- Abstract
Report presenting the findings and recommendations from a four-year research project funded by the Australian Research Council investigating how leadership is practised in the intersection of cultural and gender differences in Australian organisations known for their best practice in diversity and inclusion management and programs. The project surfaced how diversity in organisations is made visible through internal and external means. Internally, diversity is managed through formal strategies and documents, informal activities and dedicated diversity and inclusion positions. Externally, diversity is demonstrated through the display of symbolic and material engagement with diversity and inclusion (e.g., public statements on same-sex marriage, customer-based multicultural programs and community guidelines) and the attainment of awards and certifications. The project also highlighted that despite changes to the workforce composition and diversity in business being promoted, celebrated and championed, many obstacles remain to expanding the diversity of the workforce and its leadership.

- Abstract
OBJECTIVE: This study investigated whether moral injury appraisals moderated the relationships between trauma, postmigration living difficulties, resilience, and mental health outcomes in adolescent refugees. METHOD: Eighty-five adolescent refugees from a community sample completed an online survey. RESULTS: A significant interaction was found between moral injury and discrimination for externalizing and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms; adolescents whom had experienced high levels of discrimination combined with high levels of moral injury had poorer mental health. A significant interaction was found between moral injury and resilience for internalizing symptoms: high levels of resilience appeared to buffer the association between moral injury and internalizing symptoms. Contrary to predictions, stressful life experiences and postmigration living difficulties did not interact significantly with moral injury to predict mental health. CONCLUSIONS: Discrimination may contribute to perpetuating poor mental health in adolescent refugees with high levels of moral injury. Resilience may buffer some of the negative effects of moral injury.

PURPOSE As cancer surgery restarts after the first COVID-19 wave, health care providers urgently require data to determine where elective surgery is best performed. This study aimed to determine whether COVID-19–free surgical pathways were associated with lower postoperative pulmonary complication rates compared with hospitals with no defined pathway. PATIENTS AND METHODS This international, multicenter cohort study included patients who underwent elective surgery for 10 solid cancer types without preoperative suspicion of SARS-CoV-2. Participating hospitals included patients from local emergence of SARS-CoV-2 until April 19, 2020. At the time of surgery, hospitals were defined as having a COVID-19–free surgical pathway (complete segregation of the operating theater, critical care, and inpatient ward areas) or no defined pathway (incomplete or no segregation, areas shared with patients with COVID-19). The primary outcome was 30-day postoperative pulmonary complications (pneumonia, acute respiratory distress syndrome, unexpected ventilation). RESULTS Of 9,171 patients from 447 hospitals in 55 countries, 2,481 were operated on in COVID-19–free surgical pathways. Patients who underwent surgery within COVID-19–free surgical pathways were younger with fewer comorbidities than those in hospitals with no defined pathway but with similar proportions of major surgery. After adjustment, pulmonary complication rates were lower with COVID-19–free surgical pathways (2.2% v 4.9%; adjusted odds ratio [aOR], 0.62; 95% CI, 0.44 to 0.86). This was consistent in sensitivity analyses for low-risk patients (American Society of Anesthesiologists grade 1/2), propensity score–matched models, and patients with negative SARS-CoV-2 preoperative tests. The postoperative SARS-CoV-2 infection rate was also lower in COVID-19–free surgical pathways (2.1% v 3.6%; aOR, 0.53; 95% CI, 0.36 to 0.76). CONCLUSION Within available resources, dedicated COVID-19–free surgical pathways should be established to provide safe elective cancer surgery during current and before future SARS-CoV-2 outbreaks.

- Abstract
Sexual violence against women in the workplace remains rife and poorly addressed. Sexual harassment is often perpetrated by leaders, managers, or supervisors as the result of abusive power relations. Recognising and addressing the cultural tolerance for sexual violence in organizations and society is one of the steps in addressing this issue. In this paper, we argue that violence is normalised through leadership practices. We suggest that leadership against sexual harassment is essential for organizational redress.

- Abstract
© 2020, Emerald Publishing Limited. Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to explore leadership for diversity informed by intersectionality and radical politics. Surfacing the political character of intersectionality, the authors suggest that a leadership for diversity imbued with a commitment to political action is essential for the progress towards equality. Design/methodology/approach: Drawing lessons from the grassroots, political organizing of the black and Indigenous activist groups Combahee River Collective and Idle No More, the authors explore how these groups relied on feminist alliances to address social justice issues. Learning from their focus on intersectionality, the authors consider the role of politically engaged leadership in advancing diversity and equality in organizations. Findings: The paper finds that leadership for diversity can be developed by shifting towards a more radical and transversal politics that challenges social and political structures that enable intersectionality or interlocking oppressions. This challenge relies on critical alliances negotiated across multiple intellectual, social and political positions and enacted through flexible solidarity to foster a collective ethical responsibility and social change. These forms of alliance-based praxis are important for advancing leadership for diversity. Originality/value: This paper contributes to studies of leadership and critical diversity studies by articulating an alliance-based praxis for leadership underpinned by intersectionality, radical democracy and transversal politics.

