Abstract

Dramatic ozone losses occur during the Arctic polar springtime, both in the stratosphere and in the troposphere. Tropospheric ozone loss events in the planetary boundary layer (PBL) have been associated with enhanced halogen species concentrations, involving bromine monoxide (BrO) and possibly chlorine monoxide (C1O). BrO observations have been obtained indicating the presence of significant amounts of BrO in the PBL and the troposphere, transported via convection over large Arctic ice leads.

Abstract

The authors have used CPFM (composition and photodissociative flux measurement) polarized limb radiance measurements combined with a vector radiative transfer model to estimate stratospheric aerosol number density, extinction coefficient profiles, and size distribution. The CPFM spectroradiometer is flown on board the NASA ER-2 high-altitude research aircraft. The vertical and horizontal polarization components of limb radiance, nadir radiance, and horizontal flux are measured in the wavelength range 300-770 nm from approximately 5 [degrees] -10 [degrees] above to 5 [degrees] -10 [degrees] below the local horizon. Results from two flights during April and May 1997 as part of the Photochemistry of Ozone Loss in the Arctic Region in Summer campaign are presented. Aerosol characteristics are determined by forcing the model radiances and polarization to match the measurements. Results indicate number densities at 20 km are roughly 5-6 [cm.sup.-3] with an effective radius of 0.17-0.20 [[micro]meter]. Number, surface area, and volume densities compare favorably with two in situ particle counters also flown on the ER-2.

Spectral measurements of ultraviolet-B radiation made at Toronto since 1989 indicate that the intensity of light at wavelengths near 300 nanometers has increased by 35 percent per year in winter and 7 percent per year in summer. The wavelength dependence of these trends indicates that the increase is caused by the downward trend in total ozone that was measured at Toronto during the same period. Abstract

Peak stratospheric chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) and other ozone depleting substance (ODS) concentrations were reached in the mid- to late 1990s. Detection and attribution of the expected recovery of the stratospheric ozone layer in an atmosphere with reduced ODSs as well as efforts to understand the evolution of stratospheric ozone in the presence of increasing greenhouse gases are key current research topics. These require a critical examination of the ozone changes with an accurate knowledge of the spatial (geographical and vertical) and temporal ozone response. For such an examination, it is vital that the quality of the measurements used be as high as possible and measurement uncertainties well quantified. In preparation for the 2014 United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP)/World Meteorological Organization (WMO) Scientific Assessment of Ozone Depletion, the SPARC/IO3C/IGACO-O3/NDACC (SI2N) Initiative was designed to study and document changes in the global ozone profile distribution. This requires assessing long-term ozone profile data sets in regards to measurement stability and uncertainty characteristics. The ultimate goal is to establish suitability for estimating long-term ozone trends to contribute to ozone recovery studies. Some of the data sets have been improved as part of this initiative with updated versions now available. This summary presents an overview of stratospheric ozone profile measurement data sets (ground and satellite based) available for ozone recovery studies. Here we document measurement techniques, spatial and temporal coverage, vertical resolution, native units and measurement uncertainties. In addition, the latest data versions are briefly described (including data version updates as well as detailing multiple retrievals when available for a given satellite instrument). Abstract

