Funneling acoustic waves through largely mismatched channels is of fundamental importance to tailor and transmit sound for a variety of applications. In electromagnetics, zero-permittivity metamaterials have been used to enhance the coupling of energy in and out of ultranarrow channels, based on a phenomenon known as supercoupling. These metamaterial channels can support total transmission and complete phase uniformity, independent of the channel length, despite being geometrically mismatched to their input and output ports. In the field of acoustics, this phenomenon is challenging to achieve, since it requires zero-density metamaterials, typically realized with waveguides periodically loaded with membranes or resonators. Compared to electromagnetics, the additional challenge is due to the fact that conventional acoustic waveguides do not support a cut-off for the dominant mode of propagation, and therefore zero-index can be achieved only based on a collective resonance of the loading elements. Here we propose and experimentally realize acoustic supercoupling in a dual regime, using a compressibility-near-zero acoustic channel. Rather than engineering the channel with subwavelength inclusions, we operate at the cut-off of a higher-order acoustic mode, demonstrating the realization and efficient excitation of a zero-compressibility waveguide with effective soft boundaries. We experimentally verify strong transmission through a largely mismatched channel and uniform phase distribution, independent of the channel length. Our results open interesting pathways towards the realization of extreme acoustic parameters, and their implementation in relevant applications, such as ultrasound imaging, sonar technology, and sound transmission.

This manuscript is the outcome of the subgroup ``PDFs, shadowing and $pA$ collisions'' from the CERN workshop ``Hard Probes in Heavy Ion Collisions at the LHC''. In addition to the experimental parameters for $pA$ collisions at the LHC, the issues discussed are factorization in nuclear collisions, nuclear parton distributions (nPDFs), hard probes as the benchmark tests of factorization in $pA$ collisions at the LHC, and semi-hard probes as observables with potentially large nuclear effects. Also, novel QCD phenomena in $pA$ collisions at the LHC are considered. We present a new model for generalized parton distributions (GPDs), based on the aligned jet model, which successfully describes the deeply virtual Compton scattering (DVCS) data from H1, ZEUS, HERMES and CLAS. We also present an easily implementable and flexible algorithm for their construction. This new model is necessary since the most widely used models for GPDs, which are based on factorized double distributions, cannot, in their current form, describe the DVCS data when employed in a full QCD analysis. We demonstrate explicitly the reason for the shortcoming in the data description. We use several diverse parameterizations of diffractive parton distributions, extracted in leading twist QCD analyses of the HERA diffractive deep inelastic scattering (DIS) data, to make predictions for leading twist nuclear shadowing of nuclear quark and gluon distributions in DIS on nuclei. We find that the HERA diffractive data are sufficiently precise to allow us to predict large nuclear shadowing for gluons and quarks, unambiguously. We performed detailed studies of nuclear shadowing for up and charm sea quarks and gluons within several scenarios of shadowing and diffractive slopes, as well as at central impact parameters. We compare these leading twist results with those obtained from the eikonal approach to nuclear shadowing (which is based on a very different space-time picture) and observe sharply contrasting predictions for the size and Q^2-dependence of nuclear shadowing. An analysis of Deeply Virtual Compton Scattering (DVCS) is made within the colour dipole model. We compare and contrast two models for the dipole cross-section which have been successful in describing structure function data. Both models agree with the available cross section data on DVCS from HERA. We give predictions for various azimuthal angle asymmetries in HERA kinematics and for the DVCS cross section in the THERA region., Comment: Published version, 27 pages, 17 figures. We present a next-to-leading order (NLO) QCD analysis of unpolarized and polarized deeply virtual Compton scattering (DVCS) amplitudes, for two different input scenarios, in the $\bar{MS}$ scheme. We illustrate and discuss the size of the NLO effects and the behavior of the amplitudes in skewedness, $\zeta$, and photon virtuality, $Q^2$. In the unpolarized case, at fixed $Q^2$, we find a remarkable effective power-law behaviour in $\zeta$, akin to Regge factorization, over several orders of magnitude in $\zeta$. We also quantify the ratio of real to imaginary parts of the DVCS amplitudes and their sensitivity to changes of the factorization scale., Comment: 12 pages, 12 figures, revtex, final version to be published in Phys. We present a complete, next-to-leading-order (NLO), leading-twist QCD analysis of deeply virtual Compton scattering (DVCS) observables, in