In May of 2011, NASA selected the Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification, and Security-Regolith Explorer (OSIRIS-REx) asteroid sample return mission as the third mission in the New Frontiers program. The other two New Frontiers missions are New Horizons, which explored Pluto during a flyby in July 2015 and is on its way for a flyby of Kuiper Belt object 2014 MU69 on Jan. 1, 2019, and Juno, an orbiting mission that is studying the origin, evolution, and internal structure of Jupiter. The spacecraft departed for near-Earth asteroid (101955) Bennu aboard an United Launch Alliance Atlas V 411 evolved expendable launch vehicle at 7:05 p.m. EDT on September 8, 2016, on a seven-year journey to return samples from Bennu. The spacecraft is on an outbound-cruise trajectory that will result in a rendezvous with Bennu in August 2018. The science instruments on the spacecraft will survey Bennu to measure its physical, geological, and chemical properties, and the team will use these data to select a site on the surface to collect at least 60 g of asteroid regolith. The team will also analyze the remote-sensing data to perform a detailed study of the sample site for context, assess Bennus resource potential, refine estimates of its impact probability with Earth, and provide ground-truth data for the extensive astronomical data set collected on this asteroid. As of the end of the 2018-19 field season, the U.S. Antarctic meteorite program has surpassed 23,000 meteorites collected. The U.S. collection is valuable in that it is classified in its entirety. The systematic methods employed to collect the meteorites have provided meteorites of more than 40 types, many of which are the first of their type ever recognized. One of the early drivers for consistent and methodical characterization of the entire U.S. Antarctic collection was to allow statistical comparisons. Early statistical assessments of the U.S. Antarctic collection examined mass distributions and the relative frequency of meteorite types as well as comparisons to a defined set of modern falls. Using these statistics argued that the flux of H chondrites changed over time used model size distributions to deconstruct the contribution of wind movement, meteorite supply and search losses to the Antarctic collection. Mass-based statistics and size distribution comparisons were examined by investigated various aspects of the statistics, including comparison with modern falls/Saharan finds. Also discuss geospatial statistics provides a comprehensive overview of the statistics of the Antarctic collections for the first 35 seasons of U.S. collection by ANSMET. NASA's Psyche Mission is engaged with a growing number of capstone teams pursuing topics relevant to the mission, including partnering with four universities to trial cross-university teaming. Creating interdisciplinary capstone teams with students from different universities provides an opportunity to prepare students to engage with a diversity of disciplines and collaborate in remote teams in the workplace. Additionally, through such capstones, universities may gain access to non-local, specialized technical mentors and to disciplines not offered at their institutions. An added benefit is providing greater fidelity to NASA space missions, which involve teams working together at a distance. We discuss early lessons learned from the first three inter-university, interdisciplinary capstone teams participating with the Psyche mission and discuss plans for improvement and future expansion.

Small, kilometre-sized near-Earth asteroids are expected to have young and frequently refreshed surfaces for two reasons: collisional disruptions are frequent in the main asteroid belt where they originate, and thermal or tidal processes act on them once they become near-Earth asteroids. Here we present early measurements of numerous large candidate impact craters on near-Earth asteroid (101955) Bennu by the OSIRIS-REx (Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification, and Security- Regolith Explorer) mission, which indicate a surface that is between 100 million and 1 billion years old, predating Bennu's expected duration as a near-Earth asteroid. We also observe many fractured boulders, the morphology of which suggests an influence of impact or thermal processes over a considerable amount of time since the boulders were exposed at the surface. However, the surface also shows signs of more recent mass movement: clusters of boulders at topographic lows, a deficiency of small craters and infill of large craters. The oldest features likely record events from Bennu's time in the main asteroid belt.

Establishing the abundance and physical properties of regolith and boulders on asteroids is crucial for understanding the formation and degradation mechanisms at work on their surfaces. Using images and thermal data from NASA's Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification, and Security-Regolith Explorer (OSIRIS-REx) spacecraft, we show that asteroid (101955) Bennu's surface is globally rough, dense with boulders, and low in albedo. The number of boulders is surprising given Bennu's moderate thermal inertia, suggesting that simple models linking thermal inertia to particle size do not adequately capture the complexity relating these properties. At the same time, we find evidence for a wide range of particle sizes with distinct albedo characteristics. Our findings imply that ages of Bennu's surface particles span from the disruption of the asteroid's parent body (boulders) to recent in situ production (micrometre-scale particles).

The aubrites (~30 known meteorites) are a unique group of differentiated meteorites that formed on asteroids with oxygen fugacities (ƒO2) from ~2 to ~6 log units below the iron-wüstite buffer [1–2]. At these highly reduced conditions, elements deviate from the geochemical behavior exhibited at terrestrial ƒO2, forming FeO-poor silicates, Si-bearing metals, and exotic sulfides [3]. Here we examine the 3D mineralogy and the geochemistry of fourteen aubrites, including mineral major element compositions, bulk-rock compositions, and oxygen isotopic compositions to understand their formation and evolution at extreme ƒO2 conditions. While previous studies have described the petrology and 2D modal abundances of aubrites, this work investigates the 3D modal mineralogies of silicate, metal, and sulfide phases in aubrite samples, which are then com-pared to the available 2D data. We utilize X-ray computed tomography (XCT) to non-destructively analyze the distribution and abundances of mineral phases in aubrites and locate composite clasts of sulfide grains for future analysis.

