursement of $75 for completion of each assessment. Measures included symptom ratings obtained via structured clinical diagnostic interviews, as well as a battery of self-report questionnaires on symptoms specifically targeted by the intervention.ResultsAnalysis of results demonstrated evidence for skill acquisition for improving dysfunctional thinking and reducing anxiety. Among those who met diagnostic criteria for depression, WW+TAU participants were three times more likely to remit at 6 weeks' post-test than TAU participants.ConclusionsThe evidence supports the conclusion that the WW intervention added benefit to traditional care for depression. No placebo comparison group was included and the WW+TAU participants received slightly more attention (a supportive telephone contact, ⩽5 min from a psychologist 2 weeks after receiving the program). Overall, the findings add support to the accumulating evidence for the potential clinical benefit of computer-assisted behavioral health interventions. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

36. Clinical nurse specialists' knowledge specific to Medicare structures and processes.

Abstract

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to describe clinical nurse specialists' (CNSs) knowledge of Medicare structures and processes using a multiple-choice examination. DESIGN: This descriptive study used the survey method with a convenient sample. SETTING: Potential subjects received the research study packet at the address designated by them for membership mailings sent from the National Association of Clinical Nurse Specialists (NACNS). SAMPLE: The population of interest was practicing CNSs. The accessible population was NACNS members drawn from the 2002 mailing list organized by zip code. Every third mailing label was skipped. The remaining list members (N = 950) received a study packet. There was a 14.42% response rate with 137 respondents. Eighty-two percent held a master's degree in nursing. METHODS: A 46 item multiple-choice examination was developed based upon a content map established after a review of the available Medicare-related literature and consultation with Medicare advanced practice nurse providers. Content validity was established. Survey packets with the instrument, Scantron answer key, informational letter, and demographic profile were sent to potential subjects. Returned responses were keyed for correct answers. Relationships between demographic variables, raw score, and self-reported Medicare expertise were analyzed. Qualitative data elicited on the demographic form were thematically analyzed. FINDINGS: The examination had a.67 coefficient. Correlation of examination raw score to self-reported Medicare content expertise was 0.982 (P =.000). One third of the examination questions were incorrectly answered by 30% or more of respondents. Percentage correct scores ranged from 60.9 to 95.7 (M = 62.7%; SD = 10.46). Respondents offered 40 comments. Eleven comments related to a self-recognized Medicare knowledge deficit. Four responses highlighted that graduate studies had not provided them with the knowledge necessary for understanding reimbursement issues. Ten respondents expressed an interest in locating some type of educational resource addressing the Medicare system, reimbursement processes, and opportunities. CONCLUSIONS: Findings suggest that NACNS members have Medicare program knowledge deficits. Respondents recognize their deficiencies and are interested in obtaining more information about Medicare but are uncertain as to available resources or networking opportunities that might support them in this process. Graduate nursing programs may need to evaluate the amount of information provided within curriculums specific to insurance reimbursement and Medicare structures and processes. Study limitations include the low response rate and indeterminate sample representativeness. IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE: Educators should examine CNS curriculums to ensure the adequacy of Medicare program information. Continuing education programs and conference workshops addressing Medicare information should be offered to CNSs interested in increasing their expertise or exploring provider opportunities. There may be entrepreneurial opportunities available to CNSs interested in developing an expertise in Medicare programs. ABSTRACTThe contribution of glutamyl transpeptidase (GGT) (γ-glutamyltransferase [EC 2. 3. 2. 2]) to Helicobacter pylorivirulence was investigated in piglets and mice using GGT-deficient isogenic strains. All animals became colonized. However, the bacterial load was significantly lower for mutant bacteria than for parent strains. These results suggest that GGT activity provides an advantage to H. pyloriin colonization.
