Coconut plantations throughout the Asia–Pacific region are generally characterised by the presence of low-productivity senile palms over the age of 60, which have negative impacts on farming communities, coconut processors, and the wider economy. In Fiji, despite numerous senile coconut replacement programs, 60% of coconut palms are considered senile. The purpose of this study is to provide preliminary estimates of the financial viability of a market-based approach to senile coconut palm replacement in Fiji by utilising the palms as a feedstock, for the manufacture of rotary peeled veneer, along with plantation pine and mahogany. A mathematical model capable of supporting deterministic and stochastic dynamic optimisation was developed with an objective function to maximise the gross margin of marketable veneer manufacture per hour by Gmpz procuring the optimal allocation of logs throughout the landscape. The majority of facility location and log processing scale scenarios evaluated found that utilising large volumes of senile coconut palms for the manufacture of veneer was optimal, whilst veneering mills situated near the coconut plantations in Vanua Levu were found to maximise Gmpz. Overall, the results indicate that a coconut veneer and engineered wood product (EWP) value chain could present a financially viable opportunity to support large-scale senile coconut palm replacement in Fiji.

To be commercialised, glued laminated timber must typically conform to a strict bond integrity assessment. While the associated testing protocols vary slightly from country to country, the general method consists of a series of swelling (water immersion) and shrinkage (drying) cycles. The approach is independent of the species and adhesive type. Those cycles strain the gluelines to a level depending on the species’ moisture uptake, timber dimensional movement and modulus of elasticity, as well as adhesive layer elasticity. High density and high modulus of elasticity materials frequently fail within the glueline regions rather than within the timber and therefore fail the bond integrity assessment. To better understand the mechanisms that lead to glueline failure, glulam samples were manufactured using three prominent Australian commercial timbers of various densities (Radiata pine – Pinus radiata, Southern pine – Pinus caribaea/Pinus elliottii, and Spotted gum – Corymbia citriodora) and two structural adhesive types (resorcinol formaldehyde and polyurethane). Using advanced measurement techniques (digital image correlation and strain gauges), the response of the different species and adhesive types to moisture swelling and shrinkage, as well as times at which glueline separation occurs, were captured. A relationship was observed between moisture uptake and delamination percentages with spotted gum producing significantly higher levels of delamination and significantly lower moisture uptake values, compared to both radiata pine and southern. While the polyurethane glued samples on average produced higher levels of delamination, the digital image correlation data indicates that the time at which this delamination occurs is later than the samples glued with resorcinol formaldehyde. No relationship exists between the block shear strength, wood fibre amounts, and delamination percentages.

With the ongoing emphasis on sustainable and eco-friendly construction, there is a rising demand for high-strength and high-stiffness engineered wood products. This trend presents both opportunities and challenges for the Australia's hardwood industry, particularly concerning native forest-grown spotted gum (Corymbia citriodora). Glue laminated (glulam) spotted gum beams cannot be confidently commercialised due to the difficulty for its highdensity to satisfy the bond integrity criteria (referred to as “delamination test”) for external products in accordance with the Australia and New Zealand Standard AS/NZS 1328.1 (1998). To investigate potential solutions for passing this delamination test, an accurate numerical model can be a valuable and time-efficient tool. The aim of this study is to develop and detail such a model, considering heat and mass transfer, drying stresses, plasticity and fracture propagation models, using COMSOL Multiphysics 5.5. The model was validated against a series of wetting and drying experiments on spotted gum glulam, considering both moisture content variation and crack propagation along the gluelines. Results from the validated model showed that delamination is principally due to the tensile stress applied to the gluelines. Through the comprehensive analysis of the moisture content and stress distributions during delamination test, alternative strategies for reducing delamination can be identified.

