Abstract

Bloch oscillations were predicted and observed long ago in Josephson junctions, which are thin insulating or conducting layers bridging two superconductors. Here we forward a scheme for utilizing these oscillations to amplify nano-metric mechanical vibrations. Highly coherent non-classical mechanical states can be produced and controlled by simply applying a DC bias current and an in-plane magnetic field. The vibrations induce peaks in the I-V characteristic of the junction and can be detected by simple DC voltage measurements., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

Superconductivity is a result of quantum coherence at macroscopic scales. Two superconductors separated by a metallic or insulating weak link exhibit the AC Josephson effect: the conversion of a DC voltage bias into an AC supercurrent. This current may be used to activate mechanical oscillations in a suspended weak link, acting as an electromechanical resonator. As the DC voltage bias condition is remarkably difficult to achieve in experiments, here the experimentally relevant purely DC current bias case is analyzed thoroughly. It shall be demonstrated that the Josephson effect can be exploited to activate and detect mechanical oscillations, eliminating the need for AC bias conditions that are generally required for nanoelectromechanical systems (NEMS). The coupling between the electronic and mechanical degrees of freedom may be tuned by an external magnetic field, allowing the exploration of the Josephson effect in two distinct coupling regimes. In the weak coupling regime, Shapiro-like plateaus and mechanically induced hysteresis loops develop in the junction's current-voltage (I-V) characteristic which allow for precision measurements of the resonator's resonance frequency by simple DC voltage measurements. In contrast, in the strong coupling regime there are sudden mechanically induced transitions to a zero voltage state which will be explained by energy sharing between the electronic and mechanical degrees of freedom. These transitions are intimately linked to the mechanical damping of the resonator, and may be used to determine the junction's quality factor, again with only DC voltage measurements. It is further revealed that these sudden transitions may be eliminated by using a setup consisting of two suspended weak links connected in parallel forming a superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID), and tuning the external magnetic flux appropriately. Finally, the quantum nature of Josephson junctions is explored more thoroughly by considering Bloch-like oscillations that develop in the junction. These oscillations, when coupled to mechanical vibrations, generate non-classical mechanical states that are intimately linked to the quantum dynamics of the junction.

Abstract

Quantum simulations are becoming an essential tool for studying complex phenomena, e.g. quantum topology, quantum information transfer, and relativistic wave equations, beyond the limitations of analytical computations and experimental observations. To date, the primary resources used in proof-of-principle experiments are collections of qubits, coherent states or multiple single-particle Fock states. Here we show the first quantum simulation performed using genuine higher-order Fock states, with two or more indistinguishable particles occupying the same bosonic mode. This was implemented by interfering pairs of Fock states with up to five photons on an interferometer, and measuring the output states with photon-number-resolving detectors. Already this resource-efficient demonstration reveals new topological matter, simulates non-linear systems and elucidates a perfect quantum transfer mechanism which can be used to transport Majorana fermions., Comment: New text and results. 19 pages, 13 figures, supplementary material

5. The Development of a Tool for Investigating the Barriers and Supports to Participation in School Life and Feelings of Belonging: Part 1

Abstract

Students' experience of learning, relating and belonging are crucial to their participation in school. With ever growing concern about young people's mental health and levels of informal and formal exclusion it is timely to investigate how schools can be supported in meeting the social and psychological needs of learners. The focus of this paper is the development of a questionnaire to investigate the relationship between pupils' experience of belonging and the barriers they encounter in the school setting. Our aim was to test out the tool prior to full standardisation. Data was collected from 722 students across four secondary schools. Four factors were identified within the scale with one factor, that which measured emotional security and comfort, demonstrating moderate correlations to all other scales indicating that it had an underlying relationships to different aspects of the school environment. Students who disclosed SEND had a greater likelihood of demonstrating low connectedness than would be expected by chance alone, with some differences in the degree to which particular items were predictive of overall levels of connectedness.