Measurements made with geochemical instruments on the MESSENGER spacecraft revealed that Mercury's crust is surprisingly rich in volatile elements, including S, Na, K, Cl, and C, and that it is enriched in Mg and depleted in Al, Ca, and Fe, relative to other terrestrial planets. Geochemical maps also indicated the presence of a number of distinct geochemical terranes. The MESSENGER X-ray Spectrometer (XRS) detected X-ray fluorescence, induced by incident solar X-rays, from the top approx. 10s of micrometers of Mercury's surface. Like Fe, Cr was only detectable by XRS during large solar flares. However, accurate Cr measurements are more susceptible to systematic errors than other elements measured by the XRS. Therefore, to date, Cr data have been published for only 11 XRS measurements, but we have recently derived a map of Cr/Si across Mercury's surface. This map is based on data acquired through the complete MESSENGER mission and reveals clear spatial heterogeneity in Cr.

New data obtained during the MESSENGER mission has allowed us to better contrain the composition and mineralogy of the mercurian surface. One unique feature of Mercury is its extremely low oxygen fugacity (ƒO2) (Iron Wustite (IW) -7.3 to IW-2.6). At such extreme conditions, elements that exhibit lithophile behavior on Earth can exhibit chalcophile or siderophile behavior, leading to the formation of exotic sulfides and metals. As no samples have been returned from Mercury, it is critical to study meteorite analogs to better under-stand the formation conditions of the minerals present at the mercurian surface, as well as mercurian magmatic processes. Given the low fO2 on Mercury, we have selected to investigate potential meteoritic analogs for Mercury among the most reduced meteorite types, including the aubrites and enstatite chondrite impact melts. The aubrites are differentiated meteorites that show varying degrees of brecciation, have a similar ƒO2 to the mercurian surface and interior, and contain exotic sulfides that have been inferred to be present on the mercurian surface. The enstatite chondrite impact melts are from undifferentiated parent bodies, have a similar ƒO2 to the mercurian surface and interior, and contain exotic sulfides that have been inferred to be present on the mercurian surface. In this study, we present a comprehensive analysis of a representative suite of aubrites and enstatite chondrite impact melts and assess their relevance to under-standing magmatic processes on Mercury.

Mercury is the most reduced terrestrial planet with the largest core/mantle size ratio and highest sulfur concentration on the surface. The MErcury Surface, Space ENvironment, GEochemistry, and Ranging (MESSENGER) spacecraft data allowed mapping of Mercury's surface elemental composition. Recent chromium mapping suggests Mercury's surface has on average 800 parts per million Cr with the highest values in the High Magnesium Region. These new data can give clues about Mercury's internal structure and the redox conditions under which it differentiated. In the present study, we present experimental data on the distribution of Cr among metal, silicate and sulfide liquids. We then combine them with data from previous studies and a model of planetary differentiation to discuss Mercury's bulk composition and its oxidation state.

As the most oxidized chondrites and a group of carbonaceous chondrites spanning the range of petrologic types, CK chondrites occupy an extreme in our understanding of the origin and evolution of chondritic parent bodies. With the proposed linkage of CV and CK chondrites and the suggestion that differentiation of a postulated CV-CK asteroid could have differentiated to form a core and established a magnetic dynamo, CK chondrites are receiving considerable attention. Most of this attention has focused on the similarities between CK3 and CV3 chondrites and the origin of each. We have previously argued that melting of an oxidized core could produce a magnetite-sulfide core, rather than the more conventional metal-sulfide core. In this work, we focus on CK6 chondrites to understand the origin of the most highly metamorphosed members of the group as representative of the material that might differentiate to form such an oxidized core.

The MESSENGER (MErcury Sur-face, Space ENvironment, GEochemistry and Ranging) orbiter measured the Mercurian surface abundances of key rock-forming elements to help us better understand the planet's surface and bulk geochemistry. A major discovery is that the Mercurian surface and interior are characterized by an extremely low oxygen fugacity (ƒO2; Iron-Wüstite (IW) -7.3 to IW-2.6. This is supported by low Fe and high S abundances on the surface. This low ƒO2 causes a different elemental partioning from what is observed on Earth. Using surface composition, it was shown that the Mercurian surface mainly consists of normative plagioclase, pyroxene, olivine, and exotic sulfides, such as niningerite ((Mg,Mn, Fe)S) and oldhamite (CaS).