This paper presents an investigation on the influence of various factors on rolling shear (RS) properties of timber feedstock for cross laminated timber (CLT) available from Australian plantation forest resources. Comparison of RS properties between three softwood species namely southern pine, radiata pine and hoop pine are presented. Furthermore, the effect of modulus of elasticity (MOE), equilibrium moisture content (EMC), aspect ratio, knots and projection length on rolling shear behaviour were investigated. Mean RS modulus for radiata pine, southern pine and hoop pine samples were 74.7 MPa, 87.1 MPa and 99.7 MPa, whilst the RS strength of those species were 2.6 MPa, 3.1 MPa and 3.7 MPa, respectively. Radiata pine samples exhibited the lowest values for RS modulus and strength, almost 30% less than those of hoop pine samples. The study confirmed that the density and MOE had a very weak correlation with RS properties for all pine species. There was an obvious decrease in RS modulus (by 18%) when the woods’ conditioned EMC changed from 8% to 12%. A further 33% decrease was observed when the woods’ conditioned EMC increased from 12% to 16%. However, the percentage increase in RS strength was found to be 23% higher in wood with 12% conditioned EMC while compared against wood conditioned to 16% EMC. RS strength improved with increased aspect ratio; however, RS modulus remained almost unaffected. Moreover, the projection length that resulted in the load passing through the centroid of the specimen resulted in lower RS modulus values, but the presence of knots improved both RS strength and modulus for all three tested species.

Finger jointing has long been a method of extending the longitudinal span of short-length timber pieces through a tooth-like profile of a nominated length and bonded with adhesive. With the high-density hardwood resource in the sub-tropics, local industries have found it difficult to obtain adequate bond integrity for high moisture areas and outdoor applications, where a good bond is governed by the dry modulus of rupture (MOR) and the percentage of wood fibre present in the separated joint after exposure to water impregnation. This paper presents the finger joint performance in terms of MOR, stiffness (MOE), and wood fiber amount (WFA) under different variables, joint profile (10 and 20 mm long fingers) using two structurally rated adhesives (a single-component polyurethane (1C-PUR) and resorcinol formaldehyde (RF)) on spotted gum (Corymbia citriodora) and Darwin stringybark (Eucalyptus tetrodonta) jointed boards. Dry bending strength or MOR testing indicated the 20 mm joints with the PUR adhesive had the best performance across both tested species compared to the RF adhesive. The measured MOE of the joints showed the RF samples to have higher MOE (7% to 13%) than the PUR samples for both joint sizes and species. Testing of joint durability through water impregnation resulted in MOR and MOE values decreasing by up to 50% for the RF and PUR joints. Conversely, the performance of water-impregnated joints after being allowed to re-condition to a 12% equilibrium moisture content produced a regain of MOR for the PUR joints across both species of 30% to 40%. Furthermore, it was found that the WFA increased for the PUR samples between the water-impregnated samples and the re-conditioned samples.

This study aims to measure the fracture properties, including crack initiation and propagation, of Australia’s native forest grown spotted gum ([SPG], Corymbia citriodora) sawn timber and associated adhesive bonds at different moisture content levels. The collected data were used as input values to develop a numerical model to understand the delamination of SPG glulam beams when exposed to a wetting and drying process. Thus, Mode I and Mode II fracture energies for crack propagation along radial and glueline directions were experimentally investigated under various moisture content levels (8%, 12% and 16%). Single-end notched beams and compact shear specimens were used to capture the Mode I and Mode II fracture energies, respectively. For crack initiation, the tensile strength perpendicular to the grain and the shear strength (taken as the maximum stress from the Mode II fracture tests) were also measured. In total, 200 experimental tests were performed. One-way analysis of variance statistical analyses showed that the fracture energies and shear strengths were independent of the range of moisture content levels investigated. In addition, the collected data were compared with the limited published fracture properties of other hardwood species.