This paper examines qualitative data from a mixed methods questionnaire designed to inform schools on the barriers and supports to participation in school life and the relationship with students’ feelings of belonging. It contributes to the limited existing qualitative data and can be set alongside students’ quantitative measures to provide new insights. We explore responses from 595 students, to the open questions of a survey. Students frequently mentioned relationships with teachers and peers, often in the context of feeling safe to be themselves, suggesting that feeling part of the school and feeling safe are intertwined. The comments reveal the importance of being recognised and accepted and not having their identity purely defined in relation to attainment on a narrowly defined curriculum.

10. The early impacts of primary HPV cervical screening implementation in Australia on the pathology sector: a qualitative study

Abstract

BACKGROUND: The transition of Australia's National Cervical Screening Program from cytology to a molecular test for human papillomavirus (HPV) (locally referred to as the 'Renewal'), including a longer five-year interval and older age at commencement, significantly impacted all sectors of program delivery. The Renewal had major implications for the roles and requirements of pathology laboratories providing services for the Program. This study aimed to understand the early impacts of the Renewal and its implementation on the pathology sector. METHODS: Semi-structured qualitative interviews were conducted with key stakeholders (N = 49) involved in the STakeholder Opinions of Renewal Implementation and Experiences Study (STORIES), 11-20 months after the program transition. A subset of interviews (N = 24) that discussed the pathology sector were analysed using inductive thematic analysis. RESULTS: Four overarching themes were identified: implementation enablers, challenges, missed opportunities, and possible improvements. Participants believed that the decision to transition to primary HPV screening was highly acceptable and evidence-based, but faced challenges due to impacts on laboratory infrastructure, resources, staffing, and finances. These challenges were compounded by unfamiliarity with new information technology (IT) systems and the new National Cancer Screening Register ('Register') not being fully functional by the date of the program transition. The limited availability of self-collection and lack of standardised fields in pathology forms were identified as missed opportunities to improve equity in the Program. To improve implementation processes, participants suggested increased pathology sector involvement in planning was needed, along with more timely and transparent communication from the Government, and clearer clinical management guidelines. Abstract

BACKGROUND: Australia has had significant successes in the prevention of cervical cancer. However, there is considerable scope for improving screening participation. In December 2017, Australia shifted from cytology to a human papillomavirus-based screening program as part of the renewed National Cervical Screening Program. This provided the opportunity to introduce a clinician-supported self-collection cervical screening pathway, which allows screening participants aged 30 years or more and who are under-screened or never-screened to screen via a self-collected human papillomavirus test. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to explore screening participant experiences of a clinician-supported self-collection cervical screening pathway. METHODS: Interviews (n = 45) were conducted with participants who had used the clinician-supported self-collection cervical screening pathway in the Australian National Cervical Screening Program between December 2017 and April 2019. Interviews were analyzed using template analysis. RESULTS: Under-screened and never-screened participants reported a variety of interrelated barriers to cervical screening due to the nature of the test. For these participants, self-collection was a preferable way to perform screening as it overcame various barriers, was easy to use and promoted a sense of empowerment. Participants reported that the role of their practitioner was influential in their decision to undertake cervical screening, and that the support and information provided was a key factor in their experiences of the self-collection pathway. CONCLUSION: Findings support the use of a clinician-supported model of care, as an alternative screening modality in Australia's National Cervical Screening Program. As more countries consider the move from a cytology to human papillomavirus-based cervical screening program, this model may assist in greater engagement of under-screened participants.