the ${\bar {MS}}$ scheme, and in the kinematic ranges of the H1, ZEUS and HERMES experiments. We use a modified form of Radyushkin's ansatz for the input model for the generalized parton distributions. We present results for leading order (LO) and NLO for representative observables and find that they compare favourably to the available data., Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures, revtex, published version, we modify Radyushkin's ansatz for the GPDs to correct for finite hadronic mass effects, and, using the latest MRST PDFs, now agree with the H1 data (modified figs). The QCD evolution of both unpolarized and polarized generalized parton distributions (GPDs) to next-to-leading order (NLO) accuracy is presented, in both the DGLAP and ERBL regions, for two appropriately symmetrized input distributions based on conventional parton density functions. To illustrate the relative size of the NLO corrections a comparison is made with leading order evolution of the same distributions. The nuclear option at THERA provides an ideal and unique opportunity to investigate the black body limit (BBL) of high energy Deep Inelastic Scattering of highly virtual photons off heavy nuclear targets and thereby probe QCD in a new regime. At high enough energies, whichever hadronic configuration the photon fluctuates into, the interaction at a given impact parameter with the heavy nuclear target will eventually reach its geometrical limit corresponding to the scattering from a black disk. An attractive feature of the BBL regime for a large nucleus is that the interaction is strong although the coupling constant is small. Predictions for longitudinal and transverse distributions of the leading hadrons in inclusive and diffractive channels and exclusive vector meson production are found to be strikingly different in BBL and the leading twist approximation. In particular, the multiplicity of leading hadrons in the current fragmentation region is strongly suppressed, while the cross section of diffractive vector meson production by longitudinally polarized photons is $ \propto 1/Q^2$. The x and $Q^2$ ranges where BBL maybe reached are calculated for the interaction of color triplet and color octet dipoles at central impact parameters. We conclude that for heavy nuclei THERA would reach deep into BBL for a wide range of $Q^2$. The connection between hard diffraction and leading twist nuclear shadowing is analysed. It is demonstrated that the current leading twist analyses of the HERA diffractive data lead to similar and very large leading twist shadowing for gluons. We derive the major characteristics of inclusive and diffractive final states in deep-inelastic scattering off heavy nuclei for the-high energy (small-x) kinematics in which the limit of complete absorption is reached for the dominant hadronic fluctuations in the virtual photon (the black-body limit of the process). Both the longitudinal and transverse distributions of the leading hadrons are found to be strikingly different from the corresponding ones within the leading-twist approximation, and hence provide unambiguous signals for the onset of the black-body limit., Comment: 12 pages, 1 figure, final version published in PRL

We quantify perturbative and non-perturbative QCD effects in the exclusive $J/\psi$-photoproduction cross section, and in the shrinkage of the differential cross section with respect to momentum transfer, $t$. We predict that in the high energy THERA region there will always be a significant contribution to this process that rises quickly with energy. This implies that the taming of the rise of the cross section with energy, due to both the expansion of spatially-small fluctuations in the photon and to higher twist effects, is rather gradual., Comment: Published version, 29 pages, 16 figures, uses JHEP.cls. A personal summary of the discussions which took place at the informal meeting in Amirim, Israel from June 1-4 2000, concerning the dipole picture of small-$x$ physics is presented. The broad aim of the meeting was to address the question ``Has HERA reached a new QCD regime (at small $x$) ?''. As a consequence of QCD factorization theorems, a wide variety of inclusive and exclusive cross sections may be formulated in terms of a universal colour dipole cross section at small $x$. It is well known that for small transverse size dipoles this cross section is related to the leading-log gluon density. Using the measured pion-proton cross section as a guide, we suggest a reasonable extrapolation of the dipole cross section to the large transverse size region. We point out that the observed magnitude and small $x$ rise of the gluon density from conventional fits implies that the DGLAP approximation has a restricted region of applicability. We found that `higher twist' or unitarity corrections are required in, or close to, the HERA kinematic region, even for small `perturbative' dipoles for scattering at central impact parameters. This means that the usual perturbative leading twist description, for moderate virtualities, $1 < Q^2 < 10$ GeV$^2$, has rather large `higher twist' corrections at small $x$. In