Compared with the same species from native forests, faster growth and earlier harvesting of plantation timber may cause reductions in heartwood extractive levels, density and decay resistance due to the immaturity of wood tissues. The aim of this study was to evaluate the decay resistance of mid-rotation plantation Gympie messmate and red mahogany heartwood in ground proximity and L-joint aboveground field tests at three sites in Queensland, Australia. After 12?13 years in both tests, the inner heartwood of each plantation species generally had more decay than the middle and outer heartwood. Middle heartwood was significantly less durable than outer heartwood for each plantation species in the ground-proximity test at the tropical South Johnstone site. Plantation Gympie messmate outer heartwood performed similarly to native-forest spotted gum, the high-durability reference species. Plantation red mahogany had more decay than Gympie messmate. Given the need for plantation timber to supplement supplies from sustainable native forest resources, substantial research is recommended to fully characterise the durability of key plantation hardwood species, including investigation of protective treatment supplementation and communication of design requirements.

The effects of adding surfactants to polyurethane and resorcinol formaldehyde adhesives were tested relative to the gluability of spotted gum timber for structural glue-laminated beams (Glulam). While previous attempts to improve the bond performance of this very difficult to glue timber have focused primarily on timber surface preparations, this study concentrated on lowering the adhesive surface tension through added surfactants to improve the adhesive-timber surface wetting. Accordingly, 44 glulam samples were manufactured using polyurethane and resorcinol formaldehyde adhesives, with eight surfactant formulations and two different pre-gluing surface machining methods, i.e., face milling and planing. Although the surfactants were successful in drastically lowering the adhesive surface tension and improving adhesive spreading, none of the surfactant formulations tested were successful in improving the glulam adhesive bond qualities. Overall, the surfactant formulations produced considerably higher delamination, lower shear strength, and lower wood fibre failure compared to the control samples; therefore, they are not a viable solution to improve the gluing of spotted gum. The resorcinol formaldehyde adhesive and face milling produced considerably better results compared to the polyurethane adhesives and conventional planing.

Rolling shear (RS) is one of the key design parameters that influence the out-of-plane bending stiffness of cross-laminated timber (CLT) panels and thus affects the design and performance of CLT floor and wall systems. Various experimental methods are currently used to determine the RS capacity of CLT panels and feedstock. Some methods have been adapted to measure RS properties of clear wood such as Iosipescu, Arcan, and single cube apparatus, but there is no specific standard test method to accurately determine the RS stiffness or strength of CLT feedstock. This article presents a comprehensive review of potential RS test methods and highlights the importance of considering RS in CLT design. Test methods were thoroughly reviewed, and critically evaluated for their relative advantages and shortcomings. It was shown that sample preparation, testing procedure, and post-processing of results can significantly affect experimental outcomes, especially the RS modulus. It is recommended that in addition to current recommendations in CEN - EN 408, Timber Structures – Structural Timber and Glued Laminated Timber – Determination of Some Physical and Mechanical Properties, further specifications should be outlined in regards to plate material and type, glue type, and, more importantly, the relative location of reference points used for deformation measurement to ensure consistent and reliable comparison of RS characteristics reported by researchers. An equation was derived, and is presented, that ensures the vertical load passes through the centroid of the inclined specimen to avoid eccentricity in the specimen and moment transfer at the base of the plates. A number of international timbers of high commercial importance are extremely difficult to glue, which is significantly hindering access to global market opportunities for engineered wood products, especially for heavily demanded structural products. Some particularly problematic timbers in Australia are the dominant commercial hardwood species, including spotted gum (Corymbia spp.) and Darwin stringybark (Eucalyptus tetrodonta). These species are renowned for their very high mechanical properties, natural durability and attractive aesthetic appeal. However, they are notoriously difficult to glue, especially for sawn laminate-based engineered wood products, such as structural glue-laminated beams. Despite considerable effort and testing of diverse internationally established best-practice approaches to improve adhesion, glue-laminated beam samples of these timbers still frequently fail to meet the requirements of the relevant standard, mainly due to excessive glue line delamination. This paper discusses the key barriers to effective adhesion of these high-density timbers and particularly emphasises the necessity of achieving greater adhesive penetration. Greater adhesive penetration is required to enhance mechanical interlocking, entanglement and molecular interactions between the adhesive and the wood to achieve stronger and more durable bonds. Potential solutions to enhance adhesive penetration, as well as to improve gluability in general, are discussed in terms of their likelihood to satisfactorily prevent delamination and the potential to be applied at an industrial scale. This new fundamental understanding will assist the development of solutions, allowing industry to commercialise newly engineered wood products made from high-density timbers.

