This study employed a survey in examining the important influences that shape a student's selection of a major in the College of Business (COB). In particular, it compared these influences, by major, to assess which items were most (and least) important to the students majoring in accounting, general business, finance, management, marketing, and MIS. The influences, totaling 37, included internal influences (e.g., interest in the field), external influences (e.g., projected salary), and interpersonal influences (influence of significant others). Some of the findings were consistent with those of prior studies. For example, interesting work was highly important for all business majors, and specific interpersonal influences such as parents, high school teachers, and peers were relatively unimportant. The findings presented herein suggest that the overall impact of interpersonal influence may have been underestimated in previous studies. Unlike many previous studies, this study showed that job availability and job security were more important to students than interest in the field. This study augments the extant literature in that the survey was conducted right after the 2009 recession, which allowed an analysis of student decision making during a period of high unemployment and lingering economic uncertainty. Implications and suggestions for further research are discussed.

M-commerce technologies have the potential to improve consumers' lives, spawn new businesses and make existing businesses more profitable. The flexibility and convenience of new wireless technologies make anywhere, anytime Electronic Commerce (E-Commerce) and 'always on' internet a reality. Most companies and stakeholders have not completely grasped the complexities, challenges, opportunities and ramifications of m-commerce. Issues and obstacles abound in this new frontier for business, consumers and regulators; moreover, these issues and obstacles warrant the attention of both researchers and practitioners, if m-commerce is to reach its potential. We reviewed the literature to identify major issues and obstacles in m-commerce. We present them in a framework to assist practitioners in understanding the challenges they face with m-commerce and to identify research opportunities.

McGaughey This paper explores the impact of company size on an important financial consideration affecting the decision to adopt e-business in international trade. We assert that firm size will influence the choice of payment method in global e-commerce. When a Letter of Credit (L/C) is used among global supply chain partners in the e-business setting, payment flows will move faster than the physical flow of products. This asymmetric speed is not preferable for importers, particularly small importers. In this case, the diffusion of e-business adoption will likely be upstream rather than down. We predict that the usance Letter of Credit and usance L/C payable at sight will become more popular as payment modes in global e-business, particularly for Small- to Medium-size Enterprises (SMEs). New ICC regulations for e-business, if actually implemented, will likely popularise a payment mode similar to the current usance Letter of Credit.

In most developed and developing nations seniors lag behind the general population in information technology (IT) adoption and use. This phenomenon has been labeled the “gray divide” by various authors. This study examines the use of IT by seniors in Taiwan. We conducted a survey to examine Taiwanese seniors’ computer and cell phone ownership and use as well as attitudes and behaviors that result from and influence use, to better understand the extent to which Taiwanese seniors have and will utilize IT. We found that seniors in Taiwan had generally high usage and access to computers and cell phones; however, the duration of use these two devices was relatively low. Our focus was on computers and mobile phones because they are the most commonly used personal IT appliances. These devices are the “face” of IT to users. This study also examined self-efficacy, satisfaction, and comfort with these devices, as well as positive and negative attitudes, because research has shown these to influence the use of IT. Technology, particularly information technology (IT), is changing rapidly and offers many advantages for users. IT has the potential to improve one’s quality of life, but only if used. Research has shown that, in most developed and developing nations, senior use of IT lags behind that of other segments of society. This “gray divide” is a concern for government, business, and others. Concern about senior adoption and use of IT has been the motivation for numerous studies and is the motivation for this study of Chinese seniors. This exploratory study examines urban Chinese seniors’ IT use, computers and mobile phones in particular, but also their attitudes and behaviors as they relate to the use of those devices. More specifically it examines several potential factors that motivate or hinder senior’s use of information technology, including self-efficacy, satisfaction, comfort with technology, and both positive and negative attitudes. This study provides some insight into the quantity and diversity of Chinese senior technology use in urban China. Particularly noteworthy, the study found that technology ownership was quite high, and in general the Chinese seniors studied had positive attitudes and beliefs concerning information technology. This is generally good news for the Chinese government, which must efficiently provide services for the growing population of Chinese seniors, as well as for businesses that wish to capitalize on one of the largest senior populations in the world. The emergence of e-commerce (EC)is changing business theory and practice. Educational institutions and companies are trying to educate and train students and employees in EC applications and technology. Because EC is evolving and changing so rapidly, organizations face numerous challenges, and there are opportunities in developing curricula for EC. Surprisingly, few good studies look closely into the development of curricula and teaching methods for EC processes, practices, and technologies. In this article, we discuss EC education with particular emphasis on potential opportunities and challenges faced in developing and implementing e-commerce curricula. The ideas and framework presented herein are based on relevant EC literature, the authors' own experiences, curricula from universities with EC programs,and information gathered from colleagues who teach e-commerce and related courses. We highlight possible shortcomings in EC education and training and propose a framework for improving the effectiveness of an EC education. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
