Measurements of dissolved organic carbon (DOC), nitrogen (DON), and phosphorus (DOP) concentrations are used to characterize the dissolved organic matter (DOM) pool and are important components ofbiogeochemical cycling in the coastal ocean. Here, we present the first edition of a global database (CoastDOMv1; available at https://doi.org/10.1594/PANGAEA.964012, Lønborg et al., 2023) compiling previously published and unpublished measurements of DOC, DON, and DOP in coastal waters. These data are complementedby hydrographic data such as temperature and salinity and, to the extent possible, other biogeochemical variables(e.g. chlorophyll a, inorganic nutrients) and the inorganic carbon system (e.g. dissolved inorganic carbon andtotal alkalinity). Overall, CoastDOM v1 includes observations of concentrations from all continents. However,most data were collected in the Northern Hemisphere, with a clear gap in DOM measurements from the SouthernHemisphere. The data included were collected from 1978 to 2022 and consist of 62 338 data points for DOC,20 356 for DON, and 13 533 for DOP. The number of measurements decreases progressively in the sequenceDOC > DON > DOP, reflecting both differences in the maturity of the analytical methods and the greater focuson carbon cycling by the aquatic science community. The global database shows that the average DOC concentration in coastal waters (average ± standard deviation (SD): 182±314 µmolC L−1; median: 103 µmolC L−1) is13-fold higher than the average coastal DON concentration (13.6 ± 30.4 µmol N L−1; median: 8.0 µmol N L−1),which is itself 39-fold higher than the average coastal DOP concentration (0.34 ± 1.11 µmol P L−1; median:0.18 µmol P L−1). The 22 participating scientists from Germany, Norway, the Netherlands, Denmark, Sweden, Finland and the United States covered scientific expertise in (micro-) biology, chemistry, and oceanography. Apart from aerosol and rainwater collection, which was applied to assess atmospheric deposition, sampling was restricted to the water column. Phyto and zooplankton were sampled by vertical net hauls using a plankton net, multinet and a pump system for the filtration of large water volumes to collect different size classes of phytoplankton, followed by DNA and RNA extraction. Phytoplankton was also characterized and quantified onboard by microscopy and flow cytometry. Primary productivity was assessed in incubations in the isotope container using radiocarbon labels. Clonal cultures were established to identify selected key species. Bacterial abundance, community composition and production were also determined onboard. Chemical sampling and analytical parameters, most of which taken from the CTD water sampler, will be measured back in the home labs. The final dataset will cover inorganic nutrients, oxygen concentration, dissolved inorganic carbon, total alkalinity, He/Ne ratios for the estimation of basal melt water, δ18O for the contribution of meteoric water, particulate and dissolved organic carbon and nitrogen, optical properties (fluorescence), molecular characterization and radiocarbon age of organic matter. A FerryBox system continuously recorded surface water information on turbidity, chlorophyll fluorescence, temperature, salinity, colored dissolved organic matter and salinity. At each station, salinity and temperature profiles were recorded by the CTD system and by profiler deployments, which also recorded the spectral light profile in the water column. The vertical material flux was investigated by the deployment of drifting sediment traps, a camera system and a marine snow catcher.

Integration of inland waters into regional and global carbon (C) budgets requires a comprehensive understand- ing of factors regulating organic carbon (OC) delivery and in situ processing. This study reviews advances in optical, molecular, and isotopic approaches to resolve the sources, ages, and transformations of OC in aquatic systems. OC characterization using excitation emission matrix spectra, Fourier transform ion cyclotron mass spectrometry, and nuclear magnetic resonance provides detailed molecular level insight. Radiocarbon isotopic approaches and compound-specific techniques resolve the input, metabolic fate, and turnover time of OC in ecosystems ranging in size from streams to the open ocean. Accumulating evidence suggests that aquatic OC is composed of diverse biogeochemical components. We conclude with enduring and emerging questions that underscore the role of inland systems in the global C cycle and propose unique combinations of approaches to better discern their role in the delivery and transformation of OC from soils to seas.

However, there are no regional carbon budgets spanning the three main ecosystems in coastal waters: tidal wetlands, estuaries, and shelf waters. Here we construct such a budget for eastern North America using historical data, empirical models, remote sensing algorithms, and process‐based models. Considering the net fluxes of total carbon at the domain boundaries, 59 ± 12% (± 2 standard errors) of the carbon entering is from rivers and 41 ± 12% is from the atmosphere, while 80 ± 9% of the carbon leaving is exported to the open ocean and 20 ± 9% is buried. Net lateral carbon transfers between the three main ecosystem types are comparable to fluxes at the domain boundaries. Each ecosystem type contributes substantially to exchange with the atmosphere, with CO2 uptake split evenly between tidal wetlands and shelf waters, and estuarine CO2 outgassing offsetting half of the uptake. Similarly, burial is about equal in tidal wetlands and shelf waters, while estuaries play a smaller but still substantial role. The importance of tidal wetlands and estuaries in the overall budget is remarkable given that they, respectively, make up only 2.4 and 8.9% of the study domain area. Dittmar et al. proposed that mixing alone can explain our observed decrease in marine dissolved organic sulfur with age. However, their simple model lacks an explanation for the origin of sulfur-depleted organic matter in the deep ocean and cannot adequately reproduce our observed stoichiometric changes. Using radiocarbon age also implicitly models the preferential cycling of sulfur that they are disputing.