In subtropical eastern Australia, the declining availability of traditional, large hardwood native forest logs has motivated hardwood sawmills to explore potentially utilising small logs in the manufacture of veneer-based engineered wood products (EWPs), such as laminated veneer lumber (LVL). An aspatial mathematical model that maximises net present value (NPV) over a 30-year project life has been applied to estimate the financial performance of LVL manufacture in this region. Of particular interest was how facility location affected financial performance, and whether distributed production of veneer (close to the log resource) and LVL (distant from the log resource) may be more profitable than integrated production under some circumstances. While integrated production of veneer and LVL near the resource maximised NPV, distributed production was found to be more profitable than integrated production in situations where the LVL manufacturing facility had to be located relatively far from the resource. Nevertheless, the level of value-adding and processing scale had a greater impact on financial performance than facility location. The analysis also highlighted that log procurement strategy substantially affected financial performance. Encouragingly for forest growers and wood processors, utilising large volumes of small diameter logs, was important for maximisation of NPV of larger-scale LVL facilities.

Within the scope of this work, a prototype hybrid Timber-FRP (Fibre Reinforced Polymer) Glulam (Glued Laminated Timber) beam was conceived for developing timber floor systems that have an enhanced load-bearing structural performance during and after fire. To better understand the response of this hybrid Timber-FRP Glulam at elevated temperatures, this research study describes two fabrication techniques using Carbon FRP (CFRP), aiming to increase the bending moment capacity of the hybrid Timber-FRP during and after fire. Both fabrication techniques comprise of introducing CFRP fabric or strips near the areas in tension (i.e. near the soffit). The increase in bending strength and stiffness of the beams through the inclusion of a relatively rigid CFRP element has been investigated through an experimental approach based on residual strength tests on beams under four-point bending (normal Glulam and including CFRP). Results show that beams incorporating CFRP have an increased bending moment capacity and stiffness at ambient conditions. They also exhibit a significant increase in the bending moment capacity after heating and cooling (i.e. residual conditions).

Composite sandwich panels are manufactured by gluing plywood skins to either bamboo rings to produce Bamboo Core Sandwich (BCS) panels or peeler core rings to produce Peeler Core Sandwich (PCS) panels. Both single- and double-layer panels are produced. The manufactured panels are tested under four-point bending and three-point shear tests. Results are compared to the test results of conventional Cross-laminated Timber (CLT) panels. Moreover, one single-layer PCS panel with thicker plywood skins and less peeler core rings (PCS-TH) is manufactured. No significant improvements are observed in the double-layer panels compared to the single-layer panels in bending. However, in shear, double-layer panels show more consists capacities. The results indicate that the proposed PCS panel displays better ductile performance in bending and shear compared to CLT, suggesting it could be a preferred product choice in some building applications. Reduced weight, lower material costs, ease of manufacturing and usage of sustainable/waste products, make the proposed sandwich panels a potential alternative for CLT in terms of structural performance.

Over half of the large African mahogany plantation estate in northern Australia has reached the mid-point of the target rotation length of 20 to 25 years. As such, there is increasing interest in understanding the potential volume and grade qualities recovered from these young trees using different processing methods. The objective of this study was to compare the recovery rates and product grade quality for rotary veneer using spindleless lathe technology and sawn boards using traditional sawing techniques. Net veneer recovery ranged between 42% and 55% of log volume, with most veneers being limited to D-grade. Compression, surface roughness, and grain breakout were the most prominent defects limiting veneer grade. The sawn-dried-dressed recovery was low, with less than 20% of the log volume representing a potential saleable product. The small log diameter combined with defects including wane, heart shake, pith, and knots reduced the potential recovery. A high presence of sawn board distortion was observed that negatively impacted the efficiency of sawn timber processing along with product recovery. While low, the recovery of veneers and sawn timber from young African mahogany was like other young plantation grown hardwoods.

