18. Isotopic discrimination associated with symbiotic nitrogen fixation in stylo (Stylosanthes hamataL.) and cowpea (Vigna unguiculataL.)

Abstract

A glasshouse study was carried out to determine the isotopicdiscrimination (B values) and the isotopic fractionation factors (β)associated with symbiotic nitrogen fixation in stylo (StylosantheshamataL.) and cowpea (Vigna unguiculataL.Walp). The B values are required to improve the accuracy of estimates ofnitrogen fixation based on the differences in the natural abundance of15N between nitrogen fixing and non-fixing plants. The B values ofplants grown in nitrogen free media for stylo were −1.60, 82 days after planting (DAP) and −1.86, 98 DAP and −1.48, 49DAP and −1.51 for cowpea shoots 73 DAP. Theisotopic fractionation factors for stylo and cowpea were 1.0016, 82DAP and 1.0019, 98 DAP and 1.0018, 49 DAPand 1.0015, 73 DAP, respectively.

19. An evaluation of the influence of available soil water storage capacity on growing season length and yield of tropical pastures using simple water balance models

Abstract

The results of a comparative study of the soil water balance, plant water relations and dry matter production of pastures on three soils with available water storage capacities of 75, 150, and 180 mm are reported. Differences among sites in growing season length varied from nil to 27% in the four years of study. To enable sampling of a much larger number of years, the methods of systems analysis and simulation are used. The experimental data is used to test or to formulate simple models which are in turn used to simulate the growing season length and dry matter production in 60 years for which rainfall records are available.