- Abstract
This chapter presents an examination of how participation in applied theatre projects can engender change and continuity. Using Bourdieu’s field theory, I discuss the tensions that exist between the rhetoric of social change and outcomes for participants in applied theatre projects. In particular, I draw on findings from a longitudinal study of an exemplary Australian applied theatre project, The Longest Night. This study revealed that, though participants experienced some immediate change, the longer-term outcomes resembled permanence and gave an overwhelming sense of continuity. I argue that this is because this set of practices indirectly limits change as practitioners operate within a system that tends to contain their practice, product and impact, as well as reproduce legitimised social and cultural values and norms.

- Abstract
©2017 by Emerald Publishing Limited. In this chapter, we present the Mobile Technology Capacity Building (MTCB) Framework, designed to enhance students' appropriate use of personal mobile devices (PMDs) in workplace learning (WPL). WPL is a concept that denotes students' learning that occurs in workplaces as part of their university curriculum. The workplace provides an environment for university students where learning and working and theory and practice are entwined. As such, WPL is an in-between or hybrid space where traditional roles, identities, and cultures are fluid and in transition. In the 21st century, where PMDs are more and more intricately interwoven into everyday personal, educational, and professional practices, learning with mobile technology offers new opportunities and possibilities to enhance WPL. The MTCB Framework for WPL focuses on cultivating agency and thoughtful consideration for practice contexts. Its development is underpinned by three sets of theoretical ideas: Agentic learning, activity-centered learning design, and the entanglement of technology, learning, and work. Its design also draws on empirical data derived from surveys and interviews from 214 participants, including students, academics, and workplace educators that highlight the importance of considering workplace cultures. We conclude that the MTCB Framework addresses an urgent need for all stakeholders in WPL to build their capacity to use mobile technology effectively to contribute to enhancing WPL. Without a shared understanding of the role of mobile technology in WPL, it will remain difficult for students to make the most of the learning opportunities afforded by the use of PMDs in WPL.

- Abstract
Students’ agency is an important enabler of productive learning in complex, unpredictable workplace environments. In the study presented here, we explored how mobile technology can help students enhance their workplace learning experiences and develop their capacity to act as learners and future practitioners. We collected survey and interview data from 312 participants, which informed the development of Mobile Technology Capacity Building Framework that comprises thematic resources for students, academics and workplace educators. Its development draws on two sets of theoretical ideas: the importance of agentic learning that enables students to develop their practice capabilities; and the use of activity-centred learning design to distinguish between what can be designed ahead of time and what should be left to students’ agency. This study and Framework contribute to understanding how the productive use of technologies can foster students’ agency and development of deliberate professionals with a high sense of adaptive expertise.

- Abstract
With this chapter, we highlight contributing authors’ insights into what it means to educate the deliberate professional. We concisely discuss the authors’ common understanding that there is a need to reconcile critique (thinking), participation (doing) and moral responsibility (relating to others) in professional practice and professional education. We also review the book’s main threads: the critique of the current context within which professional education is delivered at university and professional practice is carried out in workplaces; and the alternative view of a professional practice and professional education that addresses and redresses the imbalance between technical know-how, moral stance and collective action. We conclude by considering the challenges and possibilities that lie ahead in further implementing this concept, especially at organisational and societal levels.

- Abstract
In this early part of the twenty-first century, we are witnessing dramatic changes to the university education landscape. Student cohorts are increasingly more diverse and globally mobile, the advent of technology-mediated learning and teaching is changing the way we used to teach and learn, the demands for their greater economic relevance together with stronger graduate employability are knowingly, or not, separating universities’ dual obligations of education for competent technicians and education for moral professionals. Together, these neoliberal developments threaten to erode the socially responsible pedagogical project of university education. In this chapter, the authors explore what might be required of university education to produce professionals for a society that is increasingly complex and rapidly changing. What does it take for students to engage with the complexities, ambiguities, diversity and uncertainties of emerging professional practices? Opportunities are identified that allow learners and educators to take ownership of and some sense of control over their emerging practice within uncertain and rapidly changing times. An argument is presented for a pedagogy of deliberateness: A new learning and teaching framework for university education, in general, and workplace learning, in particular. This new concept offers a framework to redress the imbalance from technical, instrumental learning towards moral, autonomous, democratic and consequential learning that produces not only competent technicians, but also educates deliberate professionals who are thoughtful, courageous and morally responsible actors who strive to improve the way things are.

