Recently, it was demonstrated that the quasiparticle dynamics, the layer-dependent charge and potential, and the c-axis screening coefficient could be extracted from measurements of the spectral function of few layer graphene films grown epitaxially on SiC using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). In this article we review these findings, and present detailed methodology for extracting such parameters from ARPES. We also present detailed arguments against the possibility of an energy gap at the Dirac crossing ED.

A demonstration on how near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) spectroscopy characterizes organic layers in atom- and orbital-specific fashion is presented with examples ranging from alkanes with customized end groups to DNA oligonucleotides. This technique measures transition from core levels to empty valence orbitals by applying it to a self-assembled monolayer containing an alkane backbone and an aromatic end group.

The pathway for thermal decomposition of an oleic acid surfactant protecting Co and Ni nanocrystals is identified by probing the relevant molecular orbitals with x-ray absorption spectroscopy. The two steps observed previously in thermogravimetric measurements are identified with thermal desorption of entire molecules at ≈200 °C and dehydrogenation at ≈400 °C, which leaves a graphitic surface with alkane fragments underneath. © 2003 American Institute of Physics. A one-dimensional 5×2 reconstruction of Gd is observed on Si(1 1 1), which can be stabilized in single domain form on vicinal surfaces. It contains zig-zag rows of occupied orbitals alternating with rows of unoccupied orbitals, as inferred from spectroscopic scanning tunneling microscopy. The large magnetic moment of the Gd 4f electrons creates atomic chains with a magnetic coupling. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
