Engineers and Architects require effective communication and interdisciplinary team working to be successful throughout their career which, is often overlooked during formal undergraduate education. The purpose of this paper is to disseminate the novel design and evaluation of a module on communication and interdisciplinary team working in the combined teaching of undergraduate Engineering and Architecture students. An Interdisciplinary Problem-Based Learning (IPBL) approach is used and the theoretical construct for this work is the application of dialogical theory to the shared habitus between engineers and architects. The constructivist theory of learning was employed in the design and delivery of this module. It is an action research pedagogical intervention to support the improvement in the teaching and learning of communications and teamwork between architects and engineers. Feedback shows students identified improvement in their communication and teamwork skills at the end of the module.

For a structural engineer, effective communication and interaction with architects cannot be underestimated as a key skill to success throughout their professional career. Structural engineers and architects have to share a common language and understanding of each other in order to achieve the most desirable architectural and structural designs. This interaction and engagement develops during their professional career but needs to be nurtured during their undergraduate studies. The objective of this paper is to present the strategies employed to engage higher order thinking in structural engineering students in order to help them solve complex problem-based learning (PBL) design scenarios presented by architecture students. The strategies employed were applied in the experimental setting of an undergraduate module in structural engineering at Queen's University Belfast in the UK. The strategies employed were active learning to engage with content knowledge, the use of physical conceptual structural models to reinforce key concepts and finally, reinforcing the need for hand sketching of ideas to promote higher order problem-solving. The strategies employed were evaluated through student survey, student feedback and module facilitator (this author) reflection. The strategies were qualitatively perceived by the tutor and quantitatively evaluated by students in a cross-sectional study to help interaction with the architecture students, aid interdisciplinary learning and help students creatively solve problems (through higher order thinking). The students clearly enjoyed this module and in particular interacting with structural engineering tutors and students from another discipline.

This paper introduces a new bridge damage indicator, the moving reference influence function (MRIF), to detect bridge bearing damage using deflections inferred from vehicle accelerations. Recently, vehicle acceleration has been used to find the apparent profile (AP) of a bridge when a vehicle passes. This AP consists of bridge profile elevations and bridge deflection components. To describe the relationship between these deflection components and load, a MRIF is proposed for the first time in this paper. An error minimization process is used to find the MRIF and the road surface profile on the bridge. The vehicle acceleration signals used in the paper are assumed to be collected from a partially instrumented vehicle fleet. In the fleet, only the first axle acceleration is collected from each vehicle. To simplify the minimization process, both the MRIF and the bridge profile are represented by kernel density functions. The results show that the bridge profile can be accurately obtained and that bridge bearing damage can be identified from the MRIF. Both area and skewness of the MRIF are damage sensitive and can be used together to find the location and severity of bridge bearing damage. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Scour erosion poses a significant risk to bridge safety worldwide and affects the stiffness of the soil-foundation system, resulting in global changes in the dynamic behavior of the bridges. In this paper, a new approach to detect scour at multiple locations is proposed, using wavelet-based Operating Deflection Shape (ODS) amplitudes. A numerical model of a bridge with four simply supported spans resting on piers is used to test the approach. Scour is modelled as a reduction in vertical foundation stiffness under one or multiple bridge piers. A fleet of passing trucks, modelled as half-car vehicles, are used to excite the bridge to enable structural accelerations be calculated at each support. The approach is shown to be effective with acceleration measurements at each support location in a multi-span bridge. Using a fleet of passing vehicles, the temporal accelerations measured at each support are averaged and transformed into the frequency–spatial domain, in order to estimate the wavelet-based ODS for a given scour case. A damage indicator is postulated based on differences between the ODS of healthy and scoured bridge cases. Mode shapes are sensitive to the structural condition of bridges but a reasonable estimate of such changes require several accelerometers, which can be resource intensive. This paper obviates this problem through a novel structure health monitoring (SHM) approach for estimating modal parameters of bridges, including damage-induced changes of boundary conditions by using progressively re-deploying sensors along a monitored bridge. This concept of re-deployable sensors and subsequent use of a series of measurements allow extracting data from different bridge segments and also to get an indication of the condition of the bridge through frequency domain decomposition. Data from different segments are combined to estimate the global mode shape of the bridge and its gradient is observed to be indicative of support stiffness change. The concept is successfully tested through a full-scale field trial on a railway bridge in the Republic of Ireland, before and after the rehabilitation of its supports. The results are expected to guide future on-site measurement of damages due to flooding, scour, and other natural hazards, along with the effectiveness of intervention actions like repair and rehabilitation, providing a clear evidence base for practical value of SHM.