Non-destructive evaluation methods for timber stiffness are gaining increased interest as an alternative to static testing since they can be fast, cost-effective, and transportable, as well as non-destructive. The objective of this study was to evaluate the accuracy and limitations of a newly developed smartphone application (SMART THUMPER™) for the non-destructive evaluation of timber stiffness properties. The study determined the effect of the length, density (species), and cross-section sizes of the timber samples on the stiffness results. The results were compared to beam identification by non-destructive grading (BING©), an existing commercial non-destructive testing technology for evaluating the mechanical quality of wood and other materials. It was found that the application can be used to reliably estimate the stiffness of various timber products with a resonance frequency value below 2000 Hz. Frequencies greater than 2000 Hz were found to induce errors due to the smartphone microphone, which is engineered to acquire a lower frequency range. A reliability matrix providing an indication of the accuracy of SMART THUMPER™ estimation was presented, which may also prove useful in selecting appropriate sample lengths prior to testing. The sample length or dimensions can be manipulated to lower the frequency, and hence, to improve the results.

An aspatial mathematical model has been developed to simultaneously support log processing investment decisions with respect to processing scale, facility location and log procurement when data are scarce. A key design principle was to make the model suitable for use by industry. The objective function maximises gross margins per hour of log processing time, and the model accounts for potential processing efficiencies with larger-diameter logs. To support log procurement decisions, the model estimates mill-delivered log costs at which a log procurement officer should be indifferent between purchasing alternative log types. The utility of the model is demonstrated with an application to rotary veneer processing of hardwood logs in subtropical eastern Australia. Complex interactions between processing scale, facility location and log procurement strategies were revealed by substantial differences in gross margins between modelled scenarios. Log procurement decisions were found to have the greatest potential impact on gross margins, followed by facility location and processing scale. The model highlighted that substantially higher returns can be earned from optimal log procurement strategies relative to approaches that either minimise log costs, maximise product recovery or do not differentiate between log types and simply utilise all available log volume.

Southern pine and spotted gum are two of Australia’s most important locally produced commercial timbers. However, internationally, they are amongst the most problematic species to glue cost-effectively, especially for sawn-laminate-based structural engineered wood products, such as glulam and cross-laminated timber. This study investigated the efficacy of different pre-gluing wood surface machining preparations on the tensile shear strength of lap shear samples prepared from both species. Surface machining methods tested included planing, face milling, and sanding post-planing with 40 and 80 grit sandpaper. Wood face milling is not currently used commercially in Australia and has not previously been adequately tested on Australian commercial timbers to improve wood adhesion. Planing is currently the most common method used internationally for preparing wood surfaces for gluing. For both species, face milling with fast feed speed (45 m/min), slow cutter speed (57 m/s), and sanding treatments post-planing resulted in significantly higher tensile shear strength compared to planing for lap shear samples that had been subjected to an accelerated weathering process. Performance differences in tensile shear strength between surface machining methods are likely to be related to the effects of these machining methods on surface roughness, fibrillation, and sub-surface cell damage.

Darwin stringybark (Eucalyptus tetrodonta) is one of Northern Australia’s most important commercial forest resources. The wood exhibits desirable wood properties including high strength, natural durability, and visual appeal. The production of engineered wood products (EWPs) such as glulam from this resource represents a significant commercial opportunity for the timber industry in northern Australia. However, a major challenge to overcome is the achievement of satisfactory glue bond performance. This study evaluated the effects of different surface machining preparations, adhesive types, and curing temperatures on the bonding characteristics of Darwin stringybark. The pre-gluing surface machining method significantly influenced the timber wettability, roughness, permeability and tensile shear strength of adhesive bonds. Planing resulted in the lowest wettability, roughness, and permeability, while bonded planed samples produced the poorest tensile shear strength. Alternative surface machining methods including face milling and sanding post-planing were shown to significantly improve the timber wettability, roughness, and permeability, and also to increase the tensile shear strength of bonded samples. The resorcinol formaldehyde adhesive resulted in slightly improved tensile shear strength in most cases compared to the polyurethane adhesive. There was no significant improvement in tensile shear strength with the use of elevated temperature curing.