- Abstract
This chapter outlines the origins of the concept of deliberate professional and frames it within a discussion of notions of ‘professional’, ‘deliberate’ and ‘practice’. We suggest reasons why the ‘deliberate professional’ offers a way of redressing the balance of possibilities away from exclusive economic values towards more encompassing socio-cultural values in the globalised context of university education. We then discuss how our concept of educating the deliberate professional can be translated within the wider context of social and professional practice theories, critical university studies and critical pedagogy, into a pedagogy of deliberateness. We conclude by drawing out connections with the other discussions included in the book.

carica papaya seed extract ,steroidogenic enzyme histochemistry - Abstract
Water extracts from pawpaw seed have been reported to reversibly decrease the testicular weight and to suppress spermatogenesis, and fertility of Wistar rats. The reversible changes become evident, 30 – 45 days after the withdrawal of the extract. The possible effect of this extract on the activities of steroidogenic enzymes of the testis has not been investigated. Water extract of papaya seeds was administered to male Sprague Dawley rats ad libitum for 84 days. Following the discontinuation of the extracts, ten rats each were sacrificed on days 0, 10, 20 and 30 after the withdrawal. Their testes were quickly dissected out and frozen. Cryostat sections, 10?m thick were cut. These sections were used for immunohistochemical stains for side chain cleavage enzyme and aromatase, and for histochemical stains for 17-? Hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase, 3-? Hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase. We conclude that the water extract of papaya seed suppresses the activities of steroidogenic enzymes in the testis of Sprague Dawley rats, and that this may contribute to reversible suppression of spermatogenesis, a property that gives a possible male contraceptive potential. Momordica charantia teratogenicity - Abstract
It has been reported that the water extract of the whole unripe fruit of Momordica charantia can significantly reduce blood glucose levels. However the safety of its use during pregnancy has not been fully investigated. The aim of this investigation is to determine the safety of this extract during pregnancy. The water extract of the unripe fruit was given to pregnant Sprague Dawley rats on days 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13 and 14 of gestation. The litter size was determined for each group and the litters were examined for gross malformations. The gross and histological examinations of various organs of the litters were also carried out. Results show that 8.65% of the litters from experimental animals were malformed as against 1.62% of control. It also showed that 31.2% of all the malformed litters had multiple congenital malformations. It also showed that the experimental rats had nine resorption sites while control had none. This demonstrates that the water extract of Momordica charantia is teratogenic in Sprague Dawley rats and should be used with caution in man.Key words: Momordica charantia teratogenicity