Abstract

BACKGROUND: In December 2017, the Australian National Cervical Screening Program transitioned from 2-yearly cytology-based to 5-yearly human papillomavirus (HPV)-based cervical screening, including a vaginal self-collection option. Until July 2022, this option was restricted to under- or never-screened people aged 30 years and older who refused a speculum exam. We investigated the perspectives and experiences of stakeholders involved in, or affected by, the initial implementation of the restricted self-collection pathway. METHODS: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 49 stakeholders as part of the STakeholder Opinions of Renewal Implementation and Experiences Study. All interviews were audio recorded and transcribed. Data were thematically analysed and coded to the Conceptual Framework for Implementation Outcomes. RESULTS: Stakeholders viewed the introduction of self-collection as an exciting opportunity to provide under-screened people with an alternative to a speculum examination. Adoption in clinical practice, however, was impacted by a lack of clear communication and promotion to providers, and the limited number of laboratories accredited to process self-collected samples. Primary care providers tasked with communicating and offering self-collection described confusion about the availability, participant eligibility, pathology processes, and clinical management processes for self-collection. Regulatory delay in developing an agreed protocol to approve laboratory processing of self-collected swabs, and consequently initially having one laboratory nationally accredited to process samples, led to missed opportunities and misinformation regarding the pathway's availability. CONCLUSIONS: Whilst the introduction of self-collection was welcomed, clear communication from Government regarding setbacks in implementation and how to overcome these in practice were needed. 26. Self-collection cervical screening in the renewed National Cervical Screening Program: a qualitative study

Abstract

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the implementation and acceptability of the self-collection cervical screening pathway since commencement of the renewed National Cervical Screening Program (rNCSP), from the perspectives of screening participants and primary care practitioners. DESIGN, SETTING, PARTICIPANTS: Qualitative study; individual semi-structured interviews with 45 screening participants and 18 primary care practitioners in Victoria who had engaged with the self-collection pathway during the first 17 months of the rNCSP (1 December 2017 - 30 April 2019). RESULTS: The self-collection pathway was highly acceptable as an alternative cervical screening pathway for most participating screening participants and practitioners. Some screening participants indicated that they would not have been screened had the pathway not been available. Acceptability was lower among those who had tested positive for HPV types not 16/18, a result that requires additional testing of a clinician-collected cervical sample. Use of the self-collection pathway is driven more by practitioners than their patients. Interpretations of the self-collection guidelines varied between practices. Barriers to expanding promotion of the pathway by practitioners included difficulties with identifying eligible participants. CONCLUSIONS: Increasing the accessibility of the self-collection pathway to under- and never screened women could reduce inequities in cervical cancer outcomes for those not participating in the main screening pathway. Practitioners should be provided resources to integrate self-collection into routine practice and to efficiently implement the entire self-collection pathway, in order to maximise its use and to optimise the experience for screening participants.

27. Learning Design for Sustainable Development

Abstract

Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to theorise an approach to learning design for formal education and training contexts, which can empower the student-led acquisition of competences for sustainable development with particular reference to engineering education. Design: the paper presents a conceptual framework which synthesises two extant bodies of empirical research (i) into the development of systems engineering proficiencies and (ii) the development of learning power and authentic enquiry. Findings: Bringing these two research-based bodies of knowledge together enables the conceptualisation of a practical learning design which integrates the development of self-leadership, learning relationships and complex problem solving for sustainable futures. These two approaches, and their synthesis, have been implemented in practice but not reported on or theorised before. Originality: This transdisciplinary theoretical study was undertaken by the original researchers to integrate and transcend the limitations of disciplinary and siloed approaches to learning design for 21C meta-competencies and to explore a common architecture capable of deployment over time and adaptable to different contexts. Research limitations/implications: Whilst the two strands of research underpinning this synthesis are well researched, the integrated model has yet to be empirically verified through appropriate scientific methodologies. Practical implications: this study provides a foundation for the development of a core curricular spine to be developed as an accreditation framework in formal education and work-based settings. The development of a rigorous measurement model has significant implications for policy and practice.

Abstract

Farmed stocks of Atlantic salmon in Ireland are inspected on 14 occasions throughout the year to monitor sea lice levels as part of a national programme. Sea lice are a naturally occurring parasite found on marine fish, including salmonids. They are small ecto-parasitic copepod crustaceans and there are approximately 559 species. The objectives of the National Sea Lice Monitoring Programme are:  To provide an objective measurement of infestation levels on farms.  To investigate the nature of infestations.  To provide management information to drive the implementation of control and management strategies.  To facilitate further development and refinement of this strategy. The sea lice control and management strategy has five principal components:  Separation of generations.  Annual fallowing of sites.  Early harvest of two-sea-winter fish.  Targeted treatment regimes, including synchronous treatments.  Agreed husbandry practices.