The successful manufacturing of glulam from several important Australian commercial timbers is quite challenging due to difficulties in gluing. Improvements in adhesive bond performance of spotted gum, Darwin stringybark, and southern pine timber have been achieved using alternative pre-gluing surface machining methods, e.g., face milling and sanding-post planing, when compared to conventional planing methods. In order to improve the understanding of the effects that different surface machining methods have on adhesive bond performance, this study used micro X-ray computed tomography and microscopy to assess key adhesive bond criteria. There was a considerable loss in the amount of adhesive after the wet and dry test cycles for all species. There was also an extremely high frequency of voids in the glue lines for all species, which would negatively impact bond strength and durability. Face mill prepared timber boards resulted in thicker glue lines and greater resistance to adhesion loss, compared to boards prepared via planing. For the two hardwood species, face milling also resulted in greater adhesive penetration; however, for southern pine, there were no significant differences in adhesive penetration between the three surface machining treatments. Adhesive penetration was much deeper in southern pine compared to spotted gum and Darwin stringybark.

Wood permeability has a major effect on industrial wood processing and utilization. Wood anatomy and resin influence the permeability of wood. Understanding and manipulating these influences is important to optimize the manufacture and use of forest products. This study investigated the relationships between wood anatomical traits, radial permeability, and resin content of samples collected from 19-year-old hybrid pines (Pinus elliottii var. elliottii × Pinus caribaea var. hondurensis) from Queensland, Australia. The earlywood tracheid tangential lumen diameter and axial resin canal diameter were statistically positively correlated with radial permeability. The heartwood proportion and the frequency of axial resin canals were statistically negatively correlated with radial permeability and positively correlated with resin content. The axial resin canal diameter, sapwood proportion, latewood content, ray frequency, and earlywood tracheid lumen diameter increased from pith to bark, whereas the axial resin canal frequency decreased. Resin was found distributed throughout the wood microstructure, from pith to bark in many samples, and in both heartwood and sapwood. However, there was a much greater quantity of resin in heartwood and wood from the middle (inner radius) of the tree, with widespread occurrence of resin impregnation in the axial tracheids.

This paper experimentally evaluates the embedment strength of laminated veneer lumbers (LVL) and cross-banded laminated veneer lumbers (LVL-C) manufactured from blending spotted gum (Corymbia citriodora) or white cypress pine (Callitris glaucophylla) veneers with hoop pine (Araucaria cunninghamii) veneers. Nominal 3.0 mm thick veneers were rotary peeled from small diameter (less than 30 cm) native forest sourced spotted gum and white cypress pine logs, and plantation grown hoop pine logs. 12-ply × 1.2 m (long) × 0.9 m (wide) LVL and LVL-C panels were manufactured using ten different construction strategies by mixing (i) the number of veneers from each species, (ii) the modulus of elasticity of the veneers and (iii) the veneer orientations (cross-banding). A total of 672 embedment tests, using three different dowel diameters and four different load-to-grain orientation angles, were performed using the half-hole test method described in the ASTM D5764-97a. This paper (i) compares the proportional limit strength, 5%-offset embedment strength and maximum embedment strength across the different construction strategies adopted in the study, and (ii) discusses the results in terms of load-to-grain angle and dowel diameter. More importantly, the test results are also compared to the embedment strength prediction equations detailed in the Eurocode 5 to determine their suitability for mixed-species LVL and LVL-C products. Overall, the mixed-species LVL and LVL-C showed significantly higher 5%-offset embedment strengths than single-species commercial softwood LVL products. The effect of the cross-banded veneers on the embedment strength was not found to be significant. However, the LVL-C samples exhibited a highly ductile behaviour for all load-to-grain angles and dowel diameters when compared to the LVL samples. The demand for engineered wood products (EWPs) continues to rise internationally. However, for some important Australian commercial timbers such as plantation grown southern pine and native forest sourced spotted gum, a major impediment to achieving commercially viable EWP production is difficulties experienced in gluing – particularly for sawn laminate based EWPs such as glulam. Wettability and permeability have a major influence on wood adhesion. This study investigated the efficacy of different surface machining preparations on the wettability and permeability of southern pine and spotted gum. For both species, planing resulted in poor wettability, whereas face milling and sanding treatments post-planing improved wettability. Wettability increased in southern pine earlywood compared to latewood; and wettability decreased for both species with increased time post-surface machining. Planing resulted in the highest permeability for southern pine but the lowest permeability for spotted gum. Face milling resulted in higher permeability compared to sanding treatments.