The biogeochemistry of marine dissolved organic carbon, -nitrogen and –phosphorus (DOC, DON or DOP) were extensively studied in the recent past. In contrast, our knowledge on the quantity, distribution and biogeochemical role of DOS in the ocean is very limited. The predominance of sulfate in the ocean, which exceeds the concentration of DOS by five orders of magnitudes, is the major analytical challenge. Our research aim was to quantify and chemically characterize marine DOS. We studied dissolved organic matter in the upper water column of the East Atlantic and the Atlantic sector of the Southern Ocean. DOS was quantified in solid phase extracts using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Based on extraction efficiencies of 5-15% (as determined for peat water samples) we calculated DOS concentrations of 0.82-2.01 µM in the East Atlantic and 0.60-1.11 µM in the Southern Ocean. DOC/DOS ratios in the extracts ranged between 157-272 in the East Atlantic and 235-297 in the Southern Ocean. For the molecular characterization of DOS, the DOS concentration was linked to the compositional information derived from ultrahigh resolution mass spectrometry (FT-ICR-MS).

More than 90% of the global ocean dissolved organic carbon (DOC) is refractory, has an average age of 4000–6000 years and a lifespan from months to millennia. The fraction of dissolved organic matter (DOM) that is resistant to degradation is a long-term buffer in the global carbon cycle but its chemical composition, structure, and biochemical formation and degradation mechanisms are still unresolved. We have compiled the most comprehensive molecular dataset of 197 Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR MS) analyses from solid-phase extracted marine DOM covering two major oceans, the Atlantic sector of the Southern Ocean and the East Atlantic Ocean (ranging from 50° N to 70° S). Molecular trends and radiocarbon dating of 34 DOM samples (comprising Δ14C values from −229‰ to −495‰) were combined to model an integrated degradation rate for bulk DOC resulting in a predicted age of >24 ka for the most persistent DOM fraction. First order kinetic degradation rates for 1557 mass peaks indicate that numerous DOM molecules cycle on timescales much longer than the turnover of the bulk DOC pool (estimated residence times of up to ~100 ka) and the range of validity of radiocarbon dating. Changes in elemental composition were determined by assigning molecular formulae to the detected mass peaks. The combination of residence times with molecular information enabled modelling of the average elemental composition of the slowest degrading fraction of the DOM pool. In our dataset, a group of 361 molecular formulae represented the most stable composition in the oceanic environment (“island of stability”). These most persistent compounds encompass only a narrow range of the molecular elemental ratios H/C (average of 1.17 ± 0.13), and O/C (average of 0.52 ± 0.10) and molecular masses (360 ± 28 and 497 ± 51 Da). Dissolved organic matter (DOM) was extracted by solid-phase extraction (SPE) from 137 water samples from different climate zones and different depths along an eastern Atlantic Ocean transect. The extracts were analyzed with Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR MS) with electrospray ionization (ESI). Δ14C analyses were performed on subsamples of the SPE-DOM. In addition, the amount of dissolved organic carbon was determined for all water and SPE-DOM samples as well as the yield of amino sugars for selected samples. Linear correlations were observed between the magnitudes of 43 % of the FT-ICR mass peaks and the extract Δ14C values. Decreasing SPE-DOM Δ14C values went along with a shift in the molecular composition to higher average masses (m/z) and lower hydrogen/carbon (H/C) ratios. The correlation was used to model the SPE-DOM Δ14C distribution for all 137 samples. Based on single mass peaks, a degradation index (IDEG) was developed to compare the degradation state of marine SPE-DOM samples analyzed with FT-ICR MS. A correlation between Δ14C, IDEG, DOC values and amino sugar yield supports that SPE-DOM analyzed with FT-ICR MS reflects trends of bulk DOM. DOM weighted normalized mass peak magnitudes were used to compare aged and recent SPE-DOM on a semi-quantitative molecular basis. The magnitude comparison showed a continuum of different degradation rates for the detected compounds. A high proportion of the compounds should persist, possibly modified by partial degradation, in the course of thermohaline circulation. Prokaryotic (bacterial) production, transformation and accumulation of this very stable DOM occur primarily in the upper ocean. This DOM is an important contribution to very old DOM, showing that production and degradation are dynamic processes.
