A necessary move to dismantle educational injustice for historically marginalized populations is to create equitable family--school partnerships built on trusting relationships. Inequitable practices and implicit norms and biases must be intentionally counteracted to establish trusting relationships. The meeting protocol described in this article, RAFT, was born through community-based participatory action research to instigate and provide time for structured, student-centered conversations to build relationships between families with refugee backgrounds and their children's teachers. This article describes the qualitative pilot study and the community-based iterative process for designing RAFT. All 12 families and 16 school professionals who implemented RAFT expressed satisfaction with it, and teachers without exception expressed eagerness to implement RAFT with more regularity and with more participants. Themes that emerged include: (a) the importance of focusing on the child/student and the care and commitment expressed by taking the time to focus on developing a relationship between educators and families; (b) the flexibility and freedom of RAFT not being tied to required parent-teacher conferences which have a rushed timeframe and set location; (c) the increased appreciation and knowledge of the student and each other, paving the way for further collaboration; and (d) the effectiveness of elements drawn from restorative practices. We include implications for practice and further research, including measuring RAFT's outcomes and scaling up its use to determine its effectiveness.

BACKGROUND: Entrustable Professional Activities (EPA) and competencies represent components of a competency-based education framework. EPAs are assessed based on the level of supervision (LOS) necessary to perform the activity safely and effectively. The broad competencies, broken down into narrower subcompetencies, are assessed using milestones, observable behaviors of ones abilities along a developmental spectrum. Integration of the two methods, accomplished by mapping the most relevant subcompetencies to each EPA, may provide a cross check between the two forms of assessment and uncover those subcompetencies that have the greatest influence on the EPA assessment. OBJECTIVES: We hypothesized that 1) there would be a strong correlation between EPA LOS ratings with the milestone levels for the subcompetencies mapped to the EPA; 2) some subcompetencies would be more critical in determining entrustment decisions than others, and 3) the correlation would be weaker if the analysis included only milestones reported to the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). METHODS: In fall 2014 and spring 2015, the Subspecialty Pediatrics Investigator Network asked Clinical Competency Committees to assign milestone levels to each trainee enrolled in a pediatric fellowship for all subcompetencies mapped to 6 Common Pediatric Subspecialty EPAs as well as provide a rating for each EPA based upon a 5-point LOS scale. RESULTS: One-thousand forty fellows were assessed in fall and 1048 in spring, representing about 27% of all fellows. For each EPA and in both periods, the average milestone level was highly correlated with LOS (rho range 0.59-0.74; p  0.05). CONCLUSIONS: We found a strong relationship between milestone level and EPA LOS rating but no difference if the subcompetencies were weighted, or if only milestones reported to the ACGME were used. Our results suggest that representative behaviors needed to effectively perform the EPA, such as key subcompetencies and milestones, allow for future language adaptations while still supporting the current model of assessment. In addition, these data provide additional validity evidence for using these complementary tools in building a program of assessment.

In order for initiatives targeting physical activity in the school community to be effectively implemented, they need to 'make sense' from the school's perspective. That is, teachers need to see their value and feel confident that implementation will result in change. Teachers also need to feel competent in doing what's required of them to implement an initiative as intended. This study takes a mixed methods research approach (questionnaire and focus groups) to understand motivations, perceived benefits and challenges associated with implementing the 'Active School Flag' (ASF) initiative. Active School Flag 'coordinators' from Irish primary schools completed questionnaires (n = 236) and participated in focus groups (n = 19). Data were analysed using descriptive and Thematic Analysis (TA). Findings suggest that schools are both intrinsically motivated (e.g. 'to improve the health of the children') and extrinsically motivated (by recognition and status) to implement the ASF initiative. Results also reveal a litany of perceived benefits attributed to ASF implementation (including 'less active children become more active'). Conversely, results indicate that implementation comes with challenges relating to 'time' and 'paperwork'. Findings of this study have the potential to be used as inputs to improve the ASF implementation process and inform similar future programmes.

In Ireland, physical education (PE) in the first three years of second level (12-15 years) is taught within the broader program area of Wellbeing, which necessarily influences the aims and objectives which need to be achieved. Within this context, Y-PATH PE4Me is proposed as an underpinning curriculum model to serve as an appropriate and valuable guide to aid delivery of second-level PE. Y-PATH PE4Me aims to enable every student to lead a sustained physically active life. This proposed curriculum model is facilitated by (i) utilising pedagogical strategies to foster an autonomous motivational climate, and (ii) maintaining a consistent focus on core learning outcomes, which emphasise the development of positive attitudes and motivation towards physical activity, health-related knowledge and awareness, and core movement skills. Y-PATH PE4Me offers a structured model to guide well-aligned pedagogical decisions towards the goals and philosophy of wellbeing-aligned PE.