The principal objective of this project was to deliver and validate technologies to transform low-value forest resources and sub-optimum quality logs into high-value construction and appearance products suitable for Australian and international markets. The project was designed to achieve this objective through a methodology that focused on forest resource, new technologies, market and economic aspects. Critical to the project design was direct participation and guidance by forest industry stakeholders.

Wood-based mass-panels (WBMP) are emerging as an attractive construction product for large-scale residential and commercial construction. Australia is following the lead of Europe and North America with several recent projects being completed using predominately cross-laminated timber panels (CLT). These sawn timber-based panels offer some key advantages to the construction and sawmilling industry. However, veneer-based mass-panel (VBMP) systems could offer additional benefits including the more efficient use of the available forest resources to produce WBMPs that have equivalent to superior performance to CLT. Research to confirm the expected technical viability of veneer-based systems is required. VBMPs could provide a valuable contribution, alongside CLT, to the Australian timber products market.

Drying has a major impact on the viability of sawn timber production, particularly through its influence on productivity, energy usage, and product quality. Traditionally, plantation-grown southern pine structural grade timber from Australia has been dried using high temperature (≥ 180 °C) conventional batch kilns. However, the Australian industry is showing increasing interest in continuous drying kilns because of reported cost savings and potential improvements in product quality. This study investigated the differences between continuous drying and conventional drying schedules on the radial permeability, wettability, gluability, and treatability of southern pine timber from Queensland plantations. The high temperature drying resulted in significantly lower liquid permeability compared to low temperature drying; however, there were no significant differences between drying schedules for gas permeability. For combined wood surface and core data, there were no significant differences in liquid permeability between low temperature drying and continuous drying or between continuous drying and high temperature drying schedules. For earlywood after surface machining, continuous drying resulted in the greatest wettability (based on K-values), whereas for latewood after surface machining, low temperature drying produced the greatest wettability. Earlywood had greater wettability compared to latewood. Continuous drying resulted in better gluability and treatability compared to conventional drying schedules.

Information to support efficient log procurement decisions based on log cost as well as volume and value of veneer produced from log volume is scarce. The objective of this study was to systematically investigate the effect of log dimensions and geometry (small-end diameter under bark (SEDUB), taper, sweep, and ovality) on the recovery of marketable veneer from log volume, and to produce a metric to support efficient log procurement decisions. The metric developed was the maximum that could be paid for mill-delivered logs of a specific log geometry (MDLCmax) while attaining a target gross margin. In decreasing order of impact on the net recovery of marketable veneer from log volume, the log characteristics were sweep, SEDUB, taper, and ovality. In an Australian case study, log dimensions and geometry were found to substantially affect MDLCmax. Relative to a 2.6-m cylindrical log, taper of 0.01 m/m of log length decreased MDLCmax $10/m3 and sweep of 0.01 m/m of log length decreased MDLCmax $20/m3. This metric is useful for supporting log procurement decisions of the timber industry.