The article focuses on the works and life of the Russian poetess, Marina Tsvetayeva. Her books sell out in a matter of hours. She was born in Moscow in 1892. Her father was Russian, a museum director and professor of fine arts, her mother, German and Polish, was a talented musician. Her first book "Evening Album" was published when she was only 18. She continue to write the books even the hardships she faced. Tsvetayeva was a fearless innovator, and her poems are dense with experiment. She invented new words and new meters. The important books which shed light on the works and life of the Tsvetayeva are: "A Captive Lion: The Life of Marina Tsvetayeva," by Elaine Feinstein; "Selected Poems of Marina Tsvetayeva," by Elaine Fernstein; "Marina Tsvetaeva: The Woman, Her World, and Her Poetry," by Simon Karlirisky; "Marina Tsvetaeva: A Captive Spirit," edited by J. - Abstract
PURPOSE: To investigate the role of emotion regulation in the relation between fathers' parenting (specifically warmth, behavioral control and psychological control) and adolescents' emotional and eating disorder symptoms, after adjustment for controls. METHODS: A total of 203 11-18 year-old students from a school in a socio-economically disadvantaged area in North-East London completed questionnaires assessing emotional symptoms (measured with the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire's (SDQ) Emotional Symptoms Scale), eating disorder symptoms (measured with the Eating Attitudes Test (EAT-26)), difficulties in emotion regulation (measured with the Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale (DERS)), and fathers' overprotection and warmth, measured with the Parental Bonding Instrument (PBI), as well as behavioral and psychological control. The confounding variables considered were number of proximal (i.e., during the last year) adverse life events experienced, gender, age, and socio-economic status (eligibility for free school meals). RESULTS: Adolescents' difficulties in emotion regulation mediated the link between fathers' psychological control and adolescents' emotional symptoms, but not the link between fathers' parenting and adolescents' eating disorder symptoms, which appeared to be more directly linked to fathers' psychological control and number of proximal adverse life events experienced. Proximal adverse life events experienced were also strongly associated with difficulties in emotion regulation. CONCLUSIONS: The study findings have implications for intervention programs which may prove more fruitful in addressing adolescent emotional problems by targeting underlying emotion regulation abilities, and in addressing adolescent eating disorder symptoms by protecting adolescents with a recent experience of multiple adverse life events. Parenting programs also stand to benefit from the evidence presented in this study that paternal psychological control may have uniquely harmful consequences for adolescent development through the hampering or atrophying of emotion regulation abilities and the encouragement of eating disorders. CI mass spectra of the five isomeric vicinal d
2 -decanes have been recorded using methane and d4 -methane as reagent gases. In contrast to earlier suggestions, we find that a large fraction of the alkyl fragment ions from n-decane are formed by elimination of olefins from the abundant [M - 1] ion. Only the C9 and C8 fragment ions are produced completely by a one-step reaction between the decanes and the methane reagent ions. Isotope exchange does not occur between the hydrocarbon and the reagent ions derived from d4 -methane but extensive scrambling of the deuterium label in the d2 -decanes does take place in the [M - 1] ion. - Abstract
Size exclusion chromatography (SEC) isolation of affinity-selected ligands combined with reverse phase liquid chromatography−mass spectrometry (LC-MS) is an effective means for identifying members of mixtures which form tightly bound noncovalent complexes with target proteins. A potential liability of the approach is that the SEC isolation is carried out under nonequilibrium conditions favoring protein/ligand complex dissociation. At long SEC isolation times and/or for complexes with fast off-rates the extent of dissociation can jeopardize the ability to detect the affinity-selected components. Additionally, equilibrium binding affinities cannot be exactly determined from the measured distribution of isolated ligands. We present here an online SEC/LC-MS system for determining affinity-selected members of active mixtures which reduces this liability. A kinetic model of the SEC isolation process is developed to determine the practical limits for the application of the method and to extrapolate equilibrium binding affinities from the nonequilibrium data. The utility of online SEC/LC-MS for identifying affinity-selected ligands and for estimating binding affinities is demonstrated for a small molecule mixture of compounds with known binding affinities and for a simple combinatorial mixture.

- Abstract
A group of racemic alkyl and 2-phenethyl 1,4-dihydro-2,6-dimethyl-3-nitro-4-(3- or 6-substituted-2-pyridyl)-5-pyridinecarboxylates (
13a − q ) was prepared using a modified Hantzsch reaction that involved the condensation of a 3- or 6-substituted-2-pyridinecarboxaldehyde (7a − j ) with an alkyl or 2-phenethyl 3-aminocrotonate (11a − d ) and nitroacetone (12 ). Nuclear Overhauser (NOE) studies indicated there is a significant rotamer fraction in solution where the pyridyl nitrogen is oriented above the 1,4-dihydropyridine ring, irrespective of whether a substituent is located at the 3- or 6-position. A potential H-bonding interaction between the pyridyl nitrogen free electron pair and the suitably positioned 1,4-dihydropyridine NH moiety may stablize this rotamer orientation. In vitro calcium channel antagonist and agonist activities were determined using guinea pig ileum longitudinal smooth muscle (GPILSM) and guinea pig left atrium (GPLA) assays, respectively. Compounds having an i-Pr ester substituent acted as dual cardioselective calcium channel agonists (GPLA)/smooth muscle-selective calcium channel antagonists (GPILSM), except for the C-4 3-nitro-2-pyridyl compound which exhibited an antagonist effect on both GPLA and GPILSM. In contrast, the compounds with a phenethyl ester group, which exhibited antagonist activity (IC50 = 10-5−10-7 M range) on GPILSM, were devoid of cardiac agonist activity on GPLA. Structure−activity relationships showing the effect of a substituent (Me, CF3 , Cl, NO2 , Ph) at the 3- or 6-position of a C-4 2-pyridyl moiety and a variety of ester substituents (Me, Et, i-Pr, PhCH2 CH2 -) upon calcium channel modulation are described. Compounds possessing a 3- or 6-substituted-2-pyridyl moiety, in conjuction with an i-Pr ester substituent, are novel 1,4-dihydropyridine calcium channel modulators that offer a new drug design approach directed to the treatment of congestive heart failure and may also be useful as probes to study the structure−function relationships of calcium channels.- Published