Introduction: Recently Baggs and Chemero (2018. "Radical Embodiment in Two Directions." "Synthese," 1-16. doi:10.1007/s11229-018-02020-9) advocated for the possible 'productive synthesis' between the enactive and the ecological approaches in order to understand and to explain how an agent behaves and interacts with the environment. This paper argues that data production methods from 'enactive anthropology' and 'ecological dynamics' show complementarities and differences that can inform research and pedagogical applications. Purpose: From the analysis of two studies of pedagogical interventions, we explore the potential of intertwining enactive anthropology and ecological dynamics approaches in Physical Education. Methods: We summarise two previously published studies, which address skill learning through the intertwining of phenomenological and behavioural outcomes. The first investigates the interactions between students engaged in orienteering during PE lessons, the second focuses on learning climbing skills during an individual lesson. We utilise the data to highlight the advantages and limitations of intertwining enactive anthropology and ecological dynamics approaches. Findings: We suggest caution in using principles of both approaches together, due to key epistemological and ontological differences, which may impact data outcomes and preferred methodologies. The approaches differ in conceptualising the nature of individual-environment coupling but may be complementary in investigating the complexity of this coupling. Conclusion: We assert the scientific potential of intertwining enactive anthropology and the ecological dynamics approaches and the need to consider this productive synthesis to propose practical implications for PE teachers. The outlines of a pedagogy 3E (exploration, experiential and empathetic) from intertwining these two approaches are traced.

To address the global burden of sickle cell disease and the need for novel therapies, the American Society of Hematology partnered with the US Food and Drug Administration to engage the work of 7 panels of clinicians, investigators, and patients to develop consensus recommendations for clinical trial end points. The panels conducted their work through literature reviews, assessment of available evidence, and expert judgment focusing on end points related to patient-reported outcome, pain (non-patient-reported outcomes), the brain, end-organ considerations, biomarkers, measurement of cure, and low-resource settings. This article presents the findings and recommendations of the end-organ considerations, measurement of cure, and low-resource settings panels as well as relevant findings and recommendations from the biomarkers panel.

Employment guidance theory and praxis promote long-term career development and access to decent work and sustainable jobs, yet the focus of public employment services in recent times has been influenced by policy matters of activation, conditionality and rapid job placement. While effective for some, it has been less effective for workers exposed to negative impacts of social and economic development. COVID-19-related unemployment has highlighted the need for employment guidance mechanisms that facilitate inclusive and resilient labour forces. Drawing on previous developments in employability approaches, this paper presents a conceptual analysis of employment guidance, integrating it within a work-first to life-first employability continuum. We propose an expansion of theory-informed employment guidance in national public employment services towards work-life employability for all.

This paper examines the unbundling of research in the context of the Teachers' Research Exchange (T-REX) platform, the national flagship Internet platform in Ireland for teachers to access, use and engage in research. This paper draws on two theoretical frameworks: Laurillard's conversational framework and Salmon's five-stage model. The first highlights the experimental, exploratory and creative aspects of developing an overall framework to structure the digital learning environment for teachers-as-researchers. The second explores the future of higher education and systems like T-REX in the era of digital transformation and the emerging context of Education 4.0. The original contribution is the integration of these frameworks in the creation of an open and shared learning platform so that schools and teachers can be supported to access, collaborate in and undertake research. In particular, the paper outlines signature features of the T-REX design and the way it has emerged over the last 5 years as an innovative platform to mediate the fusion of research and teaching in education. The paper highlights key issues and challenges in unbundling the traditional university, particularly in the context of educational research, but also the imperative of doing so, in the emerging era of Education 4.0.

Business remains a popular major for international students in the United States. Little is known, however, about how these students fare in business communication (BCOM) classes. This qualitative study evaluates the challenges and needs of English as an additional language (EAL) students in BCOM courses at a private university in the United States. We surveyed and interviewed 15 BCOM instructors and 30 students previously enrolled in BCOM. Results reveal faculty are aware of some, but not all, of the linguistic, cultural, emotional, time, and accommodation challenges EAL students face. We discuss suggestions for accommodating EAL students' unique needs in BCOM courses.