International audience; The first three Canadian Arctic ACE validation campaigns were held during polar sunrise at Eureka, Nunavut, Canada (80° N, 86° W) from 2004 to 2006 in support of validation of the ACE (Atmospheric Chemistry Experiment) satellite mission. Three or four zenith-sky viewing UV-visible spectrometers have taken part in each of the three campaigns. The differential slant column densities and vertical column densities of ozone and NO2 from these instruments have been compared following the methods of the UV-visible Working Group of the NDACC (Network for Detection of Atmospheric Composition Change). The instruments are found to partially agree within the required accuracies for both species, although both the vertical and slant column densities are more scattered than required. This might be expected given the spatial and temporal variability of the Arctic stratosphere in spring. The vertical column densities are also compared to integrated total columns from ozonesondes and integrated partial columns from the ACE-FTS (ACE-Fourier Transform Spectrometer) and ACE-MAESTRO (ACE-Measurements of Aerosol Extinction in the Stratosphere and Troposphere Retrieved by Occultation) instruments on board ACE. For both species, the columns from the ground-based instruments and the ozonesondes are found to generally agree within their combined error bars. The ACE-FTS ozone partial columns and the ground-based total columns agree within 4.5%, averaged over the three campaigns. The ACE-MAESTRO ozone partial columns are generally smaller than those of the ground-based instruments, by an average of 9.9%, and are smaller than the ACE-FTS columns by an average of 14.4%. The ACE-FTS NO2 partial columns are an average of 13.4% smaller than the total columns from the ground-based instruments, as expected. The ACE-MAESTRO NO2 partial columns are larger than the total columns of the ground-based instruments by an average of 2.5% and are larger than the partial columns of the ACE-FTS by an average of 15.5%.

Abstract

A vector radiative-transfer code has been developed that is able to accurately and efficiently calculate radiance and polarization scattered from Earth's limb. A primary application of this code will be towards generating weighting functions, based on calculated limb radiances, for the retrieval of trace gases (O[SUB3], NO[SUB2], BrO, OClO, and O[SUB4]) from the optical spectrograph and infrared imaging system (OSIRIS). OSIRIS is a UV-visible instrument on board the Odin satellite that measures limb-scattered light. This model solves the vector radiative-transfer equation using an iterative technique simultaneously in both plane-parallel and spherical-shell atmospheres. OSIRIS simulated limb radiance and polarization and OSIRIS weighting functions are presented along with a discussion of the numerical solution parameters, model intercomparisons and timings, and necessary model improvements. Overall agreement with other models was found to be very good and model speed is comparable to a fast finite-difference code. A set of OSIRIS reference atmospheres have been compiled for use with radiative-transfer models. Each of the 216 atmospheres (18 latitudes × 12 months) include profiles of air, pressure, temperature, ozone, NO[SUB2], BrO, and stratospheric aerosols. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

This paper presents extensive {bias determination} analyses of ozone observations from the Atmospheric Chemistry Experiment (ACE) satellite instruments: the ACE Fourier Transform Spectrometer (ACE-FTS) and the Measurement of Aerosol Extinction in the Stratosphere and Troposphere Retrieved by Occultation (ACE-MAESTRO) instrument. Here we compare the latest ozone data products from ACE-FTS and ACE-MAESTRO with coincident observations from nearly 20 satellite-borne, airborne, balloon-borne and ground-based instruments, by analysing volume mixing ratio profiles and partial column densities. The ACE-FTS version 2.2 Ozone Update product reports more ozone than most correlative measurements from the upper troposphere to the lower mesosphere. At altitude levels from 16 to 44 km, the average values of the mean relative differences are nearly all within +1 to +8%. At higher altitudes (45–60 km), the ACE-FTS ozone amounts are significantly larger than those of the comparison instruments, with mean relative differences of up to +40% (about +20% on average). For the ACE-MAESTRO version 1.2 ozone data product, mean relative differences are within ±10% (average values within ±6%) between 18 and 40 km for both the sunrise and sunset measurements. At higher altitudes (~35–55 km), systematic biases of opposite sign are found between the ACE-MAESTRO sunrise and sunset observations. While ozone amounts derived from the ACE-MAESTRO sunrise occultation data are often smaller than the coincident observations (with mean relative differences down to −10%), the sunset occultation profiles for ACE-MAESTRO show results that are qualitatively similar to ACE-FTS, indicating a large positive bias (mean relative differences within +10 to +30%) in the 45–55 km altitude range. In contrast, there is no significant systematic difference in bias found for the ACE-FTS sunrise and sunset measurements.