addition, for these virtualities, we also find sizeable contributions from large non-perturbative dipoles ($b \gsim 0.4$ fm) to $F_2$, and also to $F_L$. This also leads to deviations from the standard leading twist DGLAP results, at small $x$ and moderate $Q^2$. Our model also describes the low $Q^2$ data very well without any further tuning. We generalize the Gribov unitarity limit for the structure functions of a hadron target to account for the blackening of the interaction at central impact parameters and to include scattering at peripheral impact parameters which dominate at extremely large energies., Comment: Final version, 38 pages, 16 figures, 1 table. Predictions for the diffractive photoproduction of the $\Upsilon$-family at HERA energies, within the framework of the analysis by Frankfurt, Koepf and Strikman, are presented. Two novel effects lead to a significant enhancement of the original calculation: the non-diagonal (or skewed) kinematics, calculated to leading-log($Q^2$) accuracy, and the large magnitude of the real part of the amplitude. The resultant cross sections are found to agree fairly well with recent preliminary data from ZEUS and H1. A strong correlation between the mass of the diffractively produced state and the energy dependence of the cross section is found. Following an introduction which explains some basic ideas about diffraction, the semiclassical approach to diffraction in deep inelastic scattering (DIS) is outlined. The diffractive production of high-$p_{\perp}$ jets in deep-inelastic scattering is studied in the semiclassical approach. The $p_{\perp}$-spectra of $q {\bar q}$ and $q {\bar q} g$ diffractive final states are found to be qualitatively different. For $q {\bar q}$ final states, which are produced by `hard' colour-singlet exchange, the $p_{\perp}$-spectrum is much softer than for $q {\bar q} g$ final states, where the colour neutralization is `soft'. Furthermore, the two different final states can be clearly distinguished by their diffractive mass distributions., Comment: 9 pages, latex, 5 figures

This talk concerns the production of open charm in diffractive deep inelastic scattering. This has been calculated recently in the context of the semi-classical approach to diffraction. The diffractive production of open charm in deep-inelastic scattering is studied in the semiclassical approach which has been proposed recently. In this approach, the leading order process contains a charm quark pair and an additional gluon in the diffractive final state. The $p_{\perp}$-spectrum and the diffractive mass distribution are evaluated and compared with predictions based on perturbative two-gluon exchange calculations for charm quark pair production. It is shown that the $p_{\perp}$-spectrum provides a clear test of the underlying partonic process whereas the diffractive mass distribution reflects the non-perturbative mechanism of colour neutralization., Comment: 10 pages, latex, 4 figures. A review of theoretical models of diffractive structure functions in deep inelastic scattering (DIS) is presented with a view to highlighting distinctive features, that may be distinguished experimentally. In particular, predictions for the behaviour of the diffractive structure functions $F_2^D, F_L^D, F_2^{D(\mbox{\small{charm}})}$ are presented. Order $\alpha_s$-corrections to the diffractive structure functions $F_L^D$ and $F_2^D$ at large $Q^2$ and small $x$ are evaluated in the semiclassical approach, where the initial proton is treated as a classical colour field. The diffractive final state contains a fast gluon in addition to a quark-antiquark pair. Two of these partons may have large transverse momentum. Our calculations lead to an intuitive picture of deep-inelastic diffractive processes which is very similar to Bjorken's aligned-jet model. Both diffractive structure functions contain leading twist contributions from high-$p_{\perp}$ jets., Comment: 32 pages, 5 figures. Four equations are changed to account for a technical error. In this paper we investigate the effect of introducing transverse momentum cutoffs on the BFKL equation. We present solutions in moment space for various models of the BFKL kernel for different combinations of these cutoffs. We improve on previous calculations by using the full BFKL kernel (rather than simplified analytic approximations). The significance of the next-to-leading or ``higher twist'' terms in the kernel are assessed. We find that, while these terms are negligible in the absence of cutoffs, introducing an infra-red cutoff markedly enhances their significance., Comment: 27 pages, latex, 6 figures

We outline a general method for obtaining the solution to the ($t=0$) BFKL equation in the presence of transverse momentum cutoffs. A lower cutoff allows one to avoid integration over nonperturbative momenta and an upper one is needed from energy-momentum conservation. Our method allows for the inclusion of an arbitrary number of poles in the kernel and is applicable to any input distribution. Taking Mellin transforms, we discuss the effect of introducing cutoffs by considering the singularity structure in the transform space.