NASA's Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification, and Security-Regolith Explorer (OSIRIS-REx) mission successfully launched on September 8th, 2016. During its rendezvous with near-Earth asteroid (101955) Bennu beginning in 2018, OSIRIS-REx will characterize the asteroid's physical, mineralogical, and chemical properties in an effort to globally map the properties of Bennu, a primitive carbonaceous asteroid, and choose a sampling location]. In preparation for these observations, analog samples were spectrally characterized across visible, near- and thermal-infrared wavelengths and were used in initial tests on mineral-phase-detection and abundance-determination software algorithms.

NASA's OSIRIS-REx sample return mission launched on September 8th, 2016 to rendezvous with B-type asteroid (101955) Bennu in 2018. Type C and B asteroids have been linked to carbonaceous chondrites because of their similar visible - to - near infrared (VIS-NIR) spectral properties [e.g., 1,2]. The OSIRIS-REx Visible and Infrared Spectrometer (OVIRS) and the Thermal Emission Spectrometer (OTES) will make spectroscopic observations of Bennu during the encounter. Constraining the presence or absence of hydrous minerals (e.g., Ca-carbonate, phyllosilicates) and organic molecules will be key to characterizing Bennu [3] prior to sample site selection. The goal of this study was to develop a suite of analog and meteorite samples and obtain their spectral properties over the wavelength ranges of OVIRS (0.4- 4.3 micrometer) and OTES (5.0-50 micrometer). These spectral data were used to validate the mission science-data processing system. We discuss the reasoning behind the study and share lessons learned.

The MErcury Surface, Space ENvironment, GEochemistry, and Ranging (MESSENGER) spacecraft collected data that provided important insights into the structure, chemical makeup, and compositional diversity of Mercury. The X-Ray Spectrometer (XRS) and Gamma-Ray Spectrometer (GRS) onboard MESSENGER provided the first detailed chemical analyses of Mercury's surface. Among the many discoveries included several surprising characteristics about the surface of Mercury, including elevated S abundances (up to 4 percent by weight), low Fe abundances (less than 4 percent by weight), and relatively low O abundances (O/Si ratio of 1.40 plus or minus 0.03). The surface chemistry as determined by MESSENGER has been used to identify up to nine distinct geochemical terranes on Mercury. Numerous modeling and experimental efforts have been undertaken to infer the mineralogy and petrology of mercurian lavas and surface materials. However, all of these efforts have presumed valence states for each of the elements according to the following: Si4+, Ti4+, Al3+, Cr2+, Fe2+, Mn2+, Mg2+, Ca2+, Na+, K+, S2-, Cl-. Based on these valence assignments, cations are charged balanced with the anions O2-, S2-, and Cl- and the compositions are recast in terms of oxides, sulfides, and chlorides. Based on these assumptions, the geochemical terranes that have been identified on Mercury yield O/Si wt. ratios ranging from 1.61 to 1.84, which is substantially higher than the preliminary O/Si ratio of 1.40 plus or minus 0.03 determined by the MESSENGER GRS]. We have re-evaluated the O/Si ratio using the entire MESSENGER dataset to reassess its implications for the geochemistry of Mercury.

The Mars Exploration Rover Spirit ended its mission in Gusev crater on sol 2210 after it had become stuck in a deposit of fined-grained and sulfate rich soil with dust covered solar panels unfavorably pointed toward the sun. Final analysis of remaining data from Spirit's Moessbauer spectrometer (Fe redox and mineralogy) for sols 1529 through 2071 is now complete. We focus here on chemical (APXS) and MB data for targets having high-SiO2 or high-SO3 and process link the targets through mixing and geochemical modelling to an acid-sulfate system centered at Home Plate, which is considered to be a hydrovolcanic complex.

Meteorites from the Moon, Mars, and many types of asteroid bodies have been identified among our global inventory of meteorites, however samples of Mercury and Venus have not been identified. The absence of mercurian and venusian meteorites could be attributed to an inability to recognize them in our collections due to a paucity of geochemical information for Venus and Mercury. In the case of mercurian meteorites, this possibility is further supported by dynamical calculations that suggest mercurian meteorites should be present on Earth at a factor of 2-3 less than meteorites from Mars [1]. In the present study, we focus on the putative mineralogy of mercurian meteorites using data obtained from the MErcury Surface, Space ENvironment, GEochemistry, and Ranging (MESSENGER) spacecraft, which has provided us with our first quantitative constraints on the geochemistry of planet Mercury. We have used the MESSENGER data to compile a list of mineralogical and geochemical characteristics that a meteorite from Mercury is likely to exhibit.

The Chelyabinsk meteorite fall on February 15, 2013 attracted much more attention worldwide than do most falls. A consortium led by JSC received 3 masses of Chelyabinsk (Chel-101, -102, -103) that were collected shortly after the fall and handled with care to minimize contamination. Initial studies were reported in 2013; we have studied these samples with a wide range of analytical techniques to better understand the mineralogy, petrology, chronology and exposure history of the Chelyabinsk parent body.