To respond to the epidemic of sexual assault on college campuses, many postsecondary institutions have instituted campus climate surveys, strengthened sexual assault misconduct policies, and created sexual assault task forces to coordinate entities "within" the institutional setting. However, few colleges and universities have engaged with regional networks to exchange resources, research, and innovative practices across campuses. This exploratory study applies the theoretical framework of social exchange theory to examine the necessary infrastructure for a regional network to enhance campus policies and prevention programs related to sexual assault, and the efficacy of providing formal and informal opportunities for information sharing. Interviews were conducted with 10 staff and students from seven of the nine campuses in the network. The sample includes representatives from one large public university, two historically Black colleges, a community college, and three private universities, one of which is faith based. Results indicate that there are several benefits and a few challenges for college campuses that participate in a regional network. Primary benefits include resource and information exchange, as well as new opportunities for student leadership and collaboration across campuses. Some challenges include staff turnover and limited time to devote to the network, as well as distance between some campuses. Based on these findings, it is recommended that universities consider building informal or formal alliances with regional colleges for mutual benefit.

Sedentary past-times such as video gameplay are cited as having a negative effect on children's Fundamental Motor Skills (FMS) acquisition. Conversely, "exergames" utilise 3D sensor control systems (eg, Kinect®) to offer full body interactive user experiences in which FMS outputs are often part of the game "play" experience. This study evaluated the impact that participation in (1) commercial exergames and, (2) purpose-built exergames had on user locomotor skill outcomes (run, hop, skip, jump and slide) when both sets of games were deployed with a "principled" human-in-the-loop personalisation process. Typically developing children aged between 5 and 6 years were divided into two groups; a control group (n = 20; 45% girls) exposed to commercial exergames and, an experimental group (n = 20; 50% girls) exposed to purpose-built exergames. Gameplay was delivered daily, in the classroom, over a period of 8 weeks. The Test of Gross Motor Development-2 was utilised to assess children's locomotor skills at three time points (pre, interim and posttest). A mixed analysis of variance with repeated measures on time was conducted to evaluate results of the experimental group in comparison to the control group. A significant interaction effect was observed relating to Time × Group. Pairwise comparisons with a Bonferroni adjustment demonstrated that the experimental group made significant improvements for each locomotor skill (run, hop, skip, jump and slide) from pretest to posttest while the control group made significant improvements in only one locomotor skill (the slide) over the same timeframe. Results indicate that principled design and deployment of purpose-built exergames support high quality locomotor outputs and, improved outcomes over time.

This paper introduces the Teachers' Research Exchange (T-REX), an online community of practice that is currently being deployed on a pilot basis nationwide in Ireland as a response to the "research-practice gap". The system includes collaborative, educational, and technical components. The technical aspect is the social networking and sharing platform for educational research stakeholders of all kinds. Tools for collaboration and learning available on the platform are designed for a range of users from different professional backgrounds. Crucially, these resources are complemented by a programme of structured collaborative activities to foster a novel community of practice involving pre-service teachers, practising teachers, researchers in higher education, and other educational research stakeholders. Several examples of current use are outlined to illustrate the potential for this model to support collaboration between otherwise siloed professional groups.

Vast research and personal testimonies provide strong evidence that a highly effective teacher plays a critical role in the successes of their students, particularly those at risk of underachievement. That same evidence is now being demanded of teacher preparation programs. By comparison, military preparation programs have long been outcome-based and scrutinized for their ability to prepare military professionals for readiness in the field or their failure to do so. In this paper, authors with extensive backgrounds in teaching and/or military preparation examined their respective strategies of preparing students for professional missions. They identify and discuss six lessons shared by both teaching preparation programs and military preparation programs, which based on their experience and extensive relevant research, have contributed to the effectiveness of education and military professionals in the field. In their conclusion, the authors discuss the critical importance of developing a Battlemind, defined as an empowering mindset for promoting professional sustainability and success in achieving specific, meaningful outcomes in the field.

Antibiotic use can lead to the expansion of multi-drug-resistant pathobionts within the gut microbiome that can cause life-threatening infections. Selective alternatives to conventional antibiotics are in dire need. Here, we describe a Klebsiella PhageBank for the tailored design of bacteriophage cocktails to treat multi-drug-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae. Using a transposon library in carbapenem-resistant K. pneumoniae , we identify host factors required for phage infection in major Klebsiella phage families. Leveraging the diversity of the PhageBank, we formulate phage combinations that eliminate K. pneumoniae with minimal phage resistance. Optimized cocktails selectively suppress the burden of K. pneumoniae in the mouse gut and drive the loss of key virulence factors that act as phage receptors. Phage-mediated diversification of bacterial populations in the gut leads to co-evolution of phage variants with higher virulence and broader host range. Altogether, the Klebsiella PhageBank charts a roadmap for phage therapy against a critical multidrug-resistant human pathogen.